To some copies of the work John Cotton's "The way of Congregational churches cleared" was appended. Mr. Cotton's treatise continues the answers to Rutherford, begun by Mr. Hooker in pt. 1, chap. 10, which ends on p. 139, the next page is blank, and chapter 11 follows, numbered 185 with a new signature. It is thought that it may have been the intention of the editors to incorporate Mr. Cotton's work in this division of the Survey, between p. 139 and 185.

Research in the present thesis is focused on the norms, strategies, and approaches which translators employ when translating humour in Children's Literature from English into Greek. It is based on process-oriented descriptive translation studies, since the focus is on investigating the process of translation. Viewing translation as a cognitive process and a problem soling activity, this thesis Think-aloud protocols (TAPs) in order to investigate translator's minds. As it is not possible to directly observe the human mind at work, an attempt is made to ask the translators themselves to reveal their mental processes in real time by verbalising their thoughts while carrying out a translation task involving humour. In this study, thirty participants at three different levels of expertise in translation competence, i.e. tn beginner, ten competent, and ten experts translators, were requested to translate two humourous extracts from the fictional diary novel The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole, Aged 13 ¾ by Sue Townsend (1982) from English into Greek. As they translated, they were asked to verbalise their thoughts and reason them, whenever possible, so that their strategies and approaches could be detected, and that subsequently, the norms that govern these strategies and approaches could be revealed. The thesis consists of four parts: the introduction, the literature review, the study, and the conclusion, and is developed in eleven chapters. the introduction contextualises the study within translation studies (TS) and presents its rationale, research questions, aims, and significance. Chapters 1 to 7 present an extensive and inclusive literature review identifying the principles axioms that guide and inform the study. In these seven chapters the following areas are critically introduced: Children's literature (Chapter 1), Children's Literature Translation (Chapter 2), Norms in Children's Literature (Chapter 3), Strategies in Children's Literature (Chapter 4), Humour in Children's Literature Translation (Chapter 5), Development of Translation Competence (Chapter 6), and Translation Process Research (Chapter 7). In Chapters 8 - 11 the fieldwork is described in detail. the piolot and the man study are described with a reference to he environments and setting, the participants, the research -observer, the data and its analysis, and limitations of the study. The findings of the study are presented and analysed in Chapter 9. Three models are then suggested for systematising translators' norms, strategies, and approaches, thus, filling the existing gap in the field. Pedagogical norms (e.g. appropriateness/correctness, famililarity, simplicity, comprehensibility, and toning down), literary norms (e.g. sound of language and fluency). and source-text norms (e.g. equivalence) were revealed to b the most prominent general and specific norms governing the translators'  strategies and approaches in the process of translating humour in ChL. The data also revealed that monitoring and communication strategies (e.g. additions, omissions, and exoticism) were the prevalent strategies employed by translators. In Chapter 10 the main findings and outcomes of a potential secondary benefit (beneficial outcomes) are discussed on the basis of the research questions and aims of the study, and implications of the study are tackled in Chapter 11. In the conclusion, suggestions for future directions are given and final remarks noted.

In their discussion - Fast-Food Franchises: An Alternative Menu for Hotel/Casinos - by Skip Swerdlow, Assistant Professor of Finance, Larry Strate, Assistant Professor of Business Law, and Francis X. Brown, Assistant Professor of Hotel Administration at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, their preview reads: Hotel/casino food service operations are adding some non-traditional fare to their daily offerings in the form of fast-food franchises. The authors review aspects of franchising and cite some new Las Vegas food ideas.” The authors offer that the statewide food and beverage figures, according to the Nevada Gaming Abstract of 1985, exceeded $1.24 billion. Most of that figure was generated in traditional coffee shops, gourmet dining rooms, and buffets. With that kind of food and beverage figure solidly on the table, it was inevitable that fast-food franchises would move into casinos to garner a share of the proceeds. In a March 1986 review of franchising, Restaurant Business reported the following statistics: “Over 60 percent of all restaurants are franchisee owned. This relationship is also paralleled in dollar sales, which has exceeded $53 billion.” “Restaurant franchising expansion has grown at an annual rate of 12 percent per year for the past five years.” The beginning of the article is dedicated to describing, in general, the franchise phenomenon; growth has been spectacular the authors inform you. “The franchise concept has provided an easy method of going into business for the entrepreneur with minimal business experience, but a desire to work hard to make a profit,” say professors Swerdlow, Strate, and Brown. Lured by tourist traffic, and the floundering Chapter 11 afflicted, Riviera Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Burger King saw an attractive opportunity for an experiment in non-traditional outlet placement, say the authors. Although innately transient, the tourist numbers were way too significant to ignore. That tourist traffic, the authors say, is ‘round-the-clock. Added to that figure is the 2000-3000 average employee count for many of the casinos on the ‘Vegas strip. Not surprisingly, the project began to look very appealing to both Burger King and the Riviera Hotel/Casino, the authors report. In the final analysis, the project did work out well; very well indeed. So it is written, “The successful operation of the Burger King in the Riviera has sparked interest by other existing hotel/casino operations and fast-food restaurant chains. Burger King's operation, like so many other industry leadership decisions, provides impetus for healthy competition in a market that is burgeoning not only because of expansion that recognizes traditional population growth, but because of bold moves that search for customers in non-traditional areas.” The authors provide an Appendix listing Las Vegas hotel/casino properties and the restaurants they contain.

This thesis explores two distinct parts of mitochondrial physiology: the role of mitochondria in generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and mitochondrial morphology and dynamics within cells. The first area of research is covered in Chapters 1-8. Mitochondrial biofunctionality and ROS production are discussed in Chapter 1, followed by the strategy of targeting bioactive compounds to mitochondria by linking them to lipophilic triphenylphosphonium cations (TPP) (Chapter 2). ROS sensors relevant to the research are reviewed in Chapter 3. Chapter 4 presents design and synthesis of novel probes for superoxide detection in mitochondria (MitoNeo-D), cytosol (Neo-D) and extracellular environment (ExCellNeo-D). The results of biological validation of MitoNeo-D and Neo-D performed in the MRC MBU in Cambridge are presented in Chapter 5. A dicationic hydrogen peroxide sensor that utilizes in situ click chemistry is discussed in Chapter 6. Preliminary work on the synthesis of mitochondria-targeted superoxide generators, which led to the development of mitochondria-targeted analogue of paraquat, MitoPQ, is presented in Chapter 7. A set of bifunctional probes (BCN-Mal, BCN-E-BCN and Mito-iTag) for assessing the redox states of protein thiols is discussed in Chapter 8 along with their biological validation. The second part of the thesis is aimed at the study of mitochondrial morphology and dynamics and is presented in Chapters 9-11. Chapter 9 provides background on the classes of fluorophores relevant to the research, the phenomenon of fluorescence quenching and the principle of photoactivation with examples of photoactivatable fluorophores. Next, the background on mitochondrial morphology and heterogeneity is presented in Chapter 10, followed by the ways of imaging and tracking mitochondria within cells by conventional fluorophores and by photoactivatable fluorophores exploiting super-resolution microscopy. Chapter 11 presents the design and synthesis of four photoactivatable fluorophores for mitochondrial tracking, MitoPhotoRhod110, MitoPhotoNIR, Photo-E+, MitoPhoto-E+, along with results of biological validation of MitoPhotoNIR. The results and discussion concludes with Chapter 12, which is a summary and suggestions for future work, followed by the chemistry experimental procedures (Chapter 13), materials and methods for biological experiments (Chapter 14) and references.

The work presented in this thesis deals with the investigation of new prototypes of molecular machines, based on rotaxane and pseudorotaxane architectures, by means of voltammetric and spectroscopic techniques. The discussion is divided in two parts. Part I concerns the investigation of electro-switchable molecular muscles, based on mechanically interlocked molecules. This study is performed on systems of increasing complexity, starting from [2]rotaxanes and arriving to polymers. In Chapters 3 and 4, [2]- and [3]rotaxanes, characterized by the presence of three stations for the macrocycle(s), are investigated. In both systems, the macrocycle(s) movement can be controlled through a combination of stimuli, resulting in a processive and directional motion. In Chapter 5, daisy chain rotaxanes, dimers of the [2]rotaxanes discussed in Chapter 3, are investigated. These systems can be switched between an extended and a contracted conformation, and they represent the monomeric units for the realization of polymeric molecular muscles. In Chapter 6, the properties of electro-switchable polymeric molecular muscles, composed by the daisy chains investigated in Chapter 5, are discussed. The repeating units of these poly-daisy chains contract and extend upon electrical stimulation, and this motion is expected to be transmitted to the polymer itself, resulting in an amplification of the effect. Part II concerns the investigation of rotaxanes and pseduorotaxanes based on heteroditopic calix[6]arenes and cationic guests. In Chapters 8 and 9, novel calix[6]arene macrocycles, functionalized with thiourea or dansyl units, and their related pseudorotaxanes are investigated. In both cases, the calix[6]arene functionalization adds new features to the pseudorotaxane. In Chapters 10 and 11, the influence of orientational isomerism on the properties of [2]- and [3]rotaxanes is investigated. The [3]rotaxanes discussed in Chapter 10 display similar properties, while the [2]rotaxanes described in Chapter 11, characterized by a calix[6]arene and a stilbazolium unit, exhibit distinct photophysical and photochemical properties.
