Mathematical literacy in Portugal is very unsatisfactory in what concerns international standards. Even more disturbingly, the Azores archipelago ranks as one of the worst regions of Portugal in this respect. We reason that the popularisation of Mathematics through interactive exhibitions and activities can contribute actively to disseminate mathematical knowledge, increase awareness of the importance of Mathematics in today’s world and change its negative perception by the majority of the citizens. Although a significant investment has been undertaken by the local regional government in creating several science centres for the popularisation of Science, there is no centre for the popularisation of Mathematics. We present our first steps towards bringing Mathematics to unconventional settings by means of hands-on activities. We describe in some detail three activities. One activity has to do with applying trigonometry to measure distances in Astronomy, which can also be applied to Earth objects. Another activity concerns the presence of numerical patterns in the Azorean flora. The third activity explores geometrical patterns in the Azorean cultural heritage. It is our understanding that the implementation of these and other easy-to-follow and challenging activities will contribute to the awareness of the importance and beauty of Mathematics.
Transient Spaces: unsettling boundaries and norms at the cultural event Noc Noc, Guimarães, Portugal

Cities are increasingly expected to be creative, inventive and to exhibit intense expressivity. In the past decades many cities have experienced growing pressure to produce and stage cultural events of different sorts and to develop new strategies that optimize competitive advantages, in order to promote themselves and to boost and sell their image. Often these actions have relied on heavy public investment and major private corporation sponsoring, but it is not always clear or measured how successful and reproductive these investments have been. In the context of strained public finances and profound economic crisis of European peripheral countries, events that emerge from local communities and have low budgets, which manage to create significant fluxes of visitors and visibility, assume an increased interest. In order to reflect and sketch possible answers, we look to an emerging body of literature concerning creative cities, and we focus on the organisation of a particular cultural event and its impact and assimilation into a medium size Portuguese city. This paper looks at the two editions (2011 and 2012) of one of such events – Noc Noc – organized by a local association in the city of Guimarães, Portugal. Inspired by similar events, Noc Noc is based on creating transient spaces of culture which are explored by artists and audiences, by transforming numerous homes into ephemeral convivial and playful social ‘public’ environments. The event is based on a number of cultural venues/homes scattered around the old and newer city, which allows for an informal urban exploration and an autonomous rambling and getting lost along streets. This strategy not only disrupts the cleavages between public and private space permitting for various transgressions, but it also disorders normative urban experiences and unsettles the dominant role of the city council as the culture patron of the large majority of events. Guimarães, an UNESCO World Heritage City was the European Capital of Culture in 2012, with a public investment of roughly 73 million euro. By interviewing a sample of people who have hosted these transitory art performances and exhibitions, sometimes doubling as artists, the events’ organizers and by experience both editions of the event, this paper illustrates how urban citizens’ engagement and motivations in a low budget cultural event can strengthen community ties. Furthermore, it also questions the advantages of large scale high budget events, and how this event may be seen as unconscious counter movement against a commodification of cultural events and everyday urban experience at large, engaging with the concepts of staging and authenticity.

Esta tese de doutoramento tem como campo de estudo o grafismo e a ilustração produzidos em Portugal durante os anos 40 do século XX. Ela foca a sua análise em quatro áreas de investigação: a) publicidade; b) grafismo e ilustração de jornais, revistas e livros; c) grafismo editorial produzido pelo Secretariado da Propaganda Nacional; d) grafismo de algumas publicações editadas por ocasião das exposições de Paris (1937), Nova Iorque e São Francisco (1939), e a Exposição do Mundo Português (1940). Através da pesquisa de fontes primárias – jornais, revistas, livros, anúncios, cartazes, material publicitário vário – em conjução com textos e artigos da época – procurámos fazer uma História do Design Gráfico em Portugal que tivesse em consideração não só a estética do material gráfico criado mas também a conjuntura histórica, económica, sociológica e ideológica em que esse material apareceu. Comparámos o grafismo realizado para as instituições públicas e aquele feito para as empresas privadas para concluir que há pontos de contacto entre os dois não só por os artistas serem quase sempre os mesmos mas também porque o mesmo discurso ideológico permeava tanto a propaganda do Estado Novo quanto a produção comercial ainda que houvesse a resistência de outras propostas estéticas e imaginários, como o surrealismo e o neo-realismo. António Ferro, director do Secretariado da Propaganda Nacional, soube aproveitar o talento de um núcleo de artistas para a criação de uma identidade visual para Portugal, uma identidade que sintetizasse elementos da arte popular com um enquadramento moderno. Através de múltiplas actividades essa identidade foi sendo desenvolvida e replicada mas é nas oportunidades de trabalho e experimentação dadas aos artistas modernistas portugueses que reside o verdadeiro legado de António Ferro para o Design Gráfico português.

Recently, we were faced with a request from a student photographer who wanted to take pictures of bodies donated to our institute and used for dissection courses for medical students or for scientific purposes. Students are expressly forbidden to take pictures in the dissection hall; however, we allowed this student photographer to do her diploma work in our institute. The reason why she was proposing such a topic was that her brother died young and her parents donated his body to science. To overcome this loss of a loved one, she wanted to know what happens to the donated bodies. She followed the procedure of embalming and different dissections that took place during the summer semester and she took pictures throughout. The outcome of this work was a very nice photographic document, called 'dissection', a book with many pictures but no figure legends. The image document shows the different steps in the preparation and preservation of bodies and the work of an anatomist in the dissection hall. As we impose rules on our students, we had also to give directives in the use of the photographs taken, especially for a photographer who will use the most prominent pictures for exhibitions, i.e. that the pictures do not show names or are used for publication on the internet, or show identification numbers of cadavers, or give indication ofn the institution and are relatively anonymous. This story tells how one can deal with death and at the same time advance one's personal career. Aquest projecte tracta del disseny i implementació d’una aplicació gràfica que permeti visualitzar diferents exposicions de quadres que es realitzin a la sala d’exposicions de la Hemeroteca General de la UAB, gestionada pel col·lectiu “Cultura en Viu”. La utilitat ha sigut desenvolupada mitjançant la llibreria gràfica OpenGL i Microsoft Visual Studio. L’aplicació generada és també una eina de creació i manipulació d’exposicions al servei del usuari.

Projecte d'exposició virtual de fotografies antigues de Traiguera (Baix Maestrat). L'estudi de les transformacions en les formes de vida del poble al llarg del segle XX es realitza mitjançant la principal font de la memòria visual que és la fotografia. El format d'exposició virtual respon a la intenció preservar i projectar el patrimoni local de la memòria visual, i també suposa una mirada des del present mitjançant les tecnologies de la informació i la comunicació sobre la nostra societat del passat.

The activities described here form part of an extensive programme in place in the Região Arqueológica de Central, state of Bahia, Brazil. After malacological and socio-environmental surveys in the area, a strategy comprising formal and non-formal education with an emphasis on schistosomiasis prevention was developed, introduced, and evaluated. Interviews were conducted of 142 students and 11 teachers, totalling 11 classes at six primary schools. On the basis of those interviews, four display cases and seven panels were prepared. In addition a table was set up where students could participate directly on the subject, drawing and recognising the factors involved in the schistosomiasis cycle. The exhibition was held at the Museu Arqueológico de Central. The endeavours of this paper underline the importance of health education as well as exhibitions to disease prevention activities.
