The Internet of Things (IoT) has emerged as a paradigm over the last few years as a result of the tight integration of the computing and the physical world. The requirement of remote sensing makes low-power wireless sensor networks one of the key enabling technologies of IoT. These networks encompass several challenges, especially in communication and networking, due to their inherent constraints of low-power features, deployment in harsh and lossy environments, and limited computing and storage resources. The IPv6 Routing Protocol for Low Power and Lossy Networks (RPL) [1] was proposed by the IETF ROLL (Routing Over Low-power Lossy links) working group and is currently adopted as an IETF standard in the RFC 6550 since March 2012. Although RPL greatly satisfied the requirements of low-power and lossy sensor networks, several issues remain open for improvement and specification, in particular with respect to Quality of Service (QoS) guarantees and support for mobility. In this paper, we focus mainly on the RPL routing protocol. We propose some enhancements to the standard specification in order to provide QoS guarantees for static as well as mobile LLNs. For this purpose, we propose OF-FL (Objective Function based on Fuzzy Logic), a new objective function that overcomes the limitations of the standardized objective functions that were designed for RPL by considering important link and node metrics, namely end-to-end delay, number of hops, ETX (Expected transmission count) and LQL (Link Quality Level). In addition, we present the design of Co-RPL, an extension to RPL based on the corona mechanism that supports mobility in order to overcome the problem of slow reactivity to frequent topology changes and thus providing a better quality of service mainly in dynamic networks application. Performance evaluation results show that both OF-FL and Co-RPL allow a great improvement when compared to the standard specification, mainly in terms of packet loss ratio and average network latency. 2015 Elsevier B.V. Hand gestures are a powerful way for human communication, with lots of potential applications in the area of human computer interaction. Vision-based hand gesture recognition techniques have many proven advantages compared with traditional devices, giving users a simpler and more natural way to communicate with electronic devices. This work proposes a generic system architecture based in computer vision and machine learning, able to be used with any interface for human-computer interaction. The proposed solution is mainly composed of three modules: a pre-processing and hand segmentation module, a static gesture interface module and a dynamic gesture interface module. The experiments showed that the core of visionbased interaction systems could be the same for all applications and thus facilitate the implementation. For hand posture recognition, a SVM (Support Vector Machine) model was trained and used, able to achieve a final accuracy of 99.4%. For dynamic gestures, an HMM (Hidden Markov Model) model was trained for each gesture that the system could recognize with a final average accuracy of 93.7%. The proposed solution as the advantage of being generic enough with the trained models able to work in real-time, allowing its application in a wide range of human-machine applications. To validate the proposed framework two applications were implemented. The first one is a real-time system able to interpret the Portuguese Sign Language. The second one is an online system able to help a robotic soccer game referee judge a game in real time.

OBJETIVO: Relatar as manifestações clínicas e características demográficas de pacientes com febre reumática atendidos em serviço público no Estado do Acre. MÉTODOS: Estudo de corte transversal em pacientes atendidos consecutivamente no Ambulatório de Cardiologia da FUNDHACRE, avaliados através de questionário contendo dados demográficos, clínicos e laboratoriais. O diagnóstico de febre reumática foi realizado através da aplicação dos critérios de Jones, em associação com dados laboratoriais, eletrocardiograma, radiografia de tórax e ecocardiograma bidimensional. Excluídos portadores com outras cardiopatias, diabetes, obesidade, doenças inflamatórias, processos infecciosos, tabagismo, gestantes, uso de drogas anti-inflamatórias ou reposição hormonal. RESULTADOS: De julho/2003 a fevereiro/2004, foram avaliados 99 pacientes com febre reumática aguda (idade média de 11 anos, dp= ± 10,18) com predominância feminina (59,6%) e fenótipo racial mestiço de índio (60,6%). Excluídos 3 indivíduos, por não preencherem os critérios diagnósticos. A idade média de início foi de 9,1 anos, sendo que em 30,4% dos pacientes a doença foi diagnosticada no primeiro episódio de atividade reumática. As manifestações clínicas mais freqüentes foram cardite (69,7%), artrite (21,4%) e coréia (6,1%) e a regurgitação mitral (36,4%) a lesão mais comum seguida da associação de regurgitação mitral com aórtica (9,1%). CONCLUSÃO: Cardite reumática foi a manifestação mais freqüente de febre reumática, predominando no grupo racial mestiço de índio (60,6%), A baixa aderência à antibioticoprofilaxia contribuiu para recorrências e seqüelas cardíacas.

This paper analyzes the growth and employment effects of the 1994-99 Community Support Framework (CSF) for the Objective 1 Spanish regions using a simple supply-side model estimated with a panel of regional data. The results suggest that the impact of the Structural Funds in Spain has been quite sizable, adding around a percentage point to annual output growth in the average Objective 1 region and 0.4 points to employment growth. Over the period 1994-2000, the Framework has resulted in the creation of over 300,000 new jobs and has eliminated 20% of the initial gap in income per capita between the assisted regions and the rest of the country.
