A mathematical model has been developed for the gas carburising (diffusion) process using finite volume method. The computer simulation has been carried out for an industrial gas carburising process. The model's predictions are in good agreement with industrial experimental data and with data collected from the literature. A study of various mass transfer and diffusion coefficients has been carried out in order to suggest which correlations should be used for the gas carburising process. The model has been interfaced in a Windows environment using a graphical user interface. In this way, the model is extremely user friendly. The sensitivity analysis of various parameters such as initial carbon concentration in the specimen, carbon potential of the atmosphere, temperature of the process, etc. has been carried out using the model.

An industrial waste liquor having high sulfate concentrations was subjected to biological treatment using the sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) Desulfovibrio desulfuricans. Toxicity levels of different sulfate, cobalt and nickel concentrations toward growth of the SRB with respect to biological sulfate reduction kinetics was initially established. Optimum sulfate concentration to promote SRB growth amounted to 0.8 - 1 g/L. The strain of D. desulfuricans used in this study initially tolerated up to 4 -5 g/L of sulfate or 50 mg/L of cobalt and nickel, while its tolerance could be further enhanced through adaptation by serial subculturing in the presence of increasing concentrations of sulfate, cobalt and nickel. From the waste liquor, more than 70% of sulfate and 95% of cobalt and nickel could be precipitated as sulfides, using a preadapted strain of D. desulfuricans. Probable mechanisms involving biological sulfide precipitation and metal adsorption onto precipitates and bacterial cells are discussed.

Industrial activities are the major sources of pollution in all environments. Depending on the type of industry, various levels of organic and inorganic pollutants are being continuously discharged into the environment. Although, several kinds of physical, chemical, biological or the combination of methods have been proposed and applied to minimize the impact of industrial effluents, few have proved to be totally effective in terms of removal rates of several contaminants, toxicity reduction or amelioration of physical and chemical properties. Hence, it is imperative to develop new and innovative methodologies for industrial wastewater treatment. In this context nanotechnology arises announcing the offer of new possibilities for the treatment of wastewaters mainly based on the enhanced physical and chemical proprieties of nanomaterials (NMs), which can remarkably increase their adsorption and oxidation potential. Although applications of NMs may bring benefits, their widespread use will also contribute for their introduction into the environment and concerns have been raised about the intentional use of these materials. Further, the same properties that make NMs so appealing can also be responsible for producing ecotoxicological effects. In a first stage, with the objective of selecting NMs for the treatment of organic and inorganic effluents we first assessed the potential toxicity of nanoparticles of nickel oxide (NiO) with two different sizes (100 and 10-20 nm), titanium dioxide (TiO2, < 25 nm) and iron oxide (Fe2O3, ≈ 85x425 nm). The ecotoxicological assessment was performed with a battery of assays using aquatic organisms from different trophic levels. Since TiO2 and Fe2O3 were the NMs that presented lower risks to the aquatic systems, they were selected for the second stage of this work. Thus, the two NMs pre-selected were tested for the treatment of olive mill wastewater (OMW). They were used as catalyst in photodegradation systems (TiO2/UV, Fe2O3/UV, TiO2/H2O2/UV and Fe2O3/H2O2/UV). The treatments with TiO2 or Fe2O3 combined with H2O2 were the most efficient in ameliorating some chemical properties of the effluent. Regarding the toxicity to V. fischeri the highest reduction was recorded for the H2O2/UV system, without NMs. Afterwards a sequential treatment using photocatalytic oxidation with NMs and degradation with white-rot fungi was applied to OMW. This new approach increased the reduction of chemical oxygen demand, phenolic content and ecotoxicity to V. fischeri. However, no reduction in color and aromatic compounds was achieved after 21 days of biological treatment. The photodegradation systems were also applied to treat the kraft pulp mill and mining effluents. For the organic effluent the combination NMs and H2O2 had the best performances in reduction the chemical parameters as well in terms of toxicity reduction. However, for the mine effluent the best (TiO2/UV and Fe2O3/UV) were only able to significantly remove three metals (Zn, Al and Cd). Nonetheless the treatments were able of reducing the toxicity of the effluent. As a final stage, the toxicity of solid wastes formed during wastewater treatment with NMs was assessed with Chironomus riparius larvae, a representative species of the sediment compartment. Certain solid wastes showed the potential to negatively affect C. riparius survival and growth, depending on the type of effluent treated. This work also brings new insights to the use of NMs for the treatment of industrial wastewaters. Although some potential applications have been announced, many evaluations have to be performed before the upscaling of the chemical treatments with NMs.

S. João da Madeira é uma localidade que desde cedo construiu os seus discursos em torno da identidade local sob o epíteto de Cidade do Trabalho. Mais recentemente, desde a última década do século XX, a cidade começou a olhar para a sua dimensão industrial do ponto de vista do seu cunho patrimonial, dentro do quadro emergente das políticas culturais e de identidade, no qual as identidades particulares – como à escala local – se querem afirmar no plano global. Partindo de uma primeira análise dos processos contemporâneos de patrimonialização do industrial no contexto de S. João da Madeira, concretizados pela via dos museus e do turismo, num trabalho de projeto que se apresenta como fase de investigação preliminar de um futuro trabalho de doutoramento, questiona-se como a antropologia poderá pensar o conceito de cultura popular fora dos contextos normalmente a estes atribuídos e como, consequentemente, poderá problematizar as fronteiras daquilo que poderá ser considerado ou não Património Cultural Imaterial (PCI), categoria com a qual a disciplina está historicamente comprometida.

Introducción: La minería subterránea es considerada de alto riesgo afectando la salud de trabajadores expuestos a factores de riesgo y condiciones de trabajo, sin que exista información sobre concentración de material particulado y niveles de riesgo. Objetivo: Determinar la exposición ambiental a polvo de carbón y su relación con las condiciones de higiene y seguridad industrial en los trabajadores que laboran en minas subterráneas de la región de Boyacá. Materiales y métodos: Estudio de corte transversal donde se emplearon cuestionarios para recolectar datos sobre condiciones de trabajo y se realizaron muestreos ambientales de material particulado mediante método de análisis gravimétrico y metodología 0600 de NIOSH. Resultados: Estudio realizado en 19 empresas con 232 trabajadores, con edades entre 20 y 73 años. La concentración promedio de material particulado en los 209 monitoreos realizados fue de 3,4 +3,4mg/m3. El nivel de riesgo alto por exposición a polvo de carbón se encontró en el 70,8% (148) de los monitoreos y el 20,6% (43) en nivel severo, con promedio de 4,9 +4,9 mg/m3. Asociaciones significativas se reportaron entre trabajadores que no usaban protección respiratoria y nivel de riesgo medio y alto (p=0,033); uso mascarilla sin cartucho y nivel de riesgo bajo y medio (p=0,013); el no uso de protección auditiva y niveles medio y alto (p=0,010) y consumo de cigarrillo en el trabajo y niveles medio, alto y severo (p=0,008). Conclusiones: Se determinó vinculación y relación significativa entre los niveles de riesgo alto y severo por exposición a polvo de carbón con concentraciones por encima de niveles permisibles y las condiciones de seguridad industrial de trabajadores

Introducción: La exposición en minas subterráneas a altos niveles de polvo de carbón está relacionada con patologías pulmonares. Objetivo: Determinar la prevalencia de neumoconiosis, medidas de higiene y seguridad industrial y su relación con niveles ambientales de carbón en trabajadores de minas de socavón en Cundinamarca. Materiales y Métodos: Estudio de corte transversal, en 215 trabajadores seleccionados mediante muestreo probabilístico estratificado con asignación proporcional. Se realizaron monitoreos ambientales, radiografías de tórax y encuestas con variables sociodemográficas y laborales. Se emplearon medidas de tendencia central y dispersión y la prueba de independencia ji-cuadrado de Pearson o pruebas exactas, con el fin de establecer las asociaciones. Resultados: El 99,5% de la población perteneció al género masculino, el 36,7% tenía entre 41-50 años, con un promedio de años de trabajo de 21,70 ± 9,99. La prevalencia de neumoconiosis fue de 42,3% y la mediana de la concentración de polvo de carbón bituminoso fue de 2,329670 mg/m3. El índice de riesgo de polvo de carbón presentó diferencias significativas en las categorías de bajo (p=0,0001) y medio (p=0,0186) con la prevalencia de neumoconiosis. El 84,2% reporto no usar mascarilla. No se presentan diferencias entre los niveles de carbón (p=0,194) con la prevalencia de neumoconiosis. Conclusiones: Se encontró una prevalencia de neumoconiosis de 42,3% en Cundinamarca. Se requiere contar con medidas de higiene y seguridad industrial efectivas para controlar el riesgo al que están expuestos los mineros de carbón por la inhalación de polvo de carbón.

Sabemos todos os que aqui nos encontramos que o “choque do futuro” que é o nosso presente levou muita gente a olhar para o passado.De facto, nesta nossa época de revolução electrónica, das auto-estradas da informação e da desindustrialização, muitos se sentem atraídos com curiosidade e, até, com alguma nostalgia, pelo tempo, pelos vestígios, pelos testemunhos das origens da época industrial que marcou a Europa e o mundo inteiro nos últimos séculos.De resto, o impacto aos níveis pessoal e social que a progressiva automação e as outras aplicações da electrónica vêem causando nos nossos dias e o seu reflexo no plano do imaginário colectivo, não hão-de ser menores, nem muito diferentes do que foram séculos atrás, o impacto causado pelo trabalho das primeiras máquinas ou pela passagem das primeiras composições do caminho de ferro a uma velocidade “estonteante”, quando a sociedade se confrontava ainda com uma tecnologia cujo padrão era a medida do homem.

Longe vai o tempo em que a Indústria e a Técnica e, mais exactamente, os seus vestígios estavam excluídos daquilo a que chamamos património cultural. De facto, há muito tempo que, um pouco por todo o mundo e também entre nós, se ouve falar de património técnico, de património industrial e, até, de património mineiro e geológico. Nasceram sociedades, associações, organismos oficiais, criaram-se Arquivos, Centros de Estudo e Museus. Existe hoje por toda a parte, e particularmente na Europa e nas Américas, um público fiel que percorre centenas de quilómetros em demanda de vestígios da civilização industrial, que visita museus e sítios ligados à pré-industrialização, à indústria e, especialmente, à mineração das diversas idades históricas.

Incorporation of radioactive isotopes during the formation of barite mineral scale is a widespread phenomenon occurring within the oil, mining and process industries. In a series of experiments radioactive barite/celestite solid solutions (SSBarite-Celcstite) have been synthesized under controlled conditions by the counter diffusion of Ra-226, Ba2+, Sr24+ and SO42- ions through a porous medium (silica gel), to investigate inhibiting effects in Ra uptake associated with the introduction of a competing ion (Sr2+). From characterization studies, the particle size and the morphology of the crystals appear to be related to the initial [Sr]/[Ba] molar ratio of the starting solution. Typically, systems richer in Sr produce smaller sized crystals and clusters characterized by a lower degree of order. The activity introduced to the system is mainly incorporated in the crystals generated from the barite/celestite solid solution as suggested by the activity profiles of the hydrogel columns analysed by gamma-spectrometry. There is a relationship between the initial [Sr]/[Ba] molar ratio of the starting solution and the activity exhibited by the synthesized crystals. An effective inhibition of the Ra-226 uptake during formation of the crystals (SSBarite-Celestite) was obtained through the introduction of a competing ion (Sr2+): the higher the initial [Sr]/[Ba] molar ratio of the starting solution, the lower the intensity of the activity peak in the crystals. Knowledge-elicitation is a common technique used to produce rules about the operation of a plant from the knowledge that is available from human expertise. Similarly, data-mining is becoming a popular technique to extract rules from the data available from the operation of a plant. In the work reported here knowledge was required to enable the supervisory control of an aluminium hot strip mill by the determination of mill set-points. A method was developed to fuse knowledge-elicitation and data-mining to incorporate the best aspects of each technique, whilst avoiding known problems. Utilisation of the knowledge was through an expert system, which determined schedules of set-points and provided information to human operators. The results show that the method proposed in this paper was effective in producing rules for the on-line control of a complex industrial process.

In recent decades there has been an ethical turn in expectations of how African mineral production and trade should be conducted. Good labour conditions, the absence of conflict and mining’s potential for securing economic, social and environmental benefits are being demanded in the jewellery trade. As a consequence the quality of precious and semi-precious metals and gemstones is now being judged on their ethical credentials in addition to their aesthetic and mineral qualities. Mineral production for industrial manufacture, particularly in the electronics industry, is also coming under scrutiny. Adding value through ethics is closely associated with the use of voluntary (non-state) regulation. This includes standards and associated certification and labels, which have been widely adopted by the minerals and metals sector in efforts to ensure improvements in the social and environmental conditions of production and to enable access to the profitable and expanding global ‘ethical market’. In this chapter, we focus on ethical trading schemes that incorporate voluntary regulation, by using artisanal gold mining in Tanzania and the sale of gold through international fair trade markets as an exemplar to consider the development dynamics that emerge from ethical schemes.
