In cantilevered implant-supported complete prosthesis, the abutments` different heights represent different lever arms to which the abutments are subjected resulting in deformation of the components, which in turn transmit the load to the adjacent bone. The purpose of this in vitro study was to quantitatively assess the deformation of abutments of different heights in mandibular cantilevered implant-supported complete prosthesis. A circular steel master cast with five perforations containing implant replicas (O3.75 mm) was used. Two groups were formed according to the types of alloy of the framework (CoCr or PdAg). Three frameworks were made for each group to be tested with 4, 5.5 and 7 mm abutments. A 100 N load was applied at a point 15 mm distal to the center of the terminal implant. Readings of the deformations generated on the mesial and distal aspects of the abutments were obtained with the use of strain gauges. Deformation caused by tension and compression was observed in all specimens with the terminal abutment taking most of the load. An increase in deformation was observed in the terminal abutment as the height was increased. The use of an alloy of higher elastic modulus (CoCr) also caused the abutment deformation to increase. Trace elements can have a significant effect on the processing and properties of aluminium alloys, including sintered alloys. As little as 0.07 wt% (100 ppm) lead, tin or indium promotes sintering in an Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloy produced from mixed elemental powders. This is a liquid phase sintering system and thin liquid films form uniformly throughout the alloy in the presence of the trace elements, but liquid pools develop in their absence. Analytical transmission electron microscopy indicates that the trace elements are confined to the interparticle and grain boundary regions. The sintering enhancement is attributed to the segregation of the microalloying addition to the liquid-vapour interface. Because the microalloying elements have a low surface tension, they lower the effective surface tension of the liquid. This reduces the wetting angle and extends the spreading of the liquid through the matrix. An improvement in sintering results. (C) 2001 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Science Ltd. Mass balance calculations were performed to model the effect of solution treatment time on A356 and A357 alloy microstructures. Image analysis and electron probe microanalysis were used to characterise microstructures and confirm model predictions. In as-cast microstructures, up to 8 times more Mg is tied up in the pi-phase than in Mg2Si. The dissolution of pi is accompanied by a corresponding increase in the amount of beta-phase. This causes the rate of pi dissolution to be limited by the rate of beta formation. It is predicted that solution treatments of the order of tens of minutes at 540degreesC produce near-maximum T6 yield strengths, and that Mg contents in excess of 0.52 wt% have no advantage.

The forging characteristics of an Al-Cu-Mg-Si-Sn alloy are examined using it new testing strategy which incorporates a double truncated cone specimen and finite element modelling. This sample geometry produces controlled strain distributions within a single specimen and can readily identify the specific strain required to achieve a specific microstructural event by matching the metallographic data with the strain profiles calculated from finite element software, The friction conditions were determined using the conventional friction ring test, which was evaluated using finite element software. The rheological properties of the alloy, evaluated from compression testing of right cylinders, are similar to the properties of conventional aluminium forgings. A hoop strain develops at the outer diameter of the truncated cones and this leads to pore opening at the outer few millimetres. The porosity is effectively removed when the total strain equals the net compressive strain. The strain profiles that develop in the truncated cones are largely independent of the processing temperature and the strain rate although the strain required for pore closure increases as the forging temperature is reduced. This suggests that the microstructure and the strain rate sensitivity may also be important factors controlling pore behaviour. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

A new technique of surface modification by diffusion coating for AZ91D alloy was developed. A 1.0-2.0-mm alloy layer, which has hardness four to five times higher than the substrate metal, was formed after the treatment. Consequent solution treatment and aging could further improve the hardness of the alloy layer. Microstructure and chemical composition were investigated using optical microscope and electron probe.

Os iogurtes simbióticos, que combinam microrganismos probióticos e substâncias prebióticas, adicionados de polpa de frutas são uma tendência crescente no mercado. O fruto açaí (Euterpe edulis) se destaca pela presença de compostos bioativos, como as antocianinas. Neste contexto, o presente trabalho teve como objetivo caracterizar e avaliar os parâmetros físico-químicos e a viabilidade microbiológica de iogurte simbiótico de açaí enriquecido com inulina e adicionado de cultura probiótica de Bifidobacterium animallis subsp. lactis BB-12. As formulações de iogurte atenderam aos requisitos físico-químicos exigidos pela IN no 46/2007 do MAPA apresentando teor de cinzas de 0,86 % ± 0,10, extrato seco total de 23,18 % ± 2,59, teor de gordura de 4,16 % ± 0,31, acidez de 0,70 % ± 0,05 e pH de 4,45 ± 0,10. Entre as formulações o conteúdo fenólico total variou de 18,17 a 117,84 mg de AGE/100 g, teor de antocianinas de 1,92 a 47,88 mg/100 g e atividade antioxidante de 0,71 a 6,95 μmol Trolox/g, observando-se um aumento de acordo com o aumento do teor de polpa de açaí adicionada. Ao final de 28 dias de armazenamento a 5 °C, observou-se uma redução no teor de antocianinas e da atividade antioxidante. Verificou-se a contribuição positiva da polpa de açaí na viabilidade das bactérias láticas totais, cujas contagens variaram de 4,56 a 7,04 log UFC.g-1 e de B. lactis BB-12 que variou de 3,17 a 6,34 log UFC.g-1, favorecendo a multiplicação dessas bactérias nos iogurtes. Nas formulações com 20 e 25 % de polpa de açaí as contagens das bactérias láticas totais e probiótica mantiveram-se viáveis de acordo com a IN no 46/2007 do MAPA e a Lista de Alegação de Propriedade Funcional (Anvisa), durante os 28 dias de armazenamento a 5 oC. Concluiu-se que a adição de polpa de açaí E. edulis, inulina e B. lactis BB-12 foi tecnologicamente viável na elaboração de iogurte simbiótico de açaí, sendo uma excelente alternativa de diversificação do produto no mercado.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi analisar a dinâmica do mercado de açaí fruto no Estado do Pará, no período de 1994 a 2009, mediante a estimação simultânea da demanda e da oferta, pelo Método de Momentos Generalizados (MMG). Os resultados mostraram que a demanda e a oferta são inelásticas a preço. A elasticidade cruzada indicou que as outras frutas comercializadas no mercado paraense são substitutas do açaí. A elasticidade renda, com valor igual a 2,36, revelou que o açaí está enquadrado na categoria de bens de luxo. A elasticidade custo mostrou que o salário rural é fator de forte influência na redução da oferta do açaí, porque o sistema de produção é fortemente dependente de mão de obra. Por fim, a elasticidade de ajustamento mostrou que a produção de açaí de um ano exerce significativa influência no ajuste da oferta da safra do ano seguinte.

RESUMO O objetivo deste trabalho foi calcular os benefícios socioeconômicos gerados pela adoção das novas tecnologias, no cultivo racional do açaí, no Estado do Pará, no período de 2001 a 2009. Utilizou-se o resultado das equações de demanda e oferta do açaí, estimadas por Nogueira (2011), com a finalidade de se obterem as elasticidades-preço da demanda e da oferta, para, assim, se aferirem os retornos sociais e econômicos da adoção de novas tecnologias sobre a economia do mercado de açaí no Estado. Os resultados mostraram que, a partir de 2001, com a adoção de tecnologias inovadoras no cultivo racional do fruto, houve substancial aumento do benefício socioeconômico para a população paraense. Esse benefício atingiu o patamar de R$ 25.763,79 mil, o que representou um incremento de 48,78% em relação ao benefício obtido antes da adoção das novas tecnologias (R$ 13.195,50 mil). Com relação à distribuição dos benefícios, os consumidores foram os principais beneficiários, com 71,86% dos benefícios totais.

The fatty acid profile of erythrocyte membranes has been considered a good biomarker for several pathologic situations. Dietary intake, digestion, absorption, metabolism, storage and exchange amongst compartments, greatly influence the fatty acids composition of different cells and tissues. Lipoprotein and hepatic lipases were also involved in fatty acid availability. In the present work we examined the correlations between fatty acid in Red Blood Cells (RBCs) membranes, the fatty acid desaturase and elongase activities, glycaemia, blood lipids, lipoproteins and apoproteins, and the endothelial lipase (EL) mass in plasma. Twenty one individuals were considered in the present study, with age >18 y. RBCs membranes were obtained and analysed for fatty acid composition by gas chromatography. The amount of fatty acids (as percentage) were analysed, and the ratios between fatty acid 16:1/16:0; 18:1/18:0; 18:0/16:0; 22:6 n-3/20:5 n-3 and 20:4 n-6/18:2 n-6 were calculated. Bivariate analysis (rs) and partial correlations were determined. SCD16 estimation activity correlated positively with BMI (rs=0.466, p=0.043) and triacylglycerols (TAG) (rs=0.483, p=0.026), and negatively with the ratio ApoA1/ApoB (rs=-0.566, p=0.007). Endothelial lipase (EL) correlated positively with the EPA/AA ratio in RBCs membranes (rs=0.524, p=0.045). After multi-adjustment for BMI, age, hs-CRP and dietary n3/n6 ratio, the correlations remained significant between EL and EPA/AA ratio. At the best of our knowledge this is the first report that correlated EL with the fatty acid profile of RBCs plasma membranes. The association found here can suggest that the enzyme may be involved in the bioavailability and distribution of n-3/n-6 fatty acids, suggesting a major role for EL in the pathophysiological mechanisms involving biomembranes’ fatty acids, such as in inflammatory response and eicosanoids metabolites pathways.

Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) Ni-Ti films have attracted much interest as functional and smart materials due to their unique properties. However, there are still important issues unresolved like formation of film texture and its control as well as substrate effects. Thus, the main challenge is not only the control of the microstructure, including stoichiometry and precipitates, but also the identification and control of the preferential orientation since it is a crucial factor in determining the shape memory behaviour. The aim of this PhD thesis is to study the optimisation of the deposition conditions of films of Ni-Ti in order to obtain the material fully crystallized at the end of the deposition, and to establish a clear relationship between the substrates and texture development. In order to achieve this objective, a two-magnetron sputter deposition chamber has been used allowing to heat and to apply a bias voltage to the substrate. It can be mounted into the six-circle diffractometer of the Rossendorf Beamline (ROBL) at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF), Grenoble, France, enabling an in-situ characterization by X-ray diffraction(XRD) of the films during their growth and annealing. The in-situ studies enable us to identify the different steps of the structural evolution during deposition with a set of parameters as well as to evaluate the effect of changing parameters on the structural characteristics of the deposited film. Besides the in-situ studies, other complementary ex-situ characterization techniques such as XRD at a laboratory source, Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy(RBS), Auger electron spectroscopy (AES), cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy (X-TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and electrical resistivity (ER) measurements during temperature cycling have been used for a fine structural characterization. In this study, mainly naturally and thermally oxidized Si(100) substrates, TiN buffer layers with different thicknesses (i.e. the TiN topmost layer crystallographic orientation is thickness dependent) and MgO(100) single crystals were used as substrates. The chosen experimental procedure led to a controlled composition and preferential orientation of the films. The type of substrate plays an important role for the texture of the sputtered Ni-Ti films and according to the ER results, the distinct crystallographic orientations of the Ni-Ti films influence their phase transformation characteristics.

Friction stir welding (FSW) is now well established as a welding process capable of joining some different types of metallic materials, as it was (1) found to be a reliable and economical way of producing high quality welds, and (2) considered a "clean" welding process that does not involve fusion of metal, as is the case with other traditional welding processes. The aim of this study was to determine whether the emission of particles during FSW in the nanorange of the most commonly used aluminum (Al) alloys, AA 5083 and AA 6082, originated from the Al alloy itself due to friction of the welding tool against the item that was being welded. Another goal was to measure Al alloys in the alveolar deposited surface area during FSW. Nanoparticles dimensions were predominantly in the 40- and 70-nm range. This study demonstrated that microparticles were also emitted during FSW but due to tool wear. However, the biological relevance and toxic manifestations of these microparticles remain to be determined.
