Aims: To quantify white matterpathology in progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP). Material: Histological sections of white matter of 8 PSP and 8 control cases \Method: Densities and spatial patterns of vacuolation, glial cell nuclei, and glial inclusions (GI) were measured in 8cortical and subcortical fiber tracts. Results: No GI wereobserved in control fiber tracts. Densities of vacuoles and glial cell nuclei were greater in PSP than in controls. In PSP, density of vacuoles was greatest in the alveus, frontopontine fibers (FPF), and central tegmental tract (CTT), and densities of glial cell nuclei were greater in cortical than subcortical regions. The highest densities of GI were observed in the basal ganglia, FPF, cerebellum, andsuperior frontal gyrus (SFG). Vacuoles, glialcells and GI were distributed randomly, uniformly,in regularly distributed clusters, or in large clusters across fiber tracts. GI wermore frequently distributed in regular clusters than the vacuoles and glial cell nuclei.Vacuoles, glial cell nuclei, and GI were not spatially correlated. Conclusions: The data suggest significant degeneration of white matter in PSP, vacuolation being related to neuronal loss in adjacent gray matterregions,GI the result of abnormal tau released from damaged axons, and gliosis a responseto these changes. © 2013.

The α-synuclein-immunoreactive pathology of dementia associated with Parkinson disease (DPD) comprises Lewy bodies (LB), Lewy neurites (LN), and Lewy grains (LG). The densities of LB, LN, LG together with vacuoles, neurons, abnormally enlarged neurons (EN), and glial cell nuclei were measured in fifteen cases of DPD. Densities of LN and LG were up to 19 and 70 times those of LB, respectively, depending on region. Densities were significantly greater in amygdala, entorhinal cortex (EC), and sectors CA2/CA3 of the hippocampus, whereas middle frontal gyrus, sector CA1, and dentate gyrus were least affected. Low densities of vacuoles and EN were recorded in most regions. There were differences in the numerical density of neurons between regions, but no statistical difference between patients and controls. In the cortex, the density of LB and vacuoles was similar in upper and lower laminae, while the densities of LN and LG were greater in upper cortex. The densities of LB, LN, and LG were positively correlated. Principal components analysis suggested that DPD cases were heterogeneous with pathology primarily affecting either hippocampus or cortex. The data suggest in DPD: (1) ratio of LN and LG to LB varies between regions, (2) low densities of vacuoles and EN are present in most brain regions, (3) degeneration occurs across cortical laminae, upper laminae being particularly affected, (4) LB, LN and LG may represent degeneration of the same neurons, and (5) disease heterogeneity may result from variation in anatomical pathway affected by cell-to-cell transfer of α-synuclein. © 2013 Springer-Verlag Wien.

The hippocampus (HC) and adjacent gyri are implicated in dementia in several neurodegenerative disorders. To compare HC pathology among disorders, densities of ‘signature’ pathological lesions were measured at a standard location in eight brain regions of 12 disorders. Principal components analysis of the data suggested that the disorders could be divided into three groups: (1) Alzheimer’s disease (AD), Down’s syndrome (DS), sporadic Creutzfeldt–Jakob disease, and variant Creutzfeldt–Jakob disease in which either β-amyloid (Aβ) or prion protein deposits were distributed in all sectors of the HC and adjacent gyri, with high densities being recorded in the parahippocampal gyrus and subiculum; (2) Pick’s disease, sporadic frontotemporal lobar degeneration with TDP-43 immunoreactive inclusions, and neuronal intermediate filament inclusion disease in which relatively high densities of neuronal cytoplasmic inclusions were present in the dentate gyrus (DG) granule cells; and (3) Parkinson’s disease dementia, dementia with Lewy bodies, progressive supranuclear palsy, corticobasal degeneration, and multiple system atrophy in which densities of signature lesions were relatively low. Variation in density of signature lesions in DG granule cells and CA1 were the most important sources of neuropathological variation among disorders. Hence, HC and adjacent gyri are differentially affected in dementia reflecting either variation in vulnerability of hippocampal neurons to specific molecular pathologies or in the spread of pathological proteins to the HC. Information regarding the distribution of pathology could ultimately help to explain variations in different cognitive domains, such as memory, observed in various disorders.

The objective of the present study was to compare quantitatively the neuropathology of two subtypes of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD), viz., sporadic CJD (sCJD) and variant CJD (vCJD). The vacuolation (‘spongiform change’), surviving neurons, glial cell nuclei, and deposits of the disease form of prion protein (PrPsc) were quantified in histological sections of the cerebral cortex, hippocampus, and cerebellum in 11 cases of sCJD and 15 cases of vCJD. Three aspects of the quantitative pathology of each histological feature were studied: overall abundance (density or coverage), spatial distribution parallel to the tissue boundary, and laminar distribution across gyri of the cerebral cortex. Overall vacuole density was greater in sCJD than in vCJD in some regions while overall neuronal densities were greater in vCJD. In cerebral cortex, vacuoles and PrPsc deposits were distributed in clusters which exhibited a regular distribution parallel to the pia mater, this type of spatial pattern being more frequent in sCJD than in vCJD. In some cortical gyri there were differences in laminar distribution between subtypes, viz. the vacuolation was more generally distributed across cortical laminae in sCJD, neuronal loss was often greater in upper laminae in vCJD but in lower laminae in sCJD, and PrPsc deposits were more frequently distributed in upper laminae in vCJD but in lower laminae in sCJD. A significant gliosis affected lower cortical laminae in both sCJD and vCJD. Hence, there were differences in degeneration of cerebral cortex, hippocampus, and cerebellum in sCJD and vCJD, which may reflect variations in disease aetiology and propagation of PrPsc through the brain.

AIMS: To quantify tau pathology of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) and investigate influence of dot-like lesions (DL), brain region, co-morbidity, and sporting career length. METHODS: Densities of neurofibrillary tangles (NFT), astrocytic tangles (AT), DL, oligodendroglial inclusions (GI), neuropil threads (NT), vacuoles, neurons, and enlarged neurons (EN) were measured in tau-immunoreactive sections of upper cortical laminae of frontal and temporal lobe, hippocampus (HC), amygdala, and substantia nigra (SN) of eleven cases of CTE. RESULTS: DL were a consistent finding in CTE. Densities of NFT, NT and DL were greatest in sectors CA1 and CA2 of the HC. Densities of AT were lower than NFT, small numbers of GI were recorded in temporal lobe, and low densities of vacuoles and EN were consistently present. β-amyloid containing neuritic plaques (NP) also occurred at low density. Densities of NFT, NT, DL, and AT were greater in sulci than gyri while vacuole density was greater in gyri. Principal components analysis (PCA) suggested that sporting career length and densities of NFT in entorhinal cortex, NT in CA2 and SN, and vacuolation in the DG were significant sources of variation among cases. CONCLUSION: DL are frequent in CTE suggesting affinity with argyrophilic grain disease (AGD) and Parkinson's disease dementia (PD-Dem). Densities of AT in all regions and NT/DL in sectors CA2/4 were consistent features of CTE. The eleven cases are neuropathologically heterogeneous which may result from genetic diversity, and variation in anatomical pathways subjected to trauma. This article is protected by copyright. In this MA thesis, Finnish learners of English were studied in order to examine the relationship between second language vocabulary size, vocabulary depth, and reading comprehension. In addition, given the well-established connection between vocabulary size and reading comprehension, the second aim of the study was to see whether assessing vocabulary depth could add another dimension in predicting and explaining reading comprehension proficiency. Two groups were studied: the first group consisted of 39 Finnish upper secondary school students (the TOKA group) whereas the second group consisted of 19 university students of English at the University of Turku (the YLI group). Thus, comparisons were made between the results of a less advanced and a very advanced group of English learners, which was the third aim of the study. The participants in both groups filled in a background information form and took three tests: a multiple-choice reading comprehension test, a multiple-choice vocabulary size test, and a test designed to elicit information on learners’ depth of vocabulary knowledge of certain English words. The data were analysed using statistical methods. The results of the study show that the scores on the three tests were positively correlated in both study groups as well as in the two groups together. However, the correlations were higher in the TOKA group and in the two groups in total than in the YLI group. When examining the variance in reading comprehension test scores explained by vocabulary size and vocabulary depth, the figures of explained variance were again higher in the TOKA group and in the two groups in total than in the YLI group. When it comes to the results of the YLI group, vocabulary depth did not indeed seem to add any explained variance into the explanation of reading comprehension test scores. Based on the results of the study, it seems that vocabulary size and depth have a less significant role in the reading comprehension skills of more advanced learners of English. When looking at the less advanced TOKA group, on the other hand, vocabulary size and depth seem to be clear indicators of reading proficiency. In addition, the test results of the YLI group were clearly more uniform than those of the TOKA group. The variance in the test results of the TOKA group was large.

The rejection of allotransplantation of epigastric microsurgical flaps and the effect of immunosuppression have been studied in 58 rats. Three sets of experiments were planned: (1) Wistar Furth isogenic donors and receptors (control set); (2) Brown Norway donors and Wistar Furth receptors (rejection set); and (3) Brown Norway donors and Wistar Furth immunosuppressed receptors (cyclosporin A set). Cyclosporin A (10 mg/kg/d) treated rats had a transplantation survival rate of up to 30 days: 83.3% among isogenic animals and 60% among allogeneic. There was 100% rejection by the 9th day after the transplantation in allogeneic non-immunosuppressed rats. Biopsies embedded with historesin were taken from the flap and normal contralateral skin (used as control) on the 3rd, 7th, 15th, and 30th days after the surgery. A quantitative study of infiltrating lymphocytes in the flaps, with and without cyclosporin A, was done by evaluating the local inflammatory infiltrate. A significant increase in the number of lymphocytes among the rejection and immunosuppressed groups was seen, as compared to the isogenic set. Local lymphocytosis in allogeneic non-immunosuppressed transplantations reached its highest level on the 3rd day after surgery, before gross findings of rejection, which could only be seen by naked eye on the 5th or 6th day. Therefore, we conclude that cyclosporin A is effective in preserving allogenic transplantation in rats. Biopsies of transplanted areas may contribute to earlier diagnosis of the need for immunosuppressive therapy.

Context: Game development has become increasingly important in the software industry, but this importance has not affected the way software engineering approaches and methodologies manage the differences they have with game development. Similarly, software engineering does not fully support sustainability practices, causing this element to often not be considered or even known as a requirement for a development lifecycle. Goal: The aim of this thesis is to study the mode in which games are developed, and the involved sustainable aspects and the relevant concerns regarding the migration processes. Method: A quantitative study was conducted, gathering 33 answers of game professionals from four continents, from administrative (25%) and technical oriented positions (75%). Results: Three trends were observed: 1) Agile process models are used, 2) major concerns for mobile development and digital marketing, 3) minor concerns for eco-impact elements and certain development phases such as testing and crunch time development. Conclusion: Traditional Software engineering would require a major change on its processes and models to fit with modern agile development, game development approaches and sustainable requirements.

Introduction: Young onset dementia (YOD) affects about 1 in 1500 people aged under 65 years in the UK. It is associated with loss of employment, independence and an increase in psychological distress. This project set out to identify the benefits of a 2 hour week) structured activity programme of gardening for people with YOD. Method: A mixed qualitative quantitative study of therapeutic gardening for people with YOD, measuring outcomes for both participants with YOD and their carers. 12 participants were recruited from a county wide older adults mental health service, based on onset of dementia being before 65 years of age(range 43-65 years). 2 dropped out and 1 died during the project. Measures included the Mini Mental State Examination, Bradford Well Being Profile, Large Allen Cognitive Level Screen and Pool Activity Level. Results: Over a one year period the carers of the people with YOD found that the project had given participants a renewed sense of purpose and increased well-being. while cognitive functioning declined. Conclusions: This study suggests that a meaningful guided activity programme can maintain or improve well-being in the presence of cognitive deterioration.

A quantitative study was made about the effects caused by ionizing irradiation on materials used for dental restoration (amalgams, compound resins and compomere), aiming to alleviate in bearers of head and neck cancer, the possible harmful effects of radiotherapy perceived when the repaired teething is within the radiation field. Research also encourages further studies for new alternative materials to be used in dental repair of patients submitted to radiotherapy for head and neck cancer. Test samples were submitted to a gamma radiation beam coming from a cobalt-therapy source and analyzed according to the X-ray fluorescence technique, comparing the chemical composition of the samples before and after irradiation. Radiation detectors such as an ionization chamber and a Geiger-Muller were used to measure the rate of residual dose. Gamma spectrometry with Nal detectors was also performed on the same samples. Results showed that there was no significant change in the chemical composition and that at post-irradiation, samples did not exhibit radiation emission, that is to say they had not become radioactive.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the electrical behavior pattern of the Rectus abdominis muscle by qualitative and quantitative analysis of the electromyographic signal obtained from its superior, medium and inferior portions during dynamic and static activities. Ten voluntaries (aged X = 17.8 years, SD = 1.6) athletic males were studied without history of muscle skeletal disfunction. For the quantitative analysis the RMS (Root Mean Square) values obtained in the electromyographic signal during the isometric exercises were normalized and expressed in maximum voluntary isometric contraction percentages. For the qualitative analysis of the dynamic activity the electromyographic signal was processed by full-wave rectification, linear envelope and normalization (amplitude and time), so that the resulting curve of the processed signal was submitted to descriptive graphic analysis. The results of the quantitative study show that there is not a statistically significant difference among the portions of the muscle. Qualitative analysis demonstrated two aspects: the presence of a common activation electric pattern in the portions of Rectus abdominis muscle and the absence of significant difference in the inclination angles in the electrical activity curve during the isotonic exercises.

This study aimed to investigate the frequency of symptoms of depression in patients with cancer of the head and neck undergoing radiotherapy treatment, in the initial, middle and final stages of the treatment. This is a prospective exploratory quantitative study of 41 patients with head and neck cancer, undergoing radiotherapy treatment in the Oncology Outpatient Clinic of the Beneficencia Portuguese Hospital of Ribeirao Preto. Data were collected through the Beck Depression Inventory instrument, and analyzed quantitatively by means of the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences. Symptoms of dysphoria were found to increase throughout the treatment, as well as the number of patients with depression. The results show the importance for the healthcare professionals to detect the prevalence and the levels of the symptoms of depression, since these symptoms tend to increase and may lead to consequences such as a lack of adherence to treatment and a decrease in the quality of life of these patients.
