INTRODUCTION: Around 80% of people are affected by low back pain at least once in their life, often caused by trauma provoking intervertebral disc (IVD) herniation and/or IVD degeneration. Apart from some promising approaches for nucleus pulposus repair, so far no treatment or repair is available for the outer fibrous tissue, annulus fibrosus (AF). We aimed for sealing and repairing an AF injury in a bovine IVD organ culture model in vitro over 14 days under different loading conditions. For this purpose, a silk fleece composite from Bombyx mori silk was combined with genipin-enhanced fibrin hydrogel [1]. METHODS: Bovine IVDs of 12-17 months old animals were isolated by first removing all surrounding tissue, followed by cutting out the IVDs [2]. Culturing of discs occurred in high glucose Dulbecco's Modified Eagle Medium (HG-DMEM) supplemented with 5% serum as previously described. On the next day, injury was induced using a 2mm biopsy punch (Polymed, Switzerland). The formed cavity was filled with (0.4%) genipin-enhanced human based fibrin hydrogel (35- 55mg/mL human fibrinogen, Baxter, Austria) and sealed with a silk fleece-membrane composite (Spintec Engineering, Germany). Different culture conditions were applied: free swelling, static diurnal load of 0.2MPa for 8h/d and complex loading at 0.2MPa compression combined with ± 2° torsion at 0.2Hz for 8h/d. Complex loading was applied by a custom built 2 degree of freedom bioreactor [3]. After 14 days of culture cell activity was determined with resazurin assay. Additionally, glycosaminoglycan (dimethyl-methylene blue), DNA (Hoechst) and collagen content (hydroxy-proline) were determined. Finally, real-time qPCR of major IVD marker genes was performed. RESULTS: The silk seal closing the injury site could successfully withstand the forces of all three loading conditions with no misplacement over the two weeks’ culture. Nevertheless, disc height of the repaired discs did not significantly differ from the injured group. The disc phenotype could be maintained as demonstrated by biochemical analysis of gene expression, cell activity, DNA-, collagen- and GAG content. The silk itself was evaluated to be highly biocompatible for hMSC, as revealed by cytotoxicity assays. DISCUSSION & CONCLUSIONS: The silk can be considered a highly-elastic and biocompatible material for AF closure and the genipin-enhanced fibrin hydrogel has also good biomechanical properties. However, the cyto-compatibility of genipin seems rather poor and other hydrogels and/or cross-linkers should be looked into. REFERENCES: 1 C.C. Guterl et al. The GuRm is a 1.2m tall, 23 degree of freedom humanoid consuucted at the University of Queensland for research into humanoid robotics. The key challenge being addressed by the GuRw projcct is the development of appropriate learning strategies for control and coodinadon of the robot’s many joints. The development of learning strategies is Seen as a way to sidestep the inherent intricacy of modeling a multi-DOP biped robot. This paper outlines the approach taken to generate an appmpria*e control scheme for the joinis of the GuRoo. The paper demonsrrates the determination of local feedback control parameters using a genetic algorithm. The feedback loop is then augmented by a predictive modulator that learns a form of feed-fonward control to overcome the irregular loads experienced at each joint during the gait cycle. The predictive modulator is based on thc CMAC architecture. Results from tats on the GuRoo platform show that both systems provide improvements in stability and tracking of joint control.

Light occlusions are one of the most significant difficulties of photometric stereo methods. When three or more images are available without occlusion, the local surface orientation is overdetermined so that shape can be computed and the shadowed pixels can be discarded. In this paper, we look at the challenging case when only two images are available without occlusion, leading to a one degree of freedom ambiguity per pixel in the local orientation. We show that, in the presence of noise, integrability alone cannot resolve this ambiguity and reconstruct the geometry in the shadowed regions. As the problem is ill-posed in the presence of noise, we describe two regularization schemes that improve the numerical performance of the algorithm while preserving the data. Finally, the paper describes how this theory applies in the framework of color photometric stereo where one is restricted to only three images and light occlusions are common. Experiments on synthetic and real image sequences are presented.

The traffic carried by core optical networks grows at a steady but remarkable pace of 30-40% year-over-year. Optical transmissions and networking advancements continue to satisfy the traffic requirements by delivering the content over the network infrastructure in a cost and energy efficient manner. Such core optical networks serve the information traffic demands in a dynamic way, in response to requirements for shifting of traffics demands, both temporally (day/night) and spatially (business district/residential). However as we are approaching fundamental spectral efficiency limits of singlemode fibers, the scientific community is pursuing recently the development of an innovative, all-optical network architecture introducing the spatial degree of freedom when designing/operating future transport networks. Spacedivision- multiplexing through the use of bundled single mode fibers, and/or multi-core fibers and/or few-mode fibers can offer up to 100-fold capacity increase in future optical networks. The EU INSPACE project is working on the development of a complete spatial-spectral flexible optical networking solution, offering the network ultra-high capacity, flexibility and energy efficiency required to meet the challenges of delivering exponentially growing traffic demands in the internet over the next twenty years. In this paper we will present the motivation and main research activities of the INSPACE consortium towards the realization of the overall project solution. © 2014 Copyright SPIE.

For the first time, we demonstrate the possibility to switch between three distinct pulse regimes in a dissipative dispersion-managed (DM) fibre laser by solely controlling the gain saturation energy. Nonlinear Schrödinger equation based simulations show the transitions between hyper-Gaussian similaritons, parabolic similaritons, and dissipative solitons in the same laser cavity. It is also shown that such transitions exist in a wide dispersion range from all-normal to slightly net-normal dispersion. This work demonstrates that besides dispersion and filter managements gain saturation energy can be a new degree of freedom to manage pulse regimes in DM fibre lasers, which offers flexibility in designing ultrafast fibre lasers. Also, the result indicates that in contrast to conservative soliton lasers whose intensity profiles are unique, dissipative DM lasers show diversity in pulse shapes. The findings not only give a better understanding of pulse shaping mechanisms in mode-locked lasers, but also provide insight into dissipative systems.

Frequency Selective surfaces are increasingly common structures in telecommunication systems due to their geometric and electromagnetic advantages. As a matter of fact, the frequency selective surfaces with fractal geometry type would allow an even bigger reduction of the electrical length which provided greater flexibility in the design of these structures. In this work, we investigated the use of multifractal geometry in frequency selective surfaces. Three structures with different multifractal geometries have been proposed and analyzed. The first structure allowed the design of multiband structures with greater flexibility in controlling the resonant frequencies and bandwidth. The second structure provided a bandwidth increase even with the rising of the fractal level. The third structure showed response with angle stability, dual polarization and provided room for a bandwidth increase with the rising of the structural multifractality. Furthermore, the proposed structures increased the degree of freedom in the multiband designs because they have multiple resonant frequencies ratios between adjacent bands and are easy to deploy. The validation of the proposed structures was initially verified through simulations in Ansoft Designer software and then the structures were constructed and the experimental results obtained

This paper deals with the conceptual design of decoupled, compact, and monolithic XYZ compliant parallel manipulators (CPMs): CUBEs. Position spaces of compliant P (P: prismatic) joints are first discussed, which are represented by circles about the translational directions. A design method of monolithic XYZ CPMs is then proposed in terms of both the kinematic substitution method and the position spaces. Three types of monolithic XYZ CPMs are finally designed using the proposed method with the help of three classes of kinematical decoupled 3-DOF (degree of freedom) translational parallel mechanisms (TPMs). These monolithic XYZ CPMs include a 3-PPP XYZ CPM composed of identical parallelogram modules (a previously reported design), a novel 3-PPPR (R: revolute) XYZ CPM composed of identical compliant four-beam modules, and a novel 3-PPPRR XYZ CPM. The latter two monolithic designs also have extended lives. It is shown that the proposed design method can be used to design other decoupled and compact XYZ CPMs by using the concept of position spaces, and the resulting XYZ CPM is the most compact one when the fixed ends of the three actuated compliant P joints thereof overlap.

Head motion during a Positron Emission Tomography (PET) brain scan can considerably degrade image quality. External motion-tracking devices have proven successful in minimizing this effect, but the associated time, maintenance, and workflow changes inhibit their widespread clinical use. List-mode PET acquisition allows for the retroactive analysis of coincidence events on any time scale throughout a scan, and therefore potentially offers a data-driven motion detection and characterization technique. An algorithm was developed to parse list-mode data, divide the full acquisition into short scan intervals, and calculate the line-of-response (LOR) midpoint average for each interval. These LOR midpoint averages, known as “radioactivity centroids,” were presumed to represent the center of the radioactivity distribution in the scanner, and it was thought that changes in this metric over time would correspond to intra-scan motion.

Several scans were taken of the 3D Hoffman brain phantom on a GE Discovery IQ PET/CT scanner to test the ability of the radioactivity to indicate intra-scan motion. Each scan incrementally surveyed motion in a different degree of freedom (2 translational and 2 rotational). The radioactivity centroids calculated from these scans correlated linearly to phantom positions/orientations. Centroid measurements over 1-second intervals performed on scans with ~1mCi of activity in the center of the field of view had standard deviations of 0.026 cm in the x- and y-dimensions and 0.020 cm in the z-dimension, which demonstrates high precision and repeatability in this metric. Radioactivity centroids are thus shown to successfully represent discrete motions on the submillimeter scale. It is also shown that while the radioactivity centroid can precisely indicate the amount of motion during an acquisition, it fails to distinguish what type of motion occurred.

Three-dimensional printing (“3DP”) is an additive manufacturing technology that starts with a virtual 3D model of the object to be printed, the so-called Computer-Aided-Design (“CAD”) file. This file, when sent to the printer, gives instructions to the device on how to build the object layer-by-layer. This paper explores whether design protection is available under the current European regulatory framework for designs that are computer-created by means of CAD software, and, if so, under what circumstances. The key point is whether the appearance of a product, embedded in a CAD file, could be regarded as a protectable element under existing legislation. To this end, it begins with an inquiry into the concepts of “design” and “product”, set forth in Article 3 of the Community Design Regulation No. 6/2002 (“CDR”). Then, it considers the EUIPO’s practice of accepting 3D digital representations of designs. The enquiry goes on to illustrate the implications that the making of a CAD file available online might have. It suggests that the act of uploading a CAD file onto a 3D printing platform may be tantamount to a disclosure for the purposes of triggering unregistered design protection, and for appraising the state of the prior art. It also argues that, when measuring the individual character requirement, the notion of “informed user” and “the designer’s degree of freedom” may need to be reconsidered in the future. The following part touches on the exceptions to design protection, with a special focus on the repairs clause set forth in Article 110 CDR. The concluding part explores different measures that may be implemented to prohibit the unauthorised creation and sharing of CAD files embedding design-protected products.

L’augmentation exponentielle de la demande de bande passante pour les communications laisse présager une saturation prochaine de la capacité des réseaux de télécommunications qui devrait se matérialiser au cours de la prochaine décennie. En effet, la théorie de l’information prédit que les effets non linéaires dans les fibres monomodes limite la capacité de transmission de celles-ci et peu de gain à ce niveau peut être espéré des techniques traditionnelles de multiplexage développées et utilisées jusqu’à présent dans les systèmes à haut débit. La dimension spatiale du canal optique est proposée comme un nouveau degré de liberté qui peut être utilisé pour augmenter le nombre de canaux de transmission et, par conséquent, résoudre cette menace de «crise de capacité». Ainsi, inspirée par les techniques micro-ondes, la technique émergente appelée multiplexage spatial (SDM) est une technologie prometteuse pour la création de réseaux optiques de prochaine génération. Pour réaliser le SDM dans les liens de fibres optiques, il faut réexaminer tous les dispositifs intégrés, les équipements et les sous-systèmes. Parmi ces éléments, l’amplificateur optique SDM est critique, en particulier pour les systèmes de transmission pour les longues distances. En raison des excellentes caractéristiques de l’amplificateur à fibre dopée à l’erbium (EDFA) utilisé dans les systèmes actuels de pointe, l’EDFA est à nouveau un candidat de choix pour la mise en œuvre des amplificateurs SDM pratiques. Toutefois, étant donné que le SDM introduit une variation spatiale du champ dans le plan transversal de la fibre, les amplificateurs à fibre dopée à l’erbium spatialement intégrés (SIEDFA) nécessitent une conception soignée. Dans cette thèse, nous examinons tout d’abord les progrès récents du SDM, en particulier les amplificateurs optiques SDM. Ensuite, nous identifions et discutons les principaux enjeux des SIEDFA qui exigent un examen scientifique. Suite à cela, la théorie des EDFA est brièvement présentée et une modélisation numérique pouvant être utilisée pour simuler les SIEDFA est proposée. Sur la base d’un outil de simulation fait maison, nous proposons une nouvelle conception des profils de dopage annulaire des fibres à quelques-modes dopées à l’erbium (ED-FMF) et nous évaluons numériquement la performance d’un amplificateur à un étage, avec fibre à dopage annulaire, à ainsi qu’un amplificateur à double étage pour les communications sur des fibres ne comportant que quelques modes. Par la suite, nous concevons des fibres dopées à l’erbium avec une gaine annulaire et multi-cœurs (ED-MCF). Nous avons évalué numériquement le recouvrement de la pompe avec les multiples cœurs de ces amplificateurs. En plus de la conception, nous fabriquons et caractérisons une fibre multi-cœurs à quelques modes dopées à l’erbium. Nous réalisons la première démonstration des amplificateurs à fibre optique spatialement intégrés incorporant de telles fibres dopées. Enfin, nous présentons les conclusions ainsi que les perspectives de cette recherche. La recherche et le développement des SIEDFA offriront d’énormes avantages non seulement pour les systèmes de transmission future SDM, mais aussi pour les systèmes de transmission monomode sur des fibres standards à un cœur car ils permettent de remplacer plusieurs amplificateurs par un amplificateur intégré.

Kompetenzraster sind pädagogische Instrumente, die zum kompetenzorientierten, individualisierten und selbstgesteuerten Lernen in beruflichen Schulen eingesetzt werden. Sie werden üblicherweise im Rahmen eines pädagogischen Gesamtkonzeptes genutzt, indem die Raster oft ein zentrales Instrument in einem komplexen Gefüge schulischer Lern- und Lehrprozesse sind. Kompetenzraster sind häufig der Fixpunkt, an dem sich andere Instrumente (wie Checklisten und Lernjobs) orientieren und sie definieren die Ausgangs- und Zielpunkte der Lernprozesse. Dabei werden den Schülern üblicherweise Freiheitsgrade eingeräumt, so dass sie (mit-) entscheiden ob, was, wann, wie und woraufhin sie lernen. Die schulische Arbeit mit den Rastern kann als ein Versuch angesehen werden, die Lernenden in den Mittelpunkt pädagogischen Denkens und Handelns zu stellen. Dieser Beitrag hat das Ziel, selbstgesteuertes Lernen aus einer distanzierten, vom einzelnen pragmatischen Modell abstrahierenden und eher theoretischen Perspektive auf das individualisierte Lernen mit Kompetenzrastern zu beziehen. Im Kern wird ein Systematisierungsansatz entwickelt, in dem die komplexen Zusammenhänge des Lernens mit Kompetenzrastern im Kontext von selbstgesteuertem Lernen dargestellt werden. Damit soll ein Beitrag zur Elaboration des Lernens mit Kompetenzrastern in beruflichen Schulen geleistet werden. Konkret wird die folgende Frage fokussiert: Was können Kompetenzraster im Rahmen selbstgesteuerten Lernens leisten? (DIPF/Orig.)

Tactile sensing is an important aspect of robotic systems, and enables safe, dexterous robot-environment interaction. The design and implementation of tactile sensors on robots has been a topic of research over the past 30 years, and current challenges include mechanically flexible “sensing skins”, high dynamic range (DR) sensing (i.e.: high force range and fine force resolution), multi-axis sensing, and integration between the sensors and robot. This dissertation focuses on addressing some of these challenges through a novel manufacturing process that incorporates conductive and dielectric elastomers in a reusable, multilength-scale mold, and new sensor designs for multi-axis sensing that improve force range without sacrificing resolution. A single taxel was integrated into a 1 degree of freedom robotic gripper for closed-loop slip detection. Manufacturing involved casting a composite silicone rubber, polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) filled with conductive particles such as carbon nanotubes, into a mold to produce microscale flexible features on the order of 10s of microns. Molds were produced via microfabrication of silicon wafers, but were limited in sensing area and were costly. An improved technique was developed that produced molds of acrylic using a computer numerical controlled (CNC) milling machine. This maintained the ability to produce microscale features, and increased the sensing area while reducing costs. New sensing skins had features as small as 20 microns over an area as large as a human hand. Sensor architectures capable of sensing both shear and normal force sensing with high dynamic range were produced. Using this architecture, two sensing modalities were developed: a capacitive approach and a contact resistive approach. The capacitive approach demonstrated better dynamic range, while the contact resistive approach used simpler circuitry. Using the contact resistive approach, normal force range and resolution were 8,000 mN and 1,000 mN, respectively, and shear force range and resolution were 450 mN and 100 mN, respectively. Using the capacitive approach, normal force range and resolution were 10,000 mN and 100 mN, respectively, and shear force range and resolution were 1,500 mN and 50 mN, respectively.

Since precise linear actuators of a compliant parallel manipulator suffer from their inability to tolerate the transverse motion/load in the multi-axis motion, actuation isolation should be considered in the compliant manipulator design to eliminate the transverse motion at the point of actuation. This paper presents an effective design method for constructing compliant parallel manipulators with actuation isolation, by adding the same number of actuation legs as the number of the DOF (degree of freedom) of the original mechanism. The method is demonstrated by two design case studies, one of which is quantitatively studied by analytical modelling. The modelling results confirm possible inherent issues of the proposed structure design method such as increased primary stiffness, introduced extra parasitic motions and cross-axis coupling motions.

We introduce quantum sensing schemes for measuring very weak forces with a single trapped ion. They use the spin-motional coupling induced by the laser-ion interaction to transfer the relevant force information to the spin-degree of freedom. Therefore, the force estimation is carried out simply by observing the Ramsey-type oscillations of the ion spin states. Three quantum probes are considered, which are represented by systems obeying the Jaynes-Cummings, quantum Rabi (in 1D) and Jahn-Teller (in 2D) models. By using dynamical decoupling schemes in the Jaynes-Cummings and Jahn-Teller models, our force sensing protocols can be made robust to the spin dephasing caused by the thermal and magnetic field fluctuations. In the quantum-Rabi probe, the residual spin-phonon coupling vanishes, which makes this sensing protocol naturally robust to thermally-induced spin dephasing. We show that the proposed techniques can be used to sense the axial and transverse components of the force with a sensitivity beyond the yN/\wurzel{Hz}range, i.e. in the xN/\wurzel{Hz}(xennonewton, 10^−27). The Jahn-Teller protocol, in particular, can be used to implement a two-channel vector spectrum analyzer for measuring ultra-low voltages.
