The morphology of 20 species of weeds that occur in the most common crops in Maringá, Paraná State, Brazil and adjacent regions were described at early developmental stages, in order to identify the species in the field and provide information for taxonomic and ecological works. Sixteen species featured epigeal-foliaceous seedlings. The seedling in Cardiospenuum halicacabum is epigeal-fleshy; in Cenchrus echinatus and Digitaria horizontalis it is hypogeal and in Commelina virginica is epigeal-cryptocotyledonar. The differentiation of the first eophyll occurred within ten (Digitaria horizontalis) to 35 days (Bidens pilosa) and the first metaphyll appeared within 22 (Commelina virginica) to 49 days (Acanthospenuum australe). The number of eophylls varied from one to four, and the phyllotaxis varied from alternate to opposite.

Six sympatric species of Haliotrema Johnston and Tiegs, 1922 are described from ostraciid fishes in Guadeloupe, West Indies. All have a basic cone-shaped cirrus, but characteristics of that and other terminal genitalia plus those of anchors can differentiate them: H. guadeloupensis sp. n. from Lactophrys triqueter (typehost) and L. bicaudalis; H. torridum sp. n. from L. triqueter (type-host) and Acanthostracion polygonius; H. glandulosum sp. n. from L. triqueter (type-host) and L. bicaudalis; H. minutum sp. n. from A. polygonius; H. lactophrys (MacCallum, 1915) comb. n. from A. polygonius and A. quadricornis which is transferred from the genus Ancyrocephalus Creplin, 1839; and H. kritskyi nom. nov. from A. polygonius. The latter has been given a replacement name for Parahaliotrema brevis. Mizelle and Kritsky, 1969 which would become a junior homonym because it, H. affinis (Mizelle and Kritsky, 1969) comb. n., H. cornutus (M. and K.) comb. n., H. grandis (M. and K.) comb. n., H. pacificus (M. and K.) comb. n., and H. zebrasoma (M. and K.) comb. n. are all transferred from the genus Parahaliotrema Mizelle and Price, 1964. We follow others in considering that genus to be a junior synonym of Haliotrema. We also determined that at least Ancyrocephalus parupenei Yamaguti, 1968 and A. pauu Yamaguti, 1968 do not belong in Ancyrocephalus. However, investigation of H. australe Johnston and Tiegs, 1922 and other species should precede transferring those species to another genus.

This layer is a georeferenced raster image of the historic paper map entitled: Carte du Chili méridional, du Rio de la Plata des Patagons, et du Détroit de Magellan : ce qui fait l'extremité australe de l'Amérique Meridle., par le sr. d'Anville. It was published by P. Santini in 1779. Scale [ca. 1:6,500,000]. Covers southern South America including portions of Chile, Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, and the Falkland Islands. Map in French. The image inside the map neatline is georeferenced to the surface of the earth and fit to a non-standard 'World Sinusoidal' projection with the central meridian at 58.000000 degrees west. All map collar and inset information is also available as part of the raster image, including any inset maps, profiles, statistical tables, directories, text, illustrations, index maps, legends, or other information associated with the principal map. This map shows features such as drainage, cities and other human settlements, territorial boundaries, shoreline features, and more. Relief is shown pictorially. Includes note. This layer is part of a selection of digitally scanned and georeferenced historic maps from the Harvard Map Collection and the Harvard University Library as part of the Open Collections Program at Harvard University project: Organizing Our World: Sponsored Exploration and Scientific Discovery in the Modern Age. Maps selected for the project correspond to various expeditions and represent a range of regions, originators, ground condition dates, scales, and purposes.

Bouvet (Bouvetøya) is a geologically young and very remote island just south of the Polar Front. Here we report samples taken during the RV "Polarstern" cruise ANTXXI/2 on 3 days in November 2003 and January 2004. This work was part of SCAR's EASIZ programme and intended, by providing data on the marine fauna of this "white gap" in the Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean, to contribute to identifying the role of Bouvet in the faunal exchange between the Sub- and high Antarctic. While this goal demands extensive molecular analysis of the material sampled (future work), a checklist of the samples and data at hand widens the faunal and environmental inventory substantially. We suggest some preliminary conclusions on the relationship of Bouvet Island's fauna with that of other regions, such as Magellanic South America, the Antarctic Peninsula, and the high Antarctic Weddell Sea, which have been sampled previously. There seem to be different connections for individual higher taxa rather than a generally valid consistent picture.

The Burnett River snapping turtle (Elseya sp.) from the Burnett, Mary and Fitzroy river systems is an undescribed Australian freshwater turtle, of which very little ecological information is known. This paper describes the dietary ecology of the species in the Burnett River catchment. Stomach and faecal samples were collected from turtles and an index of relative importance was used to rank food items found in stomach samples. This index indicated that algae and aquatic ribbon weed (Vallisneria) were the dominant food items consumed. No difference in diet was found between males and females. Although the sample size was small, diet appeared to vary slightly seasonally, with Elseya sp. selectively feeding on the flower buds of the Chinese elm tree (Celtis chinensis) and the seeds of the blackbean tree (Castanospermum australe) when these food items were seasonally available. Faecal samples suggest that the most ingested foods ( algae and aquatic ribbon weed) were also the most digestible. Although predominantly herbivorous, Elseya sp. was seen to eat carrion once in the wild.
