The present study reports a two dimensional NMR experiment which separates single quantum spectra of enantiomers from that of a racemic mixture. This is a blend of selective double quantum refocusing, for resolving couplings and chemical shift interactions along two dimensions followed by correlation of the selectively excited protons to the entire coupled spin network. The concept is solely based on the presence of distinct intra methyl dipolar couplings of different enantiomers when dissolved in chiral orienting media. The analysis of single enantiomer spectrum obtained from respective F-2 cross sections yield all the spectral information. (C) 2011 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

We propose an iterative algorithm to simulate the dynamics generated by any n-qubit Hamiltonian. The simulation entails decomposing the unitary time evolution operator U (unitary) into a product of different time-step unitaries. The algorithm product-decomposes U in a chosen operator basis by identifying a certain symmetry of U that is intimately related to the number of gates in the decomposition. We illustrate the algorithm by first obtaining a polynomial decomposition in the Pauli basis of the n-qubit quantum state transfer unitary by Di Franco et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 101, 230502 (2008)] that transports quantum information from one end of a spin chain to the other, and then implement it in nuclear magnetic resonance to demonstrate that the decomposition is experimentally viable. We further experimentally test the resilience of the state transfer to static errors in the coupling parameters of the simulated Hamiltonian. This is done by decomposing and simulating the corresponding imperfect unitaries.

We study the quenching dynamics of a many-body system in one dimension described by a Hamiltonian that has spatial periodicity. Specifically, we consider a spin-1/2 chain with equal xx and yy couplings and subject to a periodically varying magnetic field in the (z) over cap direction or, equivalently, a tight-binding model of spinless fermions with a periodic local chemical potential, having period 2q, where q is a positive integer. For a linear quench of the strength of the magnetic field (or chemical potential) at a rate 1/tau across a quantum critical point, we find that the density of defects thereby produced scales as 1/tau(q/(q+1)), deviating from the 1/root tau scaling that is ubiquitous in a range of systems. We analyze this behavior by mapping the low-energy physics of the system to a set of fermionic two-level systems labeled by the lattice momentum k undergoing a nonlinear quench as well as by performing numerical simulations. We also show that if the magnetic field is a superposition of different periods, the power law depends only on the smallest period for very large values of tau, although it may exhibit a crossover at intermediate values of tau. Finally, for the case where a zz coupling is also present in the spin chain, or equivalently, where interactions are present in the fermionic system, we argue that the power associated with the scaling law depends on a combination of q and the interaction strength.

We have fabricated nano-Schottky diodes of CdTe QDs with platinum metal electrodes in metal-semiconductor-metal planar configuration by drop-casting. The observed high value of ideality factor (13.3) of the diode was possibly due to the presence of defects in colloidal QDs. We observed asymmetry and non-linear nature of I-V characteristics between forward and reverse directions, which has been explained in terms of size distributions of quantum dots due to coffee ring effect. We report gas phase mid-infrared spectra of 1- and 2- methyl naphthalenes at 0.2 cm(-1) resolution. Assignment of observed bands have been made using scaled quantum mechanical (SQM) calculations where the force fields rather the frequencies are scaled to find a close fit between observed and calculated bands. The structure of the molecules has been optimized using B3LYP level of theory in conjunction with standard 6-311G** basis set to obtain the harmonic frequencies. Using the force constants in Cartesian coordinates from the Gaussian output, scaled force field calculations are carried out using a modified version of the UMAT program in the QCPE package. Potential energy distributions of the normal modes obtained from such calculations helped us assign the observed bands and identify the unique features of the spectra of 1- and 2-MNs which are important for their isomeric identification.

We have investigated quadratic nonlinearity (beta(HRS)) and linear and circular depolarization ratios (D and D', respectively) of a series of 1:1 complexes of tropyliumtetrafluoroborate as a cation and methyl-substituted benzenes as pi-donors by making polarization resolved hyper-Rayleigh scattering measurements in solution. The measured D and D' values are much lower than the values expected from a typical sandwich or a T-shaped geometry of a complex. In the cation-pi complexes studied here, the D value varies from 1.36 to 1.46 and D' from 1.62 to 1.72 depending on the number of methyl substitutions on the benzene ring. In order to probe it further, beta, D and D' were computed using the Zerner intermediate neglect of differential overlap-correction vector self-consistent reaction field technique including single and double configuration interactions in the absence and presence of BF4- anion. In the absence of the anion, the calculated value of D varies from 4.20 to 4.60 and that of D' from 2.45 to 2.72 which disagree with experimental values. However, by arranging three cation-pi BF4- complexes in a trigonal symmetry, the computed values are brought to agreement with experiments. When such an arrangement was not considered, the calculated beta values were lower than the experimental values by more than a factor of two. This unprecedented influence of the otherwise ``unimportant'' anion in solution on the beta value and depolarization ratios of these cation-pi complexes is highlighted and emphasized in this paper. The photoluminescence study of Fermi-edge singularity (FES) in modulation-doped pseudomorphic AlxGa1-xAs/InyGa1-yAs/GaAs quantum well (QW) heterostructures is presented. In the above QW structures the optical transitions between n = 1 and n = 2 electronic subband to the n = 1 heavy hole subband (E-11 and E-21 transitions, respectively) are observed with FES appearing as a lower energy shoulder to the E-21 transition. The observed FES is attributed to the Fermi wave vector in the first electronic subband under the conditions of population of the second electronic subband. The FES appears at about 10 meV below E-21 transition around 4.2 K. Initially it gets stronger with increasing temperature and becomes a distinct peak at about 20 K. Further increase in temperature quenches FES and reaches the base line at around 40 K.

Recent simulations of the stretching of tethered biopolymers at a constant speed v (Ponmurugan and Vemparala, 2011 Phys. Rev. E 84 060101(R)) have suggested that for any time t, the distribution of the fluctuating forces f responsible for chain deformation is governed by a relation of the form P(+ f)/ P(- f) = expgamma f], gamma being a coefficient that is solely a function of v and the temperature T. This result, which is reminiscent of the fluctuation theorems applicable to stochastic trajectories involving thermodynamic variables, is derived in this paper from an analytical calculation based on a generalization of Mazonka and Jarzynski's classic model of dragged particle dynamics Mazonka and Jarzynski, 1999 arXiv:cond-\textbackslashmat/9912121v1]. However, the analytical calculations suggest that the result holds only if t >> 1 and the force fluctuations are driven by white rather than colored noise; they further suggest that the coefficient gamma in the purported theorem varies not as v(0.15)T-(0.7), as indicated by the simulations, but as vT(-1).

We present an extensive study of Mott insulator (MI) and superfluid (SF) shells in Bose-Hubbard (BH) models for bosons in optical lattices with harmonic traps. For this we apply the inhomogeneous mean-field theory developed by Sheshadri et al. Phys. Rev. Lett. 75, 4075 (1995)]. Our results for the BH model with one type of spinless bosons agree quantitatively with quantum Monte Carlo simulations. Our approach is numerically less intensive than such simulations, so we are able to perform calculations on experimentally realistic, large three-dimensional systems, explore a wide range of parameter values, and make direct contact with a variety of experimental measurements. We also extend our inhomogeneous mean-field theory to study BH models with harmonic traps and (a) two species of bosons or (b) spin-1 bosons. With two species of bosons, we obtain rich phase diagrams with a variety of SF and MI phases and associated shells when we include a quadratic confining potential. For the spin-1 BH model, we show, in a representative case, that the system can display alternating shells of polar SF and MI phases, and we make interesting predictions for experiments in such systems.

Poly (beta-L-malic acid) (PMLA) is a biodegradable polymer and it has various important applications in the biomedical field. In the present work the structural and spectral characteristics of PMLA have been studied by methods of infrared. Raman spectroscopy and quantum chemistry. Electrostatic potential surface, optimized geometry, harmonic vibrational frequencies, infrared intensities and activities of Raman scattering were calculated by density functional theory (DFT) using oligomeric approach employing B3LYP with complete relaxation in the potential energy surface using 6-311++G (d, p) basis set. Based on results, we have discussed the correlation between the vibrational modes and the structure of the PMLA. A complete analysis of the experimental infrared and Raman spectra has been reported on the basis of wavenumber of the vibrational bands and potential energy distribution. The calculated HOMO and LUMO energies shows that charge transfer occur within the molecule. The calculated infrared and the Raman spectra of the polymer based on DFT calculations show reasonable agreement with the experimental results. (c) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Infrared spectra of atmospherically and astronomically important dimethylphenanthrenes (DMPs), namely 1,9-DMP, 2,4-DMP, and 3,9-DMP, were recorded in the gas phase from 400 to 4000 cm(-1) with a resolution of 0.5 cm(-1) at 110 degrees C using a 7.2 m gas cell. DFT calculations at the B3LYP/6-311G** level were carried out to get the harmonic and anharmonic frequencies and their corresponding intensities for the assignment of the observed bands. However, spectral assignments could not be made unambiguously using anharmonic or selectively scaled harmonic frequencies. Therefore, the scaled quantum mechanical (SQM) force field analysis method was adopted to achieve more accurate assignments. In this method force fields instead of frequencies were scaled. The Cartesian force field matrix obtained from the Gaussian calculations was converted to a nonredundant local coordinate force field matrix and then the force fields were scaled to match experimental frequencies in a consistent manner using a modified version of the UMAT program of the QCPE package. Potential energy distributions (PEDs) of the normal modes in terms of nonredundant local coordinates obtained from these calculations helped us derive the nature of the vibration at each frequency. The intensity of observed bands in the experimental spectra was calculated using estimated vapor pressures of the DMPs. An error analysis of the mean deviation between experimental and calculated intensities reveal that the observed methyl C-H stretching intensity deviates more compared to the aromatic C-H and non C-H stretching bands.

We address a physically based analytical model of quantum capacitance (C-Q) in a bilayer graphene nanoribbon (BGN) under the application of an external longitudinal static bias. We demonstrate that as the gap (Delta) about the Dirac point increases, a phenomenological population inversion of the carriers in the two sets of subbands occurs. This results in a periodic and composite oscillatory behavior in the C-Q with the channel potential, which also decreases with increase in Delta. We also study the quantum size effects on the C-Q, which signatures heavy spatial oscillations due to the occurrence of van Hove singularities in the total density-of-states function of both the sets of subbands. All the mathematical results as derived in this paper converge to the corresponding well-known solution of graphene under certain limiting conditions and this compatibility is an indirect test of our theoretical formalism. The evolution of entanglement in a 3-spin chain with nearest-neighbor Heisenberg-XY interactions for different initial states is investigated here. In an NMR experimental implementation, we generate multipartite entangled states starting from initial separable pseudo-pure states by simulating nearest-neighbor XY interactions in a 3-spin linear chain of nuclear spin qubits. For simulating XY interactions, we follow algebraic method of Zhang et al. Phys. Rev. A 72 (2005) 012331]. Bell state between end qubits has been generated by using only the unitary evolution of the XY Hamiltonian. For generating W-state and GHZ-state a single qubit rotation is applied on second and all the three qubits, respectively after the unitary evolution of the XY Hamiltonian.
