Purpose: The aim of this cross-over study was to investigate the changes in corneal thickness, anterior and posterior corneal topography, corneal refractive power and ocular wavefront aberrations, following the short term use of rigid contact lenses. Method: Fourteen participants wore 4 different types of contact lenses (RGP lenses of 9.5 mm and 10.5 mm diameter, and for comparison a PMMA lens of 9.5 mm diameter and a soft silicone hydrogel lens) on 4 different days for a period of 8 h on each day. Measures were collected before and after contact lens wear and additionally on a baseline day. Results: Anterior corneal curvature generally showed a flattening with both of the RGP lenses and a steepening with the PMMA lens. A significant negative correlation was found between the change in corneal swelling and central and peripheral posterior corneal curvature (all p ≤ 0.001). RGP contact lenses caused a significant decrease in corneal refractive power (hyperopic shift) of approximately 0.5 D. The PMMA contact lenses caused the greatest corneal swelling in both the central (27.92 ± 15.49 μm, p < 0.001) and peripheral (17.78 ± 12.11 μm, p = 0.001) corneal regions, a significant flattening of the posterior cornea and an increase in ocular aberrations (all p ≤ 0.05). Conclusion: The corneal swelling associated with RGP lenses was relatively minor, but there was slight central corneal flattening and a clinically significant hyperopic change in corneal refractive power after the first day of lens wear. The PMMA contact lenses resulted in significant corneal swelling and reduced optical performance of the cornea.

Metal and semiconductor nanowires (NWs) have been widely employed as the building blocks of the nanoelectromechanical systems, which usually acted a resonant beam. Recent researches reported that nanowires are often polycrystalline, which contains grain boundaries (GBs) that transect the whole nanowire into a bamboo like structure. Based on the larger-scale molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, a comprehensive investigation of the influence from grain boundaries on the vibrational properties of doubly clamped Ag NWs is conducted. It is found that, the presence of grain boundary will result in significant energy dissipation during the resonance of polycrystalline NWs, which leads a great deterioration to the quality factor. Further investigation reveals that the energy dissipation is originated from the plastic deformation of polycrystalline NWs in the form of the nucleation of partial dislocations or the generation of micro stacking faults around the GBs and the micro stacking faults is found to keep almost intact during the whole vibration process. Moreover, it is observed that the closer of the grain boundary getting to the regions with the highest strain state, the more energy dissipation will be resulted from the plastic deformation. In addition, either the increase of the number of grain boundaries or the decrease of the distance between the grain boundary and the highest strain state region is observed to induce a lower first resonance frequency. This work sheds lights on the better understanding of the mechanical properties of polycrystalline NWs, which benefits the increasing utilities of NWs in diverse nano-electronic devices.

It analyzes two examples of policy export: early childhood standards in one of North America’s oldest Indigenous communities and the ongoing development of international standards for university teaching. It examines calls for American education to look to Finland, Canada, and Singapore for models of reform and innovation, focusing on the complex historical, cultural, and political settlements at work in these countries. Trajectory basis Non-Rigid Structure From Motion (NRSFM) currently faces two problems: the limit of reconstructability and the need to tune the basis size for different sequences. This paper provides a novel theoretical bound on 3D reconstruction error, arguing that the existing definition of reconstructability is fundamentally flawed in that it fails to consider system condition. This insight motivates a novel strategy whereby the trajectory's response to a set of high-pass filters is minimised. The new approach eliminates the need to tune the basis size and is more efficient for long sequences. Additionally, the truncated DCT basis is shown to have a dual interpretation as a high-pass filter. The success of trajectory filter reconstruction is demonstrated quantitatively on synthetic projections of real motion capture sequences and qualitatively on real image sequences.

In this paper, we present initial results of an inductive, longitudinal case study of four firms that applied bricolage behaviors during resource constraints in firm emergence. Building on these cases, we discuss and extend existing research in bricolage theories by investigating how bricolage enables or hinders progress within firm creation. We explore the factors that places limits on the use of bricolage effectiveness during emergence. Specifically, in this paper, we discuss the impact of commitment and attention on bricolage effectiveness and how these influences may shape attempts to further progress and continue despite the resource constraints entrepreneurs often face in venture creation processes.

Purpose: We have evaluated the immunosuppressive properties of L-MSC with the view to using these cells in allogeneic cell therapies for corneal disorders. We hypothesized that L-MSC cultures would suppress T-cell activation, in a similar way to those established from human bone marrow (BM-MSC). Methods: MSC cultures were established from the limbal stroma of cadaveric donor eye tissue (up to 1 week postmortem) using either conventional serum-supplemented growth medium or a commercial serum-free medium optimized for bone marrow derived MSC (MesenCult-XF system). The MSC phenotype was examined by flow cytometry according to current and emerging markers for human MSC. Immunosuppressive properties were assessed using a mixed lymphocyte reaction (MLR) assay, whereby the white cell fraction from two immunologically incompatible blood donors are cultured together in direct contact with growth arrested MSC. T-cell activation (proliferation) was measured by uptake of tritiated thymidine. Human L-MSC were tested in parallel with human BM-MSC and rabbit L-MSC. Human and rabbit L-MSC were also tested for their ability to stimulate the growth of limbal epithelial (LE) cells in colony formation assays (for both human as well as rabbit LE cells). Results: L-MSC cultures were >95% negative for CD34, CD45 and HLA-DR and positive for CD73, CD90, CD105 and HLA-ABC. Modest levels (30%) of CD146 expression were observed for L-MSC cultures grown in serum-supplemented growth medium, but not those grown in MesenCult-XF. All MSC cultures derived from both human and rabbit tissue suppressed T-cell activation to varying degrees according to culture technique and species (MesenCult-XF >> serum-fed cultures, rabbit L-MSC >> human L-MSC). All L-MSC stimulated colony formation by LE cells irrespectively of the combination of cell species used. Conclusions: L-MSC display immunosuppressive qualities, in addition to their established non-immunogenic cell surface marker profile, and stimulate LE cell growth in vitro across species boundaries. These results support the potential use of allogeneic or even xenogeneic L-MSC in the treatment of corneal disorders.

This paper explores the interfaces between the transnational politics of labour and the experiences of Vietnamese women garment workers both in Vietnam and as migrants to other countries. As the global industries have come to organise much of the contemporary economic system, so too have they crossed national boundaries in search of cheap labour. At the same time enclaves of migrant disadvantage within the multi-ethnic nation-states of the developed world have also provided workers for the manufacture of clothing. In the case of Australia, these workers are mostly home-based and not in factories. In this paper I explore Vietnamese women's different incorporations into the garment industry in various locations – in Australia, in Vietnam, and in American Samoa. In so doing, I provide an analysis of the links between gender, global power relations and the contradictory space of transnational exchange.

Discipline boundaries of science and technology education are inevitable. Often, such barriers are an obstacle to industry-based learning leading to preventable complexities. Industry-based learning is a complex scenario, rather than conventional learning, leading to the study of liquid learning, which is a timely concept to investigate learning without boundaries. Liquid learning consists of accountability, expectations and driven by outcomes with different learning choices. Liquid learning is a significant phenomenon requiring awareness in the science and technology education. This paper aims to discuss some practical issues when designing industry-based learning without boundaries. A case study approach is reviewed and presented.

A qualitative analysis of the expected dilatation strain field in the vicinity of an array of grain-boundary (GB) dislocations is presented. The analysis provides a basis for the prediction of the critical current densities (jc) across low-angle YBa2Cu3O7- (YBCO) GBs as a function of their energy. The introduction of the GB energy allows the extension of the analysis to high-angle GBs using established models which predict the GB energy as a function of misorientation angle. The results are compared to published data for jc across [001]-tilt YBCO GBs for the full range of misorientations, showing a good fit. Since the GB energy is directly related to the GB structure, the analysis may allow a generalization of the scaling behavior of jc with the GB energy. © 1995 The American Physical Society.

The microstructure of artificial grain boundaries in YBa2Cu3O7-δ (YBCO) thin films grown on [001] tilt YZrO2 (YSZ) bicrystal substrates has been characterized using transmission electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy. Despite a relatively straight morphology of the substrate boundaries, the film boundaries were wavy. The waviness was a result of the combined effects of grooving at the substrate boundaries prior to the film deposition and an island-growth mechanism for YBCO on YSZ substrates. The dihedral angle of the groove walls varied with the misorientation angle and depended on the symmetry of the substrate boundary. The amplitudes of the film boundary waviness compared well with the widths of the grooves. In addition, the grooves induced local bending of the YBCO lattice planes and additional tilt components perpendicular to the c-axis close to the film boundaries. © 1995.

We have studied weak links and dc-SQUIDs made from pulsed laser deposited YBa2Cu3O7-δ thin films on Y-ZrO 2 bicrystal substrates. The transport properties of the weak links were studied as a function of the misorientation angle (θ) between the two halves of the bicrystal and an exponential dependence of the weak link critical current density was observed for angles up to 40°at 77 K. Josephson effects with clear microwave and magnetic field responses were observed. An optimum dc-SQUID performance at 77 K was obtained for θ=32°. At this temperature, we achieved a periodic magnetic field response with a modulation depth of 12 μV.

Atomic scale periodic ripples that extend for several nanometers on the surface of adjacent graphitic grains have been observed for the first time on highly ordered pyrolitic graphite by UHV-STM. The ripples emanate from a grain boundary, and are explained in terms of a mechanical deformation due to the elastic strain accumulated along the GB, which is relieved out-of-plane in the topmost graphene layer. We present a molecular dynamics model that accounts for the formation of similar ripples as result of the lattice mismatch induced by two different grain orientations.

The literature concerning firm boundaries has focussed extensively on the rationale for different boundary choices and the economic efficiencies that such choices can make. There is also an acknowledged position that a firm’s boundary choices may impact the ability of a firm to maintain and even build new capabilities, though such choices may not be optimal from an economic efficiency perspective. It is in this context that we seek to investigate how firms make this potential trade-off in respect of their boundary choices and how these choices are implemented across a wide range of activities. Using qualitative data from three public sector construction oriented organizations, we observe that neither pure make nor buy decisions assisted significantly in capability building. Dual modes – where firms make and buy the same product or service simultaneously – provided firms with some opportunities to manage this paradox, but the most successful decisions seemed to occur in respect of using intermediate governance modes such as alliances. We also observed that the boundary choice was just one dimension of the capability building process and firms pursuing the same boundary choice decisions often had quite divergent outcomes on the basis of their boundary management and the ability of knowledge to move across firm boundaries.
