SnO2-based varistors doped with ZnO and WO3 were prepared by mixed oxide method. Experimental evidence shows that the increase in ZnO amount increases the volume and microstrain of unit cell while the WO3 promotes a decrease. The effect of ZnO and WO3 additives could be explained by the substitution of Sn4+ by Zn2+ and W6+. The addition of WO3 inhibits the grain growth due to the segregation in the grain boundary without influence in the densification of the samples. Besides that, an increase in the electrical resistance of the SnO2-ZnO-WO3 system was observed independent of the WO3 concentration. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Transparent oxyfluoride glasses and beta-PbF(2) nanocrystals containing glass-ceramics were prepared with varying Eu(3+) content (0.3, 0.4, 0.5 and 0.6%). The effect of Eu(3+) content on the preparation of glass-ceramics was investigated. From differential scanning calorimetry, the T(x)-T(g)(T(x)-temperature of the onset of crystallization; T(g)-glass transition temperature) parameter for glasses has shown slight variation, and an exothermic peak near T(g) called the ceramization temperature (T(c)) has been observed. Heat treatments were performed at this temperature to obtain transparent glass-ceramics containing beta-PbF(2) nanocrystals, identified by x-ray diffraction. Heat treatments for different periods of time were performed and were observed to be very important in the control of the crystal size and of the crystallization rate. Based upon the absorption spectra, the scattering level due to the presence of beta-PbF(2) nanocrystals in the glass-ceramics was observed to be similar to that for the mother glasses. Detailed analysis of emission spectra and decay time measurements led to the identification of Eu(3+) ions as the beta-PbF(2) crystalline phase. Excitation spectra at 70 K show the interaction of Eu(3+) ions with the fluorogermanate network.

Bismuth titanate ceramics (Bi 4Ti 3O 12) with 10 wt% in excess of bismuth (BIT10) were prepared by the polymeric precursor method and sinterized in microwave (MW) and conventional furnaces (CF). The effect of microwave energy on structural and electrical behavior of BIT10 ceramics was investigated by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and electrical measurements. The results of the BIT10 ceramics processed in the microwave furnace (MW) showed a high structural organization compared to conventional treatment (CF). Size of grains and dieletrical properties are influenced by annealing conditions while coercitive field is not dependent on it. The maximum dielectric permittivity (12000) was obtained for the sample sintered in the microwave furnace. Piezoelectric force microscopy images reveals that in-plane response may not change its sign upon polarization switching, while the out-of-plane response does with the influence of microwave energy. This paper reports the influence of Sr- and Ca-substitution on the structural and ferroelectric properties of Pb1-xSrxZr0.40Ti0.60O3 (PSZT) and Pb1-xCaxZr0.40Ti0.60O3 (PCZT) ceramic systems. The dielectric measurements show that these substitutions cause a diffuse behavior in the dielectric permittivity curves for all samples. According to the X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectra collected at Ti K- and LIII-edge, when Pb was replaced by Sr or Ca, a decrease in the local distortion around Ti atoms in the TiO6 octahedron could be observed. The O K-edge XANES spectra also revealed that the hybridization between O 2p and Pb 6sp states decreased as the amount of Sr or Ca atoms increased. Based on these results, it was possible to ascertain that the ferroelectric behavior in PSZT and PCZT samples bears a close correlation to the hybridization weakening between O 2p and Pb 6 sp states. © 2013 by American Scientific Publishers.

Single-phase Ba(Cd1/3Ta2/3)O-3 powder was produced using conventional solid state reaction methods. Ba(Cd1/3Ta2/3)O-3 ceramics with 2 wt % ZnO as sintering additive sintered at 1550 degreesC exhibited a dielectric constant of similar to32 and loss tangent of 5x10(-5) at 2 GHz. X-ray diffraction and thermogravimetric measurements were used to characterize the structural and thermodynamic properties of the material. Ab initio electronic structure calculations were used to give insight into the unusual properties of Ba(Cd1/3Ta2/3)O-3, as well as a similar and more widely used material Ba(Zn1/3Ta2/3)O-3. While both compounds have a hexagonal Bravais lattice, the P321 space group of Ba(Cd1/3Ta2/3)O-3 is reduced from P (3) under bar m1 of Ba(Zn1/3Ta2/3)O-3 as a result of a distortion of oxygen away from the symmetric position between the Ta and Cd ions. Both of the compounds have a conduction band minimum and valence band maximum composed of mostly weakly itinerant Ta 5d and Zn 3d/Cd 4d levels, respectively. The covalent nature of the directional d-electron bonding in these high-Z oxides plays an important role in producing a more rigid lattice with higher melting points and enhanced phonon energies, and is suggested to play an important role in producing materials with a high dielectric constant and low microwave loss. Bridges are an important part of society's infrastructure and reliable methods are necessary to monitor them and ensure their safety and efficiency. Bridges deteriorate with age and early detection of damage helps in prolonging the lives and prevent catastrophic failures. Most bridges still in used today were built decades ago and are now subjected to changes in load patterns, which can cause localized distress and if not corrected can result in bridge failure. In the past, monitoring of structures was usually done by means of visual inspection and tapping of the structures using a small hammer. Recent advancements of sensors and information technologies have resulted in new ways of monitoring the performance of structures. This paper briefly describes the current technologies used in bridge structures condition monitoring with its prime focus in the application of acoustic emission (AE) technology in the monitoring of bridge structures and its challenges.

The removal of fluoride using red mud has been improved by acidifying red mud with hydrochloric, nitric and sulphuric acid. This investigation shows that the removal of fluoride using red mud is significantly improved if red mud is initially acidified. The acidification of red mud causes sodalite and cancrinite phases to dissociate, confirmed by the release of sodium and aluminium into solution as well as the disappearance of sodalite bands and peaks in infrared and X-ray diffraction data. The dissolution of these mineral phases increases the amount of available iron and aluminium oxide/hydroxide sites that are accessible for the adsorption of fluoride. The removal of fluoride is dependent on the charge of iron and aluminium oxide/hydroxides on the surface of red mud. Acidifying red mud with hydrochloric, nitric and sulphuric acid resulted in surface sites of the form ≡ SOH2+ and ≡ SOH. Optimum removal is obtained when the majority of surface sites are in the form ≡ SOH2+ as the substitution of a fluoride ion doesn’t cause a significant increase in pH. This investigation shows the importance of having a low and consistent pH for the removal of fluoride from aqueous solutions using red mud.

Investigations on the phase relations and dielectric properties of (1 -x)BaTiO3 + xNd2/3TiO 3 (BNT) ceramics sintered in air below 1650 K have been carried out. X-ray powder diffraction studies indicate apparent phase singularity for compositions with x < 0.3. Nd2Ti207 is detected at higher neodymium concentrations. The unit cell parameter changes continuously with neodymium content, and BaTiO3 is completely cubic at room temperature with x -- 0.0525, whereas electron diffraction studies indicate that the air-sintered BNT ceramics with x > 0.08 contain additional phases that are partly amorphous even to an electron beam. SEM observations reveal that BaTiO3 grains are mostly covered by a molten intergranular phase, and show the presence of randomly distributed Nd2Ti207 grains. Energy dispersive X-ray analysis shows the Ba-Nd-Ti ternary composition of the intergranular phase. Differential thermal analysis studies support the formation of a partial melt involving dissolution-precipitation of boundary layers of BaTiO3 grains. These complex phase relations are accounted for in terms of the phase instability of BaTiO3 with large cation-vacancy concentration as a result of heavy Nd 3+ substitution. The absence of structural intergrowth in (1 - x)BaTiO3 + xNd2/3TiO3 under oxidative conditions leads to a separation of phases wherein the new phases undergo melting and remain X-ray amorphous. BNT ceramics with 0.1 < x < 0.3 have ~eff >~ 104 with tan 6 < 0.1 and nearly flat temperature capacitance characteristics. The grain-size dependence of ee,, variations of ~eff and tan 6 with the measuring frequency, the non-ohmic resistivities, and the non-linear leakage currents at higher field-strengths which are accompanied by the decrease in eeff and rise in tan 3, are explained on the basis of an intergranular (internal boundary layer) dielectric characteristic of these ceramics.

Monophasic Na0.5La0.5Bi4Ti4O15 powders were synthesized via the conventional solid-state reaction route. The X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), selected area electron diffraction (SAED) and high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) studies carried out on the as synthesized powdered samples confirmed the phase to be a four-layer Aurivillius that crystallizes in an orthorhombic A2(1)am space group. The microstructure and the chemical composition of the sintered sample were examined by scanning electron microscope (SEM) equipped with an energy dispersive X-ray analyzer (EDX). The dielectric properties of the ceramics have been studied in the 27-700 degrees C temperature range at various frequencies (100 Hz to 1 MHz). A sharp dielectric anomaly was observed at 580 degrees C for all the frequencies corresponding to the ferroelectric to paraelectric phase transition. Saturated ferroelectric hysteresis loops were observed at 200 degrees C and the associated remnant polarization (P-r) and coercive field (E-c) were found to be 7.4 mu C/cm(2) and 34.8 kV/cm, respectively. AC conductivity analysis confirmed the existence of two different conduction mechanisms in the ferroelectric region. Activation energies calculated from the Arrhenius plots were similar to 0.24 eV and similar to 0.84 eV in the 300-450 degrees C and 450-580 degrees C temperature ranges, respectively. Sr2TiMnO6, a double perovskite associated with high degree of B-site cation disorder was investigated in detail for its structural, magnetic, and dielectric properties. Though x-ray powder diffraction analysis confirms its cubic structure, first order Raman scattering and infrared reflectivity spectra indicate a breaking of the local cubic symmetry. The magnetization study reveals an anomaly at 14 K owing to a ferrimagnetic/canted antiferromagneticlike ordering arising from local Mn-O-Mn clusters. Saturated M-H hysteresis loops obtained at 5 K also reflect the weak ferromagnetic exchange interactions present in the system and an approximate estimation of Mn3+/Mn4+ was done using the magnetization data for the samples sintered at different temperatures. The conductivity and dielectric behavior of this system has been investigated in a broad temperature range of 10 to 300 K. Intrinsic permittivity was obtained only below 100 K whereas giant permittivity due to conductivity and Maxwell-Wagner polarization was observed at higher temperatures. X-ray photoemission studies further confirmed the presence of mixed oxidation states of Mn and the valence band spectra analysis was carried out in detail. Magnetic properties of pure, Sr- and Ca-Doped La2NiO4+δ ceramics: Onset of high-Tc superconductivity
Resumo:
We present the results for the temperature and field dependence of the magnetic for ceramic materials of the composition La2−xMxNiO4, with M=Sr or Ca and 0≤x≤0.4. The onset of a strong diamagnetism has been observed at temperatures between 8 and 70 K, depending on sample composition, annealing conditions. and thermal cycling procedures. The results are similar to those obtained earlier for monocrystalline samples and are likewise interpreted as due to the onset of superconductivity in a minority phase. A comparison with the results for superconducting La1.8Sr0.2Cu0.9Ni0.1O4 ceramics is also made; this illustrates some unique features of the nickelate systems, such as the high values of the critical fields Hc1 and Hc2. The differences between monocrystalline and ceramic systems are also discussed.
