Luminescent CdSe and CdSe/CdS core-shell nanocrystals synthesized via a combination of solvothermal and two-phase thermal routes

A new solvothermal route has been developed for synthesizing the size-controlled CdSe nanocrystals with relatively narrow size distribution, and the photoluminescence (PL) quantum yields (QYs) of the nanocrystals can reach 5-10%. Then the obtained CdSe nanocrystals served as cores to prepare the core/shell CdSe/CdS nanocrystals via a two-phase thermal approach, which exhibited much higher PL QYs (up to 18-40%) than the CdSe core nanocrystals. The nanocrystal samples were characterized by ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) absorption spectra, PL spectra, wide-angle Xray diffraction (WAXD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM).

Photoelectrocatalysis: Principles, nanoemitter applications and routes to bio-inspired systems

An overview on processes that are relevant in light-induced fuel generation, such as water photoelectrolysis or carbon dioxide reduction, is given. Considered processes encompass the photophysics of light absorption, excitation energy transfer to catalytically active sites and interfacial reactions at the catalyst/solution phase boundary. The two major routes envisaged for realization of photoelectrocatalytic systems, e.g. bio-inspired single photon catalysis and multiple photon inorganic or hybrid tandem cells, are outlined. For development of efficient tandem cell structures that are based on non-oxidic semiconductors, stabilization strategies are presented. Physical surface passivation is described using the recently introduced nanoemitter concept which is also applicable in photovoltaic (solid state or electrochemical) solar cells and first results with p-Si and p-InP thin films are presented. Solar-to-hydrogen efficiencies reach 12.1% for homoepitaxial InP thin films covered with Rh nanoislands. In the pursuit to develop biologically inspired systems, enzyme adsorption onto electrochemically nanostructured silicon surfaces is presented and tapping mode atomic force microscopy images of heterodimeric enzymes are shown. Distinct routes to metastasis: plasticity-dependent and plasticity-independent pathways.

The cascade that culminates in macrometastases is thought to be mediated by phenotypic plasticity, including epithelial-mesenchymal and mesenchymal-epithelial transitions (EMT and MET). Although there is substantial support for the role of EMT in driving cancer cell invasion and dissemination, much less is known about the importance of MET in the later steps of metastatic colonization. We created novel reporters, which integrate transcriptional and post-transcriptional regulation, to test whether MET is required for metastasis in multiple in vivo cancer models. In a model of carcinosarcoma, metastasis occurred via an MET-dependent pathway; however, in two prostate carcinoma models, metastatic colonization was MET independent. Our results provide evidence for both MET-dependent and MET-independent metastatic pathways.

Convenient synthetic routes to bidentate and monodentate 2-, 3- and 4-pyridyl phosphines: potentially useful ligands for water-soluble complex catalysts

The monodentate and bidentate pyridyl phosphines, PR3 and R2P(CH2)2PR2, where R=3- or 4-pyridyl can be prepared in high yields by treatment of butyllithium/TMEDA/3- or 4-bromopyridine with PCl3 or Cl2P(CH2)2PCl2 at low temperature. 1,2-Bis(di-2-pyridylphosphino)ethane is conveniently synthesised by an alternative route involving reaction of 1,2-dibromoethane with lithium di-2-pyridylphosphide.

Three-machine shop scheduling with partially ordered processing routes

This paper considers the problem of sequencing n jobs in a three-machine shop with the objective of minimising the maximum completion time. The shop consists of three machines, M1,M2 and M_{3}. A job is first processed on M1 and then is assigned either the route (M2,M_{3}) or the route (M_{3},M2). Thus, for our model the processing route is given by a partial order of machines, as opposed to the linear order of machines for a job shop, or to an arbitrary sequence of machines for an open shop. The main result is on O(nlog n) time heuristic, which generates a schedule with the makespan that is at most 5/3 times the optimum value.

Putting down routes: an examination of local government cultural policy shaping the development of heritage trails

This paper explores the significance of trails within local government cultural strategies by presenting the results of an audit of 1000 trails, content analysis of local cultural strategies and a series of interviews with local government cultural officers. It highlights the growing sophistication of trails as flexible and multi-faceted products promising an array of social, environmental, cultural and economic benefits. However, key issues emerge as challenges for local government cultural officers. These include the need for a realistic assessment of the relative importance of competing rationales, the design of methodologies to enable evidence-based policy making and more effective engagement with commercial organisations.

Policy packages as potential routes to urban road pricing in the UK

This paper focuses on urban road pricing as a demand management policy that is often regarded as radical and generally unacceptable. Road pricing often gets delayed or abandoned due to low acceptability. This may be due to the fact that complex interactions and drivers of change affect road transport management and require cooperation within implementation networks. The implementation network is a group of people (referred to as partners and actors) who co-ordinate the introduction of policy tools. The drivers of change include any internal or external influences that have an effect on the time, place, or ‘shape’ of the policy measures being introduced. Demand management measures that focus on 'sustainable transport' usually address a limited set of objectives and are often implemented alone i.e. are not necessarily combined with other policy measures. When combined with other measures, it is not always clear whether the multiple interactions between policy tools and implementation networks have been sufficiently considered. Examples of ongoing implementation of policy package in the UK are the support of road pricing initiatives combined with public transport improvements by the Transport Innovation Fund. The objectives of the paper are twofold. First, we present a review of the UK urban road pricing situation. Second, we contrast the emerging issues against six key implementation factors. The analysis of three existing UK road pricing examples - London, Edinburgh and Durham – shows the importance of combining policy tools. Furthermore, through the above examples and theoretical arguments, we emphasise the additional need of creating and maintaining strong networks when implementing policy packages.

Tandem enzyme-catalysed oxidations of alkyl phenyl sulfides and alkyl benzenes: enantiocomplementary routes to chiral phenols.

Dioxygenase-catalysed trioxygenation of alkyl phenyl sulfides and alkyl benzenes yields enantiopure cis-dihydrodiol sulfoxides and triols respectively; naphthalene cis-dihydrodiol dehydrogenase-catalysed aromatisation of these diastereoisomers gives enantiopure catechols of either configuration.

Tandem enzyme-catalysed reduction/cis-dihydroxylation of 2,2,2-trifluoroacetophenone: chemoenzymatic routes to new enantiopure phenol and benzylic alcohol reagents

Factors that control the competition between toluene dioxgenase-catalysed arene cis-dihydroxylation and dehydrogenase-catalysed ketone reduction have been studied, using whole cells of Pseudomonas putida UV and three alkylaryl ketones. The triol metabolite, obtained from 2,2,2-trifluoroacetophenone, has been used in the synthesis of single enantiomer chiral phenols and benzylic alcohols. Potential applications of the methylether derivatives of the chiral phenols and benzylic alcohols, as resolving agents, have been found. (c) 2007 Society of Chemical Industry.

Enzyme-catalysed oxygenation and deoxygenation routes to chiral thiosulfinates

Enantioenriched thiosulfinates have been obtained by dioxygenase- and chloroperoxidase-catalysed oxidation of 1,2-disulfides and dimethyl sulfoxide reductase-catalysed deoxygenation.
