Building surveying is fragmenting into specialist areas that will in time displace the profession and contribute to its demise. For the profession to survive it must change and embrace these new areas as part of the building surveying family. The research identified 18 ingredients of successful professional bodies that the Australian Institute of Building Surveyors can use to position the organisation to accommodate these new areas and assist it to prosper and grow into an effective professional body.

For these performances, the new Design Hub building will play the role of architectural surrounds used as spatial research devices, architectural agent and collaborator – by giving the building our attention we aim to bring it and its affordances explicitly into the collective body. In exploring the set of interlinked spaces in the Hub (with an emphasis, we propose, on the stairs) as “elaborately structured pretexts for action” , we anticipate that the beginnings of an approach may emerge and allow us to understand that when a person “flexes her muscles, a person [also] flexes her surroundings”. Arakawa and Gins offer ways to assist us in approaching architecture as a tentative constructing toward a holding in place – in which all modes of sensing and scales of action are exercised – through their notions of ‘architectural surround’ and ‘architectural body’ garnered from chapters ‘Notes for an Architectural Body’ and ‘Architectural Surround’ (Gins and Arakawa, 2002).

The two collaborative installations are part of the Building Movements event and aim to generate a shared ‘body of actions’. We are proposing to emphasise attention to constructed environments (buildings, clothes, landscapes…) as active participants in ecologies of lived experience, with particular interest in how we can more explicitly approach our environments as spatial research devices, i.e. how constructed environments can offer key questions and provocations in any research enquiry.

This paper reports on a two-year study of tertiary education students’ perceptions of written feedback on assessment. Contextualised in a regional Australian university and drawing on a cohort of Master of Teaching pre-service teachers, a survey approach was used to collect data from participants in both years of their graduate-level entry program. The paper contributes to the emerging body of literature on students’ perceptions of written feedback on assessment by discussing four themes that emerged from the study. It concludes with a number of recommendations for teacher educators to enhance current feedback practices.

BACKGROUND: Fiscal strategies are increasingly considered upstream nutrition promotion measures. However, few trials have investigated the effectiveness or cost effectiveness of pricing manipulations on diet in real-world settings. OBJECTIVE: We assessed the effects on fruit, vegetable, and beverage purchasing and consumption of a 20% price-reduction intervention, a tailored skills-based behavior-change intervention, and a combined intervention compared with a control condition. DESIGN: The Supermarket Healthy Eating for Life trial was a randomized controlled trial conducted over 3 mo [baseline (time 1) to postintervention (time 2) with a 6-mo follow-up (time 3)]. Female primary household shoppers in Melbourne, Australia, were randomly assigned to a 1) skill-building (n = 160), 2) price-reduction (n = 161), 3) combined skill-building and price-reduction (n = 160), or 4) control (n = 161) group. Supermarket transaction data and surveys were used to measure the following study outcomes: fruit, vegetable, and beverage purchases and self-reported fruit and vegetable consumption at each time point. RESULTS: At 3 mo (time 2), price reduction-alone participants purchased more total vegetables and frozen vegetables than did controls. Price reduction-alone and price reduction-plus-skill-building participants purchased more fruit than did controls. Relative to controls, in the price-reduction group, total vegetable consumption increased by 233 g/wk (3.1 servings or 15% more than at baseline), and fruit purchases increased by 364 g/wk (2.4 servings; 35% more than at baseline). Increases were not maintained 6 mo postintervention (time 3). Price reduction-alone participants showed a tendency for a slight increase in fruit consumption at time 2 (P = 0.09) that was maintained at time 3 (P = 0.014). No intervention improved purchases of bottled water or low-calorie beverages. CONCLUSIONS: A 20% price reduction in fruit and vegetables resulted in increased purchasing per household of 35% for fruit and 15% for vegetables over the price-reduction period. These findings show that price modifications can directly increase produce purchases. The Supermarket Healthy Eating for Life trial was registered at Current Controlled Trials Registration as ISRCTN39432901.

Piracanjuba (Brycon orbignyanus) is a Brazilian migratory fast-growing omnivore, very appreciated as a sport fish, which is threatened to extinction in Southern Brazil due to stock over exploitation and dam building. Therefore, efforts have been made to raise this fish in captivity for reintroduction and aquaculture purposes. In the present study, the effects of different dietary protein and lipid concentrations on piracanjuba fingerlings growth performance, feed utilization, body composition, hepatosomatic index (HSI) and activity of the lipogenic enzymes fatty acid synthetase (FAS), glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) and malic enzyme (ME) were investigated using a 2 x 3 factorial experiment. Six casein-gelatin based diets were prepared combining two protein (30% and 32%) and three lipid concentrations (5.5%, 8.8% and 12.1%). Eleven fish, average weight 11.30 +/- 0.1 g, were held in each of 18 100-1 aquaria, supplied with recirculating freshwater. Each diet was randomly assigned to triplicate groups of fish and fed to apparent satiation, twice a day for 100 d. Piracanjuba fingerlings' daily weight gain (0.36-0.40 g), specific growth rate (1.43-1.51%), feed utilization and HSI were not influenced by dietary protein or lipid concentration. However, body composition was directly affected by dietary treatment. An increase in body fat and dry matter was observed as dietary lipid increased, for both dietary protein concentrations tested. The activity of FAS was depressed by increasing dietary fat levels but the G6PD activity did not differ among dietary treatments, although ME activity showed some regulation by dietary protein. These results indicate that an increase from 5.5% to 12.1% in the dietary lipid, at a dietary protein concentration of 30% or 32%, promotes body fat accumulation in piracanjuba fingerlings with no improvement in growth, suggesting that the lipid requirement for this species should be 5% or less, when raised for commercial purposes. However, the additional energy reserve from body fat accumulation could be desirable for piracanjuba fingerlings produced for stock enhancement. In this work, the plate bending formulation of the boundary element method (BEM) based on the Reissner's hypothesis is extended to the analysis of zoned plates in order to model a building floor structure. In the proposed formulation each sub-region defines a beam or a slab and depending on the way the sub-regions are represented, one can have two different types of analysis. In the simple bending problem all sub-regions are defined by their middle surface. on the other hand, for the coupled stretching-bending problem all sub-regions are referred to a chosen reference surface, therefore eccentricity effects are taken into account. Equilibrium and compatibility conditions are automatically imposed by the integral equations, which treat this composed structure as a single body. The bending and stretching values defined on the interfaces are approximated along the beam width, reducing therefore the number of degrees of freedom. Then, in the proposed model the set of equations is written in terms of the problem values on the beam axis and on the external boundary without beams. Finally some numerical examples are presented to show the accuracy of the proposed model.

Kralijc’s (1983) purchasing portfolio approach holds that different types of purchases need different sourcing strategies, underpinned by distinct sets of resources and practices. The approach is widely deployed in business and extensively researched, and yet little research has been conducted on how knowledge and skills vary across a portfolio of purchases. This study extends the body of knowledge on purchasing portfolio management, and its application in the strategic development of purchasing in an organization, and on human resource management in the purchasing function. A novel approach to profiling purchasing skills is proposed, which is well suited to dynamic environments which require flexibility. In a survey, experienced purchasing personnel described a specific purchase and profiled the skills required for effective performance in purchasing that item. Purchases were categorized according to their importance to the organization (internally-oriented evaluation of cost and production factors) and to the supply market (externally-oriented evaluation of commercial risk and uncertainty). Through cluster analysis three key types of purchase situations were identified. The skills required for effective purchasing vary significantly across the three clusters (for 22 skills, p<0.01). Prior research shows that global organizations use the purchasing portfolio approach to develop sourcing strategies, but also aggregate analyses to inform the design of purchasing arrangements (local vs global) and to develop their improvement plans. Such organizations would also benefit from profiling skills by purchase type. We demonstrate how the survey can be adapted to provide a management tool for global firms seeking to improve procurement capability, flexibility and performance.

There is a growing societal need to address the increasing prevalence of behavioral health issues, such as obesity, alcohol or drug use, and general lack of treatment adherence for a variety of health problems. The statistics, worldwide and in the USA, are daunting. Excessive alcohol use is the third leading preventable cause of death in the United States (with 79,000 deaths annually), and is responsible for a wide range of health and social problems. On the positive side though, these behavioral health issues (and associated possible diseases) can often be prevented with relatively simple lifestyle changes, such as losing weight with a diet and/or physical exercise, or learning how to reduce alcohol consumption. Medicine has therefore started to move toward finding ways of preventively promoting wellness, rather than solely treating already established illness. Evidence-based patient-centered Brief Motivational Interviewing (BMI) interven- tions have been found particularly effective in helping people find intrinsic motivation to change problem behaviors after short counseling sessions, and to maintain healthy lifestyles over the long-term. Lack of locally available personnel well-trained in BMI, however, often limits access to successful interventions for people in need. To fill this accessibility gap, Computer-Based Interventions (CBIs) have started to emerge. Success of the CBIs, however, critically relies on insuring engagement and retention of CBI users so that they remain motivated to use these systems and come back to use them over the long term as necessary. Because of their text-only interfaces, current CBIs can therefore only express limited empathy and rapport, which are the most important factors of health interventions. Fortunately, in the last decade, computer science research has progressed in the design of simulated human characters with anthropomorphic communicative abilities. Virtual characters interact using humans’ innate communication modalities, such as facial expressions, body language, speech, and natural language understanding. By advancing research in Artificial Intelligence (AI), we can improve the ability of artificial agents to help us solve CBI problems. To facilitate successful communication and social interaction between artificial agents and human partners, it is essential that aspects of human social behavior, especially empathy and rapport, be considered when designing human-computer interfaces. Hence, the goal of the present dissertation is to provide a computational model of rapport to enhance an artificial agent’s social behavior, and to provide an experimental tool for the psychological theories shaping the model. Parts of this thesis were already published in [LYL+12, AYL12, AL13, ALYR13, LAYR13, YALR13, ALY14].

Building and maintaining muscle is critical to the quality of life for adults and elderly. Physical activity and nutrition are important factors for long-term muscle health. In particular, dietary protein – including protein distribution and quality – are under-appreciated determinants of muscle health for adults. The most unequivocal evidence for the benefit of optimal dietary protein at individual meals is derived from studies of weight management. During the catabolic condition of weight loss, higher protein diets attenuate loss of lean tissue and partition weight loss to body fat when compared with commonly recommended high carbohydrate, low protein diets. Muscle protein turnover is a continuous process in which proteins are degraded, and replaced by newly synthesized proteins. Muscle growth occurs when protein synthesis exceeds protein degradation. Regulation of protein synthesis is complex, with multiple signals influencing this process. The mammalian target of rapamycin (mTORC1) pathway has been identified as a particularly important regulator of protein synthesis, via stimulation of translation initiation. Key regulatory points of translation initiation effected by mTORC1 include assembly of the eukaryotic initiation factor 4F (eIF4F) complex and phosphorylation of the 70 kilodalton ribosomal protein S6 kinase (S6K1). Assembly of the eIF4F initiation complex involves phosphorylation of the inhibitory eIF4E binding protein-1 (4E-BP1), which releases the initiation factor eIF4E and allows it to bind with eIF4G. Binding of eIF4E with eIF4G promotes preparation of the mRNA for binding to the 43S pre-initiation complex. Consumption of the amino acid leucine (Leu) is a key factor determining the anabolic response of muscle protein synthesis (MPS) and mTORC1 signaling to a meal. Research from this dissertation demonstrates that the peak activation of MPS following a complete meal is proportional to the Leu content of a meal and its ability to elevate plasma Leu. Leu has also been implicated as an inhibitor of muscle protein degradation (MPD). In particular, there is evidence suggesting that in muscle wasting conditions Leu supplementation attenuates expression of the ubiquitin-proteosome pathway, which is the primary mode of intracellular protein degradation. However, this is untested in healthy, physiological feeding models. Therefore, an experiment was performed to see if feeding isonitrogenous protein sources with different Leu contents to healthy adult rats would differentially impact ubiquitin-proteosome (protein degradation) outcomes; and if these outcomes are related to the meal responses of plasma Leu. Results showed that higher Leu diets were able to attenuate total proteasome content but had no effect on ubiquitin proteins. This research shows that dietary Leu determines postprandial muscle anabolism. In a parallel line of research, the effects of dietary Leu on changes in muscle mass overtime were investigated. Animals consuming higher Leu diets had larger gastrocnemius muscle weights; furthermore, gastrocnemius muscle weights were correlated with postprandial changes in MPS (r=0.471, P<0.01) and plasma Leu (r=0.400, P=0.01). These results show that the effect of Leu on ubiquitin-proteosome pathways is minimal for healthy adult rats consuming adequate diets. Thus, long-term changes in muscle mass observed in adult rats are likely due to the differences in MPS, rather than MPD. Factors determining the duration of Leu-stimulated MPS were further investigated. Despite continued elevations in plasma Leu and associated translation initiation factors (e.g., S6K1 and 4E-BP1), MPS returned to basal levels ~3 hours after a meal. However, administration of additional nutrients in the form of carbohydrate, Leu, or both ~2 hours after a meal was able to extend the elevation of MPS, in a time and dose dependent manner. This effect led to a novel discovery that decreases in translation elongation activity was associated with increases in activity of AMP kinase, a key cellular energy sensor. This research shows that the Leu density of dietary protein determines anabolic signaling, thereby affecting cellular energetics and body composition.
