To examine the genetic controls of endosperm (ES) specificity, several cereal seed storage protein (SSP) promoters were isolated and studied using a transient expression analysis system. An oat globulin promoter (AsGlo1) capable of driving strong ES-specific expression in barley and wheat was identified. Progressive 5' deletions and cis element mutations demonstrated that the mechanism of specificity in the AsGlo1 promoter was distinct from that observed in glutelin and prolamin promoters. A novel interrupted palindromic sequence, ACATGTCAT-CATGT, was required for ES specificity and substantially contributed to expression strength of the AsGlo1 promoter. This sequence was termed the endosperm specificity palindrome (ESP) element. The GCN4 element, which has previously been shown to be required for ES specificity in cereal SSP promoters, had a quantitative role but was not required for tissue specificity. The 960-bp AsGlo1 promoter and a 251-bp deletion containing the ESP element also drove ES-specific expression in stably transformed barley. Reporter gene protein accumulated at very high levels (10% of total soluble protein) in ES tissues of plants transformed with an AsGlo1:GFP construct. Expression strength and tissue specificity were maintained over five transgenic generations. These attributes make the AsGlo1 promoter an ideal promoter for biotechnology applications. In conjunction with previous findings, our data demonstrate that there is more than one genetically distinct mechanism by which ES specificity can be achieved in cereal SSP promoters, and also suggest that there is redundancy between transcriptional and post-transcriptional tissue specificity mechanisms in cereal globulin genes.

The field of accountancy plays a vital role in the financial health of modern-day economies. It also attracts very large numbers of students, many for whom English is not their first language, who train in a variety of undergraduate and postgraduate programs at English-medium universities. Yet, surprisingly, the discourse of accountants has been under-reported in the ESP literature (Burns & Moore, 2007a). This paper reports research investigating spoken accounting discourse derived from simulated accountant–client consultations. It draws on the work of Drew and Heritage (1992), in which questioning is identified as a key discursive feature in institutional talk, and also the more recent work reported in Heritage and Maynard (2006), in which the complexity of the formulation of questions and responses is revealed in doctor–patient consultations. The paper discusses the use of simulations in cases where access to actual workplace settings by ESP teachers is unattainable, as well as the usefulness of the interactional data these simulations generate. The paper reports a questioning typology, derived from the data, showing six typical question types found in advice-giving simulated encounters in accountant–client taxation-based consultations: information; clarification; client-specified; backchannel; discourse-related; and interpersonal. The paper concludes with a discussion of the implications of this research for ESP teaching.

El estudio clínico del estado nutritivo de un grupo de niños en edad escolar, habitantes de un suburbio madrileño revela la existencia, relativamente rara, de signos carenciales específicos, que contrasta vivamente con el considerable retraso que se observa en su desarrollo somático. Los hechos parecen demostrar que el problema nutritivo de estos niños es sobre todo un problema cuantitativo. El retraso de la evolución está en relación con la insuficiencia global de la dieta y con el déficit de calcio que es probablemente el elemento individual con mayor grado de carencia en las dietas. La anemia que presenta el 98% de los niños no parece deberse únicamente a una deficiencia de hierro porque la dieta parece tener una cantidad adecuada; probablemente esté más en relación con el exiguo contenido de proteínas animales de la ración.

El estudio comparativo de dos grupos de niños en edad escolar y de nivel económico diferente demuestra que los que pertenecen a un suburbio madrileño económicamente pobre sufren un retraso en el crecimiento que se caracteriza por una talla y un peso inferiores en relación con la edad. El retraso del peso corporal es proporcionalmente mayor al de la talla. Cuando se calcula según WETZEL la edad que teóricamente corresponde al desarrollo corporal de estos niños se observa un retraso de 2,94 años para una edad término medio de 10,14 años. El retraso global del desarrollo somático representa por tanto el 29 por 100 de la edad cronológica media. Este retraso en el desarrollo debe atribuirse principalmente a causas dietéticas y no solo a carencias específicas, sino sobre todo a insuficiencia cuantitativa en la dieta consumida. Desde el punto de vista cualitativo es probablemente la falta de leche en la dieta uno de los más importantes factores en la génesis de este trastorno del desarrollo.

El artículo trata sobre el enfoque de inglés para fines específicos. Está dirigido a profesores de inglés general, aunque intenta también que la comunidad universitaria reconozca la importancia de evaluar la inversión de recursos en la enseñanza del inglés en función de sus resultados concretados. Se ofrece una descripción de las condiciones que se requieren para diseñar y efectuar estos cursos, acompañada de comentarios surgidos a partir de la experiencia del autor.This article provides information about the English for Specific Purposes (ESP) Approach. Although it is intended for teachers of General English, it also aims for the university community as a whole to evaluate how resources are currently invested in English teaching, with regard to the results obtained. A description of the conditions required to design and implement those courses is presented, along with the author's comments based on his own experience.

El objetivo del presente estudio es establecer el valor de la Electrificadora del Meta SA ESP EMSA ESP, para ello se hace una revisión general del departamento del Meta, el sector eléctrico Colombiano, y la EMSA ESP, se revisa la forma como la actividad empresarial de EMSA ESP en su papel de distribuidor y comercializador de energía eléctrica ha influido en el desarrollo y crecimiento de las comunidades del departamento del Meta -- El análisis finalmente establece el valor económico de EMSA ESP mediante el uso de la metodología de flujos de caja descontados tomando como base la información pública disponible de la Compañía y las proyecciones de los estados financieros necesarios para realizar la valoración; dado que se trata de una valoración externa e independiente de algún interés particular se presenta este ejercicio para que sirva como herramienta para la toma decisiones de inversión, pues se concluye que EMSA ESP es atractiva para los inversionistas si se tiene en cuenta los desarrollos económicos que se están presentando en el departamento del Meta y la Orinoquia Colombiana que genera una expectativa positiva en cuanto a su viabilidad económica y financiera para los próximos 10 años

Electrostatic Precipitators (ESP) are the most reliable and industrially used control devices to capture fine particles for reducing exhaust emission. Its efficiency is 99% or more. However, capturing submicron particles which are hazardous is still a problem as it involves complex flow phenomena and ESP design limitations. In this study, the effect of baffles on flow distribution inside the ESP is investigated computationally. Baffles are expected to increase the residence time of flue gas which helps to collect more particles into the collector plates, and hence increase the collection efficiency of an ESP. Besides, the placement of a baffle is likely to cause swirling of flue gas and hence sub-micron particles move towards the collector plate due to eccentric and electrostatic force. Therefore, the effects of position, shape and thickness of the baffles on collection efficiency which are also important for ESP design are reported in this study. The fluid flow distribution has been modelled using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software Fluent and the result and outcome are presented and discussed. The result shows that baffles have significant influence on fluid flow pattern and the efficiency of ESP.

Several hydrographic surveys were carried out in Pearl Lagoon, Nicaragua between april 1995 and december 1997 under the DIPAL (Proyecto para el Desarrollo Integral de la Pesca Artesanal en la Región Autónoma del Atlántico Sur) project. Surface temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen and turbidity have been measured in 88 hydrographic campaigns. The annual cycle shows maximum and minimum temperatures in May (29.4 °C) and December (25.6 °C) respectively, maximum salinity (25.6 °C) in April, one month before the thermal peak, and minimum salinities (2‰) between July and August, when the annual precipitation index attains its seasonal maximum in the study area. In the case of dissolved O2 the maximum values of oxygen saturation were observed between March and May (90%), when the water turbidity in the lagoon is at its lowest and freshwater contributions from the rivers attains its minimum value. During the rainy season, in the second half of the year, there is an important decrease in oxygen contents, mainly as a consequence of the degradation of organic matter of riverine origin.
