In this paper we discuss and analyze the process of using a learning object repository and building a social network on the top of it, including aspects related to open source technologies, promoting the use of the repository by means of social networks and helping learners to develop their own learning paths.

In this paper we describe a proposal for defining the relationships between resources, users and services in a digital repository. Nowadays, virtual learning environments are widely used but digital repositories are not fully integrated yet into the learning process. Our final goal is to provide final users with recommendation systems and reputation schemes that help them to build a true learning community around the institutional repository, taking into account their educational context (i.e. the courses they are enrolled into) and their activity (i.e. system usage by their classmates and teachers). In order to do so, we extend the basic resource concept in a traditional digital repository by adding all the educational context and other elements from end-users' profiles, thus bridging users, resources and services, and shifting from a library-centered paradigm to a learning-centered one.

The reason for this study is to propose a new quantitative approach on how to assess the quality of Open Access University Institutional Repositories. The results of this new approach are tested in the Spanish University Repositories. The assessment method is based in a binary codification of a proposal of features that objectively describes the repositories. The purposes of this method are assessing the quality and an almost automatically system for updating the data of the characteristics. First of all a database was created with the 38 Spanish institutional repositories. The variables of analysis are presented and explained either if they are coming from bibliography or are a set of new variables. Among the characteristics analyzed are the features of the software, the services of the repository, the features of the information system, the Internet visibility and the licenses of use. Results from Spanish universities ARE provided as a practical example of the assessment and for having a picture of the state of the development of the open access movement in Spain.

The World Wide Web, the world¿s largest resource for information, has evolved from organizing information using controlled, top-down taxonomies to a bottom up approach that emphasizes assigning meaning to data via mechanisms such as the Social Web (Web 2.0). Tagging adds meta-data, (weak semantics) to the content available on the web. This research investigates the potential for repurposing this layer of meta-data. We propose a multi-phase approach that exploits user-defined tags to identify and extract domain-level concepts. We operationalize this approach and assess its feasibility by application to a publicly available tag repository. The paper describes insights gained from implementing and applying the heuristics contained in the approach, as well as challenges and implications of repurposing tags for extraction of domain-level concepts.

Today, most software development teams use free and open source software (FOSS) components, because it increases the speed and the quality of the development. Many open source components are the de facto standard of their category. However, FOSS has licensing restrictions, and corporate organizations usually maintain a list of allowed and forbidden licenses. But how do you enforce this policy? How can you make sure that ALL files in your source depot, either belong to you, or fit your licensing policy? A first, preventive approach is to train and increase the awareness of the development team to these licensing issues. Depending on the size of the team, it may be costly but necessary. However, this does not ensure that a single individual will not commit a forbidden icon or library, and jeopardize the legal status of the whole release... if not the company, since software is becoming more and more a critical asset. Another approach is to verify what is included in the source repository, and check whether it belongs to the open-source world. This can be done on-the-fly, whenever a new file is added into the source depot. It can also be part of the release process, as a verification step before publishing the release. In both cases, there are some tools and databases to automate the detection process. We will present the various options regarding FOSS detection, how this process can be integrated in the "software factory", and how the results can be displayed in a usable and efficient way.

The R package EasyStrata facilitates the evaluation and visualization of stratified genome-wide association meta-analyses (GWAMAs) results. It provides (i) statistical methods to test and account for between-strata difference as a means to tackle gene-strata interaction effects and (ii) extended graphical features tailored for stratified GWAMA results. The software provides further features also suitable for general GWAMAs including functions to annotate, exclude or highlight specific loci in plots or to extract independent subsets of loci from genome-wide datasets. It is freely available and includes a user-friendly scripting interface that simplifies data handling and allows for combining statistical and graphical functions in a flexible fashion. Phylogenetic trees representing the evolutionary relationships of homologous genes are the entry point for many evolutionary analyses. For instance, the use of a phylogenetic tree can aid in the inference of orthology and paralogy relationships, and in the detection of relevant evolutionary events such as gene family expansions and contractions, horizontal gene transfer, recombination or incomplete lineage sorting. Similarly, given the plurality of evolutionary histories among genes encoded in a given genome, there is a need for the combined analysis of genome-wide collections of phylogenetic trees (phylomes). Here, we introduce a new release of PhylomeDB (http://phylomedb.org), a public repository of phylomes. Currently, PhylomeDB hosts 120 public phylomes, comprising >1.5 million maximum likelihood trees and multiple sequence alignments. In the current release, phylogenetic trees are annotated with taxonomic, protein-domain arrangement, functional and evolutionary information. PhylomeDB is also a major source for phylogeny-based predictions of orthology and paralogy, covering >10 million proteins across 1059 sequenced species. Here we describe newly implemented PhylomeDB features, and discuss a benchmark of the orthology predictions provided by the database, the impact of proteome updates and the use of the phylome approach in the analysis of newly sequenced genomes and transcriptomes.

Työn tavoitteena on etsiä asiakasyritykselle sähköteknisen dokumentoinnin hallintaan sopiva järjestelmäratkaisu vertailemalla insinööritoimistojen käyttämien suunnittelujärjestelmien ja yleisten dokumenttien hallintajärjestelmien soveltuvuutta asiakasympäristöön. Työssä tutkitaan sopivien metatietojen kuvaustapojen käyttökelpoisuutta sähköteknisen dokumentoinnin hallintaan esimerkkiprojektien avulla. Työn sisältö koostuu neljästä pääkohdasta. Ensimmäisessä jaksossa tarkastellaan dokumentin ominaisuuksia ja elinkaarta luonnista aktiivikäyttöön, arkistointiin ja hävitykseen. Samassa yhteydessä kerrotaan dokumenttienhallinnan perustehtävistä. Toisessa jaksossa käsitellään dokumenttien kuvailun tavoitteita, kuvailusuosituksia ja -standardeja sekä luonnollisen kielen käyttöä sisällönkuvailussa. Tarkastelukohteina suosituksista ovat W3C:n julkaisemat suositukset, Dublin Core, JHS 143 ja SFS-EN 82045. Kolmannessa jaksossa tarkastellaan teollisuuden dokumentoinnin ominaispiirteitä ja käyttötarkoitusta. Teollisuudessa on monia erilaisia järjestelmäympäristöjä tehtaan sisällä ja työssä kuvataan dokumenttienhallinnan integrointitarpeita muihin järjestelmiin. Viimeisessä jaksossa kuvaillaan erilaisia dokumentoinnin hallintaympäristöjä alkaen järeimmästä päästä tuotetiedon hallintajärjestelmistä siirtyen pienempiinsuunnittelujärjestelmiin ja lopuksi yleisiin dokumenttien hallintajärjestelmiin. Tässä osassa on myös luettelo ohjelmistotoimittajista. Työn tuloksena on laadittu valituista dokumenttityypeistä metatietokuvaukset kahden eri kuvaustavan (JHS 143 ja SFS-EN 82045) avulla ja on todettu molemmat kuvaustavat käyttökelpoisiksi sähköteknisen dokumentoinnin käsittelyyn.Nämä kuvaukset palvelevat asiakasta dokumenttienhallintaprojektin määrittelytyössä. Asiakkaalle on tehty myös vertailu sopivista järjestelmävaihtoehdoista hankintaa varten.

Työssä tarkastellaan digitaalisten oppimateriaalien tuottamiseen ja käyttöön liittyviä ongelmia sekä oppimateriaalien digitaalisuuden mukanaan tuomia etuja ja haittoja. Työssä perehdytään digitaalisten oppimateriaalien tuotannon tekniikoihin ja määrittelyihin. Painopisteenä on erityisesti oppisisältöjen metatiedon muodostamiseen tarkoitetut määrittelyt, sekä digitaalisten oppimateriaalien koostamiseen tarkoitettu SCORM-määrittely. Työnpyrkimyksenä on antaa lukijalle laaja kuva siitä, mitkä ovat ne keinot, joiden avulla nykyisillä tekniikoilla voidaan tuottaa uudelleenkäytettävää, laadukasta digitaalista oppimateriaalia.

As production and use of nanomaterials in commercial products grow it is imperative to ensure these materials are used safely with minimal unwanted impacts on human health or the environment. Foremost among the populations of potential concern are workers who handle nanomaterials in a variety of occupational settings, including university laboratories, industrial manufacturing plants and other institutions. Knowledge about prudent practices for handling nanomaterials is being developed by many groups around the world but may be communicated in a way that is difficult for practitioners to access or use. The GoodNanoGuide is a collaborative, open-access project aimed at creating an international forum for the development and discussion of prudent practices that can be used by researchers, workers and their representatives, occupational safety professionals, governmental officials and even the public. The GoodNanoGuide is easily accessed by anyone with access to a web browser and aims to become a living repository of good practices for the nanotechnology enterprise. Semantic Web applications take off is being slower than expected, at least with respect to “real-world” applications and users. One of the main reasons for this lack of adoption is that most Semantic Web user interfaces are still immature from the usability and accessibility points of view. This is due to the novelty of these technologies, but this also motivates the exploration of alternative interaction paradigms, different from the “traditional” Web or Desktop applications ones. Our proposal is realized in the Rhizomer platform, which explores the possibilities of the object–action interaction paradigm at the Web scale. This paradigm is well suited for heterogeneous resource spaces such as those common in the Semantic Web. Resources, described by metadata, correspond to the objects in the paradigm. Semantic web services, which are dynamically associated to these objects, correspond to the actions. The platform is being put into practice in the context of a research project in order to build an open application for media distribution based on Semantic Web technologies. Moreover, its usability and accessibility have been evaluated in this real setting and compared to similar systems.

Awareness is required for supporting all forms of cooperation. In Computer Supported Collaborative Learning (CSCL), awareness can be used for enhancing collaborative opportunities across physical distances and in computer-mediated environments. Shared Knowledge Awareness (SKA) intends to increase the perception about the shared knowledge, students have in a collaborative learning scenario and also concerns the understanding that this group has about it. However, it is very difficult to produce accurate awareness indicators based on informal message exchange among the participants. Therefore, we propose a semantic system for cooperation that makes use of formal methods for knowledge representation based on semantic web technologies. From these semantics-enhanced repository and messages, it could be easier to compute more accurate awareness.
