Triggered biodegradable composites made entirely from renewable resources are urgently sought after to improve material recyclability or be able to divert materials from waste streams. Many biobased polymers and natural fibers usually display poor interfacial adhesion when combined in a composite material. Here we propose a way to modify the surfaces of natural fibers by utilizing bacteria (Acetobacter xylinum) to deposit nanosized bacterial cellulose around natural fibers, which enhances their adhesion to renewable polymers. This paper describes the process of modifying large quantities of natural fibers with bacterial cellulose through their use as substrates for bacteria during fermentation. The modified fibers were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, single fiber tensile tests, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and inverse gas chromatography to determine their surface and mechanical properties. The practical adhesion between the modified fibers and the renewable polymers cellulose acetate butyrate and poly(L-lactic acid) was quantified using the single fiber pullout test. © 2008 American Chemical Society.

Diamond/metal composites are very attractive materials for electronics because their excellent thermal properties make them suitable for use as heat sink elements in multifunctional electronic packaging systems. To enlarge the potential applications of these composites, current efforts are mainly focused on investigating different ways to improve the contact between metal and diamond. In the present work, a theoretical study has been carried out to determine the differences between the interfacial thermal conductance of aluminum/diamond and aluminum/graphite interfaces. Additionally, diamond particles were surface modified with oxygen to observe how it affects the quality of the diamond surface. The characterization of the surface of diamonds has been performed using different surface analysis techniques, especially x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and temperature-programmed desorption.

Results of the surface modification of Ti-16Si-4B powder alloy by nitrogen ion implantation are presented, together with the experimental description of the preparation of that powder by high-energy ball milling and hot pressing. The phase structure, chemical composition and morphology of sample surfaces were observed by utilizing X-ray diffractometer (XRD), atomic force microscope (AFM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). A tribological characterization was carried out with a ball-on-disc tribometer and an SEM. Friction coefficient is compared with the one obtained for Ti-6Al-4V alloy and the wear scars characterized by SEM/EDS (energy dispersive spectroscopy). The concentration profile of the detected elements have been investigated using Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) depth profiling. Our results show that a shallow implanted layer of oxygen and nitrogen ions were obtained at the Ti-16Si -4B alloy surface, sufficient to modify slightly its tribological properties.

This study investigated the effect of plasma treatment on changes of surface wettability of wood flooring from two Brazilian tropical species, Hymenaea spp. (rode locus) and Tabebuia spp. (lapacho). Wood flooring samples were plasma treated at low pressure in a helium atmosphere. Energy level was set at 100 W and four glow discharge times (5, 15, 30 and 45 s) were tested. Changes in wettability were investigated by measuring apparent contact angle, droplet volume and spreading contact area. The results showed less susceptibility of lapacho wood to the plasma treatments, while reduction of apparent contact angle in rode locus wood reached up to 76% for longer discharge times. In general, discharge time of 15 s produced the same effect as discharge of 45 s on wettability, which is important for industrial applications. Visual analyses revealed increase of water droplet spreading on lapacho wood surface, even though the variation of spreading contact area was not significant. Plasma treatment is feasible to improve wettability of tropical woods. Nevertheless, these findings should be investigated further due to the intrinsic characteristics of woods from tropical species.

Thin films obtained by plasma polymerization of ethyl ether, methyl or ethyl acetate, acetaldehyde, acetone and 2-propanol were compared. Infrared spectroscopy (FFIR), resistance to chemicals, contact angle measurements, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), optical and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) were carried out. For all films FTIR showed high intensity for polar bonds yet the films are not resistant to polar solvents. Contact angle measurements revealed hydrophilic and organophilic surfaces and XPS pointed out a high proportion of oxygenated bonds. All films showed good step coverage and peeling was significant only with acetone and 2-propanol. All films are adsorbent for organic compounds in a large scale of polarity but acetaldehyde and 2-propanol act like a selective membrane. Also, deposition of these films on hydrophobic substrates leads to island formation. A possible model to explain the results must consider the hydrogen bridge formation on 2-propanol and acetaldehyde films. Ethyl ether, ethyl and methyl acetate showed good characteristics for development of sensor and sample pretreatment using miniaturized devices. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the characteristics of various titanium surfaces modified by cold plasma nitriding in terms of adhesion and proliferation of rat osteoblastlike cells. Materials and Methods: Samples of grade 2 titanium were subjected to three different surface modification processes: polishing, nit riding by plasma direct current, and nitriding by cathodic cage discharge. To evaluate the effect of the surface treatment on the cellular response, the adhesion and proliferation of osteoblastlike cells (MC3T3) were quantified and the results were analyzed by Kruskal-Wallis and Friedman statistical tests. Cellular morphology was observed by scanning electron microscopy. Results: There was more MC3T3 cell attachment on the rougher surfaces produced by cathodic cage discharge compared with polished samples (P < .05). Conclusions: Plasma nitriding improves titanium surface roughness and wettability, leading to osteoblastlike cell adhesion. INT J ORAL MAXILLOFAC IMPLANTS 2011;26:237-244

The aim of this study was to evaluate the development of the osteoblastic phenotype in human alveolar bone-derived cells grown on collagen type I-coated titanium (Ti) surface (Col-Ti) obtained by plasma deposition acrylic acid grafting compared with machined Ti (M-Ti). Osteoblastic cells were cultured until subconfluence and subcultured on Col-Ti and M-Ti for periods of up to 21 days. Cultures grown on Col-Ti and M-Ti exhibited similar cell morphology. Cell adhesion, total protein content, and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity were not affected by Ti surface modification in all evaluated periods. Growth analyses indicated that there were significantly more cells in cultures grown on Col-Ti at day 3. Runt-related transcription factor 2 (Runx2), osteopontin (OPN), and osteoprotegerin (OPG) mRNA expression of cells subcultured on Col-Ti was higher, whereas collagen type I (COL) was lower compared with M-Ti. Ti surface modification neither affected the osteocalcin (OC), ALP and receptor activator of NF-kappa B ligand (RANKL) mRNA expression nor the calcium content extracted from mineralized matrix. These results demonstrated that Col-Ti favours cell growth during the proliferative phase (day 3) and osteoblastic differentiation, as demonstrated by changes in mRNA expression profile during the matrix mineralization phase (day 14), suggesting that this Ti surface modification may affect the processes of bone healing and remodelling. Electrospun poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) fiber mats find applications in an increasing number of areas, such as battery separators, filtration and detection membranes, due to their excellent properties. However, there are limitations due to the hydrophobic nature and low surface energy of PVDF. In this work, oxygen plasma treatment has been applied in order to modify the surface wettability of PVDF fiber mats and superhydrophilic PVDF electrospun membranes have been obtained. Further, plasma treatment does not significantly influences fiber average size (~400 ± 200 nm), morphology, electroactive -phase content (~80-85%) or the degree of crystallinity (Xc of 42 ± 2%), allowing to maintain the excellent physical-chemical characteristics of PVDF. Plasma treatment mainly induces surface chemistry modifications, such as the introduction of oxygen and release of fluorine atoms that significantly changes polymer membrane wettability by a reduction of the contact angle of the polymer fibers and an overall decrease of the surface tension of the membranes.

Building industry is a high volume branch which could provide prominent markets for wood based interior decoration solutions. Competition in interior decoration markets requires versatility in appearance. Versatility in wood appearance and added value could be achieved by printing grain patterns of different species or images directly onto wood. The problem when planning wood printing’s implementing into durable applications is basically how to transfer a high quality image or print sustainably onto wood, which is porous, heterogeneous, dimensionally unstable, non-white and rough. Wood preservation or treating, and modification can provide durability against degradation but also effect to the surface properties of wood which will effect on printability. Optimal adhesion is essential into print quality, as too high ink absorbance can cause spreading and too low ink absorbance cause pale prints. Different printing techniques have different requirements on materials and production. The direct printing on wood means, that intermedias are not used. Printing techniques with flexible printing plates or in fact non-impact techniques provide the best basis for wood printing. Inkjet printing of wood with different mechanical or chemical surface treatments, and wood plastic composite material gave good results that encourage further studies of the subject. Sanding the wood surface anti-parallel to the grain gave the best overall printing quality. Spreading parallel to the grain could not be avoided totally, except in cases where wood was treated hydrophobic so adhesion of the ink was not sufficient. Grain pattern of the underlying wood stays clearly visible in the printed images. Further studies should be made to fine tune the methods that already gave good results. Also effects of moisture content of wood, different inks, and long-term exposure to UV-radiation should be tested.
