A new kind of monolithic capillary electrochromatography column with poly(styrene-co-divinylbenzene-co-methacrylic acid) as the stationary phase has been developed. The stationary phase was found to be porous by scanning electron microscopy and the composition of the continuous bed was proved by IR spectroscopy to be the ternary polymer of styrene, divinylbenzene, and methacrylic acid. The effects of operating parameters, such as voltage, electrolyte, and organic modifier concentration in the mobile phase on electroosmotic flow were studied systematically, The retention mechanism of neutral solutes on such a column proved to be similar to that of reversed-phase high performance liquid chromatography. In addition, fast analyses of phenols, chlorobenzenes, anilines, isomeric compounds of phenylenediamine and alkylbenzenes within 4.5 min were achieved.

The oxidation of trimethoxymethane (TMM) (trimethyl orthoformate) in a direct oxidation PBI fuel cell was examined by on-line mass spectroscopy and on-line FTIR spectroscopy. The results show that TMM was almost completely hydrolyzed in a direct oxidation fuel cell which employs an acid doped polymer electrolyte to form a mixture of methylformate, methanol and formic acid. It also found that TMM was hydrolyzed in the presence of water at 120°C even without acidic catalyst. The anode performance improves in the sequence of methanol, TMM, formic acid/methanol, and methylformate solutions. Since formic acid is electrochemically more active than methanol, these results suggest that formic acid is probably a key factor for the improvement of the anode performance by using TMM instead of methanol under these conditions. © 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd. An alternative method for determination of total trans fatty acids expressed as elaidic acid by capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE) under indirect UV detection at 224 nm within an analysis time of 7.5 min was developed. The optimized running electrolyte includes 15.0 mmol L(-1) KH(2)PO(4)/Na(2)HPO(4) buffer (pH similar to 7.0), 4.0 mmol L(-1) SDBS, 8.0 mmol L(-1) Brij35, 45%v/v ACN, 8% methanol, and 1.5% v/v n-octanol. Baseline separation of the critical pair C18-9cis/C18:1-9t: with a resolution higher than 1.5 was achieved using C15:0 as the internal standard. The optimum capillary electrophoresis (CE) conditions for the background electrolyte were established with the aid of Raman spectroscopy and experiments of a 3(2) factorial design. After response factor (R(F)) calculations, the CE method was applied to total trans fatty acid (TTFA) analysis in a hydrogenated vegetable fat (HVF) sample, and compared with the American Oil Chemists` Society (AOCS) official method by gas chromatography (GC). The methods were compared with an independent sample t test, and no significant difference was found between CE and GC methods within the 95% confidence interval for six genuine replicates of TTFA analysis (p-value > 0.05). The CE method was applied to TTFA analysis in a spreadable cheese sample. Satisfactory results were obtained, indicating that the optimized methodology can be used for trans fatty acid determination for these samples.

Pyrolytic graphite electrodes (PGE) were modified into dopamine solutions using phosphate buffer solutions, pH 10 and 6.5, as supporting electrolyte. The modification process involved a previous anodization of the working electrode at +1. 5 V into 0. 1 mol-L-1 NaOH followed by other anodization step, in the same experimental conditions, into dopamine (DA) solutions. pH of the supporting electrolyte performed an important role in the production of a superficial melanin polymeric film, which permitted the simultaneous detection of ascorbic acid (AA), (DA) and uric acid (UA), Delta EAA-DA = 222 mV-, Delta EAA-UA = 360 mV and Delta EDA-UA=138mV, avoiding the superficial poisoning effects. The calculated detection limits were: 1.4 x 10(-6) mol L-1 for uric acid, 1.3x10-(5) molL(-1) for ascorbic acid and 1.1 X 10(-7) mol L-1 for dopamine, with sensitivities of (7.7 +/- 0.5), (0.061 +/- 0.001) and (9.5 +/- 0.05)A mol(-1) cm(-2), respectively, with no mutual interference. Uric acid was determined in urine, blood and serum human samples after dilution in phosphate buffer and no additional sample pre-treatment was necessary. The concentration of uric acid in urine was higher than the values found in blood and serum and the recovery tests (92-102%) indicated that no matrix effects were observed. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. Proton-conducting gel polymer electrolytes based on gelatin plasticized with glycerol and containing acetic acid were investigated, characterized, and applied to electrochromic window. For glycerol contents varying from 7% to 48%, the conductivity of the uniform and predominantly amorphous gel electrolyte was found to follow a Vogel-Tamman-Fulcher behavior with the temperature. Typically, for the electrolyte chosen to make 7 x 2 cm(2) electrochromic smart window with the configuration: glass/fluor-doped tin oxide (FTO)/WO(3)/gelatin electrolyte/CeO(2)-TiO(2)/FTO/glass and containing 28% of glycerol, the conductivities were found to be of the order of 5 x 10(-5) S/cm at room temperature and 3.6 x 10(-4) S/cm at 80 A degrees C. The device was characterized by spectroelectrochemical techniques and was tested up to 10,000 cycles showing a fast coloring/bleaching behavior, where the coloring process was achieved in 10 s and the bleaching in 2 s. The transmission variation at the wavelength of 550 nm was about 15%. The cyclic voltammograms showed a very good reversibility of the cathodic/anodic processes, and the charge density was about 3.5 mC/cm(2). The memory tests showed that the transmittance in the colored state increased by 8% in 90 min after removing the potential.

The electro-oxidation of ethanol on platinum in phosphoric acid opens the door to promote the oxidation reaction at higher temperatures. However, the effect of the presence of water is not well understood. In this work, the electro-oxidation of ethanol on platinum was studied in concentrated phosphoric acid containing different concentrations of water at room temperature. The results show that effect of bulk water on the rate electro-oxidation is highest at 0.60 V and decreases for increasing potentials. This was suggested as due to the increasing formation of oxygenated species on the electrode surface with potential, which in turn is more efficient than the increase of water content in the electrolyte. Altogether, these results were interpreted as an evidence of a Langmuir-Hinshelwood step involving oxygenated species as one of the adsorbed partners. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Many factors can affect the quality of diesel oil, in particular the degradation processes that are directly related to some organosulfur compounds. During the degradation process, these compounds are oxidized into their corresponding sulfonic acids, generating a strong acid content during the process. p-Toluene sulfonic acid analysis was performed using the linear sweep voltammetry technique with a platinum ultramicroelectrode in aqueous solution containing 3 mol L(-1) potassium chloride. An extraction step was introduced prior to the voltammetric detection in order to avoid the adsorption of organic molecules, which inhibit the electrochemical response. The extraction step promoted the transference of sulfonic acid from the diesel oil to an aqueous phase. The method was accurate and reproducible, with detection and quantification limits of 5 ppm and 15 ppm, respectively. Recovery of sulfonic acid was around 90%.

The electrochemical redox behavior of usnic acid, mainly known for its antibiotic activity, has been investigated using cyclic, differential pulse and square wave voltammetry in aqueous electrolyte. These studies were carried out by solid state voltammetry with the solid mechanically attached on the surface of a glassy carbon electrode and at different pH values. Usnic acid did not present any reduction reaction. The pH-dependent electrochemical oxidation occurs in three steps, one electron and one proton irreversible processes, assigned to each of the hydroxyl groups in the molecule. Adsorption of the non-electroactive oxidation product was also observed, blocking the electrode surface. An oxidation mechanism was proposed and electroanalytical methodology was developed to determine usnic acid.

Background. The metabolic and electrolyte changes were evaluated after various durations of cold and warm ischemia times to correlate ASA status with hemodynamic changes that may affect the severity of the reperfusion syndrome.Patients and methods. Sixty-one patients who underwent liver transplantation (OLT) were monitored by arterial pH, PaO2, PaCO2, HCO3, BE, K+, Ca2+, Na+, GL, and serial Ht at three specific times: after the skin incision (baseline), 10 minutes before reperfusion (T-2), and 10 minutes after reperfusion (T-3). Changes in metabolic parameters were correlated with ASA status, hemodynamic changes, time of OLT, as well as cold and warm ischemia times.Results. The pH in ASA IV patients was significantly lower at T-1 and T-3, and PCO2 higher in ASA V at T-1. A significant correlation was observed between pH, PaCO2, HCO3 BE, Na+, Ca2+, and glucose with the phase of the procedure. The pH and HCO3 decreased significantly from T-1 and T-2, increasing during T-3. Ca2+ fell from T-1 to T-2 increasing in T-3. Mean glucose and sodium levels increase from T-1 to T-3. Mean BE dropped from T-1 to T-2 and increased at T-3 without a significant correlation between the metabolic parameters in any phase of the study and the cold or warm ischemia times. Patients with a high ASA status showed an increased risk for cardiovascular collapse after reperfusion.Conclusions. Patients with advanced ASA status are more prone to metabolic and acid-base disturbances during reperfusion, without any relation to the cold or warm ischemia times. High ASA status shows an increased risk for cardiovascular collapse after reperfusion.

Individually caged male Cobb broilers (24), 44 d of age, were used to evaluate effects of heat stress (1 d of data collection) and dietary electrolyte balance (DEB; Na + K - Cl, mEq/kg from 1 d of age). During summer rearing, mortality was variable, but DEB 240 improved growth, feed conversion ratio, water intake, and waterrfeed ratio vs. DEB 0. The temperature sequence for heat stress was 24 to 32°C in 30 min, 32 to 36°C in 30 min, 36 to 37°C in 15 min, and 37 to 41°C in 45 min. Maximum temperature was held for 15, 60, 90, or 360 min for data collection (relative humidity averaged 42 ± 7%). Results from the same room before and after heat stress were analyzed by DEB (1-factor ANOVA) and before vs. after heat stress compared across DEB (2-sample t-test). Heat stress decreased blood Na, K, and pCO2, and lymphocytes but increased heterophils. Blood HCO3 rose, Cl declined, and hematocrit gave a concave pattern (lowest at DEB 120) as DEB increased. After heat stress, DEB O decreased blood Na and K, and DEB O and 120 levels decreased blood HCO3. After heat stress blood pCO2 and hemoglobin decreased with DEB 240, but it had highest pCO2, a key factor. The DEB 120 gave longest times to panting and prostration with DEB O and 240 results lower but similar statistically. In heat stress, DEB 360 was excessive, DEB 120 and 240 were favorable, and DEB 0 was intermediate based on hematology, panting, and prostration responses.

In the present work, aquatic humic substances (HS) were extracted by use of adsorbent XAD 8 and the acid humic fraction (AH) was separated throught acidification. After being purified by Hyphan resin and dialyze, the aquatic AH was characterized using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and elemental analysis. The influence of the aquatic HA and electrolyte concentrations, pH and aquatic AH-metal complexation time on the conformation was investigated using UV/Vis spectroscopic studies, employing the equation suggested by Doty and Steiner. The results indicated that the acid humic flexible macromolecule assumes a condensed form at acid and alkaline pH. Other factors favoring condensed conformations are longer metal complexation time (ageing) and higher aquatic AH and electrolyte concentrations. Thus considering the strong influence of the investigated parameters in the structural conformation of the humic macromolecule, we conclude that studies using UV/Vis spectroscopy to estimate the concentration, aromaticity, humification degree of the aquatic AH and so on, require rigorous control over the experimental conditions employed to provide a correct interpretation of the analytical results. ©2006 Sociedade Brasileira de Química.

This study compared acid-base and biochemical changes and quality of recovery in male cats with experimentally induced urethral obstruction and anesthetized with either propofol or a combination of ketamine and diazepam for urethral catheterization. Ten male cats with urethral obstruction were enrolled for urethral catheterization and anesthetized with either ketamine-diazepam (KD) or propofol (P). Lactated Ringer's solution was administered by intravenous (IV) beginning 15 min before and continuing for 48 h after relief of urethral obstruction. Quality of recovery and time to standing were evaluated. The urethral catheter was maintained to measure urinary output. Hematocrit (Hct), total plasma protein (TPP), albumin, total protein (TP), blood urea nitrogen (BUN), creatinine, pH, bicarbonate (HCO3-), chloride, base excess, anion gap, sodium, potassium, and partial pressure of carbon dioxide in mixed venous blood (pvCO(2)) were measured before urethral obstruction, at start of fluid therapy (0 h), and at subsequent intervals. The quality of recovery and time to standing were respectively 4 and 75 min in the KD group and 5 and 16 min in the P group. The blood urea nitrogen values were increased at 0, 2, and 8 h in both groups. Serum creatinine increased at 0 and 2 h in cats administered KD and at 0, 2, and 8 h in cats receiving P, although the values were above the reference range in both groups until 8 h. Acidosis occurred for up to 2 h in both groups. Acid-base and biochemical stabilization were similar in cats anesthetized with propofol or with ketamine-diazepam. Cats that received propofol recovered much faster, but the ketamine-diazepam combination was shown to be more advantageous when treating uncooperative cats as it can be administered by intramuscular (IM) injection.
