After briefly discussing the question of a distinct mixed valent state and theoretical models for it, the area of greatest theoretical success, namely the mixed valent impurity, is reviewed. Applications to spectroscopy, energetics and Hall effect are then putlined. The independent impurity approximation is inadequate for many properties of the bulk system, which depend on lattice coherence. A recent auxiliary or slave boson approach with a simple mean field limit and fluctuation corrections is summarized. Finally the mixed valent semiconductor is discussed as an outstanding problem.

We study the problem of matching applicants to jobs under one-sided preferences: that is, each applicant ranks a non-empty subset of jobs under an order of preference, possibly involving ties. A matching M is said to be rnore popular than T if the applicants that prefer M to T outnumber those that prefer T to M. A matching is said to be popular if there is no matching more popular than it. Equivalently, a matching M is popular if phi(M,T) >= phi(T, M) for all matchings T, where phi(X, Y) is the number of applicants that prefer X to Y. Previously studied solution concepts based oil the popularity criterion are either not guaranteed to exist for every instance (e.g., popular matchings) or are NP-hard to compute (e.g., least unpopular matchings). This paper addresses this issue by considering mixed matchings. A mixed matching is simply a probability distributions over matchings in the input graph. The function phi that compares two matchings generalizes in a natural manner to mixed matchings by taking expectation. A mixed matching P is popular if phi(P,Q) >= phi(Q,P) for all mixed matchings Q. We show that popular mixed matchings always exist. and we design polynomial time algorithms for finding them. Then we study their efficiency and give tight bounds on the price of anarchy and price of stability of the popular matching problem.

The unsteady mixed convection flow of an incompressible laminar electrically conducting fluid over an impulsively stretched permeable vertical surface in an unbounded quiescent fluid in the presence of a transverse magnetic field has been investigated. At the same time, the surface temperature is suddenly increased from the surrounding fluid temperature or a constant heat flux is suddenly imposed on the surface. The problem is formulated in such a way that for small time it is governed by Rayleigh type of equation and for large time by Crane type of equation. The non-linear coupled parabolic partial differential equations governing the unsteady mixed convection flow under boundary layer approximations have been solved analytically by using the homotopy analysis method as well as numerically by an implicit finite difference scheme. The local skin friction coefficient and the local Nusselt number are found to decrease rapidly with time in a small time interval and they tend to steady-state values for t* >= 5. They also increase with the buoyancy force and suction, but decrease with injection rate. The local skin friction coefficient increases with the magnetic field, but the local Nusselt number decreases. There is a smooth transition from the unsteady state to the steady state. The most difficult operation in flood inundation mapping using optical flood images is to map the ‘wet’ areas where trees and houses are partly covered by water. This can be referred to as a typical problem of the presence of mixed pixels in the images. A number of automatic information extracting image classification algorithms have been developed over the years for flood mapping using optical remote sensing images, with most labelling a pixel as a particular class. However, they often fail to generate reliable flood inundation mapping because of the presence of mixed pixels in the images. To solve this problem, spectral unmixing methods have been developed. In this thesis, methods for selecting endmembers and the method to model the primary classes for unmixing, the two most important issues in spectral unmixing, are investigated. We conduct comparative studies of three typical spectral unmixing algorithms, Partial Constrained Linear Spectral unmixing, Multiple Endmember Selection Mixture Analysis and spectral unmixing using the Extended Support Vector Machine method. They are analysed and assessed by error analysis in flood mapping using MODIS, Landsat and World View-2 images. The Conventional Root Mean Square Error Assessment is applied to obtain errors for estimated fractions of each primary class. Moreover, a newly developed Fuzzy Error Matrix is used to obtain a clear picture of error distributions at the pixel level. This thesis shows that the Extended Support Vector Machine method is able to provide a more reliable estimation of fractional abundances and allows the use of a complete set of training samples to model a defined pure class. Furthermore, it can be applied to analysis of both pure and mixed pixels to provide integrated hard-soft classification results. Our research also identifies and explores a serious drawback in relation to endmember selections in current spectral unmixing methods which apply fixed sets of endmember classes or pure classes for mixture analysis of every pixel in an entire image. However, as it is not accurate to assume that every pixel in an image must contain all endmember classes, these methods usually cause an over-estimation of the fractional abundances in a particular pixel. In this thesis, a subset of adaptive endmembers in every pixel is derived using the proposed methods to form an endmember index matrix. The experimental results show that using the pixel-dependent endmembers in unmixing significantly improves performance.

An analysis is performed to study the flow and heat transfer characteristics for the case of laminar mixed convection along a vertical circular cone. A mixed-convection parameter is introduced in the formulation of the problem such that smooth transition from one convective limit to the other is possible. The transformed conservation equations of the nonsimilar boundary layers are solved by an efficient finite-difference method.

In this thesis the current status and some open problems of noncommutative quantum field theory are reviewed. The introduction aims to put these theories in their proper context as a part of the larger program to model the properties of quantized space-time. Throughout the thesis, special focus is put on the role of noncommutative time and how its nonlocal nature presents us with problems. Applications in scalar field theories as well as in gauge field theories are presented. The infinite nonlocality of space-time introduced by the noncommutative coordinate operators leads to interesting structure and new physics. High energy and low energy scales are mixed, causality and unitarity are threatened and in gauge theory the tools for model building are drastically reduced. As a case study in noncommutative gauge theory, the Dirac quantization condition of magnetic monopoles is examined with the conclusion that, at least in perturbation theory, it cannot be fulfilled in noncommutative space.

The general time dependent source problem has been solved by the method of transforms (Laplace, Lebedev–Kontorovich in succession) and the solution is obtained in the form of an infinite series involving Legendre functions. The solutions in the case of harmonic time dependence and the incident plane wave have been derived from the above solution and are presented in the form of an infinite series. In the case of an incident plane wave, the series has been summed and the final solution involves an improper integral which behaves like a complementary error function for large values of the argument. Finally, the far field evaluation has been shown. The results are compared with those of Sommerfeld's half-plane diffraction problem with unmixed boundary conditions.

The present work is a numerical study of heat transfer characteristics from the bottom tip of a cylinder spinning about a vertical axis in an infinitely saturated porous medium. The problem is axisymmetric. The non-dimensionalized governing equations are solved using the SIMPLER algorithm on a staggered grid. The influence of rotational Reynolds numbers and Darcy numbers on the heat transfer for a Grashof number of 104 and Prandtl number of 7.0 is studied. It is found that for very high Darcy numbers, over a wide range of rotational Reynolds numbers, the heat transfer takes place mainly due to conduction. The convective heat transfer takes place for lower Darcy numbers and for higher rotational Reynolds numbers. Moreover, there is a rapid increase in the overall Nusselt number below a certain Darcy number with increase in the rotational Reynolds numbers. The effect of the Darcy number and the rotational Reynolds number on the heat transfer and fluid flow in the porous medium is depicted in the form of streamline and isotherm plots. The variation of the overall Nusselt number with respect to the Darcy number for various rotational Reynolds numbers is plotted. The variation of the local Nusselt number with respect to the radial coordinate at the heated tip of the vertical cylinder is plotted for various Darcy and rotational Reynolds numbers.

A nonsimilar boundary layer analysis is presented for the problem of mixed convection in power-law type non-Newtonian fluids along horizontal surfaces with variable heat flux distribution. The mixed convection regime is divided into two regions, namely, the forced convection dominated regime and the free convection dominated regime. The two solutions are matched. Numerical results are presented for the details of the velocity and temperature fields. A discussion is provided for the effect of viscosity index on the surface heat transfer rate.

Two mixed boundary value problems associated with two-dimensional Laplace equation, arising in the study of scattering of surface waves in deep water (or interface waves in two superposed fluids) in the linearised set up, by discontinuities in the surface (or interface) boundary conditions, are handled for solution by the aid of the Weiner-Hopf technique applied to a slightly more general differential equation to be solved under general boundary conditions and passing on to the limit in a manner so as to finally give rise to the solutions of the original problems. The first problem involves one discontinuity while the second problem involves two discontinuities. The reflection coefficient is obtained in closed form for the first problem and approximately for the second. The behaviour of the reflection coefficient for both the problems involving deep water against the incident wave number is depicted in a number of figures. It is observed that while the reflection coefficient for the first problem steadily increases with the wave number, that for the second problem exhibits oscillatory behaviour and vanishes at some discrete values of the wave number. Thus, there exist incident wave numbers for which total transmission takes place for the second problem. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Arsenic pollution of water is a major problem faced worldwide. Arsenic is a suspected carcinogen in human beings and is harmful to other living beings. In the present study, a novel adsorbent was used to remove arsenate [As(V)] from synthetic solutions. The adsorbent, which is a mixture of rare earth oxides, was found to adsorb As(V) rapidly and effectively. The effect of various parameters such as contact time, initial concentration, pH, and adsorbent dose on adsorption efficiency was investigated. More than 90% of the adsorption occurred within the first 10 min and the kinetic rate constant was found to be about 3.5 mg min(-1). Adsorption efficiency was found to be dependent on the initial As(V) concentration, and the adsorption behavior followed the Langmuir adsorption model. The optimum pH was found to be 6.5. The presence of other ions such as nitrate, phosphate, sulphate, and silicate decreased the adsorption of As(V) by about 20-30%. The adsorbed As(V) could be desorbed easily by washing the adsorbent with pH 12 solution. This study demonstrates the applicability of naturally occurring rare earth oxides as selective adsorbents for As(V) from solutions.

The mixed alkali metal effect is a long-standing problem in glasses. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) is used by several researchers to study the mixed alkali metal effect, but a detailed analysis of the nearest neighbor environment of the glass former using spin-Hamiltonian parameters was elusive. In this study we have prepared a series of vanadate glasses having general formula (mol %) 40 V2O5-30BaF(2)-(30 - x)LiF-xRbF with x = 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30. Spin-Hamiltonian parameters of V4+ ions were extracted by simulating and fitting to the experimental spectra using EasySpin. From the analysis of these parameters it is observed that the replacement of lithium ions by rubidium ions follows a ``preferential substitution model''. Using this proposed model, we were able to account for the observed variation in the ratio of the g parameter, which goes through a maximum. This reflects an asymmetric to symmetric changeover of. the alkali metal ion environment around the vanadium site. Further, this model also accounts for the variation in oxidation state of vanadium ion, which was confirmed from the variation in signal intensity of EPR spectra.

The occurrence of spurious solutions is a well-known limitation of the standard nodal finite element method when applied to electromagnetic problems. The two commonly used remedies that are used to address this problem are (i) The addition of a penalty term with the penalty factor based on the local dielectric constant, and which reduces to a Helmholtz form on homogeneous domains (regularized formulation); (ii) A formulation based on a vector and a scalar potential. Both these strategies have some shortcomings. The penalty method does not completely get rid of the spurious modes, and both methods are incapable of predicting singular eigenvalues in non-convex domains. Some non-zero spurious eigenvalues are also predicted by these methods on non-convex domains. In this work, we develop mixed finite element formulations which predict the eigenfrequencies (including their multiplicities) accurately, even for nonconvex domains. The main feature of the proposed mixed finite element formulation is that no ad-hoc terms are added to the formulation as in the penalty formulation, and the improvement is achieved purely by an appropriate choice of finite element spaces for the different variables. We show that the formulation works even for inhomogeneous domains where `double noding' is used to enforce the appropriate continuity requirements at an interface. For two-dimensional problems, the shape of the domain can be arbitrary, while for the three-dimensional ones, with our current formulation, only regular domains (which can be nonconvex) can be modeled. Since eigenfrequencies are modeled accurately, these elements also yield accurate results for driven problems. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
