We consider the problem of minimizing the total completion time on a single batch processing machine. The set of jobs to be scheduled can be partitioned into a number of families, where all jobs in the same family have the same processing time. The machine can process at most B jobs simultaneously as a batch, and the processing time of a batch is equal to the processing time of the longest job in the batch. We analyze that properties of an optimal schedule and develop a dynamic programming algorithm of polynomial time complexity when the number of job families is fixed. The research is motivated by the problem of scheduling burn-in ovens in the semiconductor industry

We study the problem of minimizing total completion time on single and parallel batch processing machines. A batch processing machine is one which can process up to B jobs simultaneously. The processing time of a batch is equal to the largest processing time among all jobs in the batch. This problem is motivated by burn-in operations in the final testing stage of semiconductor manufacturing and is expected to occur in other production environments. We provide an exact solution procedure for the single-machine problem and heuristic algorithms for both single and parallel machine problems. While the exact algorithms have limited applicability due to high computational requirements, extensive experiments show that the heuristics are capable of consistently obtaining near-optimal solutions in very reasonable CPU times.

In this paper we address a scheduling problem for minimising total weighted tardiness. The motivation for the paper comes from the automobile gear manufacturing process. We consider the bottleneck operation of heat treatment stage of gear manufacturing. Real life scenarios like unequal release times, incompatible job families, non-identical job sizes and allowance for job splitting have been considered. A mathematical model taking into account dynamic starting conditions has been developed. Due to the NP-hard nature of the problem, a few heuristic algorithms have been proposed. The performance of the proposed heuristic algorithms is evaluated: (a) in comparison with optimal solution for small size problem instances, and (b) in comparison with `estimated optimal solution' for large size problem instances. Extensive computational analyses reveal that the proposed heuristic algorithms are capable of consistently obtaining near-optimal solutions (that is, statistically estimated one) in very reasonable computational time.

Strategies for efficient start-up of a continuous process for biooxidation of refractory gold ore and concentrate obtained from Hutti, Gold Mines Limited (HGML), India are discussed in this work. The biooxidation of the concentrate at high pulp density (10%) with wild strain of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans isolated from HGML mines is characterized by significant lag phase (20 days) and incomplete oxidation (35%) even after prolonged operation (60 days). Two strategies, biooxidation with concentrate adapted cells and a step leaching strategy, in which the pulp density is progressively increased from 2% to 10% were considered and the latter resulted in efficient biooxidation of concentrate. Conversion of such a process from batch to continuous operation is shown to result in complete biooxidation of the concentrate and gold extraction efficiency in excess of 90%. Transaction processing is a key constituent of the IT workload of commercial enterprises (e.g., banks, insurance companies). Even today, in many large enterprises, transaction processing is done by legacy "batch" applications, which run offline and process accumulated transactions. Developers acknowledge the presence of multiple loosely coupled pieces of functionality within individual applications. Identifying such pieces of functionality (which we call "services") is desirable for the maintenance and evolution of these legacy applications. This is a hard problem, which enterprises grapple with, and one without satisfactory automated solutions. In this paper, we propose a novel static-analysis-based solution to the problem of identifying services within transaction-processing programs. We provide a formal characterization of services in terms of control-flow and data-flow properties, which is well-suited to the idioms commonly exhibited by business applications. Our technique combines program slicing with the detection of conditional code regions to identify services in accordance with our characterization. A preliminary evaluation, based on a manual analysis of three real business programs, indicates that our approach can be effective in identifying useful services from batch applications.
Minimizing total weighted tardiness on heterogeneous batch processors with incompatible job families

In this paper, we address a scheduling problem for minimizing total weighted tardiness. The background for the paper is derived from the automobile gear manufacturing process. We consider the bottleneck operation of heat treatment stage of gear manufacturing. Real-life scenarios like unequal release times, incompatible job families, nonidentical job sizes, heterogeneous batch processors, and allowance for job splitting have been considered. We have developed a mathematical model which takes into account dynamic starting conditions. The problem considered in this study is NP-hard in nature, and hence heuristic algorithms have been proposed to address it. For real-life large-size problems, the performance of the proposed heuristic algorithms is evaluated using the method of estimated optimal solution available in literature. Extensive computational analyses reveal that the proposed heuristic algorithms are capable of consistently obtaining near-optimal statistically estimated solutions in very reasonable computational time.

The methane hydration process is investigated in a semi-continuous stirred tank reactor. Liquid temperatures and reaction rates without stirrer are compared with those occurring with stirrer, while at the same time better stirring conditions of the methane hydration process are given by the experiments. Some basic data of fluid mechanics, for example, stirring Reynolds number, Froucle number and stirrer power, are calculated during the methane hydration process, which can be applied to evaluate stirrer capacity and provide some basic data for a scaled up reactor. Based on experiment and calculations in this work, some conclusions are drawn. First, the stirrer has great influence on the methane hydration process. Batch stirring is helpful to improve the mass transfer and heat transfer performances of the methane hydration process. Second, induction time can be shortened effectively by use of the stirrer. Third, in this paper, the appropriate stirring velocity and stirring time were 320 rpm and 30 min, respectively, at 5.0 MPa, for which the storage capacity and reaction time were 159.1 V/V and 370 min, respectively. Under the condition of the on-flow state, the initial stirring Reynolds number of the fluid and the stirring power were 12,150 and 0.54 W, respectively. Fourth, some suggestions, for example, the use of another type of stirrer or some baffles, are proposed to accelerate the methane hydration process. Comparing with literature data, higher storage capacity and hydration rate are achieved in this work. Moreover, some fluid mechanics parameters are calculated, which can provide some references to engineering application.

We have developed a two-stage growth one-step process for cultivation of Haematococcus using a self-designed system that mimics an open pond in the natural environment. The characteristics of this process are green vegetative cell growth and cysts transformation and pigment accumulation that proceed spontaneously and successively in one open photobioreactor. Four strains of Haematococcus (H. pluvialis 26; H. pluvialis 30; H. pluvialis 34; H. pluvialis WZ) were cultured in this imitation system for a duration of 12 days. The changes in cell density and medium pH were closely monitored, and the astaxanthin content and yield of the four Haematococcus strains were measured at the end of 12 days of cultivation. Two of the strains, H. pluvialis 26 and H. pluvialis WZ, were selected as strains suitable for mass culture, resulting in the astaxanthin yield of 51.06 and 40.25 mg L-1 which are equivalent to 2.79 and 2.50% of their dry biomass respectively. Based on the laboratory work, 6 batch cultures of H. pluvialis WZ were conducted successfully to produce astaxanthin in two 100 m(2) open race-way pond by two-stage growth one-step process. The astaxanthin content ranged from 1.61 to 2.48 g 100 g(-1) dry wt., with average astaxanthin content of 2.10 g 100 g(-1) dry wt. Compared with the one-stage production of astaxanthin based on continuous culture, the superiority of our process is that it can accumulate much more astaxanthin in red cysts. Compared with two-stage production of astaxanthin, the advantage of our process is that it does not need to divide the production process into two parts using two bioreactors. The presented work demonstrates the feasibility for producing astaxanthin from Haematococcus using a two-stage growth one-step process in open pond, culture systems that have been successfully used for Spirulina and Chlorella mass culture. The future of Haematococcus astaxanthin production has been also discussed. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Batch cultivation for transgenic kelp gametophyte cells was investigated in an online controlled 5 L stirred-tank photo-bioreactor to rapidly optimize the process conditions by monitoring the rate of increase of pH. The transgenic kelp gametophytes with heterologous gene encoding hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) could rapidly grow in the bioreactor. Optimal temperature and agitation rate for bioreactor cultivation of gametophytes were 15 degrees C and 200 rpm. Optimal incident light intensities depended on the initial cell densities. Segregation or de-blending of bulk particulates is a problem that is encountered in many industrial sectors. The magnitude of segregation can often determine whether a complete production batch can be transferred for onward processing within the plant or released to market. It is a phenomenon that impacts directly upon the profitability of a process. Segregation can occur through a coincidence of a range of variables that relate to the process and bulk particulate properties, common mechanisms for this include; percolation, surface effect (rolling) and elutriation. The importance to industry of predicting the sensitivity of bulk particulates to segregation cannot be under-estimated, and to this end various test procedures have been developed. Within many industries striving to improve product quality and reduce wastage, the determination of variability in blend consistency caused by segregation is an increasing priority. This paper considers recent work undertaken to evaluate the effects of multiple handling operations on the degree of segregation that results. The bulk properties of segregability (and resulting flowability) can not only influence the product consistency, but can have great influence over the process (production) control and performance.

Aqueous solutions of a chlorinated VOC, 3,4-dichlorobut-1-ene, as well as other pollutants, may be mineralised to carbon dioxide, water and hydrochloric acid using a sealed rotating photocatalytic reactor. The effect of pH, dissolved oxygen concentration, light intensity, pollutant concentration and rotation speed on the degradation rate have been investigated as well as competition kinetics with methanol. This reactor may be optimised to minimise competition effects in mixed solutions. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Herein batch and continuous mesophilic anaerobic digestion of grass silage liquor was studied. The continuous process was carried out in Armfield digesters with an OLR ranging from 0.851 to 1.77 kg COD m-3 day-1. The effect of recirculation of effluent from the digester was investigated using different OLRs of grass silage liquor feed. These results showed that as the OLR increased, the methane yield decreased for the reactor with no recycle and increased for the reactor with recycle. However, the COD removal for both digesters was nearly the same at the same OLR. Overall these studies show that grass silage liquor can produce a high quality methane steam between 70% and 80% and achieve methane yields of 0.385 m3 kg-1 COD.

The effects of four process factors: pH, emulsifier (gelatin) concentration, mixing and batch, on the % w/w entrapment of propranolol hydrochloride in ethylcellulose microcapsules prepared by the solvent evaporation process were examined using a factorial design. In this design the minimum % w/w entrapments of propranolol hydrochloride were observed whenever the external aqueous phase contained 1.5% w/v gelatin at pH 6.0 (0.71-0.91% w/w) whereas maximum entrapments occurred whenever the external aqueous phase was composed of 0.5% w/v gelatin at pH 9.0,(8.9-9.1% w/w). The theoretical maximum loading was 50% w/w. Statistical evaluation of the results by analysis of variance showed that emulsifer (gelatin) concentration and pH, but not mixing and batch significantly affected entrapment. An interaction between pH and gelatin concentration was observed in the factorial design which was accredited to the greater effect of gelatin concentration on % w/w entrapment at pH 9.0 than at pH 6.0. Maximum theoretical entrapment was achieved by increasing the pH of the external phase to 12.0. Marked increases in drug entrapment were observed whenever the pH of the external phase exceeded the pK(2) of propranolol hydrochloride. It was concluded that pH, and hence ionisation, was the greatest determinant of entrapment of propranolol hydrochloride into microcapsules prepared by the solvent evaporation process.

This paper explores the performance of sliding-window based training, termed as semi batch, using multilayer perceptron (MLP) neural network in the presence of correlated data. The sliding window training is a form of higher order instantaneous learning strategy without the need of covariance matrix, usually employed for modeling and tracking purposes. Sliding-window framework is implemented to combine the robustness of offline learning algorithms with the ability to track online the underlying process of a function. This paper adopted sliding window training with recent advances in conjugate gradient direction with application of data store management e.g. simple distance measure, angle evaluation and the novel prediction error test. The simulation results show the best convergence performance is gained by using store management techniques. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.
