Matrix anisotropy is important for long term in vivo functionality. However, it is not fully understood how to guide matrix anisotropy in vitro. Experiments suggest actin-mediated cell traction contributes. Although F-actin in 2D displays a stretch-avoidance response, 3D data are lacking. We questioned how cyclic stretch influences F-actin and collagen orientation in 3D. Small-scale cell-populated fibrous tissues were statically constrained and/or cyclically stretched with or without biochemical agents. A rectangular array of silicone posts attached to flexible membranes constrained a mixture of cells, collagen I and matrigel. F-actin orientation was quantified using fiber-tracking software, fitted using a bi-model distribution function. F-actin was biaxially distributed with static constraint. Surprisingly, uniaxial cyclic stretch, only induced a strong stretch-avoidance response (alignment perpendicular to stretching) at tissue surfaces and not in the core. Surface alignment was absent when a ROCK-inhibitor was added, but also when tissues were only statically constrained. Stretch-avoidance was also observed in the tissue core upon MMP1-induced matrix perturbation. Further, a strong stretch-avoidance response was obtained for F-actin and collagen, for immediate cyclic stretching, i.e. stretching before polymerization of the collagen. Results suggest that F-actin stress-fibers avoid cyclic stretch in 3D, unless collagen contact guidance dictates otherwise.

Widespread approaches to fabricate surfaces with robust micro- and nanostructured topographies have been stimulated by opportunities to enhance interface performance by combining physical and chemical effects. In particular, arrays of asymmetric surface features, such as arrays of grooves, inclined pillars, and helical protrusions, have been shown to impart unique anisotropy in properties including wetting, adhesion, thermal and/or electrical conductivity, optical activity, and capability to direct cell growth. These properties are of wide interest for applications including energy conversion, microelectronics, chemical and biological sensing, and bioengineering. However, fabrication of asymmetric surface features often pushes the limits of traditional etching and deposition techniques, making it challenging to produce the desired surfaces in a scalable and cost-effective manner. We review and classify approaches to fabricate arrays of asymmetric 2D and 3D surface features, in polymers, metals, and ceramics. Analytical and empirical relationships among geometries, materials, and surface properties are discussed, especially in the context of the applications mentioned above. Further, opportunities for new fabrication methods that combine lithography with principles of self-assembly are identified, aiming to establish design principles for fabrication of arbitrary 3D surface textures over large areas. InGaN/GaN quantum dots were grown on the sapphire (0 0 0 1) substrate in a metalorganic chemical vapor deposition system. The morphologies of QDs deposited on different modified underlayer (GaN) surfaces, including naturally as grown, Ga-mediated, In-mediated, and air-passivated ones, were investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM). Photo luminescence (PL) method is used to evaluate optical properties. It is shown that InGaN QDs can form directly on the natural GaN layer. However, both the size and distribution show obvious inhomogeneities. Such a heavy fluctuation in size leads to double peaks for QDs with short growth time, and broad peaks for QDs with long growth time in their low-temperature PL spectra. QDs grown on the Ga-mediated GaN underlayer tends to coalesce. Distinct transform takes place from 3D to 2D growth on the In-mediated ones, and thus the formation of QDs is prohibited. Those results clarify Ga and In's surfactant behavior. When the GaN underlayer is passivated in the air, and together with an additional low-temperature-grown seeding layer, however, the island growth mode is enhanced. Subsequently, grown InGaN QDs are characterized by a relatively high density and an improved Gaussian-like distribution in size. Short surface diffusion length at low growth temperature accounts for that result. It is concluded that reduced temperature favors QD's 3D growth and surface passivation can provide another promising way to obtain high-density QDs that especially suits MOCVD system. Under natural viewing conditions, a single depthful percept of the world is consciously seen. When dissimilar images are presented to corresponding regions of the two eyes, binocular rivalyr may occur, during which the brain consciously perceives alternating percepts through time. How do the same brain mechanisms that generate a single depthful percept of the world also cause perceptual bistability, notably binocular rivalry? What properties of brain representations correspond to consciously seen percepts? A laminar cortical model of how cortical areas V1, V2, and V4 generate depthful percepts is developed to explain and quantitatively simulate binocualr rivalry data. The model proposes how mechanisms of cortical developement, perceptual grouping, and figure-ground perception lead to signle and rivalrous percepts. Quantitative model simulations include influences of contrast changes that are synchronized with switches in the dominant eye percept, gamma distribution of dominant phase durations, piecemeal percepts, and coexistence of eye-based and stimulus-based rivalry. The model also quantitatively explains data about multiple brain regions involved in rivalry, effects of object attention on switching between superimposed transparent surfaces, and monocular rivalry. These data explanations are linked to brain mechanisms that assure non-rivalrous conscious percepts. To our knowledge, no existing model can explain all of these phenomena.

Simultaneous contrast effects have been found across a wide range of visual dimensions. We describe a simultaneous contrast effect - three-dimensional curvature contrast - in which the apparent curvature of a surface defined by shading and texture information is influenced by the curvature of a surrounding surface. The effect is strong and easily measurable. We asked whether the effect depends upon the presence of contrast at the level of the internal representation of surface curvature or whether it could be better explained in terms of local changes in the apparent brightness of regions within the test patches induced by luminance transition at the borders. The experimental results suggest that, whicle these luminance-contrast-induced effects do contribute to the observed changes in perceived curvature, there are additional influences. In particular changes in perceived curvature induced by a pattern of curved patches were eliminated or considerably weakened when the inducing pattern was transformed into a photographic negative, a procedure which disrupts the apparent three-dimensional structure of the surface patches without changing their brightness contrast. This suggests a component of the illusion involves comparisons at the level of representation of surface curvature. The observation that three-dimensional curvature contrast presists when the inducing surfaces are spatially separate from the test surface suggests that shape perception involves global, as well as local, operations.

In this paper, we present new methods for constructing and analysing formulations of locally reacting surfaces that can be used in finite difference time domain (FDTD) simulations of acoustic spaces. Novel FDTD formulations of frequency-independent and simple frequency-dependent impedance boundaries are proposed for 2D and 3D acoustic systems, including a full treatment of corners and boundary edges. The proposed boundary formulations are designed for virtual acoustics applications using the standard leapfrog scheme based on a rectilinear grid, and apply to FDTD as well as Kirchhoff variable digital waveguide mesh (K-DWM) methods. In addition, new analytic evaluation methods that accurately predict the reflectance of numerical boundary formulations are proposed. numerical experiments and numerical boundary analysis (NBA) are analysed in time and frequency domains in terms of the pressure wave reflectance for different angles of incidence and various impedances. The results show that the proposed boundary formulations structurally adhere well to the theoretical reflectance. In particular, both reflectance magnitude and phase are closely approximated even at high angles of incidence and low impedances. Furthermore, excellent agreement was found between the numerical boundary analysis and the experimental results, validating both as tools for researching FDTD boundary formulations.

We describe a novel strategy for in situ fabrication of hierarchical Fe3O4 nanoclusters-GAs. Fe3O4 NCs-GAs deliver excellent rate capability (the reversible capacities obtained were 1442, 392 and 118 mA h g-1 at 0.1C, 12C and 35C rates), and a high reversible capacity of 577 mA h g-1 over 300 cycles at the current density of 5.2 A g-1 (6C).

La mise en registre 3D (opération parfois appelée alignement) est un processus de transformation d’ensembles de données 3D dans un même système de coordonnées afin d’en aligner les éléments communs. Deux ensembles de données alignés ensemble peuvent être les scans partiels des deux vues différentes d’un même objet. Ils peuvent aussi être deux modèles complets, générés à des moments différents, d’un même objet ou de deux objets distincts. En fonction des ensembles de données à traiter, les méthodes d’alignement sont classées en mise en registre rigide ou non-rigide. Dans le cas de la mise en registre rigide, les données sont généralement acquises à partir d’objets rigides. Le processus de mise en registre peut être accompli en trouvant une seule transformation rigide globale (rotation, translation) pour aligner l’ensemble de données source avec l’ensemble de données cible. Toutefois, dans le cas non-rigide, où les données sont acquises à partir d’objets déformables, le processus de mise en registre est plus difficile parce qu’il est important de trouver à la fois une transformation globale et des déformations locales. Dans cette thèse, trois méthodes sont proposées pour résoudre le problème de mise en registre non-rigide entre deux ensembles de données (représentées par des maillages triangulaires) acquises à partir d’objets déformables. La première méthode permet de mettre en registre deux surfaces se chevauchant partiellement. La méthode surmonte les limitations des méthodes antérieures pour trouver une grande déformation globale entre deux surfaces. Cependant, cette méthode est limitée aux petites déformations locales sur la surface afin de valider le descripteur utilisé. La seconde méthode est s’appuie sur le cadre de la première et est appliquée à des données pour lesquelles la déformation entre les deux surfaces est composée à la fois d’une grande déformation globale et de petites déformations locales. La troisième méthode, qui se base sur les deux autres méthodes, est proposée pour la mise en registre d’ensembles de données qui sont plus complexes. Bien que la qualité que elle fournit n’est pas aussi bonne que la seconde méthode, son temps de calcul est accéléré d’environ quatre fois parce que le nombre de paramètres optimisés est réduit de moitié. L’efficacité des trois méthodes repose sur des stratégies via lesquelles les correspondances sont déterminées correctement et le modèle de déformation est exploité judicieusement. Ces méthodes sont mises en oeuvre et comparées avec d’autres méthodes sur diverses données afin d’évaluer leur robustesse pour résoudre le problème de mise en registre non-rigide. Les méthodes proposées sont des solutions prometteuses qui peuvent être appliquées dans des applications telles que la mise en registre non-rigide de vues multiples, la reconstruction 3D dynamique, l’animation 3D ou la recherche de modèles 3D dans des banques de données.

This paper reports on the creation of an interface for 3D virtual environments, computer-aided design applications or computer games. Standard computer interfaces are bound to 2D surfaces, e.g., computer mouses, keyboards, touch pads or touch screens. The Smart Object is intended to provide the user with a 3D interface by using sensors that register movement (inertial measurement unit), touch (touch screen) and voice (microphone). The design and development process as well as the tests and results are presented in this paper. The Smart Object was developed by a team of four third-year engineering students from diverse scientific backgrounds and nationalities during one semester.

The underground scenarios are one of the most challenging environments for accurate and precise 3d mapping where hostile conditions like absence of Global Positioning Systems, extreme lighting variations and geometrically smooth surfaces may be expected. So far, the state-of-the-art methods in underground modelling remain restricted to environments in which pronounced geometric features are abundant. This limitation is a consequence of the scan matching algorithms used to solve the localization and registration problems. This paper contributes to the expansion of the modelling capabilities to structures characterized by uniform geometry and smooth surfaces, as is the case of road and train tunnels. To achieve that, we combine some state of the art techniques from mobile robotics, and propose a method for 6DOF platform positioning in such scenarios, that is latter used for the environment modelling. A visual monocular Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (MonoSLAM) approach based on the Extended Kalman Filter (EKF), complemented by the introduction of inertial measurements in the prediction step, allows our system to localize himself over long distances, using exclusively sensors carried on board a mobile platform. By feeding the Extended Kalman Filter with inertial data we were able to overcome the major problem related with MonoSLAM implementations, known as scale factor ambiguity. Despite extreme lighting variations, reliable visual features were extracted through the SIFT algorithm, and inserted directly in the EKF mechanism according to the Inverse Depth Parametrization. Through the 1-Point RANSAC (Random Sample Consensus) wrong frame-to-frame feature matches were rejected. The developed method was tested based on a dataset acquired inside a road tunnel and the navigation results compared with a ground truth obtained by post-processing a high grade Inertial Navigation System and L1/L2 RTK-GPS measurements acquired outside the tunnel. Results from the localization strategy are presented and analyzed.

Le design d'éclairage est une tâche qui est normalement faite manuellement, où les artistes doivent manipuler les paramètres de plusieurs sources de lumière pour obtenir le résultat désiré. Cette tâche est difficile, car elle n'est pas intuitive. Il existe déjà plusieurs systèmes permettant de dessiner directement sur les objets afin de positionner ou modifier des sources de lumière. Malheureusement, ces systèmes ont plusieurs limitations telles qu'ils ne considèrent que l'illumination locale, la caméra est fixe, etc. Dans ces deux cas, ceci représente une limitation par rapport à l'exactitude ou la versatilité de ces systèmes. L'illumination globale est importante, car elle ajoute énormément au réalisme d'une scène en capturant toutes les interréflexions de la lumière sur les surfaces. Ceci implique que les sources de lumière peuvent avoir de l'influence sur des surfaces qui ne sont pas directement exposées. Dans ce mémoire, on se consacre à un sous-problème du design de l'éclairage: la sélection et la manipulation de l'intensité de sources de lumière. Nous présentons deux systèmes permettant de peindre sur des objets dans une scène 3D des intentions de lumière incidente afin de modifier l'illumination de la surface. De ces coups de pinceau, le système trouve automatiquement les sources de lumière qui devront être modifiées et change leur intensité pour effectuer les changements désirés. La nouveauté repose sur la gestion de l'illumination globale, des surfaces transparentes et des milieux participatifs et sur le fait que la caméra n'est pas fixe. On présente également différentes stratégies de sélection de modifications des sources de lumière. Le premier système utilise une carte d'environnement comme représentation intermédiaire de l'environnement autour des objets. Le deuxième système sauvegarde l'information de l'environnement pour chaque sommet de chaque objet.

Nous proposons de construire un atlas numérique 3D contenant les caractéristiques moyennes et les variabilités de la morphologie d’un organe. Nos travaux seront appliqués particulièrement à la construction d'un atlas numérique 3D de la totalité de la cornée humaine incluant la surface antérieure et postérieure à partir des cartes topographiques fournies par le topographe Orbscan II. Nous procédons tout d'abord par normalisation de toute une population de cornées. Dans cette étape, nous nous sommes basés sur l'algorithme de recalage ICP (iterative closest point) pour aligner simultanément les surfaces antérieures et postérieures d'une population de cornée vers les surfaces antérieure et postérieure d'une cornée de référence. En effet, nous avons élaboré une variante de l'algorithme ICP adapté aux images (cartes) de cornées qui tient compte de changement d'échelle pendant le recalage et qui se base sur la recherche par voisinage via la distance euclidienne pour établir la correspondance entre les points. Après, nous avons procédé pour la construction de l'atlas cornéen par le calcul des moyennes des élévations de surfaces antérieures et postérieures recalées et leurs écarts-types associés. Une population de 100 cornées saines a été utilisée pour construire l'atlas cornéen normal. Pour visualiser l’atlas, on a eu recours à des cartes topographiques couleurs similairement à ce qu’offrent déjà les systèmes topographiques actuels. Enfin, des observations ont été réalisées sur l'atlas cornéen reflétant sa précision et permettant de développer une meilleure connaissance de l’anatomie cornéenne.
