SnO2:m mol% CoO (0.5 less than or equal to m less than or equal to 6.0) ceramic specimens were studied by impedance spectroscopy in the 5 Hz-13 MHz frequency range during heating cold-pressed specimens from room temperature to 1250 degrees C. The electrical resistivity during sintering decreases from 4 to 6 orders of magnitude in the 400-1500 K temperature range depending on the amount of CoO. An increase in electrical resistivity in the 570-670 K range is related to the release of adsorbed water. The results for the 970-1500 K show that the higher the amount of the CoO addition, the lower is the temperature at which SnO2:CoO reaches a minimum electrical resistivity. This suggests that oxygen point defects created by dissolution of cobalt ions in the SnO2 lattice are controlling the densification rate of these ceramics.

PTCR barium titanate has been prepared following two different powder preparation techniques: the solid-state reaction route and co-precipitation route for the comparison of results. The co-precipitation route produces better PTCR characteristics with low room temperature resistivity and better reproducibility of prepared samples. The effects of different concentrations of additives like donors, acceptors and excess titanium have been optimized to get good quality PTCR samples. (C) 2002 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

This work reports the preparation and characterization of (SnO2) thin films doped with 7 mol% Sb2O3. The films were prepared by the polymeric precursor method, and deposited by spin-coating, all of them were deposited on amorphous silica substrate. Then, we have studied the thickness effect on the microstrutural, optical and electric properties of these samples. The microstructural characterization was carried out by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). The electrical resistivity measurements were obtained by the van der Pauw four-probe method. UV-visible spectroscopy and ellipsometry were carried out for the optical characterization. The films present nanometric grains in the order of 13 nm, and low roughness. The electrical resistivity decreased with the increase of the film thickness and the smallest measured value was 6.5 x 10(-3) Omega cm for the 988 nm thick film. The samples displayed a high transmittance value of 80% in the visible region. The obtained results show that the polymeric precursor method is effective for the TCOs manufacturing.

This work describes the influence of the ion bombardment on the electrical, optical and mechanical properties of polymer films deposited from radio-frequency plasmas of benzene. Irradiations were conducted using N+ at 5 x 10(19) ions/m(2), varying the ion energy, E-0, from 0 to 150 keV. Film elemental composition was determined by Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy. Electrical resistivity and hardness were obtained by the two-point probe and nanoindentation technique, respectively. Ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy was employed to investigate the optical constants of the samples. Etching rate was determined by exposure of the films to reactive oxygen plasmas. Ion bombardment induced gradual loss of H and increase in C and O concentrations with Eo. As a consequence the electrical, optical and mechanical properties were drastically affected. Interpretation of these results is proposed in terms of chain cross-linking and unsaturation. (C) 2001 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

The electric properties of (Sn, Ti)O-2 doped with 1.00 mol% CoO, 0.05 mol% Nb2O5 and xmol% La2O3 (0.25 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 1.00) have been studied. Sn0.25Ti0.75Co0.01Nb0.005 doped with 0.50 mol% La2O3 has a nonlinearity coefficient of 6. An increase in the concentration of La2O3 raised its resistivity, thereby altering the electric properties of the material. A thermal treatment in oxygen atmosphere increased the nonlinearity coefficient to a value of 9. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Bacterial cellulose (BC) membranes produced by gram-negative, acetic acid bacteria (Gluconacetobacter xylinus), were used as flexible substrates for the fabrication of Organic Light Emitting Diodes (OLED). In order to achieve the necessary conductive properties indium tin oxide (ITO) thin films were deposited onto the membrane at room temperature using radio frequency (r.f) magnetron sputtering with an r.f. power of 30 W, at pressure of 8 mPa in Ar atmosphere without any subsequent thermal treatment. Visible light transmittance of about 40% was observed. Resistivity, mobility and carrier concentration of deposited ITO films were 4.90 x 10(-4) Ohm cm, 8.08 cm(2)/V-s and -1.5 x 10(21) cm(-3), respectively, comparable with commercial ITO substrates. In order to demonstrate the feasibility of devices based on BC membranes three OLEDs with different substrates were produced: a reference one with commercial ITO on glass, a second one with a SiO(2) thin film interlayer between the BC membrane and the ITO layer and a third one just with ITO deposited directly on the BC membrane. The observed OLED luminance ratio was: 1; 0.5; 0.25 respectively, with 2400 cd/m(2) as the value for the reference OLED. These preliminary results show clearly that the functionalized biopolymer, biodegradable, biocompatible bacterial cellulose membranes can be successfully used as substrate in flexible organic optoelectronic devices. Although conventional rotating machines have been largely used to drive underground transportation systems, linear induction motors are also being considered for future applications owing to their indisputable advantages. A mathematical model for the transient behavior analysis of linear induction motors, when operating with constant r.m.s. currents, is presented in this paper. Operating conditions, like phase short-circuit and input frequency variations and also some design characteristics, such as air-gap and secondary resistivity variations, can be considered by means of this modeling. The basis of the mathematical modeling is presented. Experimental results obtained in the laboratory are compared with the corresponding simulations and discussed in this paper.

Seeds of Astronium fraxinifolium (Anarcadiaceae) were collected in two years, and submitted to tests of seed germination and vigour (first count, aging and electric conductivity), in order to verify the potencial of conservation and if variations in the seed quality presented on association with genetic parameters. Coefficient of heritability in average (ĥm 2) were 0.91 and 0.97 to germination; 0.90 and 0.96 to first count; 0.93 and 0.97 to aging and 0.95 and 0.99 to electric conductivity, for seeds collected in 1997 and 1998, respectively, evidencing a great heritability to all studied characteristics. Genetic variability was influenced more by environmental conditions of blooming and harvest of seeds than storage time.

Objective: the purpose of this study was to determine the effects of prone positioning on cardiorespiratory stability and weaning outcome of preterm infants during weaning from mechanical ventilation. Methods: from January to December 1999, a sample of 42 preterm infants, with birthweight < 2,000 g, mechanically ventilated in the first week of life, were randomly divided, in the beginning of the weaning process, in two groups according to the position: supine position (n = 21) or prone position (n = 21). Heart rate, respiratory rate, transcutaneous oxygen saturation and ventilatory parameters were recorded every one hour. Length of the weaning process and complications were also assessed. Results: in both groups the mean gestational age was 29 weeks, most of the patients presented very low birthweight and respiratory distress syndrome. The mean length of the weaning process was 2 days. There were no differences between the groups regarding respiratory rate, heart rate and transcutaneous oxygen saturation, however, oxygen desaturation episodes were more frequent in supine position (p = 0.009). Ventilatory parameters decreased faster and reintubation was less frequent in the prone group (4% versus 33%). No adverse effects of prone positioning were observed. Conclusion: these results suggest that prone position is a safe and beneficial procedure during the weaning from mechanical ventilation and may contribute to weaning success in preterm infants.

Heat-transfer studies were carried out in a packed bed of glass beads, cooled by the wall, through which air percolated. Tube-to-particle diameter ratios (D/dp) ranged from 1.8 to 55, while the air mass flux ranged from 0.204 to 2.422 kg/m2·s. The outlet bed temperature (TL) was measured by a brass ring-shaped sensor and by aligned thermocouples. The resulting radial temperature profiles differed statistically. Angular temperature fluctuations were observed through measurements made at 72 angular positions. These fluctuations do not follow a normal distribution around the mean for low ratios D/dp. The presence of a restraining screen, as well as the increasing distance between the temperature measuring device and the bed surface, distorts TL. The radial temperature profile at the bed entrance (T0) was measured by a ring-shaped sensor, and T 0 showed to be a function of the radial position, the particle diameter, and the fluid flow rate.
