Wuthering heights on the screen: exploring the relations between film adaptation and subtitling

This essay aims to confront the literary text Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë with five of its screen adaptations and Portuguese subtitles. Owing to the scope of the study, it will necessarily afford merely a bird‘s eye view of the issues and serve as a starting point for further research. Accordingly, the following questions are used as guidelines: What transformations occur in the process of adapting the original text to the screen? Do subtitles update the film dialogues to the target audience‘s cultural and linguistic context? Are subtitles influenced more by oral speech than by written literary discourse? Shouldn‘t subtitles in fact reflect the poetic function prevalent in screen adaptations of literary texts? Rather than attempt to answer these questions, we focus on the objects as phenomena. Our interdisciplinary undertaking clearly involves a semio-pragmatic stance, at this stage trying to avoid theoretical backdrops that may affect our apprehension of the objects as to their qualities, singularities, and conventional traits, based on Lucia Santaella‘s interpretation of Charles S. Peirce‘s phaneroscopy. From an empirical standpoint, we gather features and describe peculiarities, under the presumption that there are substrata in subtitling that point or should point to the literary source text, albeit through the mediation of a film script and a particular cinematic style. Therefore, we consider how the subtitling process may be influenced by the literary intertext, the idiosyncrasies of a particular film adaptation, as well as the socio-cultural context of the subtitler and target audience. First, we isolate one of the novel‘s most poignant scenes – ‗I am Heathcliff‘ – taking into account its symbolic play and significance in relation to character and plot construction. Secondly, we study American, English, French, and Mexican adaptations of the excerpt into film in terms of intersemiotic transformations. Then we analyze differences between the film dialogues and their Portuguese subtitles.

Presenta los resultados del comportamiento de las redes de arrastre pelágicas tipo japonés 124/1800 y 216/800 utilizada en la toma de muestras en la estimación del stock de recursos pelágicos: anchoveta, sardina, jurel, caballa y samasa durante el crucero hidroacústico 9805-06 a bordo del BIC José Olaya Balandra.

Aspectos biológicos pesqueros de los recursos pelágicos durante el crucero BIC Humboldt y BIC Jose Olaya Balandra 9808-09 entre los palos (Tacna) y Callao

Informe de los resultados de los análisis biológico-pesqueros realizados a las capturas efectuadas por el BIC José Olaya Balandra y la LP IMARPE V, durante el Crucero de Evaluación de Recursos Pelágicos 9808-09, del 20 de agosto al 18 de setiembre 1998, entre la frontera sur y el Callao. Se realizaron 160 lances de comprobación entre ambas embarcaciones. Se obtuvo una captura total de 7.682,6 kg, constituidas por anchoveta (Engraulis ringens) 8,8%; jurel (Trachurus picturatus) 0,1%; caballa (Scomber japonicus) 0,1%. Entre otras especies capturadas tenemos al falso volador (Prionotus stephanophrys) 35,5%; Vinciguerria lucetia 12,1%; samasa (Anchoa nasus) 7,1% y múnida (Pleuroncodes monodon) 10,9%.

The Death of Brock at Queenston Heights, 1812: Imperial Tobacco Company silk card

General Isaac Brock was a British Army officer and administrator who was promoted to Major General. He was responsible for defending Upper Canada against the United States. He died at the Battle of Queenston Heights during the War of 1812. Bartholome Houde and George E. Tuckett (Tuckett was mayor of Hamilton Ontario in 1896) manufactured and sold tobacco before Confederation. In 1841, the company was called B. Houde and Grothe. When Houde retired in 1822 his son in law, Francis Xavier Dussault took over the company. In 1903, the company was called B. Houde and Company Ltee. and it was run by Dussault’s two sons J.A. Dussault and J.E. Dussault. The B. Houde Company had become part of American Tobacco Ltd. which merged with Empire Tobacco Co. Ltd. to form the Imperial Tobacco Company in 1908 in the St. Henri district of Montreal. In 2008, the company celebrated their centennial. Cigarette silks were either enclosed in packets of cigarettes or were redeemable by mail. People would sew these silks together to create quilts or table covers. Some cigarette packages even included instructions for making these items.

Juegos ecológicos con piedras y palos.

Pretende dada la carencia de recursos didácticos la necesidad de experimentar con materiales no convencionales, buscando la plasmación de valores sociales muy en auge como la ecología y cambiar el escenario habitual de las actividades físicas. Todo ello realizando un proceso instructivo más completo, y contribuyendo asimismo con nuevos recursos a fomentar unidades didácticas novedosas, lúdicas y recreativas. Habitualmente las pautas en la didáctica de una actividad lúdica viene marcada por una explicación y un material prediseñado, fabricado generalmente por adultos, frente a ello, los materiales ecológicos brindan la posibilidad de potenciar juegos y juguetes diseñados y construidos por los propios niños, con objetos cercanos y cotidianos, dando nueva vida a lo aparentemente inservible, lo cual considera que añade nuevos valores educativos y posibilidades didácticas, no sólo por el material, sino también por el proceso.

Juegos ecológicos con... palos y varas.

Se trata de un conjunto de unidades didácticas con las que se pretende fomentar la imaginación de los alumnos de Educación Primaria a través de la creación de juegos y juguetes con materiales reciclados, aprovechando así lo que el entorno ofrece, para poder exprimir sus posibilidades. De este modo, se fomenta también la educación ambiental, el ecologismo y la educación cívica, entre los más pequeños. Hacer partícipes a los alumnos de la búsqueda de nuevo material despierta su creatividad e invita a la aportación de nuevas ideas. Muchos de los juegos que se exponen se inspiran en juegos populares y tradicionales, se les ha modificado algunas normas y se pueden realizar en cualquier tipo de instalación deportiva. Este libro es el resultado de varios años de investigación en los que el autor ha desarrollado, junto con sus alumnos, juegos y talleres que han sido experimentados y pulidos por ellos bajo un marco educativo y con la pretensión de dejar posos actitudinales, divertirse y aprender a aprender.

Changes in significant and maximum wave heights in the Norwegian Sea

This paper analyses 10 years of in-situ measurements of significant wave height (Hs) and maximum wave height (Hmax) from the ocean weather ship Polarfront in the Norwegian Sea. The 30-minute Ship-Borne Wave Recorder measurements of Hmax and Hs are shown to be consistent with theoretical wave distributions. The linear regression between Hmax and Hs has a slope of 1.53. Neither Hs nor Hmax show a significant trend in the period 2000–2009. These data are combined with earlier observations. The long-term trend over the period 1980–2009 in annual Hs is 2.72 ± 0.88 cm/year. Mean Hs and Hmax are both correlated with the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) index during winter. The correlation with the NAO index is highest for the more frequently encountered (75th percentile) wave heights. The wave field variability associated with the NAO index is reconstructed using a 500-year NAO index record. Hs and Hmax are found to vary by up to 1.42 m and 3.10 m respectively over the 500-year period. Trends in all 30-year segments of the reconstructed wave field are lower than the trend in the observations during 1980–2009. The NAO index does not change significantly in 21st century projections from CMIP5 climate models under scenario RCP85, and thus no NAO-related changes are expected in the mean and extreme wave fields of the Norwegian Sea.

Syftet är att fastställa gemensamma drag och paralleller, som återfinns i dels keltiska myter/keltiska texter och dels i Wuthering Heights, för att sedan kunna diskutera hur dessa gemensamma drag möter och interagerar med varandra.Resultat: Jag har funnit att det i Wuthering Heights’ ramberättelse återfinns gemensamma drag och paralleller, mellan voyage-genrerna immram & echtrae och Wuthering Heights. I Wuthering Heights ’ kärnberättelse har jag funnit gemensamma drag och paralleller mellan berättelserna hämtade från Leabhar Gabhála Éireann och Wuthering Heights (samtligt mytologiskt material är hämtat ur den mytologiska cykeln). I diskussionen om det innehållsliga mötet, kommer jag fram till att Mr. Lockwood förändrats i och genom sin resa. Jag finner också att Wuthering Heights förändrats i sitt möte med Mr. Lockwood. Lägger man sedan det mytiska filtret uppe på det innehållsliga mötet kan man tolka in ett att kulturellt möte mellan det keltiska/gamla och det europeiskt-kristna/nya som en fruktbar förening, där ingen av parterna är att ringakta. Genom att låta polariteter som dåtid/nutid, hedniskt/kristet och ödemark/civilisation beblanda sig med varandra, både textmässigt strukturellt sker en sammansmältning. Detta är något som ligger helt i linje med den mytologiska cykelns världsuppfattning, där element från vår värld beblandas med element från the Otherworld.
