The premature failure of a horizontal heat-exchanger, which occurred after service exposure at 580 degrees C for 50,000 h, revealed the occurrence of extensive through-thickness cracking in approximately 40% of the tube/stationary tube-sheet welds. Additionally, the internal surface of the welded joint featured intensive secondary intergranular cracking (up to 250 mu m deep), preferential formation of a 150 mu m thick layer of (Fe, Cr)(3)O-4 and internal intergranular oxidation (40 mu m deep). The welded region also showed intense carbon pick-up and, as consequence, severe precipitation of intergranular M7C3 and M23C6 carbides. The fracture surface was composed of two distinct regions: a ""planar"" region of 250 mu m, formed due to the stable crack growth along by the intergranular oxidation; and a slant region with radial marks, formed by the fast crack growth along the network of intergranular carbides. The association of intergranular oxidation pre-cracks with microstructural embrittlement promoted the premature failure, which took place by an overload mechanism, probably due to the jamming of the floating tube-sheet during the maintenance halt (cooling operation). This work aims to study the adsorption of phenol on activated carbons (ACs) and the consecutive in situ regeneration of carbon by Fenton oxidation. Two different operations have been carried Out: (1) a batch procedure in order to investigate the influence of Fe(2+) and H(2)O(2) concentrations; (2) continuous fixed bed adsorption, followed by a batch circulation of the Fenton`s reagent through the saturated AC bed. to examine the efficiency of the real process. Two different activated carbons have been also studied: a both micro- and mesoporous AC (L27) and an only microporous One (S23). In the batch reactor the best conditions found for pollutant mineralization in the homogeneous Fenton system are not the best For AC regeneration: a continuous reduction of adsorption capacity of L27 is observed after 3 oxidations, due to the decrease of both AC weight and surface area. Higher concentration of Fe(2+) and lower concentration of H(2)O(2) (2 times the stoichiometry) lead to a 50% recovery of the initial adsorption capacity during at least four consecutive cycles for L27, while about 20% or less for S23. In the consecutive continuous adsorption/batch Fenton oxidation process, the regeneration efficiency reaches 30-40% for L27 after two cycles whatever the feed concentration and less than 10% for S23. A photo-Fenton test performed on L27 shows almost complete mineralization (contrary to ""dark"" Fenton) and further improves recovery of AC adsorption capacity although not complete (56% after two cycles).

The mechanical properties of Portland cement are closely related to the chemical composition of the clinker and particularly to the concentration of tricalcium silicate, C3S. In the industrial production process, the clinker must be rapidly quenched, to avoid its decomposition into dicalcium silicate and lime and also to avoid the transformation from higher temperature phases to lower temperature phases. This study investigated the kinetics of thermal decomposition of the C3S. Samples of laboratory-made C3S were thermally treated under specific conditions to determine the continuous cooling transformation (CCT) diagram of the material. The CCT diagram of the C3S showed decomposition rates with values that were much higher than the values traditionally accepted in the literature.

Sucrose was used to prepare montmorillonite/carbon nanocomposites by calcination in a reduced atmosphere. The aim was to investigate the changes derived from varying the clay and sucrose content in the resulting material and to change the adsorption properties to evaluate its potential to be used in catalytic applications. X-ray diffraction patterns revealed the formation of an intercalated nanostructure composed of carbon-filled clay mineral layers, which was confirmed by the Fourier transform infrared spectra and thermogravimetry curves. Differences in composition and texture surface were detected by scanning electron microscopy images and were supported by viscosity measurements. These measurements were helpful in understanding why the sample prepared with the highest sucrose content presented the lowest gasoline and methylene blue adsorption results and why the highest adsorption properties were attributed to the sample with the highest clay content. Moreover, BET and BJH studies allowed understanding oleic acid catalytic conversion. Finally, a water flux simulation test was performed to determine the mechanical resistance in comparison to an activated carbon. It was found that the nanocomposites were more resistant, supporting their use in catalytic applications for a longer period of time. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

IBA application for rooting of Eucalyptus benthamii Maiden and Cambage x Eucalyptus dunnii Maiden minicuttings. Eucalyptus has great importance in the forestry sector and many advances in the area of improvement have been achieved with the advent of biotechnological techniques. However, some promising genotypes still do not have multiplication protocols with cloning techniques, such as minicutting. The study aimed to evaluate IBA concentrations for survival, rooting and vegetative vigor of E. benthamii x E. dunnii minicuttings, and determine the maximum technical efficiency dose. Ministumps H12, H19 and H20 clones were cultivated in a clonal minigarden under a semi-hydroponic system. For rooting, the rninicutting basal portion was plunged in hydro-alcoholic solutions, whose concentrations were: 0; 2,000; 4,000; 6,000 and 8,000 mg L(-1) of IBA. The experiment was conducted in a completely randomized design, with the factors consisting of three clones and five IBA concentrations, with five replications, containing 10 minicuttings per replication. IBA positively influenced the minicutting rooting processes, with differentiated behavior between the clones, with 30.32 to 55.45% rooting variation. The positives increments occurred until the highest IBA concentration for H12 and H19 clones. However, the range between 4,000 and 6,000 mg L(-1) of IBA treatments promoted the best rooting results for the H20 clone.

Sunless tanning formulas have become increasingly popular in recent years for their ability to give people convincing tans without the dangers of skin cancer. Most sunless tanners currently on the market contain dihydroxyacetone (DHA), a keto sugar with three carbons. The temporary pigment provided by these formulasis designed to resemble a UV-induced tan. This study evaluated the effectiveness of carbomer gels and cold process self emulsifying bases on skin pigmentation, using different concentrations of a chemical system composed of DHA and N-acetyl tyrosine, which are found in moulted snake skins and their effectiveness was tested by Mexameter (R) MX 18. Eight different sunless tanning formulas were developed, four of which were gels and four of which were emulsions (base, base plus 4.0%, 5.0% and 6.0% (w/w) of a system of DHA and N-acetyl tyrosine). Tests to determine the extent of artificial tanning were done by applying 30 mg cm(-2) of each formula onto standard sizes of moulted snake skin (2.0 cm x 3.0 cm). A Mexameter (R) MX 18 was used to evaluate the extent of coloration in the moulted snake skin at T(0) (before the application) and after 24, 48, 72, 168, 192 and 216 h. The moulted snake skins can be used as an alternative membrane model for in vitro sunless tanning efficacy tests due to their similarity to the human stratum corneum. The DHA concentration was found to influence the initiation of the pigmentation in both sunless tanning systems (emulsion and gel) as well as the time required to increases by a given amount on the tanning index. In the emulsion system, the DHA concentration also influenced the final value on the tanning index. The type of system (emulsion or gel) has no influence on the final value in the tanning index after 216 h for samples with the same DHA concentration.

This work is focused on the influence of dilution rate (0.08 <= D <= 0.32 d(1)) on the continuous cultivation and biomass composition of Arthrospira (Spirulina) platensis using three different concentrations of ammonium chloride (c(No) = 1.0, 5.0 and 10 mol m (3)) as nitrogen source. At c(No) = 1.0 and 5.0 mol m (3) the biomass protein content was an increasing function of D, whereas, when using c(No) = 10 mol m (3), the highest protein content (72.5%) was obtained at D = 0.12 d (1). An overall evaluation of the process showed that biomass protein content increased with the rate of nitrogen supply (D c(No)) up to 72.5% at D c(No) = 1.20 mol m (3) d (1). Biomass lipid content was an increasing function of D only when the nitrogen source was the limiting factor for the growth (D c(No) <= 0.32 mol m (-3) d (1)), which occurred solely with c(No), = 1.0 mol m (3). Under such conditions, A. platensis reduced its nitrogen reserve in the form of proteins, while maintaining almost unvaried its lipid content. The latter was affected only when the concentration of nitrogen was extremely low (c(No) = 1.0 mol m (3)). The most abundant fatty acids were the palmitic (45.8 +/- 5.20%) and the gamma-linolenic (20.1 +/- 2.00%) ones. No significant alteration in the profiles either of saturated or unsaturated fatty acids was observed with c(No) <= 5.0 mol m (3), prevailing those with 16 and 18 carbons. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. This work evaluated chemical interesterification of canola oil (CaO) and fully hydrogenated cottonseed oil (FHCSO) blends, with 20%, 25%, 30%, 35% and 40%(w/w) FHCSO content. Interesterification produced reduction of trisaturated and increase in monounsaturated and diunsaturated triacylglycerols contents, which caused important changes in temperatures and enthalpies associated with the crystallization and melting thermograms. It was verified reduction in medium crystal diameter in all blends, in addition crystal morphology modification. Crystallization kinetics revealed that crystal formation induction period and maximum solid fat content were altered according to FHCSO content in original blends and as a result of random rearrangement. Changes in Avrami constant (k) and exponent (n) indicated, respectively, that interesterification decreased crystallization rates and altered crystalline morphology. However, X-ray diffraction analyses showed randomization did not change the original crystalline polymorphism. The original and interesterified blends had significant predominance of beta` polymorph, which is interesting for several food applications. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

A new class of hybrid molecular sieve silica (MSS) membranes is developed and tested against standard and organic templated membranes. The hybrid membrane is synthesized by the standard sol-gel process, integrating a template (methyltriethoxysilane - MTES) and a C6 surfactant (triethylhexylammonium bromide) into the silica film matrix. After hydro treatment under a relative humidity of 96% for 50h, the hybrid membrane shows no changes in its gas separation capabilities or energy of mobility. The structural characteristics and integrity of the hybrid membrane are retained due to a high concentration of organophilic functional groups and alkoxides observed using 29 Si NMR. In contrast, the structural integrity of the membranes prepared with non-templated films deteriorated during the hydro treatment due to a large percentage of silanol groups (Si-OH) which react with water. The hybrid membranes underwent a decrease in the H2/CO2 selectivity of only 1% whereas for the non-templated membrane a 21% decrease was observed. The transport mechanism of the hybrid membranes is activated as permeation increased with temperature. The activation energy for the permeation of H2 is positive while negative for CO2. The H2 permeation obtained was 3x 10 -8 mol.m -2 .s -1 .Pa -1 and permselectivities for H2/CO2 and H2/N2 varied between 1-7 and 31-34, respectively.

A theoretical analysis is presented to investigate fully developed (both thermally and hydrodynamically) forced convection in a duct of rectangular cross-section filled with a hyper-porous medium. The Darcy-Brinkman model for flow through porous media was adopted in the present analysis. A Fourier series type solution is applied to obtain the exact velocity and temperature distribution within the duct. The case of uniform heat flux on the walls, i.e. the H boundary condition in the terminology of Kays and Crawford [1], is treated. Values of the Nusselt number and the friction factor as a function of the aspect ratio, the Darcy number, and the viscosity ratio are reported.

We report on a quantitative study of the growth process of 87Rb Bose-Einstein condensates. By continuous evaporative cooling we directly control the thermal cloud from which the condensate grows. We compare the experimental data with the results of a theoretical model based on quantum kinetic theory. We find quantitative agreement with theory for the situation of strong cooling, whereas in the weak cooling regime a distinctly different behavior is found in the experiment.

A versatile miniature de Broglie waveguide is formed by two parallel current-carrying wires in the presence of a uniform bias field. We derive a variety of analytical expressions to describe the guide and present a quantum theory to show that it offers a remarkable range of possibilities for atom manipulation on the submicron scale. These include controlled and coherent splitting of the wave function as well as cooling, trapping, and guiding. In particular, we discuss a novel microscopic atom interferometer with the potential to be exceedingly sensitive.

We have measured the spatial diffusion of atoms in a three-dimensional sigma(+)-sigma(-) optical molasses over twenty milliseconds timescale, starting from the initial interaction of the atoms with the molasses. We find that the diffusion constants agree well with a linear model for these short time scales and also compare favourably to other studies of diffusion made over longer time scales. These measurements enable us to quantify the detection method known as freezing molasses. We discuss this method, for detecting and measuring the momentum distribution of cold atoms, which relies on the slow diffusion of atoms in optical molasses to produce a freeze-frame of the spatial distribution of the atoms. This method enables a longer interrogation interval, providing a greatly increased signal-to-noise ratio. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V.

This paper presents a comprehensive and critical review of the mechanisms and kinetics of NO and N2O reduction reaction with coal chars under fluidised-bed combustion conditions (FBC). The heterogeneous reactions of NO and N2O with char/carbon surface have been well recognised as the most important processes in reducing both NOx and N2O in situ FBC. Compared to NO-carbon reactions in FBC, the reactions of N2O with chars have been relatively less understood and studied. Beginning with the overall reaction schemes for both NO and N2O reduction, the paper extensively discusses the reaction mechanisms including the effects of active surface sites. Generally, NO- and N2O-carbon reactions follow a series of step reactions. However, questions remain concerning the role of adsorbed phases of NO and N2O, and the behaviour of different surface sites. Important kinetics factors such as the rate expressions, kinetics parameters as well as the effects of surface area and pore structure are discussed in detail. The main factors influencing the reduction of NO and N2O in FBC conditions are the chemical and physical properties of chars, and the operating parameters of FBC such as temperature, presence of CO, O-2 and pressure. It is shown that under similar conditions, N2O is more readily reduced on the char surface than NO. Temperature was found to be a very important parameter in both NO and N2O reduction. It is generally agreed that both NO- and N2O-carbon reactions follow first-order reaction kinetics with respect to the NO and N2O concentrations. The kinetic parameters for NO and N2O reduction largely depend on the pore structure of chars. The correlation between the char surface area and the reactivities of NO/N2O-char reactions is considered to be of great importance to the determination of the reaction kinetics. The rate of NO reduction by chars is strongly enhanced by the presence of CO and O-2, but these species may not have significant effects on the rate of N2O reduction. However, the presence of these gases in FBC presents difficulties in the study of kinetics since CO cannot be easily eliminated from the carbon surface. In N2O reduction reactions, ash in chars is found to have significant catalytic effects, which must be accounted for in the kinetic models and data evaluation. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.

The potential of using carbonized slash pine bark as a substitute for activated carbon was examined in this study. The bark was carbonized by slow heating in nitrogen for 6.5 h to 672 degrees C. The BET-N-2 surface area, average micropore and mesopore diameter, and micropore volume were 332 m(2) g(-1) 21.7 Angstrom, and 0.125 cm(3) g(-1), respectively. The adsorption capacities for phenol and pentachlorophenol (PCP) at pH 2 and pH 8 were evaluated. The Langmuir equation provided a slightly better fit than the Freundlich equation to two sets of phenol data. The calculated Freundlich constants, K = 0.41 - 0.58 mmol/g/(mmol dm(-3))(1/n) and 1/n = 0.30 - 0.41, were lower and higher, respectively, than literature values for activated carbons. The adsorption capacity of the carbonized bark was much lower for PCP than for phenol. The protonated and anionic PCP isotherms were Type II or III, respectively, in the Brunauer classification. The BET equation provided the best fit to protonated PCP isotherm data. The anionic PCP data were fitted to both the BET model and an equation used in the literature to represent phosphate adsorption on activated carbons. Nonlinear regression of the data for both phenol and PCP adsorption with the Freundlich, Langmuir and BET equations generally gave more accurate parameters, compared with the use of linearized equations to obtain the parameters.
