The use of TiO 2 photocatalysis for the destruction of dyes such as methylene blue has been extensively reported. One of the challenges faced in both the laboratory and large scale water treatment plants is the fact that the samples have to be removed from the reactor vessel and the catalyst separated prior to analysis being undertaken. In this paper we report the development of a simple fluorimeter instrument and its use in monitoring the photocatalytic destruction of methylene blue dyes in the presence of catalyst suspensions. The results reported show that the instrument provides an effective method for in situ monitoring of the photocatalytic destruction of fluorescent dyes hence allowing more accurate measurement due to the minimisation of sample loss and cross contamination. Furthermore it also provides a method for real time monitoring of the dye pollutant destruction in large scale photocatalytic reactors.

Sonoluminescence (SL) involves the conversion of mechanical [ultra]sound energy into light. Whilst the phenomenon is invariably inefficient, typically converting just 10-4 of the incident acoustic energy into photons, it is nonetheless extraordinary, as the resultant energy density of the emergent photons exceeds that of the ultrasonic driving field by a factor of some 10 12. Sonoluminescence has specific [as yet untapped] advantages in that it can be effected at remote locations in an essentially wireless format. The only [usual] requirement is energy transduction via the violent oscillation of microscopic bubbles within the propagating medium. The dependence of sonoluminescent output on the generating sound field's parameters, such as pulse duration, duty cycle, and position within the field, have been observed and measured previously, and several relevant aspects are discussed presently. We also extrapolate the logic from a recently published analysis relating to the ensuing dynamics of bubble 'clouds' that have been stimulated by ultrasound. Here, the intention was to develop a relevant [yet computationally simplistic] model that captured the essential physical qualities expected from real sonoluminescent microbubble clouds. We focused on the inferred temporal characteristics of SL light output from a population of such bubbles, subjected to intermediate [0.5-2MPa] ultrasonic pressures. Finally, whilst direct applications for sonoluminescent light output are thought unlikely in the main, we proceed to frame the state-of-the- art against several presently existing technologies that could form adjunct approaches with distinct potential for enhancing present sonoluminescent light output that may prove useful in real world [biomedical] applications.

We demonstrate for the first time that fine varying of the density gradient of a plasma mirror along with laser spatial phase on target allows total control over the harmonic generation mechanisms and harmonic spatial properties. An analytical model is also proposed. © OSA 2013.

A Physical Unclonable Function (PUF) can be used to provide authentication of devices by producing die-unique responses. In PUFs based on ring oscillators (ROs) the responses are derived from the oscillation frequencies of the ROs. However, RO PUFs can be vulnerable to attack due to the frequency distribution characteristics of the RO arrays. In this letter, in order to improve the design of RO PUFs for FPGA devices, the frequencies of RO arrays implemented on a large number of FPGA chips are statistically analyzed. Three RO frequency distribution (ROFD) characteristics, which can be used to improve the design of RO PUFs are observed and discussed.

High resolution synchrotron radiation core level photoemission measurements have been used to undertake a comparative study of the high temperature stability of ultrathin Al2O3 layers deposited by atomic layer deposition (ALD) on both sulphur passivated and native oxide covered InGaAs. The residual interfacial oxides between sulphur passivated InGaAs and the ultrathin Al2O3 layer can be substantially removed at high temperature (up to 700 °C) without impacting on the InGaAs stoichiometry while significant loss of indium was recorded at this temperature on the native oxide InGaAs surface.

The combinatorial frequency generation by the periodic stacks of magnetically biased semiconductor layers has been modelled in the self-consistent problem formulation, taking into account the nonlinear dynamics of carriers. It has been shown that the nonlinear response of the magnetoactive semiconductor periodic structure is strongly enhanced by magnetic bias and combinations of the layer physical and geometrical parameters. The effects of the pump wave nonreciprocal reflectance and field displacement on the efficiency of three-wave mixing process is illustrated by the simulation results

Doubly periodic arrays of strip conductors printed on a composite ferrite-dielectric substrate have been investigated at oblique incidence of linear polarized plane waves. The simulation results revealed strong non-reciprocity of wave reflectance and transmittance at positive and negative angles of incidence. It is also shown that the non-reciprocity is further enhanced by the strip conductor pattern.

The nonlinear scattering and combinatorial frequency generation by the quasi-periodic Fibonacci and Thue-Morse stacks of semiconductor layers have been investigated taking into account the nonlinear charge dynamics. It has been shown that the mixing processes in passive semiconductor structures are driven by the competitive effects of the collision of charges and resonance interactions of carriers with pump waves. The effects of the stack arrangements and constituent layer parameters on the efficiency of the combinatorial frequency generation are discussed.

A series of acyl phosphonamidates, the synthetic precursors to bisphosphonates, have been readily prepared from phosphoramidite type reagents and a range of acid chlorides. These reactions were performed using solventless conditions, where purification was easily achieved using column chromatography with yields ranging from 71-90%. Furthermore, we have demonstrated that these acyl phosphonamidates could be used for the preparation of unsymmetrical bisphosphonates, which do date are scarcely reported in the literature.

Quasi-phase matching (QPM) can be used to increase the conversion efficiency of the high harmonic generation (HHG) process. We observed QPM with an improved dual-gas foil target with a 1 kHz, 10 mJ, 30 fs laser system. Phase tuning and enhancement were possible within a spectral range from 17 nm to 30 nm. Furthermore analytical calculations and numerical simulations were carried out to distinguish QPM from other effects, such as the influence of adjacent jets on each other or the laser gas interaction. The simulations were performed with a 3 dimensional code to investigate the phase matching of the short and long trajectories individually over a large spectral range.

The preparation of Janus fibers using a new side-by-side electrospinning process is reported. By manipulating the angle between the two ports of the spinneret emitting the working fluids, Janus nanofibers with tunable structures in terms of width, interfacial area and also volume of each side can be easily fabricated.

Metallic glass alloy Metglas 2826 MB based amorphous magnetic thin films were fabricated by the thermal evaporation technique. Transmission electron micrographs and electron diffraction pattern showed the amorphous nature of the films. Composition of the films was analyzed employing x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy techniques. The film was integrated to a long period fibre grating. It was observed that the resonance wavelength of the fibre grating decreased with an increase in the magnetic field. Change in the resonance wavelength was minimal at higher magnetic fields. Field dependent magnetostriction values revealed the potential application of these films in magnetostrictive sensor devices
