Abstract: A strategy that is often used for designing low band gap polymers involves the incorporation of electron-rich (donor) and electron-deficient (acceptor) conjugated segments within the polymer backbone. In this paper we investigate such a series of Diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP)-based co-polymers. The co-polymers consisted of a DPP unit attached to a phenylene, naphthalene, or anthracene unit. Additionally, polymers utilizing either the thiophene-flanked DPP or the furan-flanked DPP units paired with the naphthalene comonomer were compared. As these polymers have been used as donor materials and subsequent hole transporting materials in organic solar cells, we are specifically interested in characterizing the optical absorption of the hole polaron of these DPP based copolymers. We employ chemical doping, electrochemical doping, and photoinduced absorption (PIA) studies to probe the hole polaron absorption spectra. While some donor-acceptor polymers have shown an appreciable capacity to generate free charge carriers upon photoexcitation, no polaron signal was observed in the PIA spectrum of the polymers in this study. The relations between molecular structure and optical properties are discussed. Pt/TiO2 sensitized by the cheap and organic ortho-dihydroxyl-9,10-anthraquinone dyes, such as Alizarin and Alizarin Red, achieved a TON of approximately 10 000 (TOF > 250 h−1 for the first ten hours) during >80 hours of visible light irradiation (>420 nm) for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution when triethanolamine was used as the sacrificial donor. The stability and activity enhancements can be attributed to the two highly serviceable redox reactions involving the 9,10-dicarbonyl and ortho-dihydroxyl groups of the anthracene ring, respectively

A strategy to tackle the synthesis of azoporphyrins with unsubstituted terminal meso positions was investigated. It comprised the combination of diaza-Diels–Alder (DADA) reaction of 1,3-dienes with dialkyl azodicarboxylates, decarboxylative hydrolysis of the bis(carbamates), palladium-catalyzed amination of bromoporphyrin precursors, and retro-DADA reactions to release the ultimate targets. The somewhat confused historical results on the DADA reactions of 1,3-cyclohexadiene were clarified, but the hydrolyses yielded extremely air-sensitive amines which decomposed completely in minutes via autooxidation and retro-DADA reaction. With anthracene or 2,3-dimethyl-1,3-butadiene as the diene, the synthesis of azoporphyrin was not achieved but three amino-substituted porphyrins were obtained in moderate yields under mild conditions. The X-ray crystal structures of several of the intermediates and the final aminoanthracene-porphyrin nickel(II) complex were determined.

Novel profluorescent mono- and bis-isoindoline nitroxides linked to naphthalimide and perylene diimide structural cores are described. These nitroxide-fluorophore probes display strongly suppressed fluorescence in comparison to their corresponding non-radical diamagnetic methoxyamine derivs. The perylene-based probe possessing two isoindoline systems tethered through ethynyl linkages was shown to be the most photostable in soln., demonstrating significantly enhanced longevity over the 9,10-bis(phenylethynyl)anthracene fluorophore used in previous profluorescent nitroxide probes.

The design and two-component [2 + 3] self-assembly of a series of new organometallic molecular prisms (3a-d) are described. Assemblies 3a,b incorporate 4,4',4'-tris[ethynyl-trans-Pt(PEt3)(2)]triphenylamine (1a) containing a Pt-ethynyl functionality as tritopic planar acceptor and organic ``clips'' 2a and 2b, respectively [where 2a = 1,3-bis(3-pyridyl)isophthalic amide; 2b= 1,3-bis(ethynyl-3-pyridyl)benzene]. In a complementary approach all organic tritopic planar donor ligand 2c [2c 4,4',4'-tris(4-pyridylethynyl)triphenylamine] was assembled with all organometallic ``clip'', 1,8-bis[{trans-Pt(PEt3) (2)(NO3)}ethynyl]anthracene (1b), to obtain prism 3c. A organometallic carbon-centered acceptor, 1,1,1- tris[4-{trans-Pt(PEt3)(2)(NO3)}ethynylphenyl]ethane (1c), has been prepared, and its prism derivative (3d) using an organic `clip'' is prepared. Assemblies (3a-d) were characterized by multinuclear NMR spectroscopy, electrospray ionization mass spectroscopy, and elemental analysis. 3a-d showed fluorescence behavior in solution, and quenching of fluorescence intensity (3a,3c-d) was noticed upon addition of TNT (2,4,6-trinitrotoluene), a common constituent of many commercial explosives. A thin film of the assembly 3d made by spin coating of a solution of 3 x 10(-5) M in DMF on it 1 cm(2) quartz plate showed fluorescence response to the vapor of TNT.

The Synthesis of three typical polycyclic hydrocarbons (PAH) has been described, wherein the Vilsmeier reaction plays a major role. Vilsmeier reaction of the tetraloll gives the dihydronaphthaldehyde 2 which on cyclodehydration gives the dihydroarene 3. Ita dehydrogenation affords 3-methoxybenz[a]anthracene (4). Vilsmeier reaction on the dimethoxydihydronaphthalene 5 gives the versatile dimethoxydihydronaphthaldehyde 6 which has been converted to the dimethoxybenzo[c]fluorene 7 by direct cyclodehydration and the fulvene 10 by cyclodehydration of allylic alcohol 8 derived from 6 followed by dehydrogenation. The saturated alcohol 12 corresponding to 8 undergoes cyclodehydration to give the dimethoxyhexahydrobenzo[c]phenanthrene (13). Some of the advantages of the Vilsmeier approach to PAH have been pointed out.

Pressurised hot water extraction (PHWE) exploits the unique temperature-dependent solvent properties of water minimising the use of harmful organic solvents. Water is environmentally friendly, cheap and easily available extraction medium. The effects of temperature, pressure and extraction time in PHWE have often been studied, but here the emphasis was on other parameters important for the extraction, most notably the dimensions of the extraction vessel and the stability and solubility of the analytes to be extracted. Non-linear data analysis and self-organising maps were employed in the data analysis to obtain correlations between the parameters studied, recoveries and relative errors. First, pressurised hot water extraction (PHWE) was combined on-line with liquid chromatography-gas chromatography (LC-GC), and the system was applied to the extraction and analysis of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in sediment. The method is of superior sensitivity compared with the traditional methods, and only a small 10 mg sample was required for analysis. The commercial extraction vessels were replaced by laboratory-made stainless steel vessels because of some problems that arose. The performance of the laboratory-made vessels was comparable to that of the commercial ones. In an investigation of the effect of thermal desorption in PHWE, it was found that at lower temperatures (200ºC and 250ºC) the effect of thermal desorption is smaller than the effect of the solvating property of hot water. At 300ºC, however, thermal desorption is the main mechanism. The effect of the geometry of the extraction vessel on recoveries was studied with five specially constructed extraction vessels. In addition to the extraction vessel geometry, the sediment packing style and the direction of water flow through the vessel were investigated. The geometry of the vessel was found to have only minor effect on the recoveries, and the same was true of the sediment packing style and the direction of water flow through the vessel. These are good results because these parameters do not have to be carefully optimised before the start of extractions. Liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) and solid-phase extraction (SPE) were compared as trapping techniques for PHWE. LLE was more robust than SPE and it provided better recoveries and repeatabilities than did SPE. Problems related to blocking of the Tenax trap and unrepeatable trapping of the analytes were encountered in SPE. Thus, although LLE is more labour intensive, it can be recommended over SPE. The stabilities of the PAHs in aqueous solutions were measured using a batch-type reaction vessel. Degradation was observed at 300ºC even with the shortest heating time. Ketones and quinones and other oxidation products were observed. Although the conditions of the stability studies differed considerably from the extraction conditions in PHWE, the results indicate that the risk of analyte degradation must be taken into account in PHWE. The aqueous solubilities of acenaphthene, anthracene and pyrene were measured, first below and then above the melting point of the analytes. Measurements below the melting point were made to check that the equipment was working, and the results were compared with those obtained earlier. Good agreement was found between the measured and literature values. A new saturation cell was constructed for the solubility measurements above the melting point of the analytes because the flow-through saturation cell could not be used above the melting point. An exponential relationship was found between the solubilities measured for pyrene and anthracene and temperature.

A new arrangement to achieve adequate mixing between gas and solid is described. Residence time distribution studies ensured that the behavior of this device actually approaches that of a completely mixed system. The applicability of this device in MT reactors was verified by studying the vapor phase catalytic oxidation of anthracene over vanadium pentoxide.

1,3-Dipolar cycloaddition of an organic azide and an acetylenic unit, often referred to as the ``click reaction'', has become an important ligation tool both in the context of materials chemistry and biology. Thus, development of simple approaches to directly generate polymers that bear either an azide or an alkyne unit has gained considerable importance. We describe here a straightforward approach to directly prepare linear and hyperbranched polyesters that carry terminal propargyl groups. To achieve the former, we designed an AB-type monomer that carries a hydroxyl group and a propargyl ester, which upon self-condensation under standard transesterification conditions yielded a polyester that carries a single propargyl group at one of its chain-ends. Similarly, an AB(2) type monomer that carries one hydroxyl group and two propargyl ester groups, when polymerized under the same conditions yielded a hyperbranched polymer with numerous clickable'' propargyl groups at its molecular periphery. These propargyl groups can be readily clicked with different organic azides, such as benzyl azide, omega-azido heptaethyleneglycol monomethylether or 9-azidomethyl anthracene. When an anthracene chromophore is clicked, the molecular weight of the linear polyester could be readily estimated using both UV-visible and fluorescence spectroscopic measurements. Furthermore, the reactive propargyl end group could also provide an opportunity to prepare block copolymers in the case of linear polyesters and to generate nanodimensional scaffolds to anchor variety of functional units, in the case of the hyperbranched polymer. This article describes two-component charge-transfer interaction mediated organogels (CT-gels) derived from anthracene carboxamides obtained from 2-amino 2-hydroxymethyl-1,3-propanediol (TRIS), and 2,3-dialkoxyanthracenes as donors, with 2,4,7-trinitrofluorenone (TNF) as the common acceptor. We demonstrate the versatility of TNF as an electron acceptor in the formation of these gels. The effect of subtle changes in the donor structure on the gelation ability has been investigated by varying the alkyl chain length in the dialkoxyanthracene donors, and by varying the position of the TRIS substituent in the anthracene carboxamide donors. Distinct differences have been observed in the nature of the CT-gels based on these two kinds of anthracene donors. It has been reported in the literature that 2,3-dialkoxyanthracenes form gels on their own in various aliphatic hydrocarbons and alcohols for linear alkyl chains bearing at least 6mcarbon atoms (C-6). In the present study, it is shown that themCT-complex of these molecules with TNF is able to gel many alcoholic and a few hydrocarbon solvents. Also, in the presence of TNF, the 2,3-dialkoxyanthracenes (C-4-C-5) which were non-gelators on their own at ambient temperatures, form CT-gels in a number of alcohols. The other series of gelators discussed, the anthracene carboxamides, require the mandatory presence of TNF to form gels. This donor-acceptor complex forms gels in various aliphatic alcohols. Interestingly, the formation of these CT-gels requires rapid cooling in most of the cases. Thermal stability studies with both types of CT-gels indicate an optimum stoichiometry of 1 : 1 between the donor and the acceptor. Dynamic rheological experiments reveal these gels as viscoelastic soft materials, with the mechanical strength of these gels depending on the amount of TNF present. This provides a means to tune the strength of the gel by varying the doping concentration of the acceptor.

Dioxins are organic toxicants that are known to impair tooth development, especially dental hard tissue formation. The most toxic dioxin congener is 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD). Further, clinical studies suggest that maternal smoking during pregnancy can affect child s tooth development. One of the main components of tobacco smoke is the group of non-halogenated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), a representative of which is 7,12-dimethylbenz[a]anthracene (DMBA). Tributyltin (TBT), an organic tin compound, has been shown to impair bone mineralization in experimental animals. In addition to exposure to organic toxicants, a well-established cause for enamel hypomineralization is excess fluoride intake. The principal aim of this thesis project was to examine in vitro if, in addition to dioxins, other organic environmental toxicants, like PAHs and organic tin compounds, have adverse effects on tooth development, specifically on formation and mineralization of the major dental hard tissues, the dentin and the enamel. The second aim was to investigate in vitro if fluoride could intensify the manifestation of the detrimental developmental dental effects elicited by TCDD. The study was conducted by culturing mandibular first and second molar tooth germs of E18 NMRI mouse embryos in a Trowell-type organ culture and exposing them to DMBA, TBT, and sodium fluoride (NaF) and/or TCDD at various concentrations during the secretory and mineralization stages of development. Specific methods used were HE-staining for studying cell and tissue morphology, BrdU-staining for cell proliferation, TUNEL-staining for apoptosis, and QPCR, in situ hybridization and immunohistochemistry for the expressions of selected genes associated with mineralization. This thesis work showed that DMBA, TBT, TCDD and NaF interfere with dentin and enamel formation of embryonic mouse tooth in vitro, and that fluoride can potentiate the harmful effect of TCDD. The results suggested that adverse effects of TBT involve altered expression of genes associated with mineralization, and that DMBA and TBT as well as NaF and TCDD together primarily affect dentin mineralization. Since amelogenesis does not start until mineralization of dentin begins, impaired enamel matrix secretion could be a secondary effect. Dioxins, PAHs and organotins are all liposoluble and can be transferred to the infant by breast-feeding. Since doses are usually very low, developmental toxicity on most of the organs is difficult to indentify clinically. However, tooth may act as an indicator of exposure, since the major dental hard tissues, the dentin and the enamel, are not replaced once they have been formed. Thus, disturbed dental hard tissue formation raises the question of more extensive developmental toxicity.

Symmetry?adapted linear combinations of valence?bond (VB) diagrams are constructed for arbitrary point groups and total spin S using diagrammatic VB methods. VB diagrams are related uniquely to invariant subspaces whose size reflects the number of group elements; their nonorthogonality leads to sparser matrices and is fully incorporated into a binary integer representation. Symmetry?adapated linear combinations of VB diagrams are constructed for the 1764 singlets of a half?filled cube of eight sites, the 2.8 million ??electron singlets of anthracene, and for illustrative S?0 systems.

An organic-inorganic composite material is obtained by self-assembly of 2,3-didecyloxy-anthracene (DDOA), an organogelator of butanol, and organic-capped ZnO nanoparticles (NPs). The ligand 3, 2,3-di(6-oxy-n-hexanoic acid)-anthracene, designed to cap ZnO and interact with the DDOA nanofibers by structural similarity, improves the dispersion of the NPs into the organogel. The composite material displays mechanical properties similar to those of the pristine DDOA organogel, but gelates at a lower critical concentration and emits significantly less, even in the presence of very small amounts of ZnO NPs. The ligand 3 could also act as a relay to promote the photo-induced quenching process.

Design and synthesis of three novel 2 + 2] self-assembled molecular rectangles 1-3 via coordination driven self-assembly of predesigned Pd(II) ligands is reported. 1,8-Diethynylanthracene was assembled with trans-Pd(PEt3)(2)Cl-2 in the presence of CuCl catalyst to yield a neutral rectangle 1 via Pd-C bond formation. Complex 1 represents the first example of a neutral molecular rectangle obtained via C-Pd coordination driven self-assembly. A new Pd-2(II) organometallic building block with 180 degrees bite-angle 1,4-bistrans-(ethynyl)Pd(PEt3)(2)(NO3)] benzene (M-2) containing ethynyl functionality was synthesized in reasonable yield by employing Sonagashira coupling reaction. Self-assembly of M-2 with two organic clip-type donors (L-2-L-3) afforded 2 + 2] self-assembled molecular rectangles 2 and 3, respectively L-2 = 1,8-bis(4-pyridylethynyl) anthracene; L-3 = 1,3-bis(3-pyridyl) isophthalamide]. The macrocycles 1-3 were fully characterized by multinuclear NMR and ESI-MS spectroscopic techniques, and in case of 1 the structure was unambiguously determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Incorporation of Pd-ethynyl bonds helped to make the assemblies p-electron rich and fluorescent in nature. Complexes 1-2 showed quenching of fluorescence intensity in solution in presence of nitroaromatics, which are the chemical signatures of many commercially available explosives.

A detailed investigation of viscosity dependence of the isomerization rate is carried out for continuous potentials by using a fully microscopic, self-consistent mode-coupling theory calculation of both the friction on the reactant and the viscosity of the medium. In this calculation we avoid approximating the short time response by the Enskog limit, which overestimates the friction at high frequencies. The isomerization rate is obtained by using the Grote-Hynes formula. The viscosity dependence of the rate has been investigated for a large number of thermodynamic state points. Since the activated barrier crossing dynamics probes the high-frequency frictional response of the liquid, the barrier crossing rate is found to be sensitive to the nature of the reactant-solvent interaction potential. When the solute-solvent interaction is modeled by a 6-12 Lennard-Jones potential, we find that over a large variation of viscosity (eta), the rate (k) can indeed be fitted very well to a fractional viscosity dependence: (k similar to eta(-alpha)), with the exponent alpha in the range 1 greater than or equal to alpha >0. The calculated values of the exponent appear to be in very good agreement with many experimental results. In particular, the theory, for the first time, explains the experimentally observed high value of alpha even at the barrier frequency, omega(b). similar or equal to 9 X 10(12) s(-1) for the isomerization reaction of 2-(2'-propenyl)anthracene in liquid eta-alkanes. The present study can also explain the reason for the very low value of vb observed in another study for the isomerization reaction of trans-stilbene in liquid n-alkanes. For omega(b) greater than or equal to 2.0 X 10(13) s(-1), we obtain alpha similar or equal to 0, which implies that the barrier crossing rate becomes identical to the transition-state theory predictions. A careful analysis of isomerization reaction dynamics involving large amplitude motion suggests that the barrier crossing dynamics itself may become irrelevant in highly viscous liquids and the rate might again be coupled directly to the viscosity. This crossover is predicted to be strongly temperature dependent and could be studied by changing the solvent viscosity by the application of pressure. (C) 1999 American Institute of Physics.
