Objective. To determine if knee alignment measures differ between African Americans and Caucasians without radiographic knee osteoarthritis (rOA). Methods. A single knee was randomly selected from 175 participants in the Johnston County Osteoarthritis Project without rOA in either knee. Anatomic axis, condylar, tibia] plateau, and condylar plateau angles were measured by I radiologist; means were compared and adjusted for age and body mass index (BMI). Results. There were no significant differences in knee alignment measurements between Caucasians and African Americans among men or women. Conclusion. Observed differences in knee rOA occurrence between African Americans and Caucasians are not explained by differences in static knee alignment. Purpose: Children`s postural alignment undergoes many adjustments due to the changes in body proportions during the stages of growth. The objective of this study was to quantitatively characterize and analyze spinal postural standards in 7- and 8-year-old children to verify which of the differences found were correlated to age and sex. Methods: Two hundred thirty public school students (Amparo, Sao Paulo, Brazil) aged 7 to 8 years were divided into groups according to postural alignment, which were further subdivided by sex and age, for comparison. Digital photos of upright Subjects were analyzed to evaluate posture. Lumbar and thoracic curvature, pelvic inclination, head posture, and lateral spine deviation were measured using CorelDraw (Ottawa, Canada) software guidelines and bone landmarks. Descriptive statistics and analysis of variance data analysis were utilized to verify differences among the groups. This was a cross-sectional, descriptive study. Results: Mean values for the variables analyzed were calculated. For lumbar lordosis, 7-year-old boys showed 38.49 degrees +/- 15.32 degrees in comparison to all other groups (42.29 degrees +/- 7.13 degrees). For thoracic kyphosis, the 7-year-old children presented 28.07 degrees +/- 7.73 degrees. and the 8-year-olds 30.32 degrees +/- 7.73 degrees. Pelvic inclination presented a mean value of 15.82 degrees +/- 5.46 degrees and single lateral spine deviation mean value of 3.48 degrees +/- 2.12 degrees. Conclusion: For the sample studied, differences based on sex and age were found for some of the body segments analyzed. The values found in this study may contribute to improved physiotherapeutic treatment when associated with other aspects of the clinical assessment and symptomatology. Introduction: The aim of the present study was to test the accuracy of small-volume cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scanning in the detection of horizontal root fractures and to assess the influence of a metallic post. Methods: Forty teeth were divided into four groups based on the presence of metallic posts and horizontal root fracture. The teeth were examined by small-volume CBCT scanning at 0.2-mm voxel resolution. Three observers analyzed the samples for the presence of a horizontal root fracture. Sensitivity and specificity were calculated. Results: High values for accuracy (73%-88%) were obtained in the groups without a metallic post, and statistically significant differences were found when the group with a metallic post has been observed (55%-70%). Intraobserver agreement also showed statistically significant differences in the groups with a metallic post. Conclusions: Small-volume CBCT scanning showed high accuracy in detecting horizontal root fracture without a metallic post. However, the presence of a metallic post significantly reduced the specificity and sensitivity of this examination. (J Endod 2011;37:1456-1459)

Objective. To investigate the processing induced particle alignment on fracture behavior of four multiphase dental ceramics (one porcelain, two glass-ceramics and a glass-infiltrated-alumina composite). Methods. Disks (empty set12mm x 1.1 mm-thick) and bars (3 mm x 4 mm x 20 mm) of each material were processed according to manufacturer instructions, machined and polished. Fracture toughness (K(IC)) was determined by the indentation strength method using 3-point bending and biaxial flexure fixtures for the fracture of bars and disks, respectively. Microstructural and fractographic analyses were performed with scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. Results. The isotropic microstructure of the porcelain and the leucite-based glass-ceramic resulted in similar fracture toughness values regardless of the specimen geometry. On the other hand, materials containing second-phase particles with high aspect ratio (lithium disilicate glass-ceramic and glass-infiltrated-alumina composite) showed lower fracture toughness for disk specimens compared to bars. For the lithium disilicate glass-ceramic disks, it was demonstrated that the occurrence of particle alignment during the heat-pressing procedure resulted in an unfavorable pattern that created weak microstructural paths during the biaxial test. For the glass-infiltrated-alumina composite, the microstructural analysis showed that the large alumina platelets tended to align their large surfaces perpendicularly to the direction of particle deposition during slip casting of green preforms. Significance. The fracture toughness of dental ceramics with anisotropic microstructure should be determined by means of biaxial testing, since it results in lower values. Introduction: The purpose of this retrospective study was to compare the long-term stability of maxillary incisor alignment in patients treated with and without rapid maxillary expansion (RME). Methods: The sample comprised 48 subjects with Class I and Class II malocclusions, treated without extractions with fixed edgewise appliances, divided into 2 groups according to the treatment protocol: group 1 comprised 25 patients (15 girls, 10 boys) at a mean initial age of 13.53 years (SD, 1.63), who had RME during orthodontic treatment. Group 2 comprised 23 patients (13 girls, 10 boys) at a mean initial age of 13.36 years (SD, 1.81 years), treated with fixed appliances without RME. Maxillary dental cast measurements were obtained at the pretreatment, posttreatment, and long-term posttreatment stages. Variables assessed were the irregularity index and maxillary arch dimensions. Intergroup comparisons were made with independent t tests. Results: Greater transverse increases were found during treatment in the group treated with RME. However, during the long-term posttreatment period, no significant difference was observed in the amount of incisor crowding relapse between the groups. Conclusions: RME did not influence long-term maxillary anterior alignment stability. (Am J Orthod Dentofacial Orthop 2010; 137: 164. e1-164.e6)

Horizontal root fractures are uncommon, mainly occurring on the cervical and middle third of the root of permanent upper incisors. The diagnosis is essentially radiographic and requires different healing patterns, depending on some pre- and postinjury factors. The aim of this article was to report the clinical management and different healing types in three cases of horizontal root fractures on permanent dentition. In case 1, the pulp tissue was vital and no treatment was necessary. In case 2, a root canal treatment of the cervical fragment was necessary and in case 3, pulpal necrosis was verified and an apical surgery was performed.

(E)-N-Hexadecyl-4-[2-(4-octadecyloxynaphthyl) ethenyl] quinolinium bromide, which has a wide-bodied chromophore and terminal n-alkyl groups, adopts a U-shape when spread at the air-water interface but a stretched conformation when compressed to ca. 35 mN m(-1). The high-pressure phase has a narrow stability range prior to collapse but may be extended from 40 to 60 mN m(-1) by co-spreading the dye in a 1 : 1 ratio with docosanoic acid. The mixed Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) film has a monolayer thickness of 4.6 +/- 0.2 nm which decreases to 2.5 +/- 0.1 nm layer(-1) in the bulk, the reduction arising from an interdigitating layer arrangement, both top and bottom. It is the first example of LB-Lego(R) and, in addition, represents the only fully interdigitating structure with non-centrosymmetrically aligned chromophores. They are tilted 38 degrees from the substrate normal. The second-harmonic intensity increases quadratically with the number of layers, i.e. as I-(N)(2 omega) = (I(1)N2)-N-2 omega, with a second-order susceptibility of chi ((2))(zzz) = 30 pm V-1 at 1064 nm for refractive indices of n(omega) = 1.55 and n(2 omega) = 1.73, d = 2.5 nm layer(-1) and phi = 38 degrees. Angle resolved X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS) of these films provide no evidence of the bromide counterion, which suggests that it is replaced by OH 2 or HCO3-, which occur naturally in the aqueous subphase, or C21H43COO- from the co-deposited fatty acid. This probably applies to all cationic dyes deposited by the LB technique.

The relative potential of the pathogenic fungi Beauveria bassiana and Zoophthora radicans for use as autodisseminated biological control agents of the diamondback moth (Plutella xylostella) was compared. The LC50 of B. bassiana conidia to third instar larvae was 499 conidia/mm(2) of leaf surface and individual cadavers of mycosed fourth instar larvae yielded a mean of 67.5 X 10(6) (+/- 7.5 x 10(6)) conidia. All concentrations of B. bassiana tested in inoculation chambers (0.24, 2.4, and 6.2 mug/mm(2)) induced 100% mortality in adult male moths within 7 days. The times to death and sporulation were concentration and exposure duration dependent. A standard procedure for inoculating male moths resulted in > 85% mortality from Z. radicans and > 93% mortality from B. bassiana. Pairing of inoculated males with clean moths of both sexes yielded higher rates of passive transmission of B. bassiana than Z. radicans, but there was no evidence for sexual transmission of either pathogen. Similarly, B. bassiana was more effectively transmitted from inoculated male moths to larvae foraging on whole plants. Single sporulating cadavers producing B. bassiana or Z. radicans conidia placed on plants infested with larvae resulted in a similar rate of transmission for both pathogens. However, an increase of the density of sporulating cadavers from one to three/plant increased Z. radicans transmission (greater than fourfold) but had no effect on B. bassiana transmission. Simultaneous inoculations of larvae with conidia of both fungi reduced the mortality induced by each pathogen, the reduction being most acute for B. bassiana-induced mortality. Inoculation of adults with both fungi showed that, at concentrations required for effective passive transmission to larvae, B. bassiana severely inhibited Z. radicans mycosis in adults. We present a novel maximum-likelihood-based algorithm for estimating the distribution of alignment scores from the scores of unrelated sequences in a database search. Using a new method for measuring the accuracy of p-values, we show that our maximum-likelihood-based algorithm is more accurate than existing regression-based and lookup table methods. We explore a more sophisticated way of modeling and estimating the score distributions (using a two-component mixture model and expectation maximization), but conclude that this does not improve significantly over simply ignoring scores with small E-values during estimation. Finally, we measure the classification accuracy of p-values estimated in different ways and observe that inaccurate p-values can, somewhat paradoxically, lead to higher classification accuracy. We explain this paradox and argue that statistical accuracy, not classification accuracy, should be the primary criterion in comparisons of similarity search methods that return p-values that adjust for target sequence length.

Mixed confined and unconfined groundwater flow occurs in a bounded initially dry aquifer when the hydraulic head at the side boundary suddenly rises above the elevation of the aquifer's top boundary. The flow problem as modelled by the Boussinesq equation is non-trivial because of the involvement of two moving boundaries. The transformed equation (based on a similarity transformation) can, however, be dealt with more easily. Here, we present an approximate analytical solution for this flow problem. The approximate solution is compared with an 'exact' numerical solution and found to be a very accurate description for describing the mixed confined and unconfined flow in the confined aquifer. To examine the dissemination of Shiga-toxigenic Escherichia coli (STEC) within cattle groups, dairy calves on two farms utilizing different calf-rearing practices were exposed to a traceable STEC strain. Test strain dissemination differed significantly between farms, with a higher prevalence being associated with group penning. Pen floors and calf hides may be the main environmental mechanisms of transmission. Dairy calf husbandry represents a control point for reducing on-farm STEC prevalence.

The PFC3D (particle flow code) that models the movement and interaction of particles by the DEM techniques was employed to simulate the particle movement and to calculate the velocity and energy distribution of collision in two types of impact crusher: the Canica vertical shaft crusher and the BJD horizontal shaft swing hammer mill. The distribution of collision energies was then converted into a product size distribution for a particular ore type using JKMRC impact breakage test data. Experimental data of the Canica VSI crusher treating quarry and the BJD hammer mill treating coal were used to verify the DEM simulation results. Upon the DEM procedures being validated, a detailed simulation study was conducted to investigate the effects of the machine design and operational conditions on velocity and energy distributions of collision inside the milling chamber and on the particle breakage behaviour. Water wetting is a crucial issue in carbon dioxide (CO.) corrosion of multiphase flow pipelines made from mild steel. This study demonstrates the use of a novel benchtop apparatus, a horizontal rotating cylinder, to study the effect of water wetting on CO2 corrosion of mild steel in two-phase flow. The setup is similar to a standard rotating cylinder except for its horizontal orientation and the presence of two phases-typically water and oil. The apparatus has been tested by using mass-transfer measurements and CO2 corrosion measurements in single-phase water flow. CO2 corrosion measurements were subsequently performed using a water/hexane mixture with water cuts varying between 5% and 50%. While the metal surface was primarily hydrophilic under stagnant. conditions, a variety of dynamic water wetting situations was encountered as the water cut and fluid velocity were altered. Threshold velocities were identified at various water cuts when the surface became oil-wet and corrosion stopped.
