After detachment from benthic habitats, the epibiont assemblages on floating seaweeds undergo substantial changes, but little is known regarding whether succession varies among different seaweed species. Given that floating algae may represent a limiting habitat in many regions, rafting organisms may be unselective and colonize any available seaweed patch at the sea surface. This process may homogenize rafting assemblages on different seaweed species, which our study examined by comparing the assemblages on benthic and floating individuals of the fucoid seaweeds Fucus vesiculosus and Sargassum muticum in the northern Wadden Sea (North Sea). Species richness was about twice as high on S. muticum as on F. vesiculosus, both on benthic and floating individuals. In both seaweed species benthic samples were more diverse than floating samples. However, the species composition differed significantly only between benthic thalli, but not between floating thalli of the two seaweed species. Separate analyses of sessile and mobile epibionts showed that the homogenization of rafting assemblages was mainly caused by mobile species. Among these, grazing isopods from the genus Idotea reached extraordinarily high densities on the floating samples from the northern Wadden Sea, suggesting that the availability of seaweed rafts was indeed limiting. Enhanced break-up of algal rafts associated with intense feeding by abundant herbivores might force rafters to recolonize benthic habitats. These colonization processes may enhance successful dispersal of rafting organisms and thereby contribute to population connectivity between sink populations in the Wadden Sea and source populations from up-current regions.

Cores from Sites 689 and 690 of Ocean Drilling Program Leg 113 provide the most continuous Paleocene and Eocene sequence yet recovered by deep sea drilling in the high latitudes of the Southern Ocean. The nannofossil-foraminifer oozes and chalks recovered from Maud Rise at 65°S in the Weddell Sea provide a unique opportunity for biostratigraphic study of extremely high southern latitude carbonate sediments. The presence of warm water index fossils such as the discoasters and species of the Tribrachiatus plexus facilitate the application of commonly used low latitude calcareous nannofossil biostratigraphic zonation schemes for the upper Paleocene and lower Eocene intervals. In the more complete section at Site 690, Okada and Bukry Zones CP1 through CP10 can be identified for the most part with the possible exception of Zone CP3. Several hiatuses are present in the sequence at Site 689 with the most notable being at the Cretaceous/Tertiary and Paleocene/Eocene boundaries. Though not extremely diverse, the assemblage of discoasters in the upper Paleocene and lower Eocene calcareous oozes is indicative of warm, relatively equable climates during that interval. A peak in discoaster diversity in uppermost Paleocene sediments (Zone CP8) corresponds to a negative shift in 5180 values. Associated coccolith assemblages are quite characteristic of high latitudes with abundant Chiasmolithus, Prinsius, and Toweius. Climatic cooling is indicated for middle Eocene sediments by assemblages that contain very abundant Reticulofenestra, lack common discoasters and sphenoliths and are much less diverse overall. Two new taxa are described, Biscutum? neocoronum n. sp. and Amithalithina sigmundii n. gen., n. sp.

Early Miocene to Quaternary benthic foraminifers have been quantitatively studied (>63 ?m size fraction) in a southwest Pacific traverse of DSDP sites at depths from about 1300 to 3200 m down the Lord Howe Rise (Site 590,1299 m; Site 591, 2131 m; Site 206, 3196 m). Benthic foraminiferal species smaller than 150 µm are by far dominant in the samples, averaging from 78 to 89% of the total benthic foraminiferal assemblages in the three sites examined. Although about 150 benthic foraminiferal species or taxonomic groups have been identified, only a few species dominate the assemblages. These dominant species include Epistominella exigua, E. rotunda, and Globocassidulina subglobosa, which prevail in the three sites, and Oridorsalis umbonatus, E. umbonifera, and Cassidulina carinata, which occur usually in frequencies of between 10 and 30%. Faunal changes in Neogene benthic foraminiferal assemblages are not similar in each of the three sites, but faunal successions are most similar between the two shallowest sites. The deepest site differs in composition and distribution of dominant species. There are three intervals during which the most important changes occur in benthic foraminiferal assemblages: the early middle Miocene (14 Ma; the Orbulina suturalis Zone and the Globorotalia fohsi s.l. Zone); the late Miocene (6 Ma; the Globigerina nepenthes Zone) and near the Pliocene/Pleistocene boundary at about 2 Ma. A Q-mode factor analysis of the faunal data has assisted in recognizing assemblage changes during the Neogene at each of the sites. Early Miocene assemblages were dominated by Globocassidulina subglobosa at Site 590 (1299 m), by G. subglobosa and Oridorsalis umbonatus at Site 591 (2131 m), and by G. subglobosa, E. exigua, and Bolivina pusilla at Site 206 (3196 m). In the early middle Miocene at Sites 590 and 591, a marked increase occurred in the frequencies of E. exigua. Epistominella exigua reached maximum abundance in the early Miocene in the deeper Site 206, and in the middle and early late Miocene in the shallower Sites 590 and 591. In the late Miocene, a spike occurred in the frequencies of E. umbonifera in Site 206, whereas the dominant species changed from E. exigua to E. rotunda at Site 590. Latest Miocene to late Pliocene assemblages were dominated by E. rotunda at Site 590, by E. exigua at Site 591, and by G. subglobosa-E. exigua (early Pliocene) and E. rotunda-E. exigua (late Pliocene) at Site 206. At the Pliocene/Pleistocene boundary, E. exigua temporarily diminished in importance at Sites 591 and 206. Quaternary assemblages were dominated by E. rotunda and Cassidulina carinata at Site 590, by E. rotunda at Site 591, and by E. exigua at Site 206. These major faunal changes are all associated with known major paleoceanographic events-the middle Miocene development of the Antarctic ice sheet; the latest Miocene global cooling and increased polar glaciation; and the onset of quasiperiodic glaciation of the Northern Hemisphere. These major paleoceanographic events undoubtedly had a profound effect on the intermediate and deep water mass structure of the Tasman Sea as recorded by changes in benthic foraminiferal assemblages.

Formenkreisen an. Neue Genera: Nr. (165) Ludwigiapollis Nr., (248) Caesalpiniaceaepollenites, 311 Neue Spezies: (039) Polypodiaceoisporltes subtriangularis, (046) P. pityogrammoides, (067) Perinomonoletes imperfectus, (124) Cycadopltes gemmatus, (125) C. concinus, (133) Lillacidites tener, (137) Nupharipollenites microechinatus, (150) Polyporopollenites nanus, (161) Porocolpopollenites subrotundus, (165) Ludwigiapollis labiatus, (169) Sporotrapoidites cucculatus, (190) Tricolpopollenites cribosus, (192) T. variabilis, (204) Tricolporopollenites pulcher, (210) T. operculiferus, (213) T. pseudomarcodurensis, (217) T. magnolaevigatus, (245) Umbelliferaepollenites achldorfensis, (248) Caesalpiniaceaepollenites antiquus Neukombinationen: (081) Pityosporites koraensis, (128) Magnoliaepollenites magnolioides, (130) M. graciliexinus, (168) Sporotrapoidites erdtmannii, (177) Chenopodipollis psilatoides. (z. B. Tricolpopollenites asper, T. sp. 2 u.a.).

Ostracodes are less common than might be normally expected at Sites 642, 643, and 644, perhaps pointing to the fact that the marine habitat below the overlying Pleistocene ice covers was a severe environment. This explanation, however, would not apply to the Pliocene and Miocene deposits from which ostracodes are just as poorly represented. In the latter case the Iceland-Faeroe Ridge might still have acted as a submerged barrier that did not allow an open ocean circulation of bottom waters. Thus the barrier presumably prevented an exchange of cold subarctic bottom water with that of the open Atlantic and therefore benthic deep-sea migration from the south was impeded. Some Quaternary species are, for the first time, recorded to extend to the Pliocene and/or Miocene.

Eocene siliceous and calcareous phytoplankton, with emphasis on silicoflagellates, were studied in 62 samples from DSDP Sites 612 and 613 on the continental slope and rise off New Jersey. The mid-latitude assemblages correlate well with assemblages from California, Peru, and offshore of southern Brazil, but are distinctly different from high-latitude cold-water assemblages of the Falkland Plateau off southern Argentina. Coccoliths and silicoflagellates provide evidence for the presence of a fairly complete middle and upper Eocene sequence, represented by a composite of Sites 612 and 613. A major unconformity occurs at the middle Eocene to upper Eocene contact at Site 612. The genus Bachmannocena Locker is emended and proposed as a replacement for genus Mesocena Ehrenberg for ring silicoflagellates. Six new silicoflagellates and one new diatom are described: Bachmannocena apiculata monolineata Bukry, n. subsp., Corbisema amicula Bukry, n. sp., C. bimucronata elegans Bukry, n. subsp., C. hastata incohata Bukry, n. subsp., C. jerseyensis Bukry, n. sp., Dictyocha acuta Bukry, n. sp., and Coscinodiscus eomonoculus Bukry, n. sp. Also, one new replacement name, B. paulschulzn Bukry, nom. nov., and 24 new combinations are proposed for genus Bachmannocena.

Benthic foraminifers from Ocean Drilling Program Leg 199 Holes 1215A, 1220B, and 1221C were examined across the Paleocene/Eocene boundary. Assemblages were studied in 240 samples. The benthic foraminiferal extinction event that correlates with the Paleocene/Eocene epoch boundary was recognized at these sites. Benthic assemblages before the event are characterized by high diversity, but those after the event are low in diversity. An assemblage of agglutinated foraminifers without carbonate cement was recognized at Sites 1220 and 1221. These assemblages were typically found after the event. The discovery of such agglutinated assemblages has never been reported before at this boundary.

The present study on ODP Leg 151 Hole 907A combines a detailed analysis of marine palynomorphs (dinoflagellate cysts, prasinophytes, and acritarchs) and a low-resolution alkenone-based sea-surface temperature (SST) record for the interval between 14.5 and 2.5 Ma, and allows to investigate the relationship between palynomorph assemblages and the paleoenvironmental evolution of the Iceland Sea. A high marine productivity is indicated in the Middle Miocene, and palynomorphs and SSTs both mirror the subsequent long-term Neogene climate deterioration. The diverse Middle Miocene palynomorph assemblages clearly diminish towards the impoverished assemblages of the Late Pliocene; parallel with a somewhat gradual decrease of SSTs being as high as 20 °C at ~13.5 Ma to around 8 °C at ~3 Ma. Superimposed, palynomorph assemblages not only reflect Middle to Late Miocene climate variability partly coinciding with the short-lived global Miocene isotope events (Mi-events), but also the initiation of a proto-thermohaline circulation across the Middle Miocene Climate Transition, which led to increased meridionality in the Nordic Seas. Last occurrences of species cluster during three events in the Late Miocene to Early Pliocene and are ascribed to the progressive strengthening and freshening of the proto-East Greenland Current towards modern conditions. A significant high latitude cooling between 6.5 and 6 Ma is depicted by the supraregional "Decahedrella event" coeval with lowest Miocene productivity and a SST decline. In the Early Pliocene, a transient warming is accompanied by surface water stratification and increased productivity that likely reflects a high latitude response to the global biogenic bloom. The succeeding crash in palynomorph accumulation, and a subsequent interval virtually barren of marine palynomorphs may be attributed to enhanced bottom water oxygenation and substantial sea ice cover, and indicates that conditions seriously affecting marine productivity in the Iceland Sea were already established well before the marked expansion of the Greenland Ice Sheet at 3.3 Ma.

This paper documents the biostratigraphic distribution and abundance of diatoms from sites drilled during Ocean Drilling Program Leg 178, off the Pacific margin of the Antarctic Peninsula. Drift sediments cored on the continental rise at Sites 1095, 1096, and 1101 have good recovery and a well-defined paleomagnetic record. Well-preserved diatoms are present throughout the upper Miocene to middle Pliocene and in the upper Quaternary section of these sites. The stratigraphic occurrence of diatom species through these intervals defines numerous datum levels. Diatom events are given absolute age estimates through direct correlation to the established paleomagnetic stratigraphy of Sites 1095, 1096, and 1101. Leg 178 diatom biostratigraphic results enable the development of a regional stratigraphic framework for the Pacific sector of the Southern Ocean and record the interaction of open-ocean and shelf-margin diatom floras.

A generally rich radiolarian fauna ranging in age from Quaternary to early Eocene (Zone RP7) was found at five of the eight sites drilled during Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 199. Of particular interest are the stratigraphically complete assemblages that range in age from middle Miocene (Zone RN5) to early Eocene (Zone RP7), composites of Sites 1218, 1219, and 1220. At the same sites, multisensor track (MST) data show consistent cycles in gamma ray attenuation density, color, and carbonate content that can be correlated on a submeter scale from the early Miocene to early Eocene. In addition, the magnetic reversal records from these three sites allow construction of an absolute timescale. A series of 305 radiolarian morphologic first and last occurrences and evolutionary transitions for radiolarians were determined and correlated directly with the accompanying MST and paleomagnetic data, resulting in a detailed and accurate dating of events. Since many of the bioevents are found at more than one site, it was also possible to test their reliability within the study area. Twelve new species are described: Calocycletta (Calocycletta) anekathen, Dorcadospyris anastasis, Dorcadospyris copelata, Dorcadospyris cyclacantha, Dorcadospyris ombros, Dorcadospyris scambos, Eucyrtidium mitodes, Theocyrtis careotuberosa, Theocyrtis perpumila, Theocyrtis perysinos, Theocyrtis setanios, and Thyrsocyrtis (Pentalacorys) orthotenes.

The 136 m of calcareous oozes recovered in Hole 810C span the interval from upper Maastrichtian to middle Pleistocene. Three major hiatuses interrupt the sequence, with the topmost part of the Maastrichtian through the entire lower Paleocene, most of the lower Eocene, and the entire middle Eocene through most of the middle Miocene missing. Severe reworking and displacement affected the lower part of the succession from the Maastrichtian through the middle Miocene. Reworking and displacement gradually decreased in the upper portion. Calcareous nannofossil biostratigraphy enabled us to calibrate precisely the nearly complete magnetic reversal sequence of the Pliocene to the late Pleistocene. Two minor hiatuses detected by calcareous nannofossils across the Pliocene/Pleistocene boundary and in the upper lower Pleistocene, respectively, resulted in shortening of the Olduvai and Jaramillo Events within the Matuyama Chron of the magnetic reversal sequence.

Pollen, spore, and dinoflagellate cyst floras of Late Cretaceous age were found at Sites 748 (120-748C-62R through -79R) and 750 (120-750B-11W) of Ocean Drilling Program Leg 120 to the Kerguelen Plateau area in the Southern Indian Ocean. The ranges of dinocyst and sporomorph species indicate ages between the Cenomanian and Coniacian (to possibly the early Santonian). The ratio of marine/terrestrial flora elements is extremely variable, showing a trend from highly terrestrial (up to -70%) in the late Cenomanian to highly marine (up to 90%) in the Coniacian/early Santonian. Low sedimentation rates of about 3-5 cm/1000 yr were calculated for the glauconitic sediments of Turonian and Coniacian age at Site 748 (lithologic Subunit IIIB).

Southern China, especially Yunnan, has undergone high tectonic activity caused by the uplift of Himalayan Mountains during the Neogene, which led to a fast changing palaeogeography. Previous study shows that Southern China has been influenced by the Asian Monsoon since at least the Early Miocene. However, it is yet not well understood how intense the Miocene monsoon system was. In the present study, 63 fossil floras of 16 localities from Southern China are compiled and evaluated for obtaining available information concerning floristic composition, stratigraphic age, sedimentology, etc. Based on such reliable information, selected mega- and micro-floras have been analysed with the coexistence approach to obtain quantitative palaeoclimate data. Visualization of climate results in maps shows a distinct spatial differentiation in Southern China during the Miocene. Higher seasonalities of temperature and precipitation occur in the north and south parts of Southern China, respectively. During the Miocene, most regions of Southern China and Europe were both warm and humid. Central Eurasia was likely to be an arid center, which gradually spread westward and eastward. Our data provide information about Miocene climate patterns in Southern China and about the evolution of these patterns throughout the Miocene, and is also crucial to unravel and understand the climatic signals of global cooling and tectonic uplift.

Neogene stratigraphy of the tropical and subtropical Pacific on radiolaria is studied in the book. A detailed comparison of coeval systems from tropics and subtropics is given. A possibility of use of a uniform zonal scale in these areas is proved. Magnitude of changes of complexes on borders of Neogene zones is studied in detail. Six stages in development of radiolarians are identified in the tropics in Neogene. Stratigraphic levels, where the greatest changes of fauna occurred, are natural boundaries of these stages. 72 species of radiolarians (two of which are new) are described in the book.

We report on benthic foraminifer results from Site 717 in the Distal Bengal Fan. Only 80 out of 380 samples contained useful benthic foraminifer information. However, we were able to identify four assemblages: 1. A present-day one dominated by Nuttallides umbonifera with some North Atlantic species; 2. An agglutinated fauna consisting of one species; 3. A reworked assemblage consisting of shallow-water forms; and 4. A reworked fauna consisting of an abundance of all kinds of forms including Cretaceous species. The reworked assemblage 4, we believe, represents a period when fan sediments were blocked from this area by east-west trending intraplate deformation. In the remainder of the core section, sedimentation appears to be dominated by Fan deposition with abundant terrestrial debris. In the infrequent pelagic intervals, it appears that abyssal water masses changed little since the late Miocene.
