The Asian rust currently is the main disease of soybean culture, having as characteristics the difficult control, by start at the bottom of plants where penetration of the droplets is harder. The fine droplets has been used with the intention of improve the penetration and increase efficiency of agrochemicals, but that are losses by drift easily. New products have been developed to increase deposition of the drops at targets. The aim of this work was evaluate the TA- 35 capacity to improving the deposition of fungicides spray solution with or without mineral oil by aerial and ground applications. Was used a factorial 3x2, three spray solutions composed by Priori Xtra (concentrated suspension of azoxystrobin 200 g L-1 + cyproconazole 80 g L-1 ) mixed with adjuvants, Nimbus (emulsifiable concentrate containing aliphatic hydrocarbons 428 g L-1 ) and TA-35 (soluble concentrate containing sodium lauryl ether sulfate, surfactants, sequestering agents and emulsifiers), in aerial and ground applications. In ground applications was used 50 L ha-1 , TXA 8002 VS spray nozzles and on aerials was used 15 L ha-1 , Turboaero atomizer, both applying fine droplets. Was utilized the Brilliant Blue (FD & C n. 1) tracer to determine the deposits. There were used glass slides as targets to collect spray droplets. After to extract the tracer of the targets using distilled water, the samples were analyzed by spectrophotometry, thereby was possible quantify the tracer deposited on each glass slide. A study to evaluate possible losses of the tracer by degradation or retention also was done. The comparative analysis of treatments was done by statistical method "Confidence Interval for Differences Between the Averages" with 95% of confidence degree (IC95%). There was degradation or retention of the tracer between the processes of application of the droplets and the processing of the samples. The deposition averages with the presence of TA-35 were greatest for both sprayers however, there were not significant differences among the treatments. The viability of TA-35 use may consider other parameters or complementary studies.

The greenhouse production associated with the fertigation management, have established in Brazil as economical alternative for several horticultural species. With this strategy this study had as aim to evaluate possible impacts in the metabolism of plants of bell pepper (Capsicum annuum L.; cv Elisa) in response to the increase of mineral concentration in the soil. During the experiments, the some nutrient concentrations were altered, to obtain high values of electric conductivity (EC) in the soil solution. The EC values commonly observed in the traditional fertigation system were adopted, as control. It was also verified the possibility of reduction of the mineral stress impact by the application of organic matter in the soil. Parameters of the antioxidative response system, as the superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase enzyme activities besides the proline content were evaluated to measure the extension of the saline stress and their effects on the plants. The increase of EC of the soil induced to the increase of the proline concentration and the SOD activity. Unexpectedly, it was verified that the saline stress inhibited the activity of the enzyme catalase. It was also concluded that the monitoring of EC of the soil is an indispensable tool to reach success in the fertigation system and that the study of the activity of the enzymes of the antioxidative response system, and the proline contents can be assumed as indicators in of the levels of stress in bell pepper plants (Capsicum annuum L.; cv Elisa).

This study aimed to verify the effect of vibration of plants in the production of fruits and seeds and in the physiological quality of the seeds of the “Malagueta” pepper in a protected cultivated area with open and closed sides. The experiment was conducted at the Experimental Farm of the School of Agronomic Sciences of Universidade Estadual Paulista (FCA/UNESP), located in the city of São Manuel (SP). Two treatments were carried out, which consisted of plants that did and did not undergo vibration. Plants were vibrated manually by swinging the wire attached to the supporting bamboo for about 5 seconds, twice a day for 11 weeks. The design was a randomized block with six repetitions. The same experiment was conducted in two protected environments, with and without anti-aphids screens on the sides, cultivated in the same season. For the comparison of environments, a combined analysis was performed considering each environment as a separate experiment. The characteristics evaluated were: weight and number of fruits per plant; weight, diameter and length of fruit; weight and amount of seeds per fruit; and plant height. For the analysis of seed quality, the characteristics evaluated were: germination percentage; first count of germination; dry matter of seedlings; seedling emergence in substrate; and seedling emergence speed index. Regardless of the environment, vibration affects the physiological quality of seeds. The presence of pollinator insects benefited the production and quality of “Malagueta” pepper seeds and increases the fruit weight.

This study aimed at determining the levels of macronutrients (N, P, K, Ca, Mg and S) in grafted plants by contact methods such as bevel, cleft grafting by full rift and approach, as compared to non grafted plants. Analyses were performed in different parts of the plants under fertigation in a greenhouse. The hybrid and rootstock were AF 7125 and AF 8253, respectively. The nutrients were supplied via fertigation during the 150-day cycle. The experiment was carried out at the Teaching, Research and Production Farm in São Manuel city, SP which belongs to FCA-UNESP Campus in Botucatu city/SP. A total of 4 treatments and 5 replications were used. Each plot consisted of 12 plants. Chemical analyses were performed in one plant per plot at 35, 85, 112 and 143 days after transplantation to determine nutrient concentrations. The results showed that the macronutrient concentrations in a decreasing sequence in the vegetative parts (leaf + stem) were as follows: K > N > Ca > Mg > S > P; and in the fruits: K > N > P > S > Mg > Ca. Macronutrient concentrations were similar among grafted plants as compared to ungrafted plants, and the rootstock may have influenced absorption and translocation of minerals in grafted plants.

Observou-se a ocorrência de ferrugem em Malva sylvestris, causada por Puccinia heterospora, no Município de Garanhuns (PE). Esta espécie fúngica é microcíclica e apresenta apenas o estádio sexual, com a produção de teliósporos, com morfologia variada, podendo produzir, em menor número, teliósporos bicelulares do tipo Puccinia e, predominantemente teliósporos unicelulares do tipo Uromyces (mesosporos). A produção abundante de mesosporos é uma das características morfológicas mais marcantes da espécie. Essa ferrugem possui ampla distribuição geográfica, infectando plantas pertencentes à família Malvaceae. Este representa o primeiro registro dessa ferrugem sobre o gênero Malva no Brasil. Uma amostra de referência foi depositada no Herbário Dimitri Sucre Benjamin do Instituto de Pesquisas Jardim Botânico do Rio de Janeiro (JBRJ-RB). São apresentadas a descrição da morfologia do fungo com base na amostra coletada, ilustrações e comentários sobre a distinção entre essa espécie e outras morfologicamente semelhantes. O objetivo deste trabalho foi comparar três métodos para determinação do número de grupos em estudos com aplicação de métodos hierárquicos de agrupamentos, baseando-se em dados obtidos a partir da caracterização de acessos de Capsicum, de modo a identificar aquele com maior poder de discriminação. Os métodos de Mojena, de Tocher e o método RMSSTD foram aplicados com a finalidade de determinar o número ideal de grupos formados na fase final do procedimento de agrupamento com o método UPGMA. Foram analisados 49 acessos da espécie Capsicum chinense do Banco de Germoplasma de Hortaliças da Universidade Federal de Viçosa, em relação a dez características morfológicas com o intuito de identificar e agrupar os acessos mais similares, tornando possível a seleção de genótipos superiores, ou seja, com as características comerciais de interesse. Os resultados mostraram que o método RMSSTD permitiu concluir sobre a existência de sete grupos, evidenciando um maior poder de discriminação para este método, em relação ao método de otimização de Tocher e ao método de Mojena, que formaram respectivamente, quatro e três grupos.

Un discreto numero di molecole biologicamente attive contenute nei cibi vegetali si suppone esercitino un ruolo preventivo e favorevole su molteplici funzioni dell’organismo, con meccanismi d’azione spesso legati alla modulazione diretta e indiretta dello stress ossidativo. Acido ascorbico, tocoferoli, carotenoidi, polifenoli, posseggono attività antiossidante e giocano un ruolo positivo nella conservazione dello stato di salute. L’elevato contenuto di essi nei peperoni dolci (Capsicum Annuum L.) ha incrementato l’interesse nei confronti di questi vegetali da parte del settore agronomico e dell’industria alimentare. È tuttavia noto che la concentrazione di composti bioattivi può essere molto diversa anche tra cultivar della stessa specie vegetale ed è pertanto importante evidenziare il contenuto quali-quantitativo delle varie molecole nelle diverse cultivar di peperoni dolci, in modo da evidenziare le più ricche di tali componenti. Occorre però tenere conto anche della biodisponibilità e bioaccessibilità dei diversi componenti funzionali. Infatti il possibile effetto positivo di tali molecole non dipende solo dal loro contenuto nell’alimento ma soprattutto dalla quantità che viene rilasciata dalla matrice alimentare durante il processo digestivo, e che quindi risulta essere potenzialmente biodisponibile e attivo nell’organismo. Scopo della ricerca presentata è stato valutare e confrontare la digeribilità e la bioaccessibilità di alcuni composti bioattivi antiossidanti in peperoni dolci rossi e gialli appartenenti a due diverse cultivar, Lamuyo e Corno di Toro. Il contenuto fenolico totale e di vitamina C, l’attività antiossidante totale sono stati determinati nei campioni di peperone digeriti in vitro, e comparati ai prodotti freschi, evidenziando differenze significative in termini di bioaccessibilità in particolare tra i peperoni rossi delle due cultivar. Sebbene il processo di digestione in vitro sia una simulazione parziale ed incompleta di quanto accade in vivo, la valutazione di un alimento dopo averlo sottoposto a tale processo rappresenta un importante progresso nello studio delle proprietà e del valore nutrizionale degli alimenti.

PURPOSE To report a case of conjunctival proliferation in a 2.5-year-old boy after initial evidence of a mild chemical injury after ocular exposure to pepper spray (oleoresin capsicum). METHODS Case report with ophthalmologic and histologic findings. RESULTS A child presented with mild conjunctival injection and chemosis without any corneal erosion after direct exposure to pepper spray. Three weeks later, a significant conjunctival proliferation was found at the limbus, which was refractory to treatment with topical corticosteroids. Finally, proliferative tissue was surgically excised without clinical recurrence during 2 months of follow-up. CONCLUSIONS We hypothesize that the young age of the patient may have been an important factor for the severe conjunctival proliferation in comparison to a mainly uncomplicated course of pepper spray injuries in most adults. We recommend the use of topical antiinflammatory treatment even in apparently mild pepper spray injuries, especially in young children.
