With respect to future environmental impact assessment different bottom trawls are presently investigated for their suitability for sampling the fish fauna in potential windpark areas asses. For this purpose the international Baltic Sea Trawl, the Box trawl, two different small beam trawls and small eel fykes were compared on a research cutter in June 2002. The best catchability with the highest abundance of demersal fish species and widest length distribution was obtained with the Box trawl. During another cruise in December 2002 the Box trawl was again compared with the Windpark trawl. As a result the Box trawl performed best, with regard to the overall catchability. However the Windpark Trawl is easier to handle under the conditions onboard small fishing cutters.

Zebrafish (Danio rerio) embryos have been used to quantify the teratogenic potential of environmental samples and harmful substances respectively. The short spawning interval renders this species a good test organism in toxicological research. Due to the transparency of the eggs several lethal and non-lethal endpoints can be detected in parallel after 48 h of embryonic development. Zebrafishembryos have been shown to be sensitive to a number of environmental relevant contaminants, as well as to ex-tracts from polluted sediments

The design, synthesis, and characterization of two novel metalloprotein motifs is presented. The first project involved the design and construction of a protein motif which was programmed to form a tetradentate metal complex upon the addition of metal cations. The overall structure of the motif was based on a ββ super-secondary structure consisting of a flexible peptide sequence flanked by metal binding regions located at the carboxy and amino termini. The metal binding region near the amino terminus was constructed from a reverse turn motif with two metal ligating residues, (2R, 3R)-β-methyl-cysteine and histidine. Selection of the peptide sequence for this region was based on the conformational analysis of a series of tetrapeptides designed to form reverse turns in solution.
The stereospecific syntheses of a series of novel bipyridyl- and phenanthrolylsubstituted amino acids was carried out to provide ligands for the carboxy terminus metal binding region. These residues were incorporated into peptide sequences using solid phase peptide synthesis protocols, and metal binding studies indicated that the metal binding properties of these ligands was dictated by the specific regioisomer of the heteroaromatic ring and the peptide primary sequence.
Finally, a peptide containing optimized components for the metal binding regions was prepared to test the ability of the compound to form the desired intramolecular peptide:metal cation complexes. Metal binding studies demonstrated that the peptide formed monomeric complexes with very high metal cation binding affinities and that the two metal binding regions act cooperatively in the metal binding process. The use of these systems in the design of proteins capable of regulating naturally occurring proteins is discussed.
The second project involved the semisynthesis of two horse heart cytochrome c mutants incorporating the bipyridyl-amino acids at position 72 of the protein sequence. Structural studies on the proteins indicated that the bipyridyl amino acids had a neglible effect on the protein structure. One of the mutants was modified with Ru(bpy)_2^(+2) to form a redox-active protein, and the modified protein was found to have enhanced electron transfer properties between the heme and the introduced metal site.

This work concerns itself with the possibility of solutions, both cooperative and market based, to pollution abatement problems. In particular, we are interested in pollutant emissions in Southern California and possible solutions to the abatement problems enumerated in the 1990 Clean Air Act. A tradable pollution permit program has been implemented to reduce emissions, creating property rights associated with various pollutants.
Before we discuss the performance of market-based solutions to LA's pollution woes, we consider the existence of cooperative solutions. In Chapter 2, we examine pollutant emissions as a trans boundary public bad. We show that for a class of environments in which pollution moves in a bi-directional, acyclic manner, there exists a sustainable coalition structure and associated levels of emissions. We do so via a new core concept, one more appropriate to modeling cooperative emissions agreements (and potential defection from them) than the standard definitions.
However, this leaves the question of implementing pollution abatement programs unanswered. While the existence of a cost-effective permit market equilibrium has long been understood, the implementation of such programs has been difficult. The design of Los Angeles' REgional CLean Air Incentives Market (RECLAIM) alleviated some of the implementation problems, and in part exacerbated them. For example, it created two overlapping cycles of permits and two zones of permits for different geographic regions. While these design features create a market that allows some measure of regulatory control, they establish a very difficult trading environment with the potential for inefficiency arising from the transactions costs enumerated above and the illiquidity induced by the myriad assets and relatively few participants in this market.
It was with these concerns in mind that the ACE market (Automated Credit Exchange) was designed. The ACE market utilizes an iterated combined-value call market (CV Market). Before discussing the performance of the RECLAIM program in general and the ACE mechanism in particular, we test experimentally whether a portfolio trading mechanism can overcome market illiquidity. Chapter 3 experimentally demonstrates the ability of a portfolio trading mechanism to overcome portfolio rebalancing problems, thereby inducing sufficient liquidity for markets to fully equilibrate.
With experimental evidence in hand, we consider the CV Market's performance in the real world. We find that as the allocation of permits reduces to the level of historical emissions, prices are increasing. As of April of this year, prices are roughly equal to the cost of the Best Available Control Technology (BACT). This took longer than expected, due both to tendencies to mis-report emissions under the old regime, and abatement technology advances encouraged by the program. Vve also find that the ACE market provides liquidity where needed to encourage long-term planning on behalf of polluting facilities.

GPI-anchored neurotoxin-like receptor binding proteins, such as lynx modulators, are topologically positioned to exert pharmacological effects by binding to the extracellular portion of nAChRs. These actions are generally thought to proceed when both lynx and the nAChRs are on the plasma membrane. Here, we demonstrate that lynx1 also exerts effects on α4β2 nAChRs within the endoplasmic reticulum. Lynx affects assembly of nascent α4 and β2 subunits, and alters the stoichiometry of the population that reaches the plasma membrane. Additionally, these data suggest that lynx1 alters nAChR stoichiometry primarily through this intracellular interaction, rather than via effects on plasma membrane nAChRs. To our knowledge, these data represent the first test of the hypothesis that a lynx family member, or indeed any GPI-anchored protein, could act within the cell to alter assembly of multi-subunit protein.

This is a two-part thesis concerning the motion of a test particle in a bath. In part one we use an expansion of the operator PLeit(1-P)LLP to shape the Zwanzig equation into a generalized Fokker-Planck equation which involves a diffusion tensor depending on the test particle's momentum and the time.
In part two the resultant equation is studied in some detail for the case of test particle motion in a weakly coupled Lorentz Gas. The diffusion tensor for this system is considered. Some of its properties are calculated; it is computed explicitly for the case of a Gaussian potential of interaction.
The equation for the test particle distribution function can be put into the form of an inhomogeneous Schroedinger equation. The term corresponding to the potential energy in the Schroedinger equation is considered. Its structure is studied, and some of its simplest features are used to find the Green's function in the limiting situations of low density and long time.

This report to the Thames Water Authority and Central Water Planning Unit is on research carried out in conjunction with the Stage 1 Group Pumping Test of five boreholes in the upper Lambourn Group for a period of three months in September, October and November 1975. The aim of the study was to assess the ecological effects of the pumpin g of five bore-holes in the upper Lambourn. That is, to determine how the seasonal sequence of ecological events in the river differed from what would hav e occurred had no pumping taken place. Since this 'experiment' has no control it is not possible to make a direct assessment. Nevertheless, by careful monitoring of ecological events before, during and after the pumping it is possible to document changes in th e river and by reference to the data already available for the Rive r Lambourn, normal seasonal changes in the flora and fauna can be separated from changes which may be attributable to the pumping and subsequent events.
