This paper considers the attitudes of students in Years 11, 12 and 13 towards French and, in particular, how they view the reasons behind their level of achievement. It reports findings from a small-scale pilot study, conducted in four schools and colleges, involving 83 students in Year 11, 26 in Year 12 and 14 in Year 13. The findings indicate that French is perceived by many Year 11 students to be difficult and uninteresting. These students, furthermore, do not consider that French is of much benefit in terms of their future career. The data suggest that there is a tendency among students in all three year groups to attribute their lack of success in French to their own low ability and to the difficulty of tasks set, which, it is argued, may affect their levels of motivation in a negative way. Few students in the study have any insight into the importance of learning strategies in overcoming difficulties experienced in language learning. Students' attitudes are then discussed in relation to learning strategy training. It is argued that if learners are encouraged to explore the possibility that their achievement in French may be related to the efficacy of the learning strategies they use, rather than to factors such as low ability or task difficulty, their self-concept, motivation and language learning achievements can be enhanced. A brief outline is given of a planned research project which proposes to address these issues further.

Background: Tinea capitis is a common skin disease seen predominantly in children. The standard therapies for this disease are griseofulvin and ketoconazole. Nevertheless, these drugs have drawbacks in that they are only fungistatic and require treatment for at least 6 weeks. Previous studies with oral terbinafine for the treatment of Tinea capitis have shown that this agent is effective when given for 4 weeks, comparable to an 8-week regimen with griseofulvin. To date there is no data on the use of oral terbinafine in Brazilian children. Objectives: To assess the efficacy, safety and tolerability of oral terbinafine in short-term treatments (1-, 2- and 4-week treatment) of Tinea capitis in children. Patients and methods: One hundred and thirty-two children aged 1-14 years were enrolled in this study, but only 107 were considered for the final efficacy analysis. Diagnosis included clinical assessment and examination by Wood's light. Confirmation was obtained by direct microscopy and culture for fungus. Terbinafine dosage (125 or 250 mg/day) was adjusted according to patient weight. Efficacy was evaluated both by clinical and mycological assessment. Safety and tolerability variables included data on adverse reaction and clinical laboratory evaluations. Results: Mycological evaluation in the follow-up visit at week 12 showed negative direct microscopy and culture results in 48.6, 60.5 and 69.7% patients in groups 1-, 2- and 4-week, respectively (n.s.). At week 12, 84.8% patients in group 4-week achieved clinical cure with a significant difference compared to groups 1- and 2-week, 54.3 and 60.5%, respectively (P < 0.01). Adverse reactions were present in 4.8, 6.8 and 10.9% of patients in groups 1-, 2- and 4-week, respectively. Terbinafine was not associated with clinically relevant increases in liver function tests. Conclusions: Terbinafine is an effective, well tolerated and safe antifungal agent for the treatment of Tinea capitis m children. The shorter duration of treatment resulted in lower cure rates. However, it is important to note that depending on the severity of the disease, a 1-week-only treatment can also be effective in this indication.

The behavior of bottomonium state correlators at non-zero temperature, 140.4(β = 6.664) ≤ T ≤ 221(β = 7.280) (MeV), where the transition temperature is 154(9) (MeV), is studied, using lattice NRQCD on 48³ ×12 HotQCD HiSQ action configurations with light dynamical Nf = 2+1 (mu,s/ms = 0.05) staggered quarks. In order to understand finite temperature effects on quarkonium states, zero temperature behavior of bottomonium correlators is compared based on 32⁴ (β = 6.664,6.800 and 6.950) and 48³ ×64 (β = 7.280) lattices. We find that temperature effects on S-wave bottomoniumstates are small but P-wave bottomoniumstates show a noticeable temperature dependence above the transition temperature.

AIM The optimal duration of dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT) following the use of new generation drug-eluting stents is unknown. METHODS AND RESULTS The association between DAPT interruption and the rates of stent thrombosis (ST) and cardiac death/target-vessel myocardial infarction (CD/TVMI) in patients receiving a Resolute zotarolimus-eluting stent (R-ZES) was analysed in 4896 patients from the pooled RESOLUTE clinical programme. Daily acetylsalicylate (ASA) and a thienopyridine for 6-12 months were prescribed. A DAPT interruption was defined as any interruption of ASA and/or a thienopyridine of >1 day; long interruptions were >14 days. Three groups were analysed: no interruption, interruption during the first month, and >1-12 months. There were 1069 (21.83%) patients with a DAPT interruption and 3827 patients with no interruption. Among the 166 patients in the 1-month interruption group, 6 definite/probable ST events occurred (3.61%; all long DAPT interruptions), and among the 903 patients in the >1-12 months (60% occurred between 6 and 12 months) interruption group, 1 ST event occurred (0.11%; 2-day DAPT interruption). Among patients with no DAPT interruption, 32 ST events occurred (0.84%). Rates of CD/TVMI were 6.84% in the 1-month long interruption group, 1.41% in the >1-12 months long interruption group, and 4.08% in patients on continuous DAPT. CONCLUSION In a pooled population of patients receiving an R-ZES, DAPT interruptions within 1 month are associated with a high risk of adverse outcomes. Dual antiplatelet therapy interruptions between 1 and 12 months were associated with low rates of ST and adverse cardiac outcomes. Randomized clinical trials are needed to determine whether early temporary or permanent interruption of DAPT is truly safe. CLINICAL TRIALSGOV IDENTIFIERS NCT00617084; NCT00726453; NCT00752128; NCT00927940.
