This work shows the application of the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) in the full cost accounting (FCA) within the integrated resource planning (IRP) process. For this purpose, a pioneer case was developed and different energy solutions of supply and demand for a metropolitan airport (Congonhas) were considered [Moreira, E.M., 2005. Modelamento energetico para o desenvolvimento limpo de aeroporto metropolitano baseado na filosofia do PIR-O caso da metropole de Sao Paulo. Dissertacao de mestrado, GEPEA/USP]. These solutions were compared and analyzed utilizing the software solution ""Decision Lens"" that implements the AHP. The final part of this work has a classification of resources that can be considered to be the initial target as energy resources, thus facilitating the restraints of the IRP of the airport and setting parameters aiming at sustainable development. Background: This study used household survey data on the prevalence of child, parent and family variables to establish potential targets for a population-level intervention to strengthen parenting skills in the community. The goals of the intervention include decreasing child conduct problems, increasing parental self-efficacy, use of positive parenting strategies, decreasing coercive parenting and increasing help-seeking, social support and participation in positive parenting programmes. Methods: A total of 4010 parents with a child under the age of 12 years completed a statewide telephone survey on parenting. Results: One in three parents reported that their child had a behavioural or emotional problem in the previous 6 months. Furthermore, 9% of children aged 2–12 years meet criteria for oppositional defiant disorder. Parents who reported their child's behaviour to be difficult were more likely to perceive parenting as a negative experience (i.e. demanding, stressful and depressing). Parents with greatest difficulties were mothers without partners and who had low levels of confidence in their parenting roles. About 20% of parents reported being stressed and 5% reported being depressed in the 2 weeks prior to the survey. Parents with personal adjustment problems had lower levels of parenting confidence and their child was more difficult to manage. Only one in four parents had participated in a parent education programme. Conclusions: Implications for the setting of population-level goals and targets for strengthening parenting skills are discussed.

Transpiration efficiency, W, the ratio of plant carbon produced to water transpired and carbon isotope discrimination of leaf dry matter, Delta(d)' were measured together on 30 lines of the C-4 species, Sorghum bicolor in the glasshouse and on eight lines grown in the field. In the glasshouse, the mean W observed was 4.9 mmol C mol(-1) H2O and the range was 0.8 mmol C mol(-1) H2O The mean Delta(d) was 3.0 parts per thousand and the observed range was 0.4 parts per thousand. In the field, the mean W was lower at 2.8 mmol C mol H2O and the mean Delta(d) was 4.6 parts per thousand. Significant positive correlations between W and Delta(d) were observed for plants grown in the glasshouse and in the field. The observed correlations were consistent with theory, opposite to those for C-4 species, and showed that variation in Delta(d) was an integrated measure of long-term variation in the ratio of intercellular to ambient CO2 partial pressure, p(i)/p(a). Detailed gas exchange measurements of carbon isotope discrimination during CO2 uptake, Delta(A) and p(i)/p(a) were made on leaves of eight S. bicolor lines. The observed relationship between Delta(A) and p(i)/p(a) was linear with a negative slope of 3.7 parts per thousand in Delta(A) for a unit change in p(i)/p(a). The slope of this linear relationship between Delta(A) and p(i)/p(a) in C-4 species is dependent on the leakiness of the CO2 concentrating mechanism of the C pathway, We estimated the leakiness (defined as the fraction of CO2 released in the bundle sheath by C-4 acid decarboxylations, which is lost by leakage) to be 0.2. We conclude that, although variation in Delta(d) observed in the 30 lines of S. bicolor is smaller than that commonly observed in C-4 species, it also reflects variation in transpiration efficiency, W. Among the eight lines examined in detail and in the environments used, there was considerable genotype x environment interaction.

Many lines of evidence indicate that theta rhythm, a prominent neural oscillatory mode found in the mammalian hippocampus, plays a key role in the acquisition, processing, and retrieval of memories. However, a predictive neurophysiological feature of the baseline theta rhythm that correlates with the learning rate across different animals has yet to be identified. Here we show that the mean theta rhythm speed observed during baseline periods of immobility has a strong positive correlation with the rate at which rats learn an operant task. This relationship is observed across rats, during both quiet waking (r=0.82; p<0.01) and paradoxical sleep (r=0.83; p<0.01), suggesting that the basal theta frequency relates to basic neurological processes that are important in the acquisition of operant behavior. Fogo selvagem (FS), the endemic form of pemphigus foliaceus (PF), is characterized by pathogenic anti-desmoglein 1 (DSG1) autoantibodies. To study the etiology of FS, hybridomas that secrete either IgM or IgG (predominantly IgG1 subclass) autoantibodies were generated from the B cells of eight FS patients and one individual 4 years before FS onset, and the H and L chain V genes of anti-DSG1 autoantibodies were analyzed. Multiple lines of evidence suggest that these anti-DSG1 autoantibodies are antigen selected. First, clonally related sets of anti-DSG1 hybridomas characterize the response in individual FS patients. Second, H and L chain V gene use seems to be biased, particularly among IgG hybridomas, and third, most hybridomas are mutants and exhibit a bias in favor of CDR (complementary determining region) amino acid replacement (R) mutations. Strikingly, pre-FS hybridomas also exhibit evidence of antigen selection, including an overlap in V(H) gene use and shared multiple R mutations with anti-DSG1 FS hybridomas, suggesting selection by the same or a similar antigen. We conclude that the anti-DSG1 response in FS is antigen driven and that selection for mutant anti-DSG1 B cells begins well before the onset of disease.

The morphologic appearance and clinical behavior of the human urinary bladder papillary transitional cell carcinoma (TCC) probably result from a complex interaction between carcinogenic insults and host resistance during the patient`s life. While the main recognized risk factors are of environmental origin (e.g. smoking), relatively little information exists about the susceptibility to TCC development. The human leukocyte antigen G (HLA-G) molecule plays an important role in immune response regulation and has been implicated in the inhibition of the cytolytic function of natural killer and cytotoxic T cells. Several lines of evidence indicate that HLA-G polymorphisms influence the expression level and production of different HLA-G isoforms. The aim of this study was to explore a possible influence of the HLA-G polymorphism on the susceptibility to urinary bladder TCC development and progression in smokers and nonsmokers Brazilian subjects. The HLA-G locus was found to be associated with susceptibility to TCC development and progression. The G*0104 allelic group (specially the G*010404 allele) and the G*0103 allele were associated with a tobacco-dependent influence on TCC development. The G*0104 group was associated with progression to high-grade tumors, irrespective of smoking habit, while the G*0103 allele was associated to high-grade tumor only in smoking patients. Our results are an evidence that the HLA-G locus itself, or as part of an extended haplotype encompassing this chromosome region (particularly the HLA-A given the high linkage disequilibrium observed between them in this data series), may be associated with TCC susceptibility and tumor progression, suggesting a tobacco-dependent influence of these polymorphisms.

Aims: Several physiological, pharmacological and behavioral lines of evidence suggest that the hippocampal formation is involved in nociception. The hippocampus is also believed to play an important role in the affective and motivational components of pain perception. Thus, Our aim was to investigate the participation of cholinergic, opioidergic and GABAergic systems of the dorsal hippocampus (DH) in the modulation of nociception in guinea pigs. Main methods: The test used consisted of the application of a peripheral noxious stimulus (electric shock) that provokes the emission of a vocalization response by the animal. Key findings: Our results showed that, in guinea pigs, microinjection of carbachol, morphine and bicuculline into the DH Promoted anti nociception, while muscimol promoted pronociception. These results were verified by a decrease and all increase, respectively, in the vocalization index in the vocalization test. This antinociceptive effect of carbachol (2.7 nmol) was blocked by previous administration of atropine (0.7 nmol) or naloxone (1.3 nmol) into the same site. In addition, the decrease in the vocalization index induced by the microinjection of morphine (2.2 nmol) into the DH was prevented by pretreatment with naloxone (1.3 nmol) or muscimol (0.5 nmol). At doses of 1.0 nmol, muscimol microinjection caused pronociception, while bicuculline promoted antinociception. Significance: These results indicate the involvement of the cholinergic, opioidergic and GABAergic systems of the DH in the modulation of antinociception in guinea pigs. In addition, the present study suggests that cholinergic transmission may activate the release of endorphins/enkephalin from interneurons of the DH, Which Would inhibit GABAergic neurons, resulting in antinociception. Several lines of evidence suggest that angiotensin II (A-II) participates in the postnatal development of the kidney in rats. Many effects of A-II are mediated by mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathways. This study investigated the influence that treatment with losartan during lactation has on MAPKs and on A-II receptor types 1 (AT(1)) and 2 (AT(2)) expression in the renal cortices of the offspring of dams exposed to losartan during lactation. In addition, we evaluated the relationship between such expression and changes in renal function and structure. Rat pups from dams receiving 2% sucrose or losartan diluted in 2% sucrose (40 mg/dl) during lactation were killed 30 days after birth, and the kidneys were removed for histological, immunohistochemical, and Western blot analysis. AT(1) and AT(2) receptors and p-p38, c-Jun N-terminal kinases (p-JNK) and extracellular signal-regulated protein kinases (p-ERK) expression were evaluated using Western blot analysis. The study-group rats presented an increase in AT(2) receptor and MAPK expression. In addition, these rats also presented lower glomerular filtration rate (GFR), greater albuminuria, and changes in renal structure. In conclusion, newborn rats from dams exposed to losartan during lactation presented changes in renal structure and function, which were associated with AT(2) receptor and MAPK expression in the kidneys.

With the exception of the sodium D-lines, recent calculations of line broadening cross sections for several multiplets of sodium by Leininger et al (Leininger T, Gadea F X and Dickinson A 2000 J. Phys. B: At. Mol. Opt. Phys. 33 1805) are in substantial disagreement with cross sections interpolated from the tables of Anstee and O'Mara (Anstee and O'Mara 1995 Mon. Not. R. Astron. Soc. 276 859) and Barklem and O'Mara (Barklem P S and O'Mara B J 1997 Mon. Not. R. Astron. Soc. 290 102). The discrepancy is as large as a factor of 3 for the 3p-4d multiplet. The two theories are tested by using the results of each to synthesize lines in the solar spectrum. It is found that generally the data from the theory of Anstee, Barklem and O'Mara produce the best match to the observed solar spectrum. It is found, using a simple model for reflection of the optical electron by the potential barrier between the two atoms, that the reflection coefficient is too large for avoided crossings with the upper states of subordinate lines to contribute to line broadening, supporting the neglect of avoided ionic crossings by Anstee, Barklem and O'Mara for these lines. The large discrepancies between the two sets of calculations is a result of an approximate treatment of avoided ionic crossings for these lines by Leininger et al (Leininger T, Gadea F X and Dickinson A 2000 J. Phys. B: At. Mol. Opt. Phys. 33 1805).

Theory predicts that in small isolated populations random genetic drift can lead to phenotypic divergence; however this prediction has rarely been tested quantitatively in natural populations. Here we utilize natural repeated island colonization events by members of the avian species complex, Zosterops lateralis, to assess whether or not genetic drift alone is an adequate explanation for the observed patterns of microevolutionary divergence in morphology. Morphological and molecular genetic characteristics of island and mainland populations are compared to test three predictions of drift theory: (1) that the pattern of morphological change is idiosyncratic to each island; (2) that there is concordance between morphological and neutral genetic shifts across island populations; and (3) for populations whose time of colonization is known, that the rate of morphological change is sufficiently slow to be accounted for solely by genetic drift. Our results are not consistent with these predictions. First, the direction of size shifts was consistently towards larger size, suggesting the action of a nonrandom process. Second, patterns of morphological divergence among recently colonized populations showed little concordance with divergence in neutral genetic characters. Third, rate tests of morphological change showed that effective population sizes were not small enough for random processes alone to account for the magnitude of microevolutionary change. Altogether, these three lines of evidence suggest that drift alone is not an adequate explanation of morphological differentiation in recently colonized island Zosterops and therefore we suggest that the observed microevolutionary changes are largely a result of directional natural selection.

Functional capacity evaluation (FCE) is a widely used tool in work rehabilitation, despite the limited examination of the soundness of its measurement properties. This paper outlines the development of a new approach to FCE, the GAPP FCE, and reports on the findings of an expert review of aspects of its content validity and technical adequacy and how it meets established test criteria. Five expert occupational therapists reviewed the materials of the GAPP FCE then completed a questionnaire related to the content validity, technical adequacy and safety, reliability, validity, practicality and utility of the GAPP FCE. The experts gave support to most aspects of these criteria. The main issue identified by the review was related to interpretation and extrapolation of the FCE results for return to work. This and other issues are discussed in relation to recent developments in FCE and plans for future development of the GAPP FCE.

Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor beta (PPARbeta) is a member of the nuclear hormone receptor superfamily and is a ligand activated transcription factor. although the precise genes that it regulates and its physiological and pathophysiological role remain unclear. In view of the association of PPARbeta with colon cancer and increased mRNA levels of PPARbeta in colon tumours we sought in this study to examine the expression of PPARbeta in human breast epithelial cells of tumorigenic (MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231) and non-tumorigenic origin (MCF-10A). Using quantitative RT-PCR we measured PPARbeta mRNA levels in MCF-7. MDA-MB-231 and MCF-10A cells at various stages in culture. After serum-deprivation, MDA-MB-231 and MCF-10A cells had a 4.2- and 3.8-fold statistically greater expression of PPARbeta compared with MCF-7 cells. The tumorigenic cell lines also exhibited a significantly greater level of PPARbeta mRNA after serum deprivation compared with subconfluence whereas such an effect was not observed in non-tumorigenic MCF-10A cells. The expression of PPARbeta was inducible upon exposure to the PPARbeta ligand bezafibrate. Our results suggest that unlike colon cancer. PPARbeta overexpression is not an inherent property of breast cancer cell lines. However, the dynamic changes in PPARbeta mRNA expression and the ability of PPARbeta in the MCF-7 cells to respond to ligand indicates that PPARbeta may play a role in mammary gland carcinogenesis through activation of downstream genes via endogenous fatty acid ligands or exogenous agonists.
