The Inter-American system for the protection of human rights provides that disputesbetween States and victims of human rights violations or their representatives can beresolved through a friendly settlement. In this arrangement, conducted before the regionalorgans of protection of human rights, the State accepts its international responsibility,commits itself to investigate and judge the responsible and makes commitmentson compensation to the offended, the victims, on his part, renounce to take the caseto the Inter-American Court of Human Rights, and the Inter-American Commissionmonitors the legal consistency of the agreement and holds the role of independentobserver. What are these agreements, what possibilities and limitations provide to theopposing parties and, above all, what kind of reparation offer to victims of humanrights violations are issues to resolve in this article.

It is now possible to directly link the human nervous system to a computer and thence onto the Internet. From an electronic and mental viewpoint this means that the Internet becomes an extension of the human nervous system (and vice versa). Such a connection on a regular or mass basis will have far reaching effects for society. In this article the authors discuss their own practical implant self-experimentation, especially insofar as it relates to extending the human nervous system. Trials involving an intercontinental link up are described. As well as technical aspects of the work, social, moral and ethical issues, as perceived by the authors, are weighed against potential technical gains. The authors also look at technical limitations inherent in the co-evolution of Internet implanted individuals as well as the future distribution of intelligence between human and machine.

View-based and Cartesian representations provide rival accounts of visual navigation in humans, and here we explore possible models for the view-based case. A visual “homing” experiment was undertaken by human participants in immersive virtual reality. The distributions of end-point errors on the ground plane differed significantly in shape and extent depending on visual landmark configuration and relative goal location. A model based on simple visual cues captures important characteristics of these distributions. Augmenting visual features to include 3D elements such as stereo and motion parallax result in a set of models that describe the data accurately, demonstrating the effectiveness of a view-based approach.

It is often assumed that humans generate a 3D reconstruction of the environment, either in egocentric or world-based coordinates, but the steps involved are unknown. Here, we propose two reconstruction-based models, evaluated using data from two tasks in immersive virtual reality. We model the observer’s prediction of landmark location based on standard photogrammetric methods and then combine location predictions to compute likelihood maps of navigation behaviour. In one model, each scene point is treated independently in the reconstruction; in the other, the pertinent variable is the spatial relationship between pairs of points. Participants viewed a simple environment from one location, were transported (virtually) to another part of the scene and were asked to navigate back. Error distributions varied substantially with changes in scene layout; we compared these directly with the likelihood maps to quantify the success of the models. We also measured error distributions when participants manipulated the location of a landmark to match the preceding interval, providing a direct test of the landmark-location stage of the navigation models. Models such as this, which start with scenes and end with a probabilistic prediction of behaviour, are likely to be increasingly useful for understanding 3D vision.

Redox processes associated with controlled generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) by NADPH oxidase (Nox) add an essential level of regulation to signaling pathways underlying physiological processes. We evaluated the ROS generation in the main visual relays of the mammalian brain, namely the superior colliculus (SC) and the dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus (DLG), after ocular enucleation in adult rats. Dihydroethidium (DHE) oxidation revealed increased ROS generation in SC and DLG between 1 and 30 days postlesion. ROS generation was decreased by the Nox inhibitors diphenyleneiodonium chloride (DPI) and apocynin. Real-time PCR results revealed that Nox 2 was upregulated in both retinorecipient structures after deafferentation, whereas Nox 1 and Nox 4 were upregulated only in the SC. To evaluate the role of ROS in structural remodeling after the lesions, apocynin was given to enucleated rats and immunohistochemistry was conducted for markers of neuronal remodeling into SC and DLG. Immunohistochemical data showed that ocular enucleation produces an increase of neurofilament and microtubule-associated protein-2 immunostaining in both SC and DLG, which was markedly attenuated by apocynin treatment. Taken together, the findings of the present study suggest a novel role for Nox-induced ROS signaling in mediating neuronal remodeling in visual areas after ocular enucleation. (C) 2010 IBRO. Studies of the effect of ethanol on human visual evoked potentials are rare and usually involve chronic alcoholic patients. The effect of acute ethanol ingestion has seldom been investigated. We have studied the effect of acute alcoholic poisoning on pattern-reversal visual evoked potentials (PR-VEP) and flash light visual evoked potentials (F-VEP) in 20 normal volunteers. We observed different effects with ethanol: statistically significant prolonged latencies of F-VEP after ingestion, and no significant differences in the latencies of the PR-VEP components. We hypothesize a selective ethanol effect on the afferent transmission of rods, mainly dependent on GABA and glutamatergic neurotransmission, influencing F-VEP latencies, and no effect on cone afferent transmission, as alcohol doesn't influence PR-VEP latencies.

Malicious programs (malware) can cause severe damage on computer systems and data. The mechanism that the human immune system uses to detect and protect from organisms that threaten the human body is efficient and can be adapted to detect malware attacks. In this paper we propose a system to perform malware distributed collection, analysis and detection, this last inspired by the human immune system. After collecting malware samples from Internet, they are dynamically analyzed so as to provide execution traces at the operating system level and network flows that are used to create a behavioral model and to generate a detection signature. Those signatures serve as input to a malware detector, acting as the antibodies in the antigen detection process. This allows us to understand the malware attack and aids in the infection removal procedures. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

O objetivo deste estudo foi estimar a entropia conjunta do sistema visual humano no domínio do espaço e no domínio das freqüências espaciais através de funções psicométricas. Estas foram obtidas com testes de discriminação de estímulos com luminância ou cromaticidade moduladas por funções de Gábor. A essência do método consistiu em avaliar a entropia no domínio do espaço, testando-se a capacidade do sujeito em discriminar estímulos que diferiam apenas em extensão espacial, e avaliar a entropia no domínio das freqüências espaciais, testando-se a capacidade do sujeito em discriminar estímulos que diferiam apenas em freqüência espacial. A entropia conjunta foi calculada, então, a partir desses dois valores individuais de entropia. Três condições visuais foram estudadas: acromática, cromática sem correção fina para eqüiluminância e cromática com correção para eqüiluminância através de fotometria com flicker heterocromático. Quatro sujeitos foram testados nas três condições, dois sujeitos adicionais foram testados na condição cromática sem eqüiluminância fina e um sétimo sujeito também fez o teste acromático. Todos os sujeitos foram examinados por oftalmologista e considerados normais do ponto de vista oftálmico, não apresentando relato, sintomas ou sinais de disfunções visuais ou de moléstias potencialmente capazes de afetar o sistema visual. Eles tinham acuidade visual normal ou corrigida de no mínimo 20/30. O trabalho foi aprovado pela Comissão de Ética em Pesquisa do Núcleo de Medicina Tropical da UFPA e obedeceu às recomendações da Declaração de Helsinki. As funções de Gábor usadas para modulação de luminância ou cromaticidade compreenderam redes senoidais unidimensionais horizontais, moduladas na direção vertical, dentro de envelopes gaussianos bidimensionais cuja extensão espacial era medida pelo desvio padrão da gaussiana. Os estímulos foram gerados usando-se uma rotina escrita em Pascal num ambiente Delphi 7 Enterprise. Foi utilizado um microcomputador Dell Precision 390 Workstation e um gerador de estímulos CRS VSG ViSaGe para exibir os estímulos num CRT de 20”, 800 x 600 pixels, 120 Hz, padrão RGB, Mitsubishi Diamond Pro 2070SB. Nos experimentos acromáticos, os estímulos foram gerados pela modulação de luminância de uma cor branca correspondente à cromaticidade CIE1931 (x = 0,270; y = 0,280) ou CIE1976 (u’ = 0,186; v’= 0,433) e tinha luminância média de 44,5 cd/m2. Nos experimentos cromáticos, a luminância média foi mantida em 15 cd/m2 e foram usadas duas series de estímulos verde-vermelhos. Os estímulos de uma série foram formados por duas cromaticidades definidas no eixo M-L do Espaço de Cores DKL (CIE1976: verde, u’=0,131, v’=0,380; vermelho, u’=0,216, v’=0,371). Os estímulos da outra série foram formados por duas cromaticidades definidas ao longo de um eixo horizontal verde-vermelho definido no Espaço de Cores CIE1976 (verde, u’=0,150, v’=0,480; vermelho, u’=0,255, v’=0,480). Os estímulos de referência eram compostos por redes de três freqüências espaciais diferentes (0,4, 2 e 10 ciclos por grau) e envelope gaussiano com desvio padrão de 1 grau. Os estímulos de testes eram compostos por uma entre 19 freqüências espaciais diferentes em torno da freqüência espacial de referência e um entre 21 envelopes gaussianos diferentes com desvio padrão em torno de 1 grau. Na condição acromática, foram estudados quatro níveis de contraste de Michelson: 2%, 5%, 10% e 100%. Nas duas condições cromáticas foi usado o nível mais alto de contraste agregado de cones permitidos pelo gamut do monitor, 17%. O experimento consistiu numa escolha forçada de dois intervalos, cujo procedimento de testagem compreendeu a seguinte seqüência: i) apresentação de um estímulo de referência por 1 s; ii) substituição do estímulo de referência por um fundo eqüiluminante de mesma cromaticidade por 1 s; iii) apresentação do estímulo de teste também por 1 s, diferindo em relação ao estímulo de referência seja em freqüência espacial, seja em extensão espacial, com um estímulo sonoro sinalizando ao sujeito que era necessário responder se o estímulo de teste era igual ou diferente do estímulo de referência; iv) substituição do estímulo de teste pelo fundo. A extensão espacial ou a freqüência espacial do estímulo de teste foi mudada aleatoriamente de tentativa para tentativa usando o método dos estímulos constantes. Numa série de 300 tentativas, a freqüencia espacial foi variada, noutra série também de 300 tentativas, a extensão espacial foi variada, sendo que cada estímulo de teste em cada série foi apresentado pelo menos 10 vezes. A resposta do indivíduo em cada tentativa era guardada como correta ou errada para posterior construção das curvas psicométricas. Os pontos experimentais das funções psicométricas para espaço e freqüência espacial em cada nível de contraste, correspondentes aos percentuais de acertos, foram ajustados com funções gaussianas usando-se o método dos mínimos quadrados. Para cada nível de contraste, as entropias para espaço e freqüência espacial foram estimadas pelos desvios padrões dessas funções gaussianas e a entropia conjunta foi obtida multiplicando-se a raiz quadrada da entropia para espaço pela entropia para freqüência espacial. Os valores de entropia conjunta foram comparados com o mínimo teórico para sistemas lineares, 1/4π ou 0,0796. Para freqüências espaciais baixas e intermediárias, a entropia conjunta atingiu níveis abaixo do mínimo teórico em contrastes altos, sugerindo interações não lineares entre dois ou mais mecanismos visuais. Este fenômeno occorreu em todas as condições (acromática, cromática e cromática eqüiluminante) e foi mais acentuado para a frequência espacial de 0,4 ciclos / grau. Uma possível explicação para este fenômeno é a interação não linear entre as vias visuais retino-genículo-estriadas, tais como as vias K, M e P, na área visual primária ou em níveis mais altos de processamento neural.

We are included in a society where the use of the Internet became very important to our everyday life. The relationships nowadays usually happen through technological devices instead of face to face contact, for instance, Internet forums where people can discuss online. However, the global analysis is a big challenge, due to the large amount of data. This work investigates the use of visual representations to support an exploratory analysis of contents in messages from discussions forums. This analysis considers the thematic and the chronology. The target forums refer to the educational area and the analysis happens manually, i.e. by direct reading message-by-message. The proprieties of perception and cognition of the human visual system allow a person the capacity to conduct high-level tasks in information extraction from a graphical or visual representation of data. Therefore, this work was based on Visual Analytics, an area that aims create techniques that amplify these human abilities. For that reason we used software that creates a visualization of data from a forum. This software allows a forum content analysis. But, during the work, we identified the necessity to create a new tool to clean the data, because the data had a lot of unnecessary information. After cleaning the data we created a new visualization and held an analysis seeking a new knowledge. In the end we compared the new visualization with the manual analysis that had been made. Analyzing the results, it was evident the potential of visualization use, it provides a better correlation between the information, enabling the acquisition of new knowledge that was not identified in the initial analysis, providing a better use of the forum content

Generic object recognition is an important function of the human visual system and everybody finds it highly useful in their everyday life. For an artificial vision system it is a really hard, complex and challenging task because instances of the same object category can generate very different images, depending of different variables such as illumination conditions, the pose of an object, the viewpoint of the camera, partial occlusions, and unrelated background clutter. The purpose of this thesis is to develop a system that is able to classify objects in 2D images based on the context, and identify to which category the object belongs to. Given an image, the system can classify it and decide the correct categorie of the object. Furthermore the objective of this thesis is also to test the performance and the precision of different supervised Machine Learning algorithms in this specific task of object image categorization. Through different experiments the implemented application reveals good categorization performances despite the difficulty of the problem. However this project is open to future improvement; it is possible to implement new algorithms that has not been invented yet or using other techniques to extract features to make the system more reliable. This application can be installed inside an embedded system and after trained (performed outside the system), so it can become able to classify objects in a real-time. The information given from a 3D stereocamera, developed inside the department of Computer Engineering of the University of Bologna, can be used to improve the accuracy of the classification task. The idea is to segment a single object in a scene using the depth given from a stereocamera and in this way make the classification more accurate.

Reward related behaviour is linked to dopaminergic neurotransmission. Our aim was to gain insight into dopaminergic involvement in the human reward system. Combining functional magnetic resonance imaging with dopaminergic depletion by α-methylparatyrosine we measured dopamine-related brain activity in 10 healthy volunteers. In addition to blood-oxygen-level-dependent (BOLD) contrast we assessed the effect of dopaminergic depletion on prolactin response, peripheral markers for dopamine and norepinephrine. In the placebo condition we found increased activation in the left caudate and left cingulate gyrus during anticipation of reward. In the α-methylparatyrosine condition there was no significant brain activation during anticipation of reward or loss. In α-methylparatyrosine, anticipation of reward vs. loss increased activation in the right insula, left frontal, right parietal cortices and right cingulate gyrus. Comparing placebo versus α-methylparatyrosine showed increased activation in the left cingulate gyrus during anticipation of reward and the left medial frontal gyrus during anticipation of loss. α-methylparatyrosine reduced levels of dopamine in urine and homovanillic acid in plasma and increased prolactin. No significant effect of α-methylparatyrosine was found on norepinephrine markers. Our findings implicate distinct patterns of BOLD underlying reward processing following dopamine depletion, suggesting a role of dopaminergic neurotransmission for anticipation of monetary reward.

Since the discovery that endogenous lipid mediators show similar cannabimimetic effects as phytocannabinoids from CANNABIS SATIVA, our knowledge about the endocannabinoid system has rapidly expanded. Today, endocannabinoid action is known to be involved in various diseases, including inflammation and pain. As a consequence, the G-protein coupled cannabinoid receptors, endocannabinoid transport, as well as endocannabinoid metabolizing enzymes represent targets to block or enhance cannabinoid receptor-mediated signalling for therapeutic intervention. Based on the finding that certain endocannabinoid-like fatty acid N-alkylamides from purple coneflower ( ECHINACEA spp.) potently activate CB2 cannabinoid receptors we have focused our interest on plant fatty acid amides (FAAs) and their overall cannabinomodulatory effects. Certain FAAs are also able to partially inhibit the action of fatty acid amide hydrolase (FAAH), which controls the breakdown of endocannabinoids. Intriguingly, plants lack CB receptors and do not synthesize endocannabinoids, but express FAAH homologues capable of metabolizing plant endogenous N-acylethanolamines (NAEs). While the site of action of these NAEs in plants is unknown, endogenous NAEs and arachidonic acid glycerols in animals interact with distinct physiological lipid receptors, including cannabinoid receptors. There is increasing evidence that also plant FAAs other than NAEs can pharmacologically modulate the action of these endogenous lipid signals. The interference of plant FAAs with the animal endocannabinoid system could thus be a fortunate evolutionary cross point with yet unexplored therapeutic potential.
