Since the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, international law has had to grapple with the fundamental challenges that large-scale violence carried out by non-State actors poses to the traditional inter- State orientation of international law. Questions related to the “adequacy” and “effectiveness” of international humanitarian law, international human rights law and the law related to the use of force have been particularly pronounced. This paper focuses on the international humanitarian law implications of American drone attacks in northwest Pakistan. A highly-advanced modality of modern warfare, armed drones highlight the possibilities, problems, prospects and pitfalls of high-tech warfare. How is the battlefield to be defined and delineated geographically and temporally? Who can be targeted, and by whom? Ultimately, this paper concludes that American drone attacks in northwest Pakistan are not unlawful as such under international humanitarian law, though, like any tactical decision in the context of asymmetric warfare, they should be continuously and closely monitored according to the dictates of law with sensitivity to facts on the ground.

The study was carried out at the UNESP Rio Claro campus (SP), where biotests consisting of simulated ant attacks were performed in colonies of Mischocyttarus cerberus. The behaviors of the wasps were recorded with a camcorder, for further analysis. This analysis was done using the Mann-Whitney U test and the Principal Component Analysis. In the pre-emergence development stage, colonies with a single foundress defend the nest only after the first larvae appear. When there are only eggs in the nest, the wasp abandons the nest. Before leaving, the wasp rubs its gaster against the nest, releasing the ant repellent secretion. When the nest contains larvae or larvae and pupae, the foundress defends the colony, vibrating its wings, pumping her abdomen and biting the ant.

In Lactococcus lactis IL1403, 14 genes are under the control of the copper-inducible CopR repressor. This so-called CopR regulon encompasses the CopR regulator, two putative CPx-type copper ATPases, a copper chaperone, and 10 additional genes of unknown function. We addressed here the function of one of these genes, ytjD, which we renamed cinD (copper-induced nitroreductase). Copper, cadmium, and silver induced cinD in vivo, as shown by real-time quantitative PCR. A knockout mutant of cinD was more sensitive to oxidative stress exerted by 4-nitroquinoline-N-oxide and copper. Purified CinD is a flavoprotein and reduced 2,6-dichlorophenolindophenol and 4-nitroquinoline-N-oxide with k(cat) values of 27 and 11 s(-1), respectively, using NADH as a reductant. CinD also exhibited significant catalase activity in vitro. The X-ray structure of CinD was resolved at 1.35 A and resembles those of other nitroreductases. CinD is thus a nitroreductase which can protect L. lactis against oxidative stress that could be exerted by nitroaromatic compounds and copper.

Plants have evolved intricate strategies to withstand attacks by herbivores and pathogens. Although it is known that plants change their primary and secondary metabolism in leaves to resist and tolerate aboveground attack, there is little awareness of the role of roots in these processes. This is surprising given that plant roots are responsible for the synthesis of plant toxins, play an active role in environmental sensing and defense signaling, and serve as dynamic storage organs to allow regrowth. Hence, studying roots is essential for a solid understanding of resistance and tolerance to leaf-feeding insects and pathogens. Here, we highlight this function of roots in plant resistance to aboveground attackers, with a special focus on systemic signaling and insect herbivores
