It has been demonstrated that glutamine, a conditionally essential amino acid, improves nitrogen balance, acts as a stimulant of protein synthesis, and decreases proteolysis in myopathic children. In contrast, other studies have shown no beneficial effect of glutamine supplementation on burn victims or critically ill patients. Nonetheless, we hypothesized that glutamine supplementation would increase the fractional protein synthesis rate (FSR) in the jejunal mucosa of malnourished male Wistar rats. Thus, the objective of the present study was to test the effect of daily oral glutamine supplementation (0.42 g kg(-1) d(-1) for 14 days) on the FSR of the jejunal mucosa of healthy and malnourished rats. A 4-hour kinetic study with L-[1-(13)C]leucine was subsequently performed, and jejunal biopsies were obtained 1.5 cm from the Treitz angle and analyzed. Malnourished rats showed a 25% weight loss and increased urinary nitrogen excretion. Plasma amino acid concentration did not differ between groups. (13)C enrichment in plasma and jejunal cells was higher in the malnourished groups than in the healthy group. The FSR (percent per hour) was similar for the control and experimental groups (P > .05), with a mean range of 220%/h to 27%/h. Oral glutamine supplementation alone did not induce higher protein incorporation by the jejunal mucosa in malnourished rats, regardless of total food intake or the presence or absence of glutamine supplementation. Colonisation and infection by Candida species occur frequently in acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), but their relationship to the humoral immunity against candidiasis is controversial. To evaluate the levels of antibodies to Candida in the serum and in the saliva of HIV-1-infected patients in relation to the presence of immunodeficiency, oral candidiasis and Candida colonisation, Candida was investigated in the urine and in the oral and anal mucosae of HIV-1-infected patients, AIDS patients and healthy controls. The levels of IgG, IgM and IgA antibodies to Candida were determined in the serum and in the saliva by immunoassay. Candida species were detected in 76% of the patients. Mucosal yeast colonisation and the levels of serum and saliva antibodies to Candida were similar between asymptomatic HIV-infected and non-infected patients. Mucosal colonisation was highest in AIDS patients, who also had higher serum IgA and saliva IgG antibodies. Antibody levels were similar in patients with and without candidiasis oral lesions. Asymptomatic HIV-infected individuals are similar to non-infected individuals with respect to mucosal colonisation as well as serum and saliva levels of antibodies to Candida. The higher mucosal colonisation and clinical candidiasis observed in the AIDS patients apparently stimulated a more intense humoral response to the yeast.

The study of lingual surfaces and the surface of interface epithelium-connective tissue of the tongue of Bradypus torquatus was performed by employing the light and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) techniques. The results revealed that the rostral part of the tongue presents a round apex and covered by filiform and fungiform lingual papillae and a ventral smooth surface. It was observed that the epithelial layer of the dorsal surface possesses the basal, spinosum, granular and cornified epithelial cells. The lamina propria is characterized by a dense connective tissue forming the long, short and round papillae. Numerous typical filiform papillae are located especially in the rostral part intermingled for few fungiform papillae, which were revealed in three-dimensional SEM images. Usually, the fungiform papillae are located in the border of rostral apex of the tongue exhibiting the rounded form. They are covered by keratinized epithelial cells. In the fungiform papillae, several taste pores were observed on the surface. The vallate papillae presented numerous taste buds in the wall of epithelial cells, being that the major number of taste buds is located on the superior half of vallate papilla. The taste pores are surrounded by several laminae of keratinized epithelial cells. The samples treated with NaOH solution and examined by SEM revealed, after removal of the epithelial layer, the dense connective core in original disposition, presenting different sizes and shapes. The specimens stained with Picrosirius and examined by polarized light microscopy revealed the connective tissue, indicating the collagen fibres type I and type III.

Little is known about the physiological mechanisms related to low-intensity laser therapy (LILT), particularly in acute inflammation and subsequent wound healing. The objective of this study was to verify the effect of LILT on mast cell degranulation. Epulis fissuratum tissues from eight patients were used. One part of the lesion was irradiated with an AsGaAl laser (lambda = 670 nm, 8.0 J/cm(2), 5 mW, 4 min). The other part was not irradiated. Then, the specimens were immediately removed, fixed and examined by light microscopy. The number of mast cells was similar in laser-treated samples when compared with non-irradiated specimens. The degranulation indexes of the mast cells observed in the irradiated samples were significantly higher than those of controls (P < 0.05). LILT with the parameters used increased the number of degranulated mast cells in oral mucosa.

Radiotherapy produces both acute and delayed effects on mucosal tissues, disturbing their healing. This report shows a successful treatment with laser phototherapy (LPT) on a delayed wound healing in oral mucosa previously submitted to radiotherapy with a follow up of 3 years. A 47-year-old patient treated 6 months earlier for tongue squamous cell carcinoma by surgery and radiotherapy presented with a mass in the operated area. Biopsy showed chronic inflammatory infiltrate around a residual polyglactin suture. After 2 months there was a painful mucosal dehiscence on the biopsy site. LPT was performed using a semiconductor laser with 660-nm wavelength (InGaAlP) and spot size of 0.04 cm(2). The parameters applied were 40 mW, 4 Jcm(2)/point, 0.16 J/point, 2.4 J/session. The irradiation was performed punctually, through contact mode in 15 points (4 seconds/point), on top of and around the lesion, during ten sessions. The wound healed completely after ten sessions. This treatment proved to be conservative and effective, inducing healing of a chronic wound in a tissue previously submitted to radiotherapy.

The immunossuppression caused by HIV infection makes the affected individuals more susceptible to some diseases including infections, neoplasms, or even the association between them. Kaposi sarcoma (KS) is the most common AIDS-related neoplasm, featured as an angioproliferative disorder. Its cause seems to be related to the human herpesvirus type 8 and it is usually associated with lower CD4+ T cell count. Oral involvement is frequent, presenting red to blue-purplish plaques, maculaes, and nodules. On the other hand, paracoccidioidomycosis (PCM) is a systemic mycosis, endemic in Latin America, caused by Paracoccidioides brasiliensis. This mycosis is not commonly related to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection, although PCM can be present in immunosuppression cases. Oral lesions, as granulomatous ulcers, are often identified in seropositive patients with PCM. A rare case, in which a male HIV-positive patient presented simultaneously Kaposi sarcoma and PCM in the same fragment of oral mucosa biopsy, is described. To the best of our knowledge, this concomitant association had not been previously described. (C) 2011 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Glutatione S-transferases (GSTs) are a family of enzymes involved in detoxification of xenobiotics. Placental GST, known as GST-P, has been detected in tissues following exposure to carcinogenic agents being regarded a reliable biomarker of exposure and susceptibility in early phases of carcinogenesis. The aim of this study was to investigate the expressivity of GST-P positive foci in the rat tongue mucosa exposed to cigarette smoke by means of immunohistochemistry. A total of twelve male Wistar rats were distributed into two groups: negative control and experimental group exposed to cigarette smoke during 75 days. After experimental period, no histopathological changes in the tongue mucosa were evidenced in the negative control and the experimental group. However, a total of five GST-P positive foci were detected in two out of six animals exposed to cigarrette smoke. None control animals were noticed GST-P positive foci. These data indicate that expression of GST-P may reflect the carcinogenic effect of cigarette smoke as well as the genetic susceptibility of animals in relation to continuous carcinogens exposure.

Schwannoma is a benign tumor arising from nerve-sheath Schwann cells. When it affects the mouth, the lips are rarely involved. A MEDLINE search in the English literature from 1969 to 2009 revealed only 17 documented cases of schwannomas of the lip. This report describes the unusual case of a 52-year-old man who developed a schwannoma of the lower lip. Histopathologic examination and immunohistochemical staining studies were performed. Although rare, schwannoma should be considered in the differential diagnosis of any nodule or mass in the oral mucosa. (Quintessence Int 2010; 41: 769-771)
