Canadian Cardiovascular Society 2009 Consensus Conference on the management of adults with congenital heart disease: executive summary

With advances in pediatric cardiology and cardiac surgery, the population of adults with congenital heart disease (CHD) has increased. In the current era, there are more adults with CHD than children. This population has many unique issues and needs. They have distinctive forms of heart failure, and their cardiac disease can be associated with pulmonary hypertension, thromboemboli, complex arrhythmias and sudden death.Medical aspects that need to be considered relate to the long-term and multisystemic effects of single-ventricle physiology, cyanosis, systemic right ventricles, complex intracardiac baffles and failing subpulmonary right ventricles. Since the 2001 Canadian Cardiovascular Society Consensus Conference report on the management of adults with CHD, there have been significant advances in the understanding of the late outcomes, genetics, medical therapy and interventional approaches in the field of adult CHD. Therefore, new clinical guidelines have been written by Canadian adult CHD physicians in collaboration with an international panel of experts in the field. The present executive summary is a brief overview of the new guidelines and includes the recommendations for interventions. The complete document consists of four manuscripts that are published online in the present issue of The Canadian Journal of Cardiology, including sections on genetics, clinical outcomes, recommended diagnostic workup, surgical and interventional options, treatment of arrhythmias, assessment of pregnancy and contraception risks, and follow-up requirements. Bologna Process Bucharest Ministerial Conference Takes Place amid Political Crisis in Romania. EUMA Papers Series Vol. 12, No. 5, May 2012

During the last week in April the Ministers responsible for higher education from 47 countries convened in Bucharest, Romania for the Ministerial Conference of the Bologna Process. On April 26 and 27, 2012 the venue for the meeting was the Palace of the Parliament, which was constructed by the dictator Nicolae Ceauşescu in 1984 and completed the year before his death by execution on Christmas Day 1989. One of the largest civilian buildings in the world was location for the first ministerial conference to take place since the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) became effective in 2010. Originally the creation of the EHEA was envisaged by the Bologna Process Declaration in 1999 which had representatives from 29 countries as signatories. This essay will describe the proceedings of the Ministerial Conference, report on the negotiations among delegates in parallel sessions and plenary sessions, discuss the thematic sessions with emphasis on “Global academic mobility: Incentives and barriers, balances and imbalances” and review the adoption of the Bucharest Communiqué and the Bologna Policy Forum Statement.

The 27th British liquid crystal society annual meeting 2013, Cambridge

Attending the British Liquid Crystal Society’s (BLCS) Annual Meeting was a formative experience in my days as a PhD student, starting way back in the 1990s. At that time, this involved travelling to (to me) exotic parts of the United Kingdom, such as Reading, Oxford or Manchester, away from Southampton where I was based. Some postdoctoral years in a different country followed, and three BLCS Meetings were missed, until in 1997 and 1998, I was able to attend again, in Southampton and Leeds, respectively. Not much had changed from my student days, the size and the format were still about the same, many of the leading characters were still around, and the closing talk would still be given by John Lydon. Well, at some point, I got myself a proper academic job on the Continent and stopped attending BLCS Annual Meetings altogether. The fond memories of my youth started to fade. Were the Meetings still on? It seemed so, as old friends and acquaintances would occasionally recount attending them, and even winning prizes at them. But, it all seemed rather remote now. Until, that is, it came to pass that the 27th BLCS Meeting would be held in Selwyn College, Cambridge, just down (or up, depending on how you look at it) the road from the Isaac Newton Institute, where I was spending part of my sabbatical leave. The opportunity to resume attendance could not be missed. A brief e-mail exchange with the organisers, and a cheque to cover the fee, duly secured this. And thus, it was with trepidation that I approached my first BLCS Annual Meeting in more than a decade.

Broadening the CRM domain of application to higher educational (e-learning) environments

In this paper, we reflect about the broadening of the field of application of CRM from the business domain to a wider context of relationships in which the inclusion of non-profit making organizations seems natural. In particular, we focus on analyzing the suitability of adopting CRM processes by universities and higher educational institutions dedicated to e-learning. This is an issue that, in our opinion, has much potential but has received little attention in research so far.

Differences and connections: beyond universal theories in planning, urban, and heritage studies

The annual Young Academics network of the Association of European School of Planning (AESOP YA) conference, entitled Differences and Connections, was held for the first time in a Southern Italian city, Palermo, Italy, during 23–26 March 2015. The call for papers attracted a wide range of authors within the field of planning and other related fields. Forty-five contributions by young academic scholars, representing 19 countries, were selected by the conference scientific committee to critically explore the themes of the conference.
