This paper presents a Variable neighbourhood search (VNS) approach for solving the Maximum Set Splitting Problem (MSSP). The algorithm forms a system of neighborhoods based on changing the component for an increasing number of elements. An efficient local search procedure swaps the components of pairs of elements and yields a relatively short running time. Numerical experiments are performed on the instances known in the literature: minimum hitting set and Steiner triple systems. Computational results show that the proposed VNS achieves all optimal or best known solutions in short times. The experiments indicate that the VNS compares favorably with other methods previously used for solving the MSSP. ACM Computing Classification System (1998): I.2.8.

In September of 2010, Brewer's Bay reef, located in St. Thomas (U.S. Virgin Islands), was simultaneously affected by abnormally high temperatures and the passage of a hurricane that resulted in the mass bleaching and fragmentation of its coral community. An outbreak of a rapid tissue loss disease among coral colonies was associated with these two disturbances. Gross lesion signs and lesion progression rates indicated that the disease was most similar to the Caribbean coral disease white plague type 1. Experiments indicated that the disease was transmissible through direct contact between colonies, and five-meter radial transects showed a clustered spatial distribution of disease, with diseased colonies being concentrated within the first meter of other diseased colonies. Disease prevalence and the extent to which colonies were bleached were both significantly higher on unattached colony fragments than on attached colonies, and disease occurred primarily on fragments found in direct contact with sediment. In contrast to other recent studies, disease presence was not related to the extent of bleaching on colonies. The results of this study suggest that colony fragmentation and contact with sediment played primary roles in the initial appearance of disease, but that the disease was capable of spreading among colonies, which suggests secondary transmission is possible through some other, unidentified mechanism.

Many classical as well as modern optimization techniques exist. One such modern method belonging to the field of swarm intelligence is termed ant colony optimization. This relatively new concept in optimization involves the use of artificial ants and is based on real ant behavior inspired by the way ants search for food. In this thesis, a novel ant colony optimization technique for continuous domains was developed. The goal was to provide improvements in computing time and robustness when compared to other optimization algorithms. Optimization function spaces can have extreme topologies and are therefore difficult to optimize. The proposed method effectively searched the domain and solved difficult single-objective optimization problems. The developed algorithm was run for numerous classic test cases for both single and multi-objective problems. The results demonstrate that the method is robust, stable, and that the number of objective function evaluations is comparable to other optimization algorithms.

Pinewood Estate is a significant resource in the history of the theory and practice of landscape architecture. The purpose of this thesis is to provide a landscape plan to restore the Pinewood Estate to its historic integrity in order to retain and reflect its past. In order to determine the criteria used to establish how and to what period the estate should be restored to, the Secretary of the Interior's Guidelines for the Treatment of Cultural Landscapes was followed. This process involved documenting the existing conditions of the estate. Site inventory and analysis and onsite interviews were conducted. Natural and cultural resources were evaluated. As a case study, McKee Botanical Garden was analyzed and evaluated. The comparison of this case study served as a guideline to determine the best practice for the historical preservation of the estate. Despite the changes in the landscape at Pinewood Estate over the past seventy years, the garden today still retains William Lyman Phillips design criteria. For the garden to continue to keep its historic fabric, rehabilitation was selected to allow for improvements that make possible efficient contemporary use of the estate.

Ocean acidification (OA) threatens calcifying marine organisms including reef-building corals. In this study, we examined the OA responses of individual colonies of the branching scleractinian coral Montipora digitata. We exposed nubbins of unique colonies (n = 15) to ambient or elevated pCO2 under natural light and temperature regimes for 110 days. Although elevated pCO2 exposure on average reduced calcification, individual colonies showed unique responses ranging from declines in positive calcification to negative calcification (decalcification) to no change. Similarly, mortality was greater on average in elevated pCO2, but also showed colony-specific patterns. High variation in colony responses suggests the possibility that ongoing OA may lead to natural selection of OA-tolerant colonies within a coral population.

Sediment samples were collected from the rim of a large vesicomyid clam colony in the Japan Deep Sea Trench. Immediately after sample recovery onboard, the sediment core was sub-sampled for ex situ rate measurements. Sulfate reduction and anaerobic oxidation of methane were measured ex situ by the whole core injection method with three replicate measurements for each method. We incubated the samples at in situ temperature (1.5°C) for 48 hours with either 14C-methane (dissolved in water, 2.5 kBq) or carrier-free 35S-sulfate (dissolved in water, 50 kBq). Sediment was fixed in 25 ml sodium hydroxide (NaOH) solution (2.5%, w/v) or 20 ml ZnAc solution (20%, w/v) for AOM or SR, respectively. Turnover rates were measured as previously described (Kallmeyer et al., 2004; Treude et al., 2003).

The Laws is generally regarded as Plato’s attempt to engage with the practical realities of political life, as opposed to the more idealistic, or utopian, vision of the Republic. Yet modern scholars have often felt disquieted at the central role of religion in the Laws’ second-best city and regime. There are essentially the two dominant interpretations on offer today: either religion supports a repressive theocracy, which controls every aspect of the citizens’ lives to such an extent that even philosophy itself is discouraged, or religion is an example of the kind of noble lie, which the philosopher must deceive the citizens into believing—viz., that a god, not a man, is the author of the regime’s laws. I argue that neither of these interpretations do justice to the dialogue’s intricately dramatic structure, and therefore to Plato’s treatment of civil religion. What I propose is a third position in which Plato both takes seriously the social and political utility of religion, and views theology as a legitimate, and even necessary, subject of philosophical inquiry without going so far as to advocate theocracy as the second best form of regime.

I conclude that a proper focus on the dialogue form, combined with a careful historical analysis of Plato’s use of social and political institutions, reveals an innovative yet traditional form of civil religion, purified of the harmful influence of the poets, based on the authority of the oracle at Delphi, and grounded on a philosophical conception of god as the eternal source of order, wisdom, and all that is good. Through a union of traditional Delphic theology and Platonic natural theology, Plato gives the city of the Laws a common cult acceptable to philosopher and non-philosopher alike, and thus, not only bridges the gap between religion and philosophy, but also creates a sense of community, political identity, and social harmony—the prerequisites for political order and stability. The political theology of the Laws, therefore, provides a rational defense of the rule of law (νόμος) re-conceived as the application of divine Reason (νοῦς) to human affairs.

If C is a stable model category with a monoidal product then the set of homotopy classes of self-maps of the unit forms a commutative ring, [S,S]C. An idempotent e of this ring will split the homotopy category: [X,Y]C≅e[X,Y]C⊕(1−e)[X,Y]C. We prove that provided the localised model structures exist, this splitting of the homotopy category comes from a splitting of the model category, that is, C is Quillen equivalent to LeSC×L(1−e)SC and [X,Y]LeSC≅e[X,Y]C. This Quillen equivalence is strong monoidal and is symmetric when the monoidal product of C is.

It is crucial to understand the microbial community associated with the host when attempting to discern the pathogen responsible for disease outbreaks in scleractinian corals. This study determines changes in the bacterial community associated with Montipora sp. in response to black band disease in Indonesian waters. Healthy, diseased, and dead Montipora sp. (n = 3 for each sample type per location) were collected from three different locations (Pari Island, Pramuka Island, and Peteloran Island). DGGE (Denaturing Gradient Gel Electrophoresis) was carried out to identify the bacterial community associated with each sample type and histological analysis was conducted to identify pathogens associated with specific tissues. Various Desulfovibrio species were found as novelty to be associated with infection samples, including Desulfovibrio desulfuricans, Desulfovibrio magneticus, and Desulfovibrio gigas, Bacillus benzoevorans, Bacillus farraginis in genus which previously associated with pathogenicity in corals. Various bacterial species associated with uninfected corals were lost in diseased and dead samples. Unlike healthy samples, coral tissues such as the epidermis, endodermis, zooxanthellae were not present on dead samples under histological observation. Liberated zooxanthellae and cyanobacteria were found in black band diseased Montipora sp. samples.
