A wide range of polyfunctional aryl and heteroaryl zinc reagents were efficiently prepared in THF by using (TMP)(2)Mg center dot 2LiCl (TMP = 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperamidyl) in the presence of ZnCl(2). The possible pathways of this metalation procedure as well as possible reactive intermediates are discussed. This experimental protocol expands the tolerance of functional groups and allows an efficient zincation of sensitive heterocycles such as quinoxaline or pyrazine. The zincated arenes and heteroarenes react with various electrophiles providing the expected products in 60-95 % yield.

The ability to discriminate nestmates from non-nestmates is critical to the maintenance of the integrity of social insect colonies. Guard workers compare the chemical cues of an incoming individual with their internal template to determine whether the entrant belongs to their colony. In contrast to honeybees, Apis mellifera, stingless bees have singly mated queens and, therefore, are expected to have a higher chemical homogeneity in their colonies. We tested whether aggressive behaviour of Frieseomelitta varia guards towards nestmate and non-nestmate foragers reflects chemical similarities and dissimilarities, respectively, of cuticular hydrocarbon profiles. We also introduced individuals of Lestrimelitta limao, an obligatory robber species, to test the ability of guards to react effectively to intruders from other taxa. We verified that foraging nestmates were almost invariably accepted, while heterospecific and conspecific non-nestmates were rejected at relatively high rates. However, non-nestmate individuals with higher chemical profile similarity were likely to be accepted by guards. We conclude that guards compare the chemical cuticular blend of incoming individuals and make acceptance decisions according to the similarity of the compounds between the colonies. A new class of hybrid molecular sieve silica (MSS) membranes is developed and tested against standard and organic templated membranes. The hybrid membrane is synthesized by the standard sol-gel process, integrating a template (methyltriethoxysilane - MTES) and a C6 surfactant (triethylhexylammonium bromide) into the silica film matrix. After hydro treatment under a relative humidity of 96% for 50h, the hybrid membrane shows no changes in its gas separation capabilities or energy of mobility. The structural characteristics and integrity of the hybrid membrane are retained due to a high concentration of organophilic functional groups and alkoxides observed using 29 Si NMR. In contrast, the structural integrity of the membranes prepared with non-templated films deteriorated during the hydro treatment due to a large percentage of silanol groups (Si-OH) which react with water. The hybrid membranes underwent a decrease in the H2/CO2 selectivity of only 1% whereas for the non-templated membrane a 21% decrease was observed. The transport mechanism of the hybrid membranes is activated as permeation increased with temperature. The activation energy for the permeation of H2 is positive while negative for CO2. The H2 permeation obtained was 3x 10 -8 mol.m -2 .s -1 .Pa -1 and permselectivities for H2/CO2 and H2/N2 varied between 1-7 and 31-34, respectively.

Five distinct pathways for the reaction of isoxazol-5(2H)-ones with bases or nucleophiles have been reported, and are detailed herein. That investigated in greatest detail, and of greatest application in heterocyclic synthesis, is that of isoxazolones unsubstituted at C-3, in which the sequentially formed ketenimine, alpha-lactone and ketene may all react with a nucleophile.

This paper presents the unique collection of additional features of Qu-Prolog, a variant of the Al programming language Prolog, and illustrates how they can be used for implementing DAI applications. By this we mean applications comprising communicating information servers, expert systems, or agents, with sophisticated reasoning capabilities and internal concurrency. Such an application exploits the key features of Qu-Prolog: support for the programming of sound non-clausal inference systems, multi-threading, and high level inter-thread message communication between Qu-Prolog query threads anywhere on the internet. The inter-thread communication uses email style symbolic names for threads, allowing easy construction of distributed applications using public names for threads. How threads react to received messages is specified by a disjunction of reaction rules which the thread periodically executes. A communications API allows smooth integration of components written in C, which to Qu-Prolog, look like remote query threads.

The measurement of organic carbon in soils has traditionally used dichromate oxidation procedures including the Wakley and Black and the Heanes methods. The measurement of carbon in soils by high temperature combustion is now widely used providing a rapid automated procedure without the use of toxic chemicals. This procedure however measures total carbon thus requiring some means of correction for soil samples containing carbonate and charcoal forms of carbon. This paper examines the effects of known additions of charcoal to a range of soil types on the results obtained by the Walkley and Black, Heanes and combustion methods. The results show, that while the charcoal carbon does not react under Walkley and Black conditions, some proportion does so with the Heanes method. A comparison of six Australian Soil and Plant Analysis Council reference soil samples by the three methods showed good agreement between the Heanes method, the combustion method and only slightly lower recoveries by the Walkley and Black procedure. Carbonate carbon will cause an overestimation of soil organic carbon by the combustion method thus requiring a separate determination of carbonate carbon to be applied as a correction. This work shows that a suitable acid pre-treatment of alkaline soils in the sample boats followed by a drying step eliminates the carbonate carbon prior to combustion and the need for an additional measurement. The measurement of carbon in soils by high temperature combustion in an oxygen atmosphere has been shown to be a rapid and reliable method capable of producing results in good agreement with one of the established dichromate oxidation procedures.

The modified fatty acids, (Z,Z,Z)-(octadeca-6,9,12-trienyloxy)acetic acid, (Z,Z,Z)-(octadeca-9,12,15-trienyloxy)acetic acid, (all-Z)-(eicosa-5,8,11,14-tetraenyloxy)acetic acid, (all-Z)-(eicosa-5,8,11,14-tetraenylthio)acetic acid, 3-[(all-Z)-(eicosa-5,8,11,14-tetraenylthio)]propionic acid, (all-Z)-(eicosa-5,8,11,14-tetraenylthio)succinic acid, N-[(all-Z)-(eicosa-5,8,11,14-tetraenoyl)]glycine and N-[(all-Z)-(eicosa-5,8,11,14-tetraenoyl)]aspartic acid, all react with soybean 15-lipoxygenase. The products were treated with triphenylphosphine to give alcohols, which were isolated using HPLC. Analysis of the alcohols using negative ion tandem electrospray mass spectrometry, and by comparison with compounds obtained by autoxidation of arachidonic acid, shows that each enzyme catalysed oxidation occurs at the omega -6 position of the substrate. In a similar fashion, it has been found that (Z,Z,Z)-(octadeca-6,9,12-trienyloxy)acetic acid, (Z,Z,Z)-(octadeca-9,12,15-trienyloxy)acetic acid, (all-Z)-(eicosa-5,8,11,14-tetraenylthio)acetic acid and N-[(all-Z)-(eicosa-5,8, 11.14-tetraenylthio)]propionic acid each undergoes regioselective oxidation at the carboxyl end of the polyene moiety on treatment with potato 5-lipoxygenase. Neither (all-Z)-(eicosa-5,8,11,14-tetraenylthio)succinic acid nor N-[(all-Z)-(eicosa-5,8,11,14-tetraenoyl)]aspartic acid reacts in the presence of this enzyme, while N-[(all-Z)-(eicosa-5,8,11,14-tetraenoyl)]glycine affords the C11' oxidation product. The alcohol derived from (Z,Z,Z)-(octadeca-6,9, 12-trienyloxy)acetic acid using the 15-lipoxygenase reacts at the C6' position with the 5-lipoxygenase. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. The salticid spider Cosmophasis bitaeniata preys on the larvae of the green tree ant Oecophylla smaragdina. Gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) reveal that the cuticle of C. bitaeniata mimics the mono- and dimethylalkanes of the cuticle of its prey. Recognition bioassays with extracts of the cuticular hydrocarbons of ants and spiders revealed that foraging major workers did not respond aggressively to the extracts of the spiders or conspecific nestmates, but reacted aggressively to conspecific nonnestmates. Typically, the ants either failed to react (as with control treatments with no extracts) or they reacted nonaggressively as with conspecific nestmates. These data indicate that the qualitative chemical mimicry of ants by C. bitaeniata allows the spiders to avoid detection by major workers of O. smaragdina.

In some insects, the finding of oviposition substrate triggers the uptake into oocytes of yolk proteins that are stored in the fat body during post-embryonic development. The main host of the bean weevil Zabrotes subfasciatus (Coleoptera; Chrysomelidae; Bruchinae; Amblycerini), in which larval resources are the sole source for future egg maturation, is Phaseolus vulgaris. Despite not feeding as adults, females of this species are able to lay eggs after encountering host seeds but it is not known how females react to changes in the availability of bean seeds. In the present study, the behaviour of Z. subfasciatus facing two very different environments for oviposition is investigated, as well as how this influences offspring fitness. The results obtained show that females of Z. subfasciatus react to variations in the availability of seeds belonging to the same host species by adjusting egg size and number. Females on low bean seed density lay larger and fewer eggs than those on high bean seed density, demonstrating a trade-off between these reproductive traits. Moreover, females can adjust egg size to changing levels of host availability during the first 4 days of their oviposition period. Although no difference in offspring weight is found, those from small eggs (low competition environment) result in larger adults. No response to selection on these traits after rearing beetles on the same host for 40 generations is observed. This unresponsiveness may indicate that beetle populations behave according to their reaction norm that already allows rapid adaptation to a varying amount of host-seed availability and better exploitation of the environments of this widespread stored-seed pest.

Aims: To report the conclusion of the Think Thank 8 on Compliance Discussions during the second ICI-RS meeting in 2010. Methods: During a 3-day meeting a group of specialists discussed bladder compliance, what it represents, how it can be measured and if it is clinically relevant. Results: Bladder compliance is the result of a mathematical calculation of the volume required for a unit rise of pressure measured during a cystometric filling. It gives an indication on how the different mechanisms in the bladder wall react on stretching. There is a need of standardization of measurement and suggestions for this are given in the text. Pitfalls are described and how to avoid them. There is a wide range of compliance values in healthy volunteers and groups of patients. Poor compliance needs to be defined better as it can have significant clinical consequences. Prevention and treatment are discussed. Conclusion: If compliance is correctly measured and interpreted, it has importance in urodynamic testing and gives information relevant for clinical management. Neurourol. Urodynam. 30:714-722, 2011. 2-Unsubstituted isoxazol-5(4H)-ones and -5(2N)-ones may be acylated by acid chlorides, anhydrides or carboxylic acids in the presence of carbodiimides, to give O- and N-acylated products, The solvent, the presence of base and the temperature are found to alter the product ratios dramatically, but the substituents present at C-3 have the greatest effect, Aliphatic acid anhydrides and chlorides generally react at nitrogen, but aroyl halides give significant proportions of O-acylated products, Limited success in converting O-aroyl to N-aroyl isoxazolones is reported.

5-Oxodihydroisoxazoles react with thiocarbonyl chlorides to afford N-thioacylisoxazol-5(2H)-ones which lose carbon dioxide under photochemical conditions and undergo intramolecular cyclisation of the iminocarbene to afford thiazoles, However, in some cases loss of carbon dioxide is accompanied by loss of sulfur, giving 1,3-oxazin-6-ones.

Objective: The Traffic Engineering Company of the City of Sao Paulo (Brazil) observed a decrease in productivity, and an increase in sick leave, accidents and psychological distress among their parking inspection agents. To document this situation, qualitative research was undertaken to obtain an in-depth comprehension of work activity. Participants: Workers, managers and health and safety professionals contributed to the documentation of the problem and to the proposal of possible solutions. Methods: Ergonomic work analysis focusing on real work activity, as well as interviews with individual or groups of stakeholders, were conducted. Results: This research revealed that political-economic factors gradually contributed to: 1) an increasing work load; 2) growing fatigue throughout the day, increasing the workers` vulnerability to incidents and accidents and their tendency to react inappropriately to violence experienced on the street; and 3) excessive individual responsibility to manage dangerous situations. Conclusions: Recommendations to ameliorate the situation are proposed. These suggestions are discussed in terms of feasibility given the impact of macro social factors upon micro work activity, and the associated potential expansion of the ergonomist`s role.

The cytochrome P450-dependent covalent binding of radiolabel derived fi om phenytoin (DPH) and its phenol and catechol metabolites, 5-(4'-hydroxyphenyl)-5-phenylhydantoin (HPPH) and 5-(3',4'-dihydroxyphenyl)-5-phenylhydantoin (CAT), was examined in liver microsomes. Radiolabeled HPPH and CAT and unlabeled CAT were obtained from microsomal incubations and isolated by preparative HPLC. NADPH-dependent covalent binding was demonstrated in incubations of human liver microsomes with HPPH. When CAT was used as substrate, covalent adduct formation was independent of NADPH, was enhanced in the presence of systems generating reactive oxygen species, and was diminished under anaerobic conditions or in the presence of cytoprotective reducing agents. Fluorographic analysis showed that radiolabel derived from DPH and HPPH was selectively associated with proteins migrating with approximate relative molecular weights of 57-59 kDa and at the dye front (molecular weights < 23 kDa) on denaturing gels. Lower levels of radiolabel were distributed throughout the molecular weight range. In contrast, little selectivity was seen in covalent adducts formed from CAT. HPPH was shown to be a mechanism-based inactivator of P450, supporting the contention that a cytochrome P450 is one target of covalent binding. These results suggest that covalent binding of radiolabel derived from DPH in rat and human Liver microsomes occurs via initial P450-dependent catechol formation followed by spontaneous oxidation to quinone and semiquinone derivatives that ultimately react with microsomal protein. Targets for covalent binding may include P450s, though the catechol appears to be sufficiently stable to migrate out of the P450 active site to form adducts with other proteins. In conclusion, we have demonstrated that DPH can be bioactivated in human liver to metabolites capable of covalently binding to proteins. The relationship of adduct formation to DPH-induced hypersensitivity reactions remains to be clarified.

Recent advances in computer technology have made it possible to create virtual plants by simulating the details of structural development of individual plants. Software has been developed that processes plant models expressed in a special purpose mini-language based on the Lindenmayer system formalism. These models can be extended from their architectural basis to capture plant physiology by integrating them with crop models, which estimate biomass production as a consequence of environmental inputs. Through this process, virtual plants will gain the ability to react to broad environmental conditions, while crop models will gain a visualisation component. This integration requires the resolution of the fundamentally different time scales underlying the approaches. Architectural models are usually based on physiological time; each time step encompasses the same amount of development in the plant, without regard to the passage of real time. In contrast, physiological models are based in real time; the amount of development in a time step is dependent on environmental conditions during the period. This paper provides a background on the plant modelling language, then describes how widely-used concepts of thermal time can be implemented to resolve these time scale differences.
