Modelling and control of nonlinear dynamical systems is a challenging problem since the dynamics of such systems change over their parameter space. Conventional methodologies for designing nonlinear control laws, such as gain scheduling, are effective because the designer partitions the overall complex control into a number of simpler sub-tasks. This paper describes a new genetic algorithm based method for the design of a modular neural network (MNN) control architecture that learns such partitions of an overall complex control task. Here a chromosome represents both the structure and parameters of an individual neural network in the MNN controller and a hierarchical fuzzy approach is used to select the chromosomes required to accomplish a given control task. This new strategy is applied to the end-point tracking of a single-link flexible manipulator modelled from experimental data. Results show that the MNN controller is simple to design and produces superior performance compared to a single neural network (SNN) controller which is theoretically capable of achieving the desired trajectory. We investigated how the relative direction of limb movements in external space (iso- and non-isodirectionality), muscular constraints (the relative timing of homologous muscle activation) and the egocentric frame of reference (moving simultaneously toward/away the longitudinal axis of the body) contribute to the stability of coordinated movements. In the first experiment, we attempted to determine the respective stability of isodirectional and non-isodirectional movements in between-persons coordination. In a second experiment, we determined the effect of the relative direction in external space, and of muscular constraints, on pattern stability during a within-person bimanual coordination task. In the third experiment we dissociated the effects on pattern stability of the muscular constraints, relative direction and egocentric frame of reference. The results showed that (1) simultaneous activation of homologous muscles resulted in more stable performance than simultaneous activation of non-homologous muscles during within-subject coordination, and that (2) isodirectional movements were more stable than non-isodirectional movements during between-persons coordination, confirming the role of the relative direction of the moving limbs in the stability of bimanual coordination. Moreover, the egocentric constraint was to some extent found distinguishable from the effect of the relative direction of the moving limbs in external space, and from the effect of the relative timing of muscle activation. In summary, the present study showed that relative direction of the moving limbs in external space and muscular constraints may interact either to stabilize or destabilize coordination patterns. Insulin resistance and diabetes might promote neurodegenerative disease, but a molecular link between these disorders is unknown. Many factors are responsible for brain growth, patterning, and survival, including the insulin-insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-signaling cascades that are mediated by tyrosine phosphorylation of insulin receptor substrate (IRS) proteins. Irs2 signaling mediates peripheral insulin action and pancreatic beta-cell function, and its failure causes diabetes in mice. In this study, we reveal two important roles for Irs2 signaling in the mouse brain. First, disruption of the Irs2 gene reduced neuronal proliferation during development by 50%, which dissociated brain growth from Irs1-dependent body growth. Second, neurofibrillary tangles containing phosphorylated tau accumulated in the hippocampus of old Irs2 knock-out mice, suggesting that Irs2 signaling is neuroprotective. Thus, dysregulation of the Irs2 branch of the insulin-Igf-signaling cascade reveals a molecular link between diabetes and neurodegenerative disease.

Ettringite and thaumasite can be found among the deterioration products of cementitious materials exposed to sulfate and hydrochloric attack. The results of a test program to investigate the acid resistance of self-compacting concrete (SCC) and conventional concrete (CC), immersed up to 18 weeks at 20°C in sulfuric and hydrochloric acid solutions, are described. The SCC was prepared with 47% carboniferous limestone powder, as a replacement for cement, and an ordinary portland cement. The CC was prepared with portland cement only. The water-binder ratios of the SCC and CC were 0.36 and 0.46, respectively. The parameter investigated was the time, in weeks, taken to cause 10% mass loss of fully immersed concrete specimens in a 1% solution of sulfuric acid and the same amount of loss in a 1% solution of hydrochloric acid. The investigation indicated that the SCC performed better than the CC in sulfuric solution but was slightly more vulnerable to hydrochloric acid attack compared to CC. The mode of attack between the two solutions was different.

The potential for performing cellulase-catalyzed reactions on cellulose dissolved in 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([bmim] Cl) has been investigated. We have carried out a systematic study on the irreversible solvent and ionic strength-induced inactivation and unfolding of cellulase from Trichoderma reesei ( E.C.#3.2.1.4). Experiments, varying both cellulase and IL solvent concentrations, have indicated that [bmim] Cl, and several other ILs, as well as dimethylacetamide-LiCl (a well-known solvent system for cellulose), inactivate cellulase under these conditions. Despite cellulase inactivity, results obtained from this study led to valuable insights into the requirements necessary for enzyme activity in IL systems. Enzyme stability was determined during urea, NaCl, and [bmim] Cl-induced denaturation observed through fluorescence spectroscopy. Protein stability of a PEG-supported cellulase in [bmim] Cl solution was investigated and increased stability/activity of the PEG-supported cellulase in both the [bmim] Cl and citrate buffer solutions were detected.
