Secondary neurodegeneration takes place in the surrounding tissue of spinal cord trauma and modifies substantially the prognosis, considering the small diameter of its transversal axis. We analyzed neuronal and glial responses in rat spinal cord after different degree of contusion promoted by the NYU Impactor. Rats were submitted to vertebrae laminectomy and received moderate or severe contusions. Control animals were sham operated. After 7 and 30 days post surgery, stereological analysis of Nissl staining cellular profiles showed a time progression of the lesion volume after moderate injury, but not after severe injury. The number of neurons was not altered cranial to injury. However, same degree of diminution was seen in the caudal cord 30 days after both severe and moderate injuries. Microdensitometric image analysis demonstrated a microglial reaction in the white matter 30 days after a moderate contusion and showed a widespread astroglial reaction in the white and gray matters 7 days after both severities. Astroglial activation lasted close to lesion and in areas related to Wallerian degeneration. Data showed a more protracted secondary degeneration in rat spinal cord after mild contusion, which offered an opportunity for neuroprotective approaches. Temporal and regional glial responses corroborated to diverse glial cell function in lesioned spinal cord. (C) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The machining of hardened steels has always been a great challenge in metal cutting, particularly for drilling operations. Generally, drilling is the machining process that is most difficult to cool due to the tool`s geometry. The aim of this work is to determine the heat flux and the coefficient of convection in drilling using the inverse heat conduction method. Temperature was assessed during the drilling of hardened AISI H13 steel using the embedded thermocouple technique. Dry machining and two cooling/lubrication systems were used, and thermocouples were fixed at distances very close to the hole`s wall. Tests were replicated for each condition, and were carried out with new and worn drills. An analytical heat conduction model was used to calculate the temperature at tool-workpiece interface and to define the heat flux and the coefficient of convection. In all tests using new and worn out drills, the lowest temperatures and decrease of heat flux were observed using the flooded system, followed by the MQL, considering the dry condition as reference. The decrease of temperature was directly proportional to the amount of lubricant applied and was significant in the MQL system when compared to dry cutting. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. This work presents an analysis of the wavelet-Galerkin method for one-dimensional elastoplastic-damage problems. Time-stepping algorithm for non-linear dynamics is presented. Numerical treatment of the constitutive models is developed by the use of return-mapping algorithm. For spacial discretization we can use wavelet-Galerkin method instead of standard finite element method. This approach allows to locate singularities. The discrete formulation developed can be applied to the simulation of one-dimensional problems for elastic-plastic-damage models. (C) 2007 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

We describe a one-time signature scheme based on the hardness of the syndrome decoding problem, and prove it secure in the random oracle model. Our proposal can be instantiated on general linear error correcting codes, rather than restricted families like alternant codes for which a decoding trapdoor is known to exist. (C) 2010 Elsevier Inc. The multiple-gate field-effect transistor (MuGFET) is a device with a gate folded on different sides of the channel region. They are one of the most promising technological solutions to create high-performance ultra-scaled SOI CMOS. In this work, the behavior of the threshold voltage in double-gate, triple-gate and quadruple-gate SOI transistors with different channel doping concentrations is studied through three-dimensional numerical simulation. The results indicated that for double-gate transistors, one or two threshold voltages can be observed, depending on the channel doping concentration. However, in triple-gate and quadruple-gate it is possible to observe up to four threshold voltages due to the corner effect and the different doping concentration between the top and bottom of the Fin. One-way master-slave (OWMS) chain networks are widely used in clock distribution systems due to their reliability and low cost. As the network nodes are phase-locked loops (PLLs), double-frequency jitter (DFJ) caused by their phase detectors appears as an impairment to the performance of the clock recovering process found in communication systems and instrumentation applications. A nonlinear model for OWMS chain networks with P + 1 order PLLs as slave nodes is presented, considering the DFJ. Since higher order filters are more effective in filtering DFJ, the synchronous state stability conditions for an OWMS chain network with third-order nodes are derived, relating the loop gain and the filter coefficients. By using these conditions, design examples are discussed.

The double-frequency jitter is one of the main problems in clock distribution networks. In previous works, sonic analytical and numerical aspects of this phenomenon were studied and results were obtained for one-way master-slave (OWMS) architectures. Here, an experimental apparatus is implemented, allowing to measure the power of the double-frequency signal and to confirm the theoretical conjectures. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The paper presents a number of numerical simulations of the transverse vibrations of two (or one) imbalanced rotors forced by an electric motor with limited power supply, during the passage through of the two resonance zones (increasing and decreasing input voltages). The predominant presence of the Sommerfeld effect. when the rotational velocity of the motor is captured, in the second resonance frequency is demonstrated. We have shown that the hysteretic jump phenomenon exists in a rotor system with two (or one) disks, and with this, we have shown that a torque is influenced by the dynamical behavior of die rotor [DOI: 10.1115/1.3007979]

In this work we present an analysis of harmonic distortion (HD) in graded-channel (GC) gate-all-a round (GAA) devices operating in saturation region for analog applications. The study has been performed through device characterization and two-dimensional process and device simulations. The overall study has been done on the total and third order HDs. When applied in the saturation regime as an amplifier, the GC outperforms conventional GAA transistors presenting simultaneously higher transconductance, lower drain output conductance and more than 15 dB improved linearity. The influence of channel length reduction on the H D is also analyzed. Although slight linearity degradation is observed in both the conventional and the GC devices when reducing the channel length, the HD presented by the GC transistor is significantly lower than the one showed by conventional device for any Studied channel length. This allows AC input signal amplitude up to 20 times higher than the conventional GAA for a same specified distortion level. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

This paper describes a new method for the preparation of 1,5-bis(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)-1,4-pentadien-3-one 1 and its derivatives 2-5. This set of synthetic compounds exhibited high antitumoral activities regarding in vitro screening against several human tumor cell lines as lung carcinoma NCI-460, melanoma UACC-62, breast MCF-7, colon HT-29, renal 786-O, ovarian OVCAR-03 and ovarian expressing the resistance phenotype for adriamycin NCI-ADR/ RES, prostate PC-3, and leukemia K-562. Compounds were also tested against murine tumor cell line B16F10 melanoma and lymphocytic leukemia L1210 as well as to their effect toward normal macrophages. Specific activity against colon cancer cells HT-29 was observed for all tested compounds and suggests further studies with models of colon cancer. Compounds 1, 2, and 4 showed significant cytotoxic activity with IC(50) values <= 2.3 mu M for all human cancer cell lines. Intraperitoneal acute administration of compound 1 and 2 showed very low toxicity rate. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Described herein is a one-pot synthesis of a,p-epoxy ketones using a palladium-catalyzed epoxidation-oxidation sequence. Functionalized terminal allylic alcohols are treated with m-CPBA Under mild reaction conditions to obtain the alpha,beta-epoxy ketones. The main benefit of this approach is that the epoxidation of the terminal double bond and the oxidation of the secondary alcohol occured in the same reaction under mild reactions and both electron-donating and electron-withdrawing functionalities are tolerated in the reaction sequence. The effects of some composition variables on the development of multiple emulsions by one-step method were evaluated and their morphology characterized. The formulations that remained stable during the period of the test were submitted to centrifugation and thermal stress tests. The stability and the morphology of multiple droplets were affected not only by the type and concentration of the surfactants employed, but also by the water/oil ratios used. The results suggest that the formation of multiple droplets could involve a combination of transitional and catastrophic phase inversions. The results provide improved knowledge about the one-step emulsification method, a simplified process to prepare multiple emulsions when compared to the two-steps method.
