I have compiled CaCO3 mass accumulation rates (MARs) for the period 0-25 Ma for 144 Deep Sea Drilling Project and Ocean Drilling Program drill sites in the Pacific in order to investigate the history of CaCO3 burial in the world's largest ocean basin. This is the first synthesis of data since the beginning of the Ocean Drilling Program. Sedimentation rates, CaCO3 contents, and bulk density were estimated for 0.5 Myr time intervals from 0 to 14 Ma and for 1 Myr time intervals from 14 to 25 Ma using mostly data from Initial Reports volumes. There is surprisingly little coherence between CaCO3 MAR time series from different Pacific regions, although regional patterns exist. A transition from high to low CaCO3 MAR from 23-20 Ma is the only event common to the entire Pacific Ocean. This event is found worldwide. The most likely cause of lowered pelagic carbonate burial is a rising sea-level trend in the early Miocene. The central and eastern equatorial Pacific is the only region with adequate drill site coverage to study carbonate compensation depth (CCD) changes in detail for the entire Neogene. The latitude-dependent decrease in CaCO3 production away from the equator is an important defining factor of the regional CCD, which shallows away from the equatorial region. Examination of latitudinal transects across the equatorial region is a useful way to separate the effects of changes in carbonate production ('productivity') from changes in bottom water chemistry ('dissolution') upon carbonate burial.

Recombinant human papillomavirus (HPV) virus-like particles (VLPs) made from the major capsid protein L1 are promising vaccine candidates for use as vaccines against genital and other HPV infections, and particularly against HPV-16. However, HPV-16 genotype variants have different binding affinities for neutralising mouse Mabs raised against HPV-16 L1 VLPs. This paper analyses, using a panel of well-characterised Mabs, the effects on the antigenicity of various C- and N-terminal deletants of HPV-16 L1 made in insect cells via recombinant baculovirus, of an A → T mutation at residue 266 (A266T), and of a C → G mutation at conserved position 428 (C428G). The effects of these changes on assembly of the variant L1s were studied by electron microscopy. Binding of Mab H16:E70 to A266T was reduced by almost half in comparison to wild type L1. Retention of the C-terminal region 428-483 was critical for the binding of conformation-specific Mabs (H16:V5, H16:E70, H16:U4 and H16:9A) whereas deletion of the nuclear localisation signal (NLS) or the C428G mutation or an N-terminal deletion (residues 2-9) did not affect the antigenicity. The N-terminal deletion resulted in a mixed population of 30 and 55 nm VLPs, which differs from the same construct expressed in Escherichia coli, whereas pentamer aggregates resulted from deletion of the 428-465 region or the C428G mutation. The results have implications both for considering use of single-genotype HPV vaccines, and for design of novel second-generation vaccines. © 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Coring during Ocean Drilling Program and Deep Sea Drilling Project Legs 163, 152, 104, 81, and 38 recovered sequences of altered basalt from North Atlantic seaward-dipping reflector sequences (SDRS) erupted during the initial rifting of Greenland from northern Europe and likely associated with excessive mantle temperatures caused by an impacting mantle plume head. Cr-rich spinel is found abundantly as inclusions and groundmass crystals within the olivine-rich lavas of Hole 917A (Leg 152) cored into the Southeast Greenland SDRS, but only rarely as inclusions within plagioclase in the lavas of the Vøring Plateau SDRS, and it is absent from other cored SDRS lavas from the Rockall Plateau and Southeast Greenland. Eruptive melt compositions determined from inferred, thermodynamically-defined, spinel-melt exchange equilibria indicate that the most primitive melts represented by Hole 917A basalts have Mg/(Mg + Fe2+) at least as high as 0.70 and approach near-primary mantle melt compositions. In contrast, Cr-rich spinels from Hole 338 (Leg 38) lavas on the Vøring Plateau SDRS give evidence for melt with Mg/(Mg + Fe2+) only as high as 0.64. This study underlines that primitive melts similar to those from Hole 917A comprise only a small fraction of the eruptive North Atlantic SDRS melts, and that most SDRS basalts were, in fact, too evolved to have precipitated Cr-rich spinel, with true melt Mg/(Mg + Fe2+) likely below 0.60. The evolved nature of the SDRS basalts implies large amounts of fractionation at the base of the crust or deep within it, consistent with seismic results that indicate an abnormally thick Layer 3 underlying the SDRS.
