Discarge compilation from The Global River Discharge (RivDIS) Project

The Global River Discharge (RivDIS) data set contains monthly discharge measurements for 1018 stations located throughout the world. The period of record varies widely from station to station, with a mean of 21.5 years. These data were digitized from published UNESCO archives by Charles Voromarty, Balaze Fekete, and B.A. Tucker of the Complex Systems Research Center (CSRC) at the University of New Hampshire. River discharge is typically measured through the use of a rating curve that relates local water level height to discharge. This rating curve is used to estimate discharge from the observed water level. The rating curves are periodically rechecked and recalibrated through on-site measurement of discharge and river stage.

Estudio del crecimiento de gallinas ponedoras de 18 hasta 60 semanas de edad criadas en jaulas enriquecidas sometidas a diferentes intensidades de iluminación. 1. Curva de crecimiento

El objetivo del estudio fue comparar el peso corporal adulto de gallinas ponedoras alojadas en jaulas enriquecidas y sometidas a diferentes intensidades de iluminación de acuerdo con el esquema factorial 2x3: iluminación del pasillo (lateral y central) versus iluminación del piso (bajo, intermedio y alto) , evaluado en el periodo de 18 hasta 60 se manas de edad de acuerdo con el modelo no lineal de Gompertz. Las gallinas fueron alojadas en dos baterías de 3 pisos, con dos filas por piso y cinco jaulas por fila (25 aves/jaula), con un total de 1.500 gallinas. Dichas jaulas cumplen la Directiva CE 199 9/74. Se pesaron 10 gallinas de cada jaula, identificadas con anillas de color diferente, a la edad de 18, 20, 24, 28, 32, 36, 44, 52 y 60 semanas. Para el ajuste de los parámetros B y C del modelo de Gompertz se utilizó el peso medio de las pollitas hasta la 17 a semana edad, pues tuvimos como objetivo mantener dichos parámetros B y C de la curva de Gompertz para todos los tratamientos, ya que el fin del estudio fue evaluar la influencia de la intensidad luminosa en el peso adulto de las gallinas, es decir, el crecimiento después del punto de inflexión de la curva.

Russia was the first state in the world to de facto recognise the regime change in Kyrgyzstan that took place on 7 April 2010. This recognition, along with a previous campaign by the Russian media against the then President Kurmanbek Bakiyev, has given rise to suspicion that the events of April were provoked by Russia. However, it seems no more than reasonable to say that Russia provided some inspiration and lobbying in that direction. Russia offered support to the new Kyrgyz government almost immediately, albeit conditionally. Russia’s relations with Roza Otunbayeva’s government have been changing in nature; they are currently much cooler than they had been immediately after the coup. There are many indications that this change was a reaction to the extension of the lease agreement for the American military base in the Manas airport. At the same time, Moscow remains in contact with the political rivals to the current regime, which suggests that the Kremlin is preparing for different developments, and does not regard the current crisis as having been fully resolved. Despite the interim government’s plea for help, Russia refused to undertake military intervention in southern Kyrgyzstan, which plunged into ethnic unrest in June. This shows that Russia is wary of being dragged into a long-standing and bloody conflict in the region, which could entail considerable expenses and jeopardise Russia’s authority. It should be expected that after the October parliamentary elections in Kyrgyzstan, Russia will return to its plans to establish a second military base in this country (in addition to the Kant base) to reinforce its dominant position in the region. This is the first time that Russia has had a real chance to play a stabilising role in the CIS area. How Russia copes with this challenge may decide its position in post-Soviet Central Asia – and in a wider context, its relations with NATO, the USA and China.

El hombre de los 21 dedos: proposta di traduzione dei primi due capitoli di Muerte de un escritor

La tesi prende in esame Muerte de un escritor, quinto volume della serie El hombre de los 21 dedos, scritto da José Angel Manas e ambientato nella Spagna anni Novanta. La traduzione, limitata ai primi due capitoli del libro, si prefigge di rendere in italiano le diverse e complesse sfaccettature della lingua spagnola parlata utilizzata dall'autore. La traduzione è preceduta da una parte introduttiva, nella quale vengono presentati l'autore e le sue opere ed analizzati il suo stile narrativo e le tematiche trattate. Il linguaggio utilizzato da Manas è quindi oggetto di esame analitico, con il quale si evidenzia la capacità dell'autore di giocare con la lingua e di passare in poche righe da un registro alto a un registro basso, rendendo particolarmente interessante il lavoro del traduttore, che deve cogliere le sfumature del linguaggio e riportarle in italiano senza perdere la forza espressiva del testo originale.

Visoelastic studies on thermoplastic polyurethane nanocomposites using a nano-hardness tester

The viscoelastic behaviour of a range of polyurethane thermoplastic elastomer montmorillonite nanocomposites has been studied using a nanohardness tester. For softer Shore hardness 80A materials, the introduction of the organo-clay increased the creep strain obtained while the nano-indentor was held at constant load. The increase in creep strain was greatest for materials containing an organo-clay modified with a more hydrophilic quaternary alkylammonium surfactant and with higher loadings of the hydrophilic organo-clay. This suggested the effect might be due to a plasticising effect of the excess surfactant. For the harder Shore hardness 55D materials, the addition of the organo-clays produced only a small decrease in the creep strain, probably due to the interconnected hard domains in this material.
