Mobile applications are becoming increasingly more complex and making heavier demands on local system resources. Moreover, mobile systems are nowadays more open, allowing users to add more and more applications, including third-party developed ones. In this perspective, it is increasingly expected that users will want to execute in their devices applications which supersede currently available resources. It is therefore important to provide frameworks which allow applications to benefit from resources available on other nodes, capable of migrating some or all of its services to other nodes, depending on the user needs. These requirements are even more stringent when users want to execute Quality of Service (QoS) aware applications, such as voice or video. The required resources to guarantee the QoS levels demanded by an application can vary with time, and consequently, applications should be able to reconfigure themselves. This paper proposes a QoS-aware service-based framework able to support distributed, migration-capable, QoS-enabled applications on top of the Android Operating system.

According to recent studies, informal learning accounts for more than 75% of our continuous learning through life. However, the awareness of this learning, its benefits and its potential is still not very clear. In engineering contexts, informal learning could play an invaluable role helping students or employees to engage with peers and also with more experience colleagues, exchanging ideas and discussing problems. This work presents an initial set of results of the piloting phase of a project (TRAILER) where an innovative service based on Information & Communication Technologies was developed in order to aid the collection and visibility of informal learning. This set of results concerns engineering contexts (academic and business), from the learners' perspective. The major idea that emerged from these piloting trials was that it represented a good way of collecting, recording and sharing informal learning that otherwise could easily be forgotten. Several benefits were reported between the two communities such as being helpful in managing competences and human resources within an institution.

A evolução tecnológica das últimas décadas na área das Tecnologias da Informação e Comunicação (TIC) contribuiu para a proliferação de fontes de informação e de sistemas de partilha de recursos. As diversas redes sociais são um exemplo paradigmático de sistemas de partilha tanto de informação como de recursos (e.g. audiovisuais). Essa abundância crescente de recursos e fontes aumenta a importância de sistemas capazes de recomendar em tempo útil recursos personalizados, tendo por base o perfil e o contexto do utilizador. O objetivo deste projeto é partilhar e recomendar locais, artigos e vídeos em função do contexto do utilizador assim como proporcionar uma experiência mais rica de reprodução dos vídeos partilhados, simulando as condições de gravação dos vídeos. Este sistema teve como inspiração dois projetos anteriormente desenvolvidos de partilha e recomendação de locais, artigos e vídeos turísticos em função da localização do utilizador. O sistema desenvolvido consiste numa aplicação distribuída composta por um módulo cliente Android, que inclui a interface com o utilizador e o consumo direto de serviços externos de suporte, e um módulo servidor que controla o acesso à base de dados central e inclui o serviço de recomendação baseado no contexto do utilizador. A comunicação entre os módulos cliente e servidor utiliza um protocolo do nível de aplicação dedicado. As recomendações geradas pelo sistema têm por base o perfil de utilizador, informação contextual (posição do utilizador, data e hora atual e velocidade atual do utilizador) e podem ser geradas a pedido do utilizador ou automaticamente, caso sejam encontrados pontos de interesse de grande relevância para o utilizador. Os pontos de interesse recomendados são apresentados com recurso ao Google Maps, incluindo o período de funcionamento, artigos complementares e a reprodução imersiva dos vídeos relacionados. Essa imersão tem em consideração as condições meteorológicas, temporais e espaciais aquando da gravação do vídeo.

Delay Tolerant Network (DTN) é uma arquitetura de redes que procura resolver os problemas associados à conetividade intermitente de sistemas e possibilita a existência de comunicações em ambientes onde o conjunto de protocolos tradicionais TCP/IP não funciona. A arquitetura DTN é adequada a cenários com uma topologia de rede dinâmica, densidade de nós reduzida, conetividade intermitente e de curta duração entre os nós, e em que as aplicações são tolerantes ao atraso. Nesta dissertação é apresentada uma solução de baixo custo recorrendo ao conceito DTN que permite a utilizadores de embarcações utilizarem o serviço de correio eletrónico no mar. A solução estende o sistema de correio eletrónico ao cenário marítimo recorrendo a estações na costa, comunicação sem fios entre embarcações e entre estas e a estações na costa, e à capacidade das embarcações funcionarem como meios de transporte de dados. Para proceder à validação da proposta apresentada, foi implementado um protótipo com o sistema de correio eletrónico adaptado ao cenário marítimo. O protótipo é constituído por vários nós, configurados de forma a assumir o papel de embarcações, estação da costa e um servidor de e-mail presente na Internet. Os resultados dos testes experimentais realizados em ambiente controlado mostram que os objetivos do trabalho foram alcançados. O serviço de e-mail assente sobre a arquitetura DTN e adaptado ao cenário de comunicações marítimo foi testado em diferentes contextos, e em todos eles, as experiências tiveram resultados positivos.

The link between energy consumption and economic growth has been widely studied in the economic literature. Understanding this relationship is important from both an environmental and a socio-economic point of view, as energy consumption is crucial to economic activity and human environmental impact. This relevance is even higher for developing countries, since energy consumption per unit of output varies through the phases of development, increasing from an agricultural stage to an industrial one and then decreasing for certain service based economies. In the Argentinean case, the relevance of energy consumption to economic development seems to be particularly important. While energy intensity seems to exhibit a U-Shaped curve from 1990 to 2003 decreasing slightly after that year, total energy consumption increases along the period of analysis. Why does this happen? How can we relate this result with the sustainability debate? All these questions are very important due to Argentinean hydrocarbons dependence and due to the recent reduction in oil and natural gas reserves, which can lead to a lack of security of supply. In this paper we study Argentinean energy consumption pattern for the period 1990-2007, to discuss current and future energy and economic sustainability. To this purpose, we developed a conventional analysis, studying energy intensity, and a non conventional analysis, using the Multi-Scale Integrated Analysis of Societal and Ecosystem Metabolism (MuSIASEM) accounting methodology. Both methodologies show that the development process followed by Argentina has not been good enough to assure sustainability in the long term. Instead of improving energy use, energy intensity has increased. The current composition of its energy mix, and the recent economic crisis in Argentina, as well as its development path, are some of the possible explanations.

The systematic collection of behavioural information is an important component of second-generation HIV surveillance. The extent of behavioural surveillance among injecting drug users (IDUs) in Europe was examined using data collected through a questionnaire sent to all 31 countries of the European Union and European Free Trade Association as part of a European-wide behavioural surveillance mapping study on HIV and other sexually transmitted infections. The questionnaire was returned by 28 countries during August to September 2008: 16 reported behavioural surveillance studies (two provided no further details). A total of 12 countries used repeated surveys for behavioural surveillance and five used their Treatment Demand Indicator system (three used both approaches). The data collected focused on drug use, injecting practices, testing for HIV and hepatitis C virus and access to healthcare. Eight countries had set national indicators: three indicators were each reported by five countries: the sharing any injecting equipment, uptake of HIV testing and uptake of hepatitis C virus testing. The recall periods used varied. Seven countries reported conducting one-off behavioural surveys (in one country without a repeated survey, these resulted an informal surveillance structure). All countries used convenience sampling, with service-based recruitment being the most common approach. Four countries had used respondent-driven sampling. Three fifths of the countries responding (18/28) reported behavioural surveillance activities among IDUs; however, harmonisation of behavioural surveillance indicators is needed.

The development of new rail systems in the first part of the 21st century is the result of a wide range of trends that are making it increasingly difficult to maintain regional mobility using the two dominant intercity travel modes, auto and air. These trends include the changing character of the economic structure of industry. The character of the North American industrial structure is moving rapidly from a manufacturing base to a service based economy. This is increasing the need for business travel while the increase in disposable income due to higher salaries has promoted increased social and tourist travel. Another trend is the change in the regulatory environment. The trend towards deregulation has dramatically reduced the willingness of the airlines to operate from smaller airports and the level of service has fallen due to the creation of hub and spoke systems. While new air technology such as regional jets may mitigate this trend to some degree in medium-size airports, smaller airports will continue to lose out. Finally, increasing environmental concerns have reduced the ability of the automobile to meet intercity travel needs because of increased suburban congestion and limited highway capacity in big cities. Against this background the rail mode offers new options due to first, the existing rail rights-of-way offering direct access into major cities that, in most cases, have significant capacity available and, second, a revolution in vehicle technology that makes new rail rolling stock faster and less expensive to purchase and operate. This study is designed to evaluate the potential for rail service making an important contribution to maintaining regional mobility over the next 30 to 50 years in Iowa. The study evaluates the potential for rail service on three key routes across Iowa and assesses the impact of new train technology in reducing costs and improving rail service. The study also considers the potential for developing the system on an incremental basis. The service analysis and recommendations do not involve current Amtrak intercity service. That service is presumed to continue on its current route and schedule. The study builds from data and analyses that have been generated for the Midwest Rail Initiative (MWRI) Study. For example, the zone system and operating and capital unit cost assumptions are derived from the MWRI study. The MWRI represents a cooperative effort between nine Midwest states, Amtrak and the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) contracting with Transportation Economics & Management Systems, Inc. to evaluate the potential for a regional rail system. This inventory of transit services in Iowa covers urban transit, intercity passenger bus carriers and charter operators, taxicab operations, rural transit services and special services, and includes the results of questionnaire and interview surveys, and the resulting recommendations. The recommendations urge a centralized source of data and expertise, a public information program, the utilization of federal aid, the continuance of existing transit services with no dimunition of service level, the establishment of new services in communities of over 20,000 population, the sponsorship of demonstrations in communities with populations of 10,000 to 20,000, and the development and improvement of rural transit service. Based on state and local community experience, recommendations are made concerning revenue sources to support transit in Iowa, and four alternative state transit assistance programs are presented.

Cette thèse explore le rôle de la normalisation technique dans les délocalisations de services en Inde et au Maroc. La recherche appréhende le phénomène en opposant explicitement ou implicitement deux modèles. Un modèle serviciel dans lequel les activités de services sont difficilement délocalisables parce que non-mesurables ; un modèle industriel qui articule des activités de services mesurables par les normes techniques et susceptibles d'être délocalisés dans les pays du Sud à bas salaires. Notre thèse s'interroge sur la manière dont les relations Nord-Sud peuvent s'appréhender au sein de cette dichotomie et propose une réflexion épistémologique sur les représentations culturelles induites au sein de ce cadrage. A partir d'une perspective qui combine les apports de l'économie politique culturelle, la sociologie économique et les études postcoloniales au sein de l'économie politique internationale, elle mobilise trois catégories (la normalisation technique, l'imaginaire économique, la qualité). Ces catégories nous permettent de suggérer la centralité des enjeux de pouvoirs dans la définition de ce que sont les activités de services. L'analyse empirique suggère que les délocalisations de services au Maroc et en Inde expriment des réalités plus poreuses et plus dynamiques que la dichotomie entre modèle serviciel et modèle industriel laisse entendre. Elle met en évidence la capacité d'agir des acteurs des pays du Sud et suggère que les normes techniques ont une fonction politique à travers leurs fonctions de mesure. Abstract This thesis explores the role of technical standards in offshore outsourcing in India and Morocco. Current research captures the phenomenon while opposing explicitly or implicitly two models of production. A service-based model in which service activities are difficult to relocate because they are non-measurable; an industrial model that articulates service activities measured with technical standards and that may be outsourced to developing countries with low wages. Our thesis questions how North-South relations can be grasped within this dichotomy and offers an epistemologica! reflection on cultural representations induced within this framework. From a perspective that combines the contributions of cultural political economy, economic sociology and postcolonial studies in international political economy, it mobilizes three categories (technical standardization, the economic imaginary and quality). These categories allow us to suggest the centrality of power issues in the definition of service activities. The empirical analysis suggests that offshoring of services in Morocco and India express more porous and dynamic realities than the dichotomy suggested between a service model and an industrial model. It highlights the ability of the actors to act in the South and suggests that technical standards have a political function through their measurement functions.

An Unmanned Aerial Vehicle is a non-piloted airplane designed to operate in dangerous and repetitive situations. With the advent of UAV's civil applications, UAVs are emerging as a valid option in commercial scenarios. If it must be economically viable, the same platform should implement avariety of missions with little reconguration time and overhead.This paper presents a middleware-based architecture specially suited to operate as a exible payload and mission controller in a UAV. The system is composed of low-costcomputing devices connected by network. The functionality is divided into reusable services distributed over a number ofnodes with a middleware managing their lifecycle and communication.Some research has been done in this area; yetit is mainly focused on the control domain and in its realtime operation. Our proposal differs in that we address the implementation of adaptable and reconfigurable unmannedmissions in low-cost and low-resources hardware.

Työn tavoitteena oli selvittää tullivastuiden jakautuminen toimijoiden välillä kontin eri kulkuvaiheissa sekä kartoittaa mahdolliset ongelmakohdat. Aluksi selvitettiin toimintaa nykyisessä muodossa ja transitoliikenteen kehitystä viime vuosina Suomessa sekä Trans-Siperian radan merkitystä transitoliikenteelle. Työssä tarkasteltiin tullilainsäädäntöä tullittomille tavarankäsittelyalueille ja sentoteuttamista Mustolan logistiikkakeskuksen vapaa-alueella. Tullilainsäädännöiija nykyisen vapaa-alueen toiminnan pohjalta tutkittiin eri vaihtoehtoja, joita tullittomat tavarankäsittelyalueet tarjoavat. Toimintaa vapaa-alueella tarkasteltiin turvallisuuden ja palvelun tehokkuuden varmistamiseksi. Tullivastuut ja velvollisuudet vapaa-alue toiminnassa ovat erittäin yksiselitteiset tullilainsäädännön perusteella. Toiminnassa ei havaittu puutteita tullivarastoinnista aiheutuvien vastuiden ja velvollisuuksien täyttämisessä. Vapaa-alueen toiminnassa tiedon kulku ja sen reaaliaikaisuus ovat turvallisuuden kannalta erittäin tärkeitä.

Tutkimuksen selvitettiin miten skenaarioanalyysia voidaan käyttää uuden teknologian tutkimisessa. Työssä havaittiin, että skenaarioanalyysin soveltuvuuteen vaikuttaa eniten teknologisen muutoksen taso ja saatavilla olevan tiedon luonne. Skenaariomenetelmä soveltuu hyvin uusien teknologioiden tutkimukseen erityisesti radikaalien innovaatioiden kohdalla. Syynä tähän on niihin liittyvä suuri epävarmuus, kompleksisuus ja vallitsevan paradigman muuttuminen, joiden takia useat muut tulevaisuuden tutkimuksen menetelmät eivät ole tilanteessa käyttökelpoisia. Työn empiirisessä osiossa tutkittiin hilaverkkoteknologian tulevaisuutta skenaarioanalyysin avulla. Hilaverkot nähtiin mahdollisena disruptiivisena teknologiana, joka radikaalina innovaationa saattaa muuttaa tietokonelaskennan nykyisestä tuotepohjaisesta laskentakapasiteetin ostamisesta palvelupohjaiseksi. Tällä olisi suuri vaikutus koko nykyiseen ICT-toimialaan erityisesti tarvelaskennan hyödyntämisen ansiosta. Tutkimus tarkasteli kehitystä vuoteen 2010 asti. Teorian ja olemassa olevan tiedon perusteella muodostettiin vahvaan asiantuntijatietouteen nojautuen neljä mahdollista ympäristöskenaariota hilaverkoille. Skenaarioista huomattiin, että teknologian kaupallinen menestys on vielä monen haasteen takana. Erityisesti luottamus ja lisäarvon synnyttäminen nousivat tärkeimmiksi hilaverkkojen tulevaisuutta ohjaaviksi tekijöiksi.

Tutkielmassa tarkasteltiin muodostuvan RosettaNet-palvelun toteuttamiseen tarvittavia osaamisia ja valittiin osaamisien perusteella parhaat mahdolliset partnerit. Aluksi selvitettiin verkottuvan liiketoiminnan periaatteita sekä verkostoitumisen vaikutusta yritysten nykyiseen toimintaympäristöön. Verkostoista siirryttiin arvoverkostoihin sekä niiden sisälle muodostuvien arvontuotantojärjestelmien toimintaan, joiden pohjalta luotiin RosettaNet-palvelun ympärille muodostuva arvoverkosto ja havaittiin sen sisältävän useita erillisiä arvontuotantojärjestelmiä. Arvontuotantojärjestelmien ja empiirisen kokemuksen pohjalta hahmotettiin palveluun tarvittavat osaamiset, joita olivat teknologia-alustaosaaminen, myynti ja konsultointiosaaminen, ratkaisusuunnitteluja integraatio-osaaminen. Näiden osaamisten perusteella kartoitettiin kaikki mahdolliset partnerit, joiden kanssa tuleva palvelu voitaisiin toteuttaa. Tällöin pääkriteereinä olivat partnerin osaaminen ja sopivuus palveluntarjoajan nykyiseen toimintaympäristöön. Alustavien tutkimuskierrosten jälkeen jäljelle jääneille partneriehdokkaille suoritettiin teemahaastattelut ja yritysten taustojen selvitys. Näiden tutkimusten perusteella yritysten osaamiset ja soveltuvuudet arvioitiin ja tehtiin ehdotus siitä, kuinka Palveluntarjoajan tulisi partneroitua RosettaNet-palvelun osalta. Tutkielmassa muodostettu arvoverkosto ja sen perusteella tehty partnerikartoitus on tehty Palveluntarjoajan tarpeiden pohjalta, eikä se sellaisenaan sovellu käytettäväksi yleisenä toimintamallina johtuen jokaiselle yritykselle ominaisesta toimintaympäristöstä ja tarpeista.
