This paper addresses the non-preemptive single machine scheduling problem to minimize total tardiness. We are interested in the online version of this problem, where orders arrive at the system at random times. Jobs have to be scheduled without knowledge of what jobs will come afterwards. The processing times and the due dates become known when the order is placed. The order release date occurs only at the beginning of periodic intervals. A customized approximate dynamic programming method is introduced for this problem. The authors also present numerical experiments that assess the reliability of the new approach and show that it performs better than a myopic policy.

The flowshop scheduling problem with blocking in-process is addressed in this paper. In this environment, there are no buffers between successive machines: therefore intermediate queues of jobs waiting in the system for their next operations are not allowed. Heuristic approaches are proposed to minimize the total tardiness criterion. A constructive heuristic that explores specific characteristics of the problem is presented. Moreover, a GRASP-based heuristic is proposed and Coupled with a path relinking strategy to search for better outcomes. Computational tests are presented and the comparisons made with an adaptation of the NEH algorithm and with a branch-and-bound algorithm indicate that the new approaches are promising. Strawberries are one of the most popular edible fruits in Brazil and their consumption has increased with the development of new varieties available at almost all seasons. Fruit of seven full-ripened strawberry cultivars (Dover, Camp Dover, Camarosa, Sweet Charlie, Toyonoka, Oso Grande and Piedade) were characterized in relation to the total phenolics, vitamin C, flavonoids, free and total ellagic acid contents and antioxidant capacity. Camp Dover had the lowest values for anthocyanins and total phenolics but the highest total flavonoid content. Dover presented the highest anthocyanin, total phenolics and ellagic acid contents and also elevated antioxidant capacity. The best conditions for the determination of the total ellagic acid content in strawberries were also optimized and the results showed that the extraction with 80% acetone, and hydrolysis using 2 N TFA at 120 degrees C for 60 min allowed a 99% recovery. Background: Cobalamin (Cbl) and folate deficiencies and gene polymorphism of key enzymes or carriers can impair homocysteine metabolism and may change the serum values of S-adenosylmethionine (SAM) and S-adenosylhomocysteine (SAH). We investigated the nutritional and genetic determinants for total homocysteine (tHcy), methylmalonic acid (MMA) and SAM/SAH in healthy Brazilian childbearing-age women. Methods: Serum concentrations of Cbl, folate, red blood cell folate, ferritin, tHcy, MMA, SAM, SAH and other metabolites were measured in 102 healthy unrelated women. The genotypes for MTHFR C677T, MTHFR A1298C, MTR A2756G, MTRR A66G, TC2 C776G, TC2 A67G and RFCI A80G gene polymorphisms were identified by PCR-RFLP. Results: Serum folate and Cbl were inversely correlated with tHcy and serum MMA, respectively. Cbl deficiency was associated with increased MMA and reduced alpha-aminobutyrate, serine and N-methylglycine concentrations. No variable was associated with SAM/SAH ratio. In addition, gene polymorphisms were not selected as determinants for tHcy, MMA and SAM/SAH ratio. Iron, Cbl and folate deficiencies were found respectively in 30.4%, 22.5% and 2.0% of individuals studied. Conclusions: There was a high frequency of Cbl and iron deficiency in this group of childbearing-age women. Serum folate and Cbl were the determinants of serum tHcy and MMA concentration, respectively. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The Billings Complex and the Guarapiranga System are important strategic reservoirs for the city of Sao Paulo and surrounding areas because the water is used among other things, for the public water supply. They produce 19,000 liters of water per second and Supply water to 5.4 million people. Crude water is transferred from the Taquacetuba branch of the Billings Complex to the Guarapiranga Reservoir to regulate the water level of the reservoir. The objective of this study was to evaluate the water quality in the Taquacetuba branch, focusing on cyanobacteria and cyanotoxins. Surface water samples were collected in February (summer) and July (winter) of 2007. Analyses were conducted of physical, chemical, and biological variables of he water, cyanobacteria richness and density, and the presence of cyanotoxins. The water was classified as eutrophic-hypereutrophic. Cyanobacteria blooms were observed in both collection periods. The cyanobacteria bloom was most significant in July, reflecting lower water transparency and higher levels of total solids, suspended organic matter, chlorophyll-a, and cyanobacteria density in the surface water. Low richness and elevated dominance of the cyanobacteria were found in both periods. Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii was dominant in February, with 352 661.0 cel mL(-1), and Microcystis panniformis was dominant in July, with 1 866 725.0 cel mL(-1). Three variants of microcystin were found in February (MC-RR, MC-LR, MC-YR), as well as saxitoxin. The same variants of microcystin were found in July, but no saxitoxin was detected. Anatoxin-a and cylindropermopsin were not detected in either period. These findings are of great concern because the water in the Taquacetuba branch, which is transferred into the Guarapiranga Reservoir, is not treated nor managed. It is recommended that monitoring be intensified and more effective measures be taken by the responsible agencies to prevent the process of eutrophication and the consequent development of the cyanobacteria and their toxins.

Objectives: To examine the association between methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) (C677T and A1298C), methionine synthase (MTR) A2756G and methionine synthase reductase (MTRR) A66G gene polymorphisms and total homocysteine (tHcy), methylmalonic acid (MMA) and S-adenosylmethionine/ S-adenosylhomocysteine (SAM/SAH) levels; and to evaluate the potential interactions with folate or cobalamin (Cbl) status. Subjects/ Methods: Two hundred seventy-five healthy women at labor who delivered full-term normal babies. Cbl, folate, tHcy, MMA, SAM and SAH were measured in serum specimens. The genotypes for polymorphisms were determined by PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism ( RFLP). Results: Serum folate, MTHFR 677T allele and MTR 2756AA genotypes were the predictors of tHcy levels in pregnant women. Serum Cbl and creatinine were the predictors of SAM/SAH ratio and MMA levels, respectively. The gene polymorphisms were not determinants for MMA levels and SAM/SAH ratios. Low levels of serum folate were associated with elevated tHcy in pregnant women, independently of the gene polymorphisms. In pregnant women carrying MTHFR 677T allele, or MTHFR 1298AA or MTRR 66AA genotypes, lower Cbl levels were associated with higher levels of tHcy. Lower SAM/SAH ratio was found in MTHFR 677CC or MTRR A2756AA genotypes carriers when Cbl levels were lower than 142 pmol/l. Conclusions: Serum folate and MTHFR C677T and MTR A2576G gene polymorphisms were the determinants for tHcy levels. The interaction between low levels of serum Cbl and MTHFR (C677T or A1298C) or MTRR A66G gene polymorphisms was associated with increased tHcy.

The main objectives of the present study were (a) to study the effects of the different combinations of Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus (Lb), Lactobacillus acidophilus (La), Lactobacillus rhamnosus (Lr), and Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis (BI) in co-culture with Streptococcus thermophilus (St) on the rate of acid development in milk and milk-whey mixture, and (b) the effect of the level of the total solids of the different bases on the acidification profile and viability of potential health-promoting microorganisms. The co-culture of St-Lr showed the lowest values V(max) in all bases; while the co-culture St-Bl had high t(Vmax) in milk and whey bases (12 and 10 g/100 g, respectively). Co-cultures St-La and St-Lb reached V(max) at pH 5.5, while St-Lr and St-Bl at pH 5.91. Fermentation time to reach pH 4.5 was longer when St-Lr co-culture was used, while St-Lb had the lowest value. All the products had slight development of acid during the storage period, and lowest values were observed when the St-Bl co-culture was employed. Lb, BI and St cultures had high counts at pH 4.5 in the three bases. The total solids affected the viability of Lb and La. In this work total reflection X-ray fluorescence spectrometry has been employed to determine trace element concentrations in different human breast tissues (normal, normal adjacent, benign and malignant). A multivariate discriminant analysis of observed levels was performed in order to build a predictive model and perform tissue-type classifications. A total of 83 breast tissue samples were studied. Results showed the presence of Ca, Ti, Fe, Cu and Zn in all analyzed samples. All trace elements, except Ti, were found in higher concentrations in both malignant and benign tissues, when compared to normal tissues and normal adjacent tissues. In addition, the concentration of Fe was higher in malignant tissues than in benign neoplastic tissues. An opposite behavior was observed for Ca, Cu and Zn. Results have shown that discriminant analysis was able to successfully identify differences between trace element distributions from normal and malignant tissues with an overall accuracy of 80% and 65% for independent and paired breast samples respectively, and of 87% for benign and malignant tissues. Recently, some research groups have been developing studies aiming to apply spouted beds of inert particles for production of dried herbal extracts. However, mainly due to their complex composition, several problems arise during the spouted bed drying of herbal extracts such as bed instability, product accumulation, particle agglomeration, and bed collapse. The addition of drying carriers, like colloidal silicon dioxide, to the extractive solution can minimize these unwanted effects. The aim of this work was to study the influence of the addition of colloidal silicon dioxide on enhancement of the performance of the drying of hydroalcoholic extract of Bauhinia forficata Link on a spouted bed of inert particles. The physical properties of the herbal extract and of its mixture with colloidal silicon dioxide at several concentrations (20% to 80% related to solids content) were quantified by determination of the surface tension, rheological properties, density, pH, and contact angles with the inert surfaces. Drying performance was evaluated through determination of the elutriation ratio, product recovery ratio, and product accumulation. The product was characterized through determination of the thermal degradation of bioactive compounds and product moisture content. The results indicated that the rheological properties of the extracts and their preparations, the contact angle with inert material, and the work of adhesion play important roles in the spouted bed drying of herbal extracts. Higher concentration of the drying carrier significantly improved the spouted bed drying performance.

A simple method with a fast sample preparation procedure for total and inorganic mercury determinations in blood samples is proposed based on flow injection cold vapor inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (FI-CVICP-MS). Aliquots of whole blood (500 mL) are diluted 1 + 1 v/v with 10.0% v/v tetramethylammonium hydroxide (TMAH) solution, incubated for 3 h at room temperature and then further diluted 1 + 4 v/v with 2.0% v/v HCl. The inorganic Hg was released by online addition of L-cysteine and then reduced to elemental Hg by SnCl(2). On the other hand, total mercury was determined by on-line addition of KMnO(4) and then reduced to elemental Hg by NaBH(4). Samples were calibrated against matrix-matching. The method detection limit was found to be 0.80 mu g L(-1) and 0.08 mu g L(-1) for inorganic and total mercury, respectively. Sample throughput is 20 samples h(-1). The method accuracy is traceable to Standard Reference Material (SRM) 966 Toxic Metals in Bovine Blood from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). For additional validation purposes, human whole blood samples were analyzed by the proposed method and by an established CV AAS method, with no statistical difference between the two techniques at 95% confidence level on applying the t-test.

The present study details new turbulence field measurements conducted continuously at high frequency for 50 hours in the upper zone of a small subtropical estuary with semi-diurnal tides. Acoustic Doppler velocimetry was used, and the signal was post-processed thoroughly. The suspended sediment concentration wad further deduced from the acoustic backscatter intensity. The field data set demonstrated some unique flow features of the upstream estuarine zone, including some low-frequency longitudinal oscillations induced by internal and external resonance. A striking feature of the data set is the large fluctuations in all turbulence properties and suspended sediment concentration during the tidal cycle. This feature has been rarely documented.

In small estuaries, the predictions of scalar dispersion can rarely be predicted accurately because of a lack of fundamental understanding of the turbulence structure. Herein detailed turbulence measurements and suspended sediment concentrations were conducted simultaneously and continuously at high-frequency for 50 hours per investigation in a small subtropical estuary with semi-diurnal tides. The data analyses provided an unique characterisation of the turbulent mixing processes and suspended sediment fluxes. The turbulence was neither homogeneous nor isotropic, and it was not a Gaussian process. The integral time scales for turbulence and suspended sediment concentration were about equal during flood tides, but differed significantly during ebb tides. The field experiences showed that the turbulence measurements must be conducted at high-frequency to characterise the small eddies and the viscous dissipation process, while a continuous sampling was necessary to characterise the time-variations of the instantaneous velocity field, Reynolds stress tensor and suspended sediment flux during the tidal cycles.

Strategies for sampling sediment bacteria were examined in intensive shrimp, Penaeus monodon (Fabricius), ponds in tropical Australia. Stratified sampling of bacteria at the end of the production season showed that the pond centre, containing flocculated sludge, had significantly higher bacterial counts (15.5 X 10(9) g(-1) dw) than the pond periphery (8.1 X 10(9) g(-1) dw), where the action of aerators had swept the pond floor. The variation in bacterial counts between these two zones within a pond was higher than that between sites within each zone or between ponds. Therefore, sampling effort should be focused within these zones: for example, sampling two ponds at six locations within each of the two zones resulted in a coefficient of variation of approximate to 5%. Bacterial numbers in the sediment were highly correlated with sediment grain size, probably because eroded soil particles and organic waste both accumulated in the centre of the pond. Despite high inputs of organic matter added to the ponds, principally as pelleted feeds, the mean bacterial numbers and nutrient concentrations (i.e. organic carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus) in the sediment were similar to those found in mangrove sediments. This suggests that bacteria are rapidly remineralizing particulates into soluble compounds. Bacterial numbers were highly correlated with organic carbon and total kjeldahl nitrogen in the sediment, suggesting that these were limiting factors to bacterial growth.

Back,ground To examine the role of long-term swimming exercise on regional and total body bone mineral density (BMD) in men. Methods. Experimental design: Cross-sectional. Setting: Musculoskeletal research laboratory at a medical center, Participants:We compared elite collegiate swimmers (n=11) to age-, weight-, and height-matched non-athletic controls (n=11), Measures: BMD (g/cm(2)) of the lumbar spine L2-4, proximal femur (femoral neck, trochanter, Ward's triangle), total body and various subregions of the total body, as well as regional and total body fat and bone mineral-free lean mass (LM) was assessed by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA, Hologic QDR 1000/W). Results. Swimmers, who commenced training at 10.7+/-3.7 yrs (mean+/-SD) and trained for 24.7+/-4.2 hrs per week, had a greater amount of LM (p<0.05), lower fat mass (p<0.001) and percent body fat (9.5 vs 16.2 %, p<0.001) than controls. There was no significant difference between groups for regional or total body BRID, In stepwise multiple regression analysis, body weight was a consistent independent predictor of regional and total body BMD, Conclusions. These results suggest that long-term swimming is not an osteogenic mode of training in college-aged males. This supports our previous findings in young female swimmers who displayed no bone mass benefits despite long-standing athletic training.

Changes in the physical properties (such as particle density, bulk density of the bed, shrinkage and bed porosity) of fresh green bean particulates were investigated during drying. Three length:diameter ratios (1:1, 2:1 and 3:1) were considered, using drying conditions of 50 +/- 2 degrees C and 13 +/- 2% relative humidity in a heat pump dehumidifier system. The fluidization behaviour was also evaluated at 10 levels of moisture content. The fluidization experiments demonstrated that the minimum fluidization velocity decreases as the drying proceeds due to the reduced moisture content and changes in the physical properties of the bean particulates. Empirical relationships of the following nature were developed for the change in shrinkage [VR = 1 - Be-kMR], particle density [rho(p) = A + BMR + C (exp)(-D MR)], bulk density [rho(b) = a(1) + b(1)MR + c(1)MR(2)] and bed porosity [epsilon = a(2) + b(2)MR + c(2)MR(2)] with the moisture content during fluidized bed drying.
