Um persönlichkeitsbildende Prozesse zu unterstützen und hierbei den Körper nutzbar zu machen, eignen sich Erfahrungen aus der tänzerischen Bewegungsgestaltung, insbesondere durch die explorative Verhaltensweise sowie der Selbst– und Fremdreflektion von Bewegungen, auf besondere Weise. Der Körper ist Instrument, bewegliche Skulptur, internes und externes Kommunikationsvehikel sowie Forschungsobjekt zugleich. Hierbei bieten Tanz und kinästhetische Bewegungslehren als pädagogisches Medium Förderungsbereiche, die auf körperlicher, emotionaler und kognitiver Ebene liegen und in Bezug zum lebendigen Lernen stehen. Tanz als Teilbereich kultureller Bildung steht hierbei in Bezug als ergänzender Curricularer Gegenstand zu fungieren. (DIPF/Autor)

The conference took place at the Penrhyn Road Campus, between 6 and 8 July 2009. This international conference on 'Performing Lives' followed the inaugural conference of the Centre for Life Narratives, 'The Spirit of the Age', the focus of which was 'Writing Lives' (2007). Our second biennial conference 'Performing Lives' (2009) invited analysis and debate on the relationship between life histories and the ways in which they are embodied and enacted in performance, across a range of cultures and a variety of media: drama, dance, film, TV and video.

Since remote times, certain sectors of society have been exposed to inequality and vulnerability, where adequate intervention processes have become conspicuous because of their absence. Nowadays, current societies have the responsibility of contributing, based on their experience and knowledge, with more efficient policies and programs that improve the life quality of the most disadvantaged. It is here where art and its different tools play a very important role, not only on a physical level, but also as an education tool that allows the development of emotional, mental and communicative skills. The aim of this paper is to make clear the potential of art as an instrument of social and educational intervention. It starts by showing worldwide-collected experience related to education and arts, and then, it acquaints the reader with two parallel intervention projects that worked with youths under social vulnerability conditions. These interventions were developed based on a qualitative research (Grounded theory), using as methodology “The Artistic Mediation” with emphasis on body language. This methodology helped researchers to get close to the participants and to know their experiences and emotions. At the same time, it was possible to evidence the positive effects of educative interventions through art. These workshops were based on an artistic methodology especially focused on body language. Data in this work is qualitative, and as such, it permits a special approach to the personal and emotional experiences of the participants; clearly showing the positive effects of the referenced practice on them.

In this short article I feature examples of the creative appropriation and transformation of a protest vehicle such as the petrol bomb. I show that the human imagination can create an aesthetics out of even the street protest, and can creatively carnivalise, play and translocate such practices and violent stances into the dance studio, the theatre, and even the everyday.

In the case of this study about flamenco dance, it is spotlighted how the matter of genders is a recurrent topic and a challenge in terms of creativity. Flamenco is in a perpetual search of a balance between tradition and contemporarily. Circumstance in which it was born, make this search and this constant mutation as part of its essence. When in a performance the representation of man and woman parts are modified according to the “traditional idea”, it brings up existential questions. Flamenco dance, like all the other contemporary forms of dance, reflects its context, contributes to its innovation and interacts with it. It is a social act.

La gráfica se encuentra en un proceso de simbiosis con la cultura visual en el que la tecnología de la imagen, la descentralización de la matriz y la adaptación del formato expositivo se funden con el resto de las actividades artísticas. El análisis de las comunidades formadas alrededor de esta práctica configura un puzzle, aparentemente bien encajado, que se divide entre el formalismo y el conceptualismo y entre la idea y el proceso. Las bienales y trienales, a la vanguardia del discurso, cuestionan cualquier concepto que se haya podido asentar con solidez: ante la decadencia del proceso artesanal el mensaje se profundiza nutriéndose de la invectiva provocada por las contradicciones sociales, territoriales y medioambientales para convertirse en un reflejo de la sociedad contemporánea. Comprender la gráfica actual pasa por un ejercicio de aperturismo y un proceso de adaptación al cambio técnico e iconográfico de los sectores implicados. El grabado es ahora un territorio en el que la integración de todas las artes permite cruzar sus fronteras con fluidez.

En este estudio se evalúa el rendimiento de los métodos de Bag-of-Visualterms (BOV) para la clasificación automática de imágenes digitales de la base de datos del artista Miquel Planas. Estas imágenes intervienen en la ideación y diseño de su producción escultórica. Constituye un interesante desafío dada la dificultad de la categorización de escenas cuando éstas difieren más por los contenidos semánticos que por los objetos que contienen. Hemos empleado un método de reconocimiento basado en Kernels introducido por Lazebnik, Schmid y Ponce en 2006. Los resultados son prometedores, en promedio, la puntuación del rendimiento es aproximadamente del 70%. Los experimentos sugieren que la categorización automática de imágenes basada en métodos de visión artificial puede proporcionar principios objetivos en la catalogación de imágenes y que los resultados obtenidos pueden ser aplicados en diferentes campos de la creación artística.

Choreographer Marie Sallé's Pigmalion of 1735 has long been recognised as one of the most seminal dance works of the period. Yet no choreography survives. This article draws on written, musical, and iconographical evidence of the period to illuminate this previously inaccessible production.

Since the early 1970s, the American electronic media artist Paul DeMarinis (b. 1948, Cleveland, Ohio, USA) has created works that re-imagine modes of communication and reinvent the technologies that enable communication. His works (see Table 1) have taken shape as recordings, performances, electronic inventions, and site-specific and interactive installations; many are considered landmarks in the histories of electronic music and media art. Paul DeMarinis pioneered live performance with computers, collaborated on landmark works with artists like David Tudor and Robert Ashley, undertook several tours with the Merce Cunningham Dance Company, and brought to life obscure technologies such as the flame loudspeaker (featured in his 2004 sculpture Firebirds). His interactive installation The Music Room (1982), commissioned by Frank Oppenheimer for the Exploratorium in San Francisco, was the first automatic music work to reach a significant audience. His album Music As A Second Language (1991) marks one of the most extensive explorations of the synthesized voice and speech melodies to date. Installations like The Edison Effect (1989-1993), in which lasers scan ancient recordings to produce music, and The Messenger (1998/2005), in which electronic mail messages are displayed on alphabetic telegraph receivers, illustrate a creative process that Douglas Kahn (1994) has called "reinventing invention." This project involved creative artists working with older people with dementia and staff from two Belfast Health and Social Care Trust supported housing centres in a mixed programme of dance, painting, music and drama which culminated in an open workshop with relatives and friends of the tenants. The study steered away from traditional medical models of art/music/dance therapy where the participant is perceived as a ‘patient’ in favour of identifying the participant as a ‘student’ who avails of a life-long learning experience. A key premise was that access to the arts is a human right, especially in the context of advancing age and cognitive impairment. . According to one the tenants of Mullan Mews, the project served to ‘awaken - or reawaken - folk with dementia to the endless vista of possibility already in their lives if they will only look for it’. A phenomenographic analysis of video data generated by the project emphasises the importance of the individual experiences of participants in the programme. The evidence from these storylines gained strength from the development of a documentary-style film text that has proved successful in capturing and translating the live experience of the project participants into a supportive text that goes beyond the written word.
