The paper presents a unified picture of the structure of steady one-dimensional shock waves in partially ionized argon in the absence of external electric and magnetic fields. The study is based on a two-temperature three-fluid continuum approach using the Navier-Stokes equations as a model and taking account of nonequilibrium ionization. The analysis of the governing equations is based on the method of matched asymptotic expansions and leads to three layers: (1) a broad thermal layer dominated by electron thermal conduction; (2) an atom-ion shock structured by heavy-particle collisional dissipative mechanisms; and (3) an ionization relaxation layer in which electron-atom inelastic collisions dominate.

Ischemic stroke (IS) is a heterogeneous disease in which outcome is influenced by many factors. The hemostatic system is activated in association with cerebral ischemia, and thus, markers measuring coagulation, fibrinolysis, and vasoactivity could be useful tools in clinical practice. We investigated whether repeated measurements of these markers reveal patterns that might help in evaluating IS patients, including the early diagnosis of stroke subtypes, in estimating prognosis and risk of recurrence, and in selecting a treatment for secondary prevention of stroke. Vasoconstrictor peptide endothelin-1 (ET-1), homocysteine (Hcy), indicators of thrombin formation and activation (prothrombin fragment 1+2/F1+2, thrombin-antithrombin complex/TAT), indicators of plasmin formation and fibrinolysis (tissue plasminogen activator/t-PA, plasminogen activator inhibitor-1/PAI-1, and D-dimer), and natural anticoagulants (antithrombin/AT, protein C/PC, and protein S/PS) were measured in 102 consecutive mild to moderate IS patients on four occasions: on admission and at 1 week, 1 month, and 3 months after stroke, and once in controls. All patients underwent neurological examination and blood sampling in the same session. Furthermore, 42 IS patients with heterozygous factor V Leiden mutation (FVLm) were selected from 740 IS patients without an obvious etiology, and evaluated in detail for specific clinical, laboratory, and radiological features. Measurements of ET-1 and Hcy levels did not disclose information that could aid in the diagnostic evaluation of IS patients. F1+2 level at 3 months after IS had a positive correlation with recurrence of thromboembolic events, and thus, may be used as a predictive marker of subsequent cerebral events. The D-dimer and AT levels on admission and 1 week after IS were strongly associated with stroke severity, outcome, and disability. The specific analysis of IS patients with FVLm more often revealed a positive family history of thrombosis, a higher prevalence of peripheral vascular disease, and multiple infarctions in brain images, most of which were `silent infarcts´. Results of this study support the view that IS patients with sustained activation of both the fibrinolytic and the coagulation systems and increased thrombin generation may have an unfavorable prognosis. The level of activation may reflect the ongoing thrombotic process and the extent of thrombosis. Changes in these markers could be useful in predicting prognosis of IS patients. A clear need exists for a randomized prospective study to determine whether a subgroup of IS patients with markers indicating activation of fibrinolytic and coagulation systems might benefit from more aggressive secondary prevention of IS.

The aim of the study was to examine the influence of school smoking policy and school smoking prevention programs on the smoking behaviour of students in high schools in Prince Edward Island using the School Health Action Planning Evaluation System (SHAPES). A total sample included 13,131 observations of students in grades 10-12 in ten high schools in Prince Edward Island over three waves of data collection (1999, 2000, and 2001). Changes in prevalence of smoking and factors influencing smoking behaviour were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Chi-Square tests. Multi-level logistic regression analyses were used to examine how both school and student characteristics were associated with smoking behaviour (I, II, III, IV). Since students were located within schools, a basic 2-level nested structure was used in which individual students (level 1) were nested within schools (level 2). For grade 12 students, the combination of both school policies and programs was not associated with the risk of smoking and the presence of the new policy was not associated with decreased risk of smoking, unless there were clear rules in place (I). For the grade 10 study, (II) schools with both policies and programs were not associated with decreased risk of smoking. However, the smoking behaviour of older students (grade 12) at a school was associated with younger students’ (grade 10) smoking behaviour. Students first enrolled in a high school in grade 9, rather than grade 10, were at increased risk of occasional smoking. For students who transitioned from grade 10 to 12 (III), close friends smoking had a substantial influence on smoking behaviour for both males and females (III). Having one or more close friends who smoke (Odds Ratio (OR) = 37.46; 95% CI = 19.39 to 72.36), one or more smokers in the home (OR = 2.35; 95% CI = 1.67 to 3.30) and seeing teachers and staff smoking on or near school property (OR=1.78; 95% CI = 1.13 to 2.80), were strongly associated with increased risk of smoking for grade 12 students. Smoking behaviour increased for both junior (Group 1) and senior (Group 2) students (IV). Group 1 students indicated a greater decrease in smoking behaviour and factors influencing smoking behaviour compared to those of Group 2. Students overestimating the percentage of youth their age who smoke was strongly associated with increased likelihood of smoking. Smoking rates showed a decreasing trend (1999, 2000, and 2001). However, policies and programs alone were not successful in influencing smoking behaviour of youth. Rather, factors within the students and schools contextual environment influenced smoking behaviour. Comprehensive approaches are required for school-based tobacco prevention interventions. Centred space vector PWM (CSVPWM) technique is popularly used for three level voltage source inverters. The reference voltage vector is synthesized by time-averaging of the three nearest voltage vectors produced by the inverter. Identifying the three voltage vectors, and calculation of the dwelling time for each vector are both computationally intensive. This paper analyses the process of PWM generation in CSVPWM. This analysis breaks up a three-level inverter into six different conceptual two level inverters in different regions of the fundamental cycle. Control of 3-level inverter is viewed as the control of the appropriate 2-level inverter. The analysis leads to a systematic simplification of the computations involved, finally resulting in a computationally efficient PWM algorithm. This algorithm exploits the equivalence between triangle comparison and space vector approaches to PWM generation. This algorithm does not involve any 3-phase/2-phase or 2-phase/3-phase transformation. This also does not involve any transformation from rectangular to polar coordinates, and vice versa. Further no evaluation of trigonometric functions is necessary. This algorithm also provides for the mitigation of DC neutral point unbalance, and is well suited to digital implementation. Simulation and experimental results are presented.

This paper presents the design and performance analysis of a detector based on suprathreshold stochastic resonance (SSR) for the detection of deterministic signals in heavy-tailed non-Gaussian noise. The detector consists of a matched filter preceded by an SSR system which acts as a preprocessor. The SSR system is composed of an array of 2-level quantizers with independent and identically distributed (i.i.d) noise added to the input of each quantizer. The standard deviation sigma of quantizer noise is chosen to maximize the detection probability for a given false alarm probability. In the case of a weak signal, the optimum sigma also minimizes the mean-square difference between the output of the quantizer array and the output of the nonlinear transformation of the locally optimum detector. The optimum sigma depends only on the probability density functions (pdfs) of input noise and quantizer noise for weak signals, and also on the signal amplitude and the false alarm probability for non-weak signals. Improvement in detector performance stems primarily from quantization and to a lesser extent from the optimization of quantizer noise. For most input noise pdfs, the performance of the SSR detector is very close to that of the optimum detector. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The ambiguous behavior of metal-graphene interface has been addressed in this paper using density functional theory and nonequilibrium Green's function formalism. For the first time, the fundamental chemistry of metal-graphene interface, in particular role of sp-hybridized and sp(2)-hybridized carbon atoms, has been emphasized and discussed in detail in this paper. It was discovered that the sp-hybridized sites at the edge of a graphene monolayer contribute to 40% of current conduction when compared with sp(2)-hybridized atom sites in the graphene-metal overlap region. Moreover, we highlighted the insignificance of an additional metal layer, i.e., sandwiched contact, due to lacking sp-hybridized carbon sites. A fundamental way of defining the contact resistance, while keeping chemical bonding in mind, has been proposed. The bonding insight has been further used to propose the novel ways of interfacing metal with graphene, which results in a 40% reduction in contact resistance.

A theoretical investigation is carried out into the effect of spontaneously generated coherence on the Kerr nonlinearity of general three-level systems of Lambda, ladder, and V-shape types. It is found, with spontaneously generated coherence present, that the Kerr nonlinearity can be clearly enhanced. In the Lambda- and ladder-type systems, the maximal Kerr nonlinearity increases and at the same time enters the electromagnetically induced transparency window as the spontaneously generated coherence intensifies. As for the V-type system, the absorption property is significantly modified and therefore enhanced Kerr nonlinearity without absorption occurs for certain probe detunings. We attribute the enhancement of Kerr nonlinearity mainly to the presence of an extra atomic coherence induced by the spontaneously generated coherence.

The dynamic evolution of a A system coupled by two strong coherent fields is investigated by taking spontaneously generated coherence (SGC) into account. By numericaly simulation, it is shown that the relative phase of the two coherent fields affects significantly the time scale to the coherent population trapping state. In addition, an analytical expression to the evolution rate which is consistent with the numerical results is given. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The control role of the relative phase between the probe and driving fields on the gain and dispersion in an open Lambda-type inversionless lasing system with spontaneously generated coherence (SGC) is investigated. It is shown that the inversionless gain and dispersion are quite sensitive to variation in the relative phase; by adjusting the value of the relative phase, electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT), a high refractive index with zero absorption and a larger inversionless gain can be realized. It is also shown that, in the contributions to the inversionless gain ( absorption) and dispersion, the contribution from SGC is always much larger than that from the dynamically induced coherence for any value of the relative phase. Our analysis shows that variation in the SGC effect will cause the spectrum regions and values of the inversionless gain and dispersion to vary evidently. We also found that, under the same conditions, the values of the inversionless gain and dispersion in the open system are evidently larger than those in the corresponding closed system; EIT occurs in the open system but cannot occur in the closed system.

We studied effects of the relative phase between the probe and driving fields on the absorption and dispersion properties in an open three-level ladder system with spontaneously generated coherence but without incoherent pumping. It is shown that by the phase controlling, switching from absorption to lasing without inversion (LWI) and enhancing remarkablely LWI gain can be realized; large index of refraction with zero absorption and the electromagnetically induced transparency can be obtained. We also find that varying the atomic injection and exit rates has a considerable influence on the phase dependent-absorption property of the probe field, existent of the atomic injection and exit rates gives the necessary condition of the realization of LWI, getting LWI is impossible in the corresponding closed system without incoherent pumping. An ultrafast transient population grating induced by a (1+1)-dimensional, ultrashort dipole soliton is demonstrated by solving the full-wave Maxwell-Bloch equations. The number of lines and the period of the grating can be controlled by the beam waist and the area of the pulse. Of interest is that a polarization grating is produced. A coherent control scheme based on these phenomena can be contemplated as ultrafast transient grating techniques.

Ce3+ ions were introduced into the Er3+/Yb3+ -codoped TeO2-WO3-ZnO glasses, and the effect of Ce3+ on the emission properties at 1.5 mu m band and the upconversion luminescence of Er3+ in the glasses was investigated. With the increasing of Ce3+ concentration, the emission intensity of Er3+ at 1.5 mu m band increases firstly, and then decreases. The optimal doping concentration of Ce3+ is about 2.07 x 10(20)/cm(3). As for the Er3+ emission at 1.5-mu m band, the fluorescence lifetime decreases a little from 3.4ms to 3.0ms, while the full width at half maximum (FWHM) hardly changes with the increase of Cc 3+ concentration. Due to the effective cross relaxation between Ce3+ and Er3+ : Er3+ (I-4(11/2)) + Ce3+ (F-2(5/2)) -> Er3+ (I-4(13/2)) + Ce3+ (F-2(7/2)), the upconversion emission intensity of Er3+ is reduced greatly. But when Ce3+ -doping concentration is too high, the other cross relaxation between Ce3+ and Er3+ : Er3+ (4I(13/2)) + Ce3+ (F-2(5/2)) -> Er3+ (I-4(15/2)) + Ce3+ (F-2(7/2)) happens, which depopulates the I-4(13/2) level of Er3+ and results in the decrease of the emission intensity and fluorescence lifetime of Er3+ at 1.5 mu m band.
