Illinois law defines criminal history as data identifiable to an individual, consisting of descriptions or notations of arrests, detentions, indictments, information, pretrial proceedings, trials, or other formal events plus descriptions of criminal charges and disposition including sentencing, court or correctional supervision, rehabilitation and release. Criminal history systems contain data on an offender's interactions with the criminal justice system, which since July 2, 1931 has been maintained by the Illinois Bureau of Identification (BOI). BOI is currently under the Illinois State Police, Division of Administration.
