Geological investigation of a section at Kulyumbe river in Siberia

An integrated, high-resolution chemostratigraphic (C, O and Sr isotopes) and magnetostratigraphic study through the upper Middle Cambrian - lowermost Ordovician shallow-marine carbonates of the northwestern margin of the Siberian Platform is reported. The interval was analysed at the Kulyumbe section, which is exposed along the Kulyumbe River: an eastern tributary of the Enisej River. It comprises the upper Ust'-Brus, Labaz, Orakta, Kulyumbe, Ujgur, and lower Iltyk formations and includes the Steptoean positive carbon isotopic excursion (SPICE) studied here in detail from upper Cambrian carbonates of the Siberian Platform for the first time. The peak of the excursion, showing d13C positive values as high as +4.6? and least-altered 87Sr/86Sr ratios of 0.70909, is reported herein from the Yurakhian Horizon of the Kulyumbe Formation. The stratigraphic position of the SPICE excursion does not support traditional correlation of the boundary between the Orakta and Labaz formations at Kulyumbe River with its supposedly equivalent level in Australia, Laurentia, South China, and Kazakhstan, where the Glyptagnostus stolidotus and G. reticulatus biozones are known to immediately precede the SPICE excursion and span the Middle-Upper Cambrian boundary. The Cambrian-Ordovician boundary is probably situated in the middle Nyajan Horizon of the Iltyk Formation, in which carbon isotope values show a local maximum below a decrease in the upper part of the Nyajan Horizon, attributed herein to the Tremadocian. A refined magnetic polarity sequence shows that the geomagnetic reversal frequency was very high during the Middle Cambrian at 5-10 reversals per Ma, assuming a total duration of ~10 Ma and up to 100 magnetic intervals in the Middle Cambrian. By contrast, the sequence attributed herein to the Upper Cambrian on chemostratigraphic grounds contains only 10-11 magnetic intervals. Preprint in Open Access hdl:10013/epic.30209.d001

This battle was not over: Parade’s End as a transitional text in the development of ‘disenchanted’ First World War literature.

This chapter argues that the novels of Ford's Parade's End tetralogy occupy a significant place in the development of "disenchanted" fiction about the First World War. The values of Ernest Raymond's patriotic Tell England are contrasted with those of C. E Montague's Disenchantment, providing a brief synopsis of the early 1920s response to the conflict. Parade's End is seen as introducing several key themes in to the post-First World War discursive field, including national identity, psychology, memory, and time. The presentation of these aligned with the formal aspects of the novel, allows it to push the boundaries of the readerly horizon of expectations. Frayn argues that Ford's readership, though moderately-sized, was influential from a literary point of view, and thus facilitated the reception of later, more vitriolic, criticisms of war.

Impact of radiofrequency ablation for patients with varicose veins on the budget of the German statutory health insurance system

Objectives: In contrast to other countries, surgery still represents the common invasive treatment for varicose veins in Germany. However, radiofrequency ablation, e.g. ClosureFast, becomes more and more popular in other countries due to potential better results and reduced side effects. This treatment option may cause less follow-up costs and is a more convenient procedure for patients, which could justify an introduction in the statutory benefits catalogue. Therefore, we aim at calculating the budget impact of a general reimbursement of ClosureFast in Germany. Methods: To assess the budget impact of including ClosureFast in the German statutory benefits catalogue, we developed a multi-cohort Markov model and compared the costs of a “World with ClosureFast” with a “World without ClosureFast” over a time horizon of five years. To address the uncertainty of input parameters, we conducted three different types of sensitivity analysis (one-way, scenario, probabilistic). Results: In the Base Case scenario, the introduction of the ClosureFast system for the treatment of varicose veins saves costs of about 19.1 Mio. € over a time horizon of five years in Germany. However, the results scatter in the sensitivity analyses due to limited evidence of some key input parameters. Conclusions: Results of the budget impact analysis indicate that a general reimbursement of ClosureFast has the potential to be cost-saving in the German Statutory Health Insurance.

Mind the gap! An exploration of the role of lifelong learning in promoting co-production and citizenship within social care for older people

Contemporary themes in public policy have emphasised co-productive approaches within both the access and provision of support services to older people. This paper provides a cross disciplinary exploration from its respective authors perspectives on social work and educational gerontology to examine the potential for lifelong learning and learning interventions from which co-production with those using social care services in later life might be better facilitated. Using an example from the UK, we specifically elicit how co-produced care can enhance the horizon of learning and learning research. The synthesis of ideas across these two disciplines could enrich understanding and provide essential levers for moving towards empowerment and emancipation by engaging with a more co-productive approach in social care for older people. Optimal sequence of landfills in solid waste management

Given that landfills are depletable and replaceable resources, the right approach, when dealing with landfill management, is that of designing an optimal sequence of landfills rather than designing every single landfill separately. In this paper we use Optimal Control models, with mixed elements of both continuous and discrete time problems, to determine an optimal sequence of landfills, as regarding their capacity and lifetime. The resulting optimization problems involve splitting a time horizon of planning into several subintervals, the length of which has to be decided. In each of the subintervals some costs, the amount of which depends on the value of the decision variables, have to be borne. The obtained results may be applied to other economic problems such as private and public investments, consumption decisions on durable goods, etc.

Electron microprobe investigations of metamorphic reactions and mineral growth histories, Kwoiek area, British Columbia

The Kwoiek Area of British Columbia contains a pendant or screen of metamorphosed sedimentary and volcanic rocks almost entirely surrounded by a portion of the Coast Range Batholith, and intruded by several dozen stocks. The major metamorphic effects were produced by the quartz diorite batholithic rocks, with minor and later effects by the quartz diorite stocks. The sequence of important metamorphic reactions in the metasedimentary and metavolcanic rocks, ranging in grade from chlorite to sillimanite, is:

1. chlorite + carbonate + muscovite → epidote + biotite

2. chlorite + carbonate → actinolite + epidote

3. chlorite + muscovite → garnet + biotite

4. chlorite + epidote → garnet + hornblende

5. chlorite + muscovite → garnet + staurolite + biotite

6. chlorite + muscovite → aluminum silicate + biotite

7. muscovite + staurolite → garnet + aluminum silicate + biotite

8. staurolite → garnet + aluminum silicate

Continuous reactions, occurring between reactions 5 and 7, are:

A. chlorite + (high Ti) biotite + Al₂O₃ (from plagioclase?)→ garnet + staurolite + (low Ti) biotite + O₂

B. muscovite (phengitic) → garnet + staurolite +muscovite (less phengitic) + O₂ (?)

Detailed electron microprobe work on garnet, staurolite, biotite, and chlorite shows that:

(1) The garnet porphyroblasts are zoned according to a depletion model, called the Rayleigh depletion model, which assumes equilibrium between the edge of a growing garnet and the minerals which are unzoned, notably biotite, chlorite, and muscovite, but which assumes disequilibrium within the garnet.

(2) The staurolite porphyroblasts are also zoned, and from their zoning patterns reactions A, B, and 5 are documented. Progressive reduction of iron with increasing grade of metamorphism is also inferred from the staurolite zoning patterns.

(3) During a late period of falling temperature garnet continued to grow and the biotite and chlorite reequilibrated. The biotite, chlorite, and garnet edge compositions can vary from point to point in a given thin section, indicating that the volume of equilibrium at the final stage of metamorphism was only a few cubic microns.

(4) The horizon within the garnet that grew at maximum temperature can be identified. The Mg/Fe ratio of this horizon, if the garnet composition is a limiting composition in the Al₂O₃ - K₂O - FeO - MgO tetrahedron, increases systematically with increasing metamorphic grade. Biotite and chlorite compositions also show a general increase in Mg/Fe ratio with increasing metamorphic grade, but staurolite appears to show the reverse effect.

(5) The Mg/Fe ratio at the maximum temperature horizon of the garnet porphyroblasts is a function of its Mn content as evidenced from the study of five garnet-bearing rocks, collected from one outcrop area, with the same assemblage but with differing proportions of minerals.

An important implication of zoned minerals is that the effective composition of a system in a phase lies on the join between the homogeneous minerals (if there are two) and not within three-or- four-phase fields when a zoned mineral, such as garnet or staurolite, is present in the assemblage.

Study of the three aluminum silicates found in the Kwoiek Area showed that a constant pressure change in polymorphs from andalusite to kyanite to sillimanite took place with increasing temperature. This transition series is best explained by the metastable formation of andalusite.

What Determines the Innovativeness of Polish Family Firms? Empirical Results and Theoretical Puzzles

This article will review and synthesize the existing research on the innovativeness of Polish family firms in order to separate universal factors that influence the degree of innovativeness of firms from the factors which distinctively influence the innovativeness of family firms. To better assess the innovation propensity of family firms the author will work out the typology by combining the variety of innovations with particular features of family firms and the industrial context. A more nuanced approach will help to understand why the academic literature is inconclusive with regards to the question of whether family firms are anti-innovative (as some authors claim), pro-innovative or ambivalent with regard to innovations. In particular it will be argued that when assessing family firms’ innovativeness special attention needs to be paid to the impact of the management of intergenerational change on the propensity to innovate, as this process relates to the capacity for investments into innovativeness and the time horizon of the owner’s decisions.

When He is a She is a He : the pregnant man and the transgendered mother

The recent successful pregnancy of Thomas Beatie, a transgender FTM, billed by the various media as ‘the pregnant man’, has stirred up considerably diverse public opinion and debate, some supportive and indicative of changing and progressive ideas around sex, gender and sexuality; others condemnatory in their claims that Beatie’s pregnancy is an affront to the laws of Nature and/or God. Desired or derided, the pregnant male body contests the terrain of reproductive embodiment and the orthodoxy of Western systems of gender categorization. This chapter analyses a selection of media and internet responses to the case of the pregnant man, arguing that most disturbing of all it seems, is the body in-between (Kristeva 1982, p.4), the one that visibly defies socially obdurate gender oppositions of male and female, feminine and masculine in its insistence on being, to borrow from Homi Bhabha, a ‘third space of enunciation.’ Banana Yoshimoto’s novella Kitchen, also contests gender boundaries in its characterisation of Eriko, a transgendered male to female, a father, then a mother. In this narrative the in-between, the ambiguous, is not reviled but rather celebrated as a ‘horizon of possibility’ (Halperin, qtd in Jagose 1996 http://www.australianhumanitiesreview.org/archive/Issue-Dec- 1996/jagose.html).

Social cars : sensing, gathering, sharing and conveying social cues to road users

Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) resembles the infrastructure for ubiquitous computing in the car. It encompasses a) all kinds of sensing technologies within vehicles as well as road infrastructure, b) wireless communication protocols for the sensed information to be exchanged between vehicles (V2V) and between vehicles and infrastructure (V2I), and c) appropriate intelligent algorithms and computational technologies that process these real-time streams of information. As such, ITS can be considered a game changer. It provides the fundamental basis of new, innovative concepts and applications, similar to the Internet itself. The information sensed or gathered within or around the vehicle has led to a variety of context-aware in-vehicular technologies within the car. A simple example is the Anti-lock Breaking System (ABS), which releases the breaks when sensors detect that the wheels are locked. We refer to this type of context awareness as vehicle/technology awareness. V2V and V2I communication, often summarized as V2X, enables the exchange and sharing of sensed information amongst cars. As a result, the vehicle/technology awareness horizon of each individual car is expanded beyond its observable surrounding, paving the way to technologically enhance such already advanced systems. In this chapter, we draw attention to those application areas of sensing and V2X technologies, where the human (driver), the human’s behavior and hence the psychological perspective plays a more pivotal role. The focal points of our project are illustrated in Figure 1: In all areas, the vehicle first (1) gathers or senses information about the driver. Rather than to limit the use of such information towards vehicle/technology awareness, we see great potential for applications in which this sensed information is then (2) fed back to the driver for an increased self-awareness. In addition, by using V2V technologies, it can also be (3) passed to surrounding drivers for an increased social awareness, or (4), pushed even further, into the cloud, where it is collected and visualized for an increased, collective urban awareness within the urban community at large, which includes all city dwellers.

Orchids, intersex and the auto/biographical project

Auto/biographical documentaries ask audiences to take a ‘leap of faith’, not being able to offer any real ‘proof’ of the people and events they claim to document, other than that of the film-maker’s saying this is what happened. With only memory and history seen through the distorting lens of time, ‘the authenticity of experience functions as a receding horizon of truth in which memory and testimony are articulated as modes of salvage’. Orchids: My Intersex Adventure follows a salvaging of the film-maker’s life events and experiences, being born with an intersex condition, and, via the filming and editing process, revolving around the core question: who am I? From this transformative creative documentary practice evolves a new way of embodying experience and ‘seeing’, playfully dubbed here as the ‘intersex gaze’.

Idänkaupan loppu - Suomen ja Neuvostoliiton välinen erityinen kauppasuhde ja Suomen kauppapolitiikan odotushorisontti sen purkautuessa 1988–1991

Suomen kylmän sodan aikaisesta kaupankäynnistä sosialististen maiden kanssa poliittisesti ja taloudellisesti merkittävintä oli kahdenvälinen kauppasuhde Neuvostoliiton kanssa. Tässä tutkielmassa määrittelen idänkaupan Suomen ja Neuvostoliiton väliseksi erityissuhteeksi, jota luonnehti käsitys molempien toisilleen myöntämästä erityisasemasta, kaupan tason poliittinen merkitys, jatkuvuuden korostaminen sekä clearing-järjestelmä. Neuvostoliiton hajotessa vuonna 1991 myös idänkauppa loppui. Tässä tutkielmassa argumentoin kuitenkin, ettei idänkaupan loppuminen ollut suoranaisesti seurausta Neuvostoliiton hajoamisesta. Kehityskulut, jotka johtivat idänkaupan loppumiseen, olivat murtaneet perustan kahdenvälisen kaupan erityissuhteelta jo ennen kuin Neuvostoliitto lopetti olemassaolonsa. Tarkastelen kaupan erityissuhteen purkautumista vuosina 1988–1991. Keskeisiä tapahtumia idänkaupan loppuvaiheessa oli clearing-järjestelmän uudistaminen vuonna 1988, viimeisen clearingpohjaisen runkosopimuksen allekirjoittaminen 1989, clearing-järjestelmän lopettaminen vuonna 1990 sekä Neuvostoliiton hajoaminen 1991. Keskityn kauppapolitiikan valmistelutason toimintaan. Tärkeimmän lähdeaineiston muodostavat ulkoministeriön kauppapoliittisen osaston ja Suomen Pankin idänkaupan osaston arkistoaineisto. Tutkimuskysymys on kaksiosainen. Ensinnäkin tutkin Suomen kauppapolitiikan toimijoiden näkemyksiä idänkaupan tulevaisuudesta. Käsittelen sitä, miltä idänkaupan tulevaisuus näytti silloin, kun se oli loppumassa. Vaikka idänkaupan loppuminen näyttää jälkikäteen suoraviivaiselta, se ei ollut sitä tapahtumahetkellä. Käytän apunani Reinhart Koselleckin käsitteitä odotushorisontista (horizon of expectations) ja kokemusavaruudesta (space of experience). Toiseksi pyrin piirtämään kuvan siitä idänkaupasta, joka loppui. Tarkastelen idänkauppaa sille ominaisten piirteiden kautta selvittääkseni, mitkä idänkaupan ominaisuudet vaikuttivat sen loppumiseen. Tutkielman perusteella Suomen ja Neuvostoliiton välinen kauppasuhteen erityisyyden purkaantuminen johtui ensisijaisesti muutoksista Neuvostoliitossa, mutta myös Suomen ja kansainvälisen ympäristön poliittisilla ja taloudellisilla muutoksilla oli merkitystä. Idänkaupan järjestelmä loppui, koska se ei sopeutunut muuttuvaan maailmaan. Idänkaupan ilmiöön liittyneiden vahvojen epämuodollisten instituutioiden ansiota oli, että erityissuhde jatkui niin pitkään.

Generating string solutions in BTZ

Integrability of classical strings in the BTZ black hole enables the construction and study of classical string propagation in this background. We first apply the dressing method to obtain classical string solutions in the BTZ black hole. We dress time like geodesics in the BTZ black hole and obtain open string solutions which are pinned on the boundary at a single point and whose end points move on time like geodesics. These strings upon regularising their charge and spins have a dispersion relation similar to that of giant magnons. We then dress space like geodesics which start and end on the boundary of the BTZ black hole and obtain minimal surfaces which can penetrate the horizon of the black hole while being pinned at the boundary. Finally we embed the giant gluon solutions in the BTZ background in two different ways. They can be embedded as a spiral which contracts and expands touching the horizon or a spike which originates from the boundary and touches the horizon.

La pobreza de la Iglesia y los signos de los tiempos : Medellín como recepción inacabada del Vaticano II

Resumen: Una teología de los signos de estos tiempos latinoamericanos reclama ser localizada en el horizonte hermenéutico de la recepción del Concilio Vaticano II. La Conferencia de Medellín, como único caso de recepción continental del Concilio y ejercicio colegiado de discernimiento teológico pastoral de los signos de los tiempos, constituye un espacio ejemplar para la reflexión. En Medellín, la pobreza de la Iglesia y la preferencia por los pobres expresan una clave de esta recepción y un criterio al discernir los signos de esos tiempos; esta recepción realizada en Medellín, que puede considerarse fiel, creativa, selectiva e inacabada, pide ser reapropiada.

“Evangelización con espíritu” (EG 261) : la unidad de la teología, la espiritualidad y la pastoral al servicio del anuncio del evangelio: una lectura de la exhortación pastoral Evangelii Gaudium desde la Teología Espiritual

Resumen: Uno de los grandes “maestros en teología” en la Argentina de los últimos tiempos, Lucio Gera (+07.08.2012), cuyo segundo aniversario de fallecido honramos en este número de la revista Teología, hablaba de la ineludible exigencia posconciliar de integrar teología, espiritualidad y pastoral. El capítulo V de Evangelii gaudium, “Evangelizadores con Espíritu” (cf. EG 259ss), se ubica especialmente en este horizonte de convicciones porque tiene un inconfundible contenido teológico, un marcado acento espiritual y una clara orientación y lenguaje pastoral, pero sobre todo en razón de expresar una íntima compenetración entre estas tres dimensiones. En este artículo, que reelabora y amplía una presentación oral en la Jornada Evangelii gaudium, organizada por la Facultad de Teología de la UCA el pasado 5 de junio, se asume el vigor de la propuesta de una “evangelización con espíritu” (EG 261) y se reflexiona, en diálogo con nuestra iglesia local, sobre cuatro aspectos relacionados con ella: 1. una teología de la “evangelización con espíritu”, es decir, “con Espíritu Santo”; 2. una espiritualidad contemplativa: amar la Palabra y gustar ser pueblo; 3. el estilo pastoral mariano de la evangelización; y 4. la danza de la teología, la espiritualidad y la pastoral al servicio de la alegría de evangelizar.
