We develop an approach to the deformation quantization on the real plane with an arbitrary Poisson structure which is based on Weyl symmetrically ordered operator products. By using a polydifferential representation for the deformed coordinates, xj we are able to formulate a simple and effective iterative procedure which allowed us to calculate the fourth-order star product (and may be extended to the fifth order at the expense of tedious but otherwise straightforward calculations). Modulo some cohomology issues which we do not consider here, the method gives an explicit and physics-friendly description of the star products.

The ever-increasing robustness and reliability of flow-simulation methods have consolidated CFD as a major tool in virtually all branches of fluid mechanics. Traditionally, those methods have played a crucial role in the analysis of flow physics. In more recent years, though, the subject has broadened considerably, with the development of optimization and inverse design applications. Since then, the search for efficient ways to evaluate flow-sensitivity gradients has received the attention of numerous researchers. In this scenario, the adjoint method has emerged as, quite possibly, the most powerful tool for the job, which heightens the need for a clear understanding of its conceptual basis. Yet, some of its underlying aspects are still subject to debate in the literature, despite all the research that has been carried out on the method. Such is the case with the adjoint boundary and internal conditions, in particular. The present work aims to shed more light on that topic, with emphasis on the need for an internal shock condition. By following the path of previous authors, the quasi-1D Euler problem is used as a vehicle to explore those concepts. The results clearly indicate that the behavior of the adjoint solution through a shock wave ultimately depends upon the nature of the objective functional.

We consider the non-Markovian Langevin evolution of a dissipative dynamical system in quantum mechanics in the path integral formalism. After discussing the role of the frequency cutoff for the interaction of the system with the heat bath and the kernel and noise correlator that follow from the most common choices, we derive an analytic expansion for the exact non-Markovian dissipation kernel and the corresponding colored noise in the general case that is consistent with the fluctuation-dissipation theorem and incorporates systematically non-local corrections. We illustrate the modifications to results obtained using the traditional (Markovian) Langevin approach in the case of the exponential kernel and analyze the case of the non-Markovian Brownian motion. We present detailed results for the free and the quadratic cases, which can be compared to exact solutions to test the convergence of the method, and discuss potentials of a general nonlinear form. © 2013 Elsevier B.V. This dissertation deals with two specific aspects of a potential hydrogen-based energy economy, namely the problems of energy storage and energy conversion. In order to contribute to the solution of these problems, the structural and dynamical properties of two promising materials for hydrogen storage (lithium imide/amide) and proton conduction (poly[vinyl phosphonic acid]) are modeled on an atomistic scale by means of first principles molecular dynamics simulation methods.rnrnrnIn the case of the hydrogen storage system lithium amide/imide (LiNH_2/Li_2NH), the focus was on the interplay of structural features and nuclear quantum effects. For these calculations, Path-Integral Molecular Dynamics (PIMD) simulations were used. The structures of these materials at room temperature were elucidated; in collaboration with an experimental group, a very good agreement between calculated and experimental solid-state 1H-NMR chemical shifts was observed. Specifically, the structure of Li_2NH features a disordered arrangement of the Li lattice, which was not reported in previous studies. In addition, a persistent precession of the NH bonds was observed in our simulations. We provide evidence that this precession is the consequence of a toroid-shaped effective potential, in which the protons in the material are immersed. This potential is essentially flat along the torus azimuthal angle, which might lead to important quantum delocalization effects of the protons over the torus.rnrnOn the energy conversion side, the dynamics of protons in a proton conducting polymer (poly[vinyl phosphonic acid], PVPA) was studied by means of a steered ab-initio Molecular Dynamics approach applied on a simplified polymer model. The focus was put on understanding the microscopic proton transport mechanism in polymer membranes, and on characterizing the relevance of the local environment. This covers particularly the effect of water molecules, which participate in the hydrogen bonding network in the material. The results indicate that these water molecules are essential for the effectiveness of proton conduction. A water-mediated Grotthuss mechanism is identified as the main contributor to proton conduction, which agrees with the experimentally observed decay on conductivity for the same material in the absence of water molecules.rnrnThe gain in understanding the microscopic processes and structures present in this materials can help the development of new materials with improved properties, thus contributing to the solution of problems in the implementation of fuel cells.

Simulations of supersymmetric field theories on the lattice with (spontaneously) broken supersymmetry suffer from a fermion sign problem related to the vanishing of the Witten index. We propose a novel approach which solves this problem in low dimensions by formulating the path integral on the lattice in terms of fermion loops. For N=2 supersymmetric quantum mechanics the loop formulation becomes particularly simple and in this paper – the first in a series of three – we discuss in detail the reformulation of this model in terms of fermionic and bosonic bonds for various lattice discretisations including one which is Q-exact.

This study is concerned with two phenomena of language alternation in biographic narrations in Yiddish and Low German, based on spoken language data recorded between 1988 and 1995. In both phenomena language alternation serves as an additional communicative tool which can be applied by bilingual speakers to enlarge their set of interactional devices in order to ensure a smoother or more pointed processing of communicative aims. The first phenomenon is a narrative strategy I call Token Cod-eswitching: In a bilingual narrative culminating in a line of reported speech, a single element of L2 indicates the original language of the reconstructed dialogue – a token for a quote. The second phenomenon has to do with directing procedures, carried out by the speaker and aimed at guiding the hearer's attention, which are frequently carried out in L2, supporting the hearer's attention at crucial points in the interaction. Both phenomena are analyzed following a model of narrative discourse as proposed in the framework of Functional Pragmatics. The model allows the adoption of an integral approach to previous findings in code-switching research.

Reliability and dependability modeling can be employed during many stages of analysis of a computing system to gain insights into its critical behaviors. To provide useful results, realistic models of systems are often necessarily large and complex. Numerical analysis of these models presents a formidable challenge because the sizes of their state-space descriptions grow exponentially in proportion to the sizes of the models. On the other hand, simulation of the models requires analysis of many trajectories in order to compute statistically correct solutions. This dissertation presents a novel framework for performing both numerical analysis and simulation. The new numerical approach computes bounds on the solutions of transient measures in large continuous-time Markov chains (CTMCs). It extends existing path-based and uniformization-based methods by identifying sets of paths that are equivalent with respect to a reward measure and related to one another via a simple structural relationship. This relationship makes it possible for the approach to explore multiple paths at the same time,· thus significantly increasing the number of paths that can be explored in a given amount of time. Furthermore, the use of a structured representation for the state space and the direct computation of the desired reward measure (without ever storing the solution vector) allow it to analyze very large models using a very small amount of storage. Often, path-based techniques must compute many paths to obtain tight bounds. In addition to presenting the basic path-based approach, we also present algorithms for computing more paths and tighter bounds quickly. One resulting approach is based on the concept of path composition whereby precomputed subpaths are composed to compute the whole paths efficiently. Another approach is based on selecting important paths (among a set of many paths) for evaluation. Many path-based techniques suffer from having to evaluate many (unimportant) paths. Evaluating the important ones helps to compute tight bounds efficiently and quickly.

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) frequently operate in partially or entirely unknown environments. As the vehicle traverses the environment and detects new obstacles, rapid path replanning is essential to avoid collisions. This thesis presents a new algorithm called Hierarchical D* Lite (HD*), which combines the incremental algorithm D* Lite with a novel hierarchical path planning approach to replan paths sufficiently fast for real-time operation. Unlike current hierarchical planning algorithms, HD* does not require map corrections before planning a new path. Directional cost scale factors, path smoothing, and Catmull-Rom splines are used to ensure the resulting paths are feasible. HD* sacrifices optimality for real-time performance. Its computation time and path quality are dependent on the map size, obstacle density, sensor range, and any restrictions on planning time. For the most complex scenarios tested, HD* found paths within 10% of optimal in under 35 milliseconds.

In this thesis we study the heat kernel, a useful tool to analyze various properties of different quantum field theories. In particular, we focus on the study of the one-loop effective action and the application of worldline path integrals to derive perturbatively the heat kernel coefficients for the Proca theory of massive vector fields. It turns out that the worldline path integral method encounters some difficulties if the differential operator of the heat kernel is of non-minimal kind. More precisely, a direct recasting of the differential operator in terms of worldline path integrals, produces in the classical action a non-perturbative vertex and the path integral cannot be solved. In this work we wish to find ways to circumvent this issue and to give a suggestion to solve similar problems in other contexts.

We analyze the dynamical behavior of a quantum system under the actions of two counteracting baths: the inevitable energy draining reservoir and, in opposition, exciting the system, an engineered Glauber's amplifier. We follow the system dynamics towards equilibrium to map its distinctive behavior arising from the interplay of attenuation and amplification. Such a mapping, with the corresponding parameter regimes, is achieved by calculating the evolution of both the excitation and the Glauber-Sudarshan P function. Techniques to compute the decoherence and the fidelity of quantum states under the action of both counteracting baths, based on the Wigner function rather than the density matrix, are also presented. They enable us to analyze the similarity of the evolved state vector of the system with respect to the original one, for all regimes of parameters. Applications of this attenuation-amplification interplay are discussed.

Using path-integral Monte Carlo calculations, we have calculated ring exchange frequencies in the bcc phase of solid (3)He for densities from melting to the highest stable density. We evaluate 42 different exchange frequencies from two atoms up to eight atoms and find their Gruneisen exponents. Using a fit to these frequencies, we calculate the contribution to the Curie-Weiss temperature, Theta(CW), and upper critical magnetic field, B(c2), for even longer exchanges using a lattice Monte Carlo procedure. We find that contributions from seven-and eight-particle exchanges make a significant contribution to Theta(CW) and B(c2) at melting density. Comparison with experimental data is given.
