The twin-city model has found to increase economical activity and well-being. The similar economical, social and cultural background of Finland and Estonia as well as the EU integration give good preconditions to create a twin-city of Helsinki and Tallinn. The relatively long distance between Helsinki and Tallinn is challenging. Therefore, good transport infrastructure and functioning connections are required to form a twin-city of Helsinki and Tallinn. The connections between these cities can be considered also in broader perspective than only from the viewpoint of the twin-city concept. New markets areas have been emerged in Europe due to collapse of planned economy and integration of Europe. Also the transport routes to the markets are changing. The Hel-sinki-Tallinn sea route can be considered as a fast route to the new markets in the Cen-tral and Eastern Europe. The Helsinki-Tallinn sea route is also a potential route to the Western European markets. This study provides an analysis of transport and cargo flows between Finland and Esto-nia for regional and local planners. The main purpose of the study is to clarify the pre-sent situation of the seaborne cargo flows on the Helsinki-Tallinn route and how the cargo flows will develop in the future. The study focuses on the following thematic enti-ties: the Finnish and Estonian seaborne transport system and cargo flows, the structure and volume of the cargo flows on the Helsinki-Tallinn route, the hinterland cargo flows on the Helsinki-Tallinn route and the transport methods used on the Helsinki-Tallinn route. The study was carried out as a desk research, a statistical analysis and an inter-view study during the spring–autumn 2011. The study reveals that during the period 2002–2010 the volume of the seaborne cargo traffic between Finland and Estonia has increased significantly while the trend of the trade volume between Finland and Estonia has remained nearly constant. This indicates that the route via Estonia is increasingly used in the Finnish foreign trade. Because the ports of Helsinki and Tallinn are the main ports in the cargo traffic between Finland and Estonia, the role of the Helsinki-Tallinn route as a sea leg in the hinterland connections of Finland has increased. The growth of the cargo volume on the Helsinki-Tallinn route was estimated to continue on the annual level of 10 % during the next couple of years. In the long run the growth of the cargo volumes depends on the economical and indus-trial development of the former Eastern European countries. If the IMO’s sulphur regu-lations will come in force, the Helsinki-Tallinn route will become one of the main routes also to the Western European markets, besides of the route via Sweden. The study also shows that the fast and reliable connections year round on the Helsinki-Tallinn route have made it possible for service and logistics companies to reconsider their logistics strategies in a new way in the both side of the Gulf of Finland. Anyway, the ropax concept is seen as the only economical profitable solution on the Helsinki-Tallinn route because cargo and passenger traffic are supporting each other. The trucks (vehicle combinations) will remain the main mode of transport on the Helsinki-Tallinn route because general cargo is the main commodity on the route. IMO’s sulphur regula-tions and the changes in the structure of the Finnish industry may create prerequisites for rail road transport in the hinterland connections of Finland. The objective of this thesis was to study the role of capabilities in purchasing and supply management. For the pre-understanding of the research topic, purchasing and supply management development and the multidimensional, unstructured and complex nature of purchasing and supply management performance was studied in literature review. In addition, a capability-based purchasing and supply management performance framework were researched and structured for the empirical research. Due to the unstructured nature of the research topic, the empirical research is three-pronged in this study including three different research methods: the Delphi method, semi-structured interview, and case research. As a result, the purchasing and supply management capability assessment tool was structured to measure current level of capabilities and impact of capabilities on purchasing and supply management performance. The final results indicate that capabilities are enablers of purchasing and supply management performance, and therefore critical to purchasing and supply performance.

The rural electrification is characterized by geographical dispersion of the population, low consumption, high investment by consumers and high cost. Moreover, solar radiation constitutes an inexhaustible source of energy and in its conversion into electricity photovoltaic panels are used. In this study, equations were adjusted to field conditions presented by the manufacturer for current and power of small photovoltaic systems. The mathematical analysis was performed on the photovoltaic rural system I-100 from ISOFOTON, with power 300 Wp, located at the Experimental Farm Lageado of FCA/UNESP. For the development of such equations, the circuitry of photovoltaic cells has been studied to apply iterative numerical methods for the determination of electrical parameters and possible errors in the appropriate equations in the literature to reality. Therefore, a simulation of a photovoltaic panel was proposed through mathematical equations that were adjusted according to the data of local radiation. The results have presented equations that provide real answers to the user and may assist in the design of these systems, once calculated that the maximum power limit ensures a supply of energy generated. This real sizing helps establishing the possible applications of solar energy to the rural producer and informing the real possibilities of generating electricity from the sun.

Hen eggs and oats (Avena Sativa) are important materials for the food industry. Today, instead of merely satisfying the feeling of hunger, consumers are asking for healthier, biologically active and environmentally friendly products. The growing awareness of consumers’ increasing demands presents a great challenge to the food industry to develop more sustainable products and utilise modern and effective techniques. The modification of yolk fatty acid composition by means of feed supplements is well understood. Egg yolk phospholipids are polar lipids and are used in several applications including food, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and special nutrients. Egg yolk phospholipids are excellent emulsifiers, typically sold as mixtures of phospholipids, triacylglycerols, and cholesterol. However, highly purified and characterised phospholipids are needed in several sophisticated applications. Industrial fractionation of phospholipids is usually based on organic solvents. With these fractionation techniques, some harmful residues of organic solvents may cause problems in further processing. The objective of the present study was to investigate the methods to improve the functional properties of eggs, to develop techniques to isolate the fractions responsible for the specific functional properties of egg yolk lipids, and to apply the developed techniques to plant-based materials, too. Fractionation techniques based on supercritical fluids were utilised for the separation of the lipid fractions of eggs and oats. The chemical and functional characterisation of the fractions were performed, and the produced oat polar lipid fractions were tested as protective barrier in encapsulation processes. Modifying the fatty acid compositions of egg yolks with different types of oil supplements in feed had no affect on their functional or sensory properties. Based on the results of functional and sensory analysis, it is evident that eggs with modified fatty acid compositions are usable in several industrial applications. These applications include liquid egg yolk products used in mayonnaise and salad dressings. Egg yolk powders were utilised in different kinds of fractionation processes. The precipitation method developed in this study resembles the supercritical anti-solvent method, which is typically used in the pharmaceutical industry. With pilot scale supercritical fluid processes, non-polar lipids and polar lipids were successfully separated from commercially produced egg yolk powder and oat flakes. The egg and oat-based polar lipid fractions showed high purities, and the corresponding delipidated fractions produced using supercritical techniques offer interesting starting materials for the further production of bioactive compounds. The oat polar lipid fraction contained especially digalactosyadiacylglycerol, which was shown to have valuable functional properties in the encapsulation of probiotics.

Pikavippi on nykykäsityksen mukaan vakuudeton, lyhytaikainen, euromääräisesti pienehkö luotto, joka hankitaan yleensä joko tekstiviestillä tai Internetissä täytettävällä hakemuksella. Luotto maksetaan hakijan tilille asiakkaan suostuttua luotontarjoajan ehtoihin luottotietojen tarkistuksen jälkeen. Tutkielmassa on selvitetty millainen oli lainsäädännöllinen lähtötilanne, kun pikavipit tulivat markkinoille. Lisäksi halusin selvittää lainsäätäjän toimia alaa kohtaan, sekä selvittää ovatko pikaluotot koronkiskontaa tai ovatko ne sitä joskus olleet. Tutkielma toteutettiin lainopillista ja de lege ferenda – menetelmiä käyttäen. Lainsäätäjä on tehnyt kaksi merkittävää lainmuutospakettia pikaluottoja kohtaan erityisesti kuluttajansuojan parantamiseksi. Pikaluotot eivät ole täyttäneet missään vaiheessa koronkiskonnan tunnusmerkistöä. Jos maksamattomat luotot päätyvät oikeuteen perittäviksi niin perintäkulut muodostuvat lain asettamien taulukkohintojen mukaisesti, vaikka kuluttajasta saattaa tuntua kohtuuttomalta maksaa suuria perintäkuluja. Mikäli pikaluotot kielletään, siirtynevät lyhytaikaisten pienluottojen markkinat ainakin osittain pimeille markkinoille tai tarjolle tulee lakia kiertäviä korvaavia lainatuotteita.

The target of the thesis is to improve product profitability control in continuous IT-services. Accurate product cost accounting and correctly allocated revenues are a necessity for good product profitability control. The focus of the study is on costs and revenues that are not traced directly to services. The thesis is focused on revenue allocations as revenue allocation methods have not been used in the case company before. In order to achieve the target revenue allocation methods, which improve the product profitability accounting and control, are presented. The research methods used in the thesis are literature review and empirical case study. The research approach is constructive. The theoretical part is composed of literature and articles that create a base for the empirical part. Internal interviews describe the current situation in the company and based on it development actions are planned. The part of the empirical case study is seen mostly in the limitations as the research is limited to concern only one department in the company. Problems in the revenue tracing are caused by customer specific services and lack of service definitions because of which the revenues are not traced correctly. Methods to allocate revenues are presented in the thesis and stand-alone revenue allocation method is the most suitable one because it is fair and it can be modified. Approximate product profitability analysis is done in the thesis and the results of it indicate that some services are profitable and some unprofitable.

ABSTRACTObjective:to compare the frequency and the severity of diagnosed injuries between pedestrians struck by motor vehicles and victims of other blunt trauma mechanisms.Methods:retrospective analysis of data from the Trauma Registry, including adult blunt trauma patients admitted from 2008 to 2010. We reviewed the mechanism of trauma, vital signs on admission and the injuries identified. Severity stratification was carried using RTS, AIS-90, ISS e TRISS. Patients were assigned into group A (pedestrians struck by motor vehicle) or B (victims of other mechanisms of blunt trauma). Variables were compared between groups. We considered p<0.05 as significant.Results:a total of 5785 cases were included, and 1217 (21,0%) of which were in group A. Pedestrians struck by vehicles presented (p<0.05) higher mean age, mean heart rate upon admission, mean ISS and mean AIS in head, thorax, abdomen and extremities, as well as lower mean Glasgow coma scale, arterial blood pressure upon admission, RTS and TRISS. They also had a higher frequency of epidural hematomas, subdural hematomas, subarachnoid hemorrhage, brain swelling, cerebral contusions, costal fractures, pneumothorax, flail chest, pulmonary contusions, as well as pelvic, superior limbs and inferior limbs fractures.Conclusion:pedestrian struck by vehicles sustained intracranial, thoracic, abdominal and extremity injuries more frequently than victims of other blunt trauma mechanism as a group. They also presented worse physiologic and anatomic severity of the trauma.

Tutkimuksen tavoitteena oli selvittää, mikä merkitys investointilaskelmilla on kohdeyrityksen investointipäätöksen teossa ja miten epävarmuus investointilaskelmissa voidaan ottaa huomioon. Tutkimus perustuu kvalitatiivisiin eli laadullisiin tutkimusmenetelmiin. Tutkimuksen teoreettinen viitekehys käsittelee investointilaskelmien tuottamaa informaatiota ja millä perusteella yritykset valitsevat investointilaskentamenetelmän yritykseen. Empiirisen osuuden tiedonhankinnassa hyödynnettiin tapaustutkimusta. Tutkimus osoitti, että kohdeyrityksessä koetaan tärkeäksi analysoida investointihankkeita eri arviointimenetelmillä. Yrityksellä on halu kehittää investointilaskentaa perinteisen takaisinmaksuajan menetelmän rinnalle. Myös herkkyysanalyysin merkitys nousi esille.

Tämän Pro Gradu -tutkielman tavoitteena on tutkia mitkä tekijät vaikuttavat yritysjärjestelyn toteutuneeseen kauppahintaan. Lisäksi tämä tutkimus pyrkii vastaamaan mikä on ulkoisen neuvonantajan rooli kauppahinnan muodostumisessa sekä miten ulkoinen neuvonantaja suoriutuu erilaisista yritysjärjestelyistä. Tutkimuksen syntyä motivoi vähäinen tutkimusten määrä pienten yritysten yritysjärjestelyistä; yritysjärjestelyt toteutetaan usein puutteellisilla resursseilla ja epäonnistuneet yritysjärjestelyt nähdään uhkana Euroopan unionin talouskasvulle. Empiirinen tutkimus koostuu 104 toteutuneesta pienen yrityksen yritysjärjestelyn tilastollisesta analyysistä. Pääsääntöisesti otosta on tutkittu keskiarvovertailulla (Ttesti ja Oneway Anova) sekä korrelaatiotestauksella. Tutkimuksen tulokset osoittavat, että arvonmääritys on merkittävimmin kauppahintaan vaikuttava tekijä. Tämän lisäksi tilinpäätöstiedoilla on positiivinen yhteys kauppahintaan, kun taas myyntiajalla tai preemiolla ei ole yhteyttä kauppahintaan. Sekä osake- ja liiketoimintakaupan että sukupolvenvaihdosten ja yrityskauppojen välillä tehty keskiarvovertailu osoittaa, että ulkoinen neuvonantaja suoriutuu ammattitaitoisesti erilaisista yritysjärjestelytilanteista osaten huomioida näihin liittyviä erityispiirteitä.

The objective of this study was to find out the factors that affect customer profitability in the not-for-profit case company. The customer profitability was examined in two different segments of the customer base. The effects that price, cost and the amount of services provided have on the profit margin were studied. The distribution of profitability among the customers and the effect of certain characteristics, such as size of the customer measured in services purchased, on the profitability were analyzed. The theoretical framework was built around customer profitability and the use of customer profitability information in a not-for-profit organization. The present use of customer profitability information and the possibilities of using the results of this research in the case company were presented. Quantitative research methods were used in the empirical part of the study. The results indicate that the two customer segments have differences in their buying behaviors which affect the profitability and thus the measures taken to improve the profitability should be considered with the different characteristics of the customers in mind. Finally the limitations of the study were discussed as possible further research topics.

This thesis describes an approach to overcoming the complexity of software product management (SPM) and consists of several studies that investigate the activities and roles in product management, as well as issues related to the adoption of software product management. The thesis focuses on organizations that have started the adoption of SPM but faced difficulties due to its complexity and fuzziness and suggests the frameworks for overcoming these challenges using the principles of decomposition and iterative improvements. The research process consisted of three phases, each of which provided complementary results and empirical observation to the problem of overcoming the complexity of SPM. Overall, product management processes and practices in 13 companies were studied and analysed. Moreover, additional data was collected with a survey conducted worldwide. The collected data were analysed using the grounded theory (GT) to identify the possible ways to overcome the complexity of SPM. Complementary research methods, like elements of the Theory of Constraints were used for deeper data analysis. The results of the thesis indicate that the decomposition of SPM activities depending on the specific characteristics of companies and roles is a useful approach for simplifying the existing SPM frameworks. Companies would benefit from the results by adopting SPM activities more efficiently and effectively and spending fewer resources on its adoption by concentrating on the most important SPM activities.

Tutkimuksen tavoitteena oli kuvata sekä määrittää case-yrityksen hankintaosaamisen nykytila. Nykytila-analyysin tarkoituksena oli muodostaa lähtökohdat hankintatoimen kehittämiselle case-yrityksessä. Yksi tavoite oli myös tutkia hankinnan sähköisten työkalujen vaikutusta hankintaosaamiseen. Kirjallisuuden osalta tutkimuksessa hyödynnettiin resurssipohjaisen näkökulmaa sekä dynaamisten kyvykkyyksien lähestymistapaa kuvaamaan hankintaosaamisen sekä -kyvykkyyksien vaikutusta hankintatoimen suorituskykyyn. Empiirisen tutkimuksen aineisto on koottu hyödyntämällä kyselytutkimusta, ryhmähaastattelua sekä puolistrukturoitua haastattelua. Tutkimustulokset kuvaavat laaja-alaisesti case-yrityksen hankintaosaamisen nykytilan sekä hankintatoimen aseman yrityksessä yleisesti. Johtopäätöksissä on nostettu esiin keskeisten tutkimustuloksien lisäksi myös kehittämisen kannalta huomioitavia tekijöitä.

The birth of Internet technologies, the developments of fast fashion and multiple retailing channels have created a need for a new, more integrated way for doing retailing. Agility in fast fashion retailing could be seen as a significant way of responding to these changes and furthermore, as a way to respond to consumers’ altering demands. The purpose of this study was to explore the ways in which agile supply chains and integrated multichannel retailing influence the international fast fashion retailing. A framework for agility in retail was developed based on available theoretical considerations in distribution and communication channels. Qualitative research methods and qualitative content analysis were used. Four expert interviews were carried out to gain new perspectives to the objectives. The rest of the data was collected from an industry specific document, expert video and two expert lectures. Following the data collection, the research material was analyzed with qualitative content analysis. The empirical findings on agility in retail were presented based on a coding frame. It was found that agility in retail has multiple parts, which are overlapping and affecting one another. Furthermore, instead of viewing the agile supply chain and integrated multichannel retailing separately of each other as usual, it was found that they should be integrated, and the term “agility” was proposed to denote this approach. Also, it was found that the most common drivers and constrains of integrated multichannel retailing were the new Internet technologies and customer demand. Brick-and-mortar store, online store, mobile devices and social media were found to be the most common retailing channels. Furthermore, in-store technology, click-and-collect approach, NFC-buying, RFID-technology as well as 3D- digital simulations on fabrics and patterns will enhance agility even more in the future. In addition, environmental issues, customer experiences and communication will be important factors. This study has provided new practical insights for the future retailing. Furthermore, it has contributed to the academic research by discussing the traditional approaches of agility in fast fashion retail and bringing in new insights.

The Travel and Tourism field is undergoing changes due to the rapid development of information technology and digital services. Online travel has profoundly changed the way travel and tourism organizations interact with their customers. Mobile technology such as mobile services for pocket devices (e.g. mobile phones) has the potential to take this development even further. Nevertheless, many issues have been highlighted since the early days of mobile services development (e.g. the lack of relevance, ease of use of many services). However, the wide adoption of smartphones and the mobile Internet in many countries as well as the formation of so-called ecosystems between vendors of mobile technology indicate that many of these issues have been overcome. Also when looking at the numbers of downloaded applications related to travel in application stores like Google Play, it seems obvious that mobile travel and tourism services are adopted and used by many individuals. However, as business is expected to start booming in the mobile era, many issues have a tendency to be overlooked. Travelers are generally on the go and thus services that work effectively in mobile settings (e.g. during a trip) are essential. Hence, the individuals’ perceived drivers and barriers to use mobile travel and tourism services in on-site or during trip settings seem particularly valuable to understand; thus this is one primary aim of the thesis. We are, however, also interested in understanding different types of mobile travel service users. Individuals may indeed be very different in their propensity to adopt and use technology based innovations (services). Research is also switching more from investigating issues of mobile service development to understanding individuals’ usage patterns of mobile services. But designing new mobile services may be a complex matter from a service provider perspective. Hence, our secondary aim is to provide insights into drivers and barriers of mobile travel and tourism service development from a holistic business model perspective. To accomplish the research objectives seven different studies have been conducted over a time period from 2002 – 2013. The studies are founded on and contribute to theories within diffusion of innovations, technology acceptance, value creation, user experience and business model development. Several different research methods are utilized: surveys, field and laboratory experiments and action research. The findings suggest that a successful mobile travel and tourism service is a service which supports one or several mobile motives (needs) of individuals such as spontaneous needs, time-critical arrangements, efficiency ambitions, mobility related needs (location features) and entertainment needs. The service could be customized to support travelers’ style of traveling (e.g. organized travel or independent travel) and should be easy to use, especially easy to take into use (access, install and learn) during a trip, without causing security concerns and/or financial risks for the user. In fact, the findings suggest that the most prominent barrier to the use of mobile travel and tourism services during a trip is an individual’s perceived financial cost (entry costs and usage costs). It should, however, be noted that regulations are put in place in the EU regarding data roaming prices between European countries and national telecom operators are starting to see ‘international data subscriptions’ as a sales advantage (e.g. Finnish Sonera provides a data subscription in the Baltic and Nordic region at the same price as in Finland), which will enhance the adoption of mobile travel and tourism services also in international contexts. In order to speed up the adoption rate travel service providers could consider e.g. more local initiatives of free Wi-Fi networks, development of services that can be used, at least to some extent, in an offline mode (do not require costly network access during a trip) and cooperation with telecom operators (e.g. lower usage costs for travelers who use specific mobile services or travel with specific vendors). Furthermore, based on a developed framework for user experience of mobile trip arrangements, the results show that a well-designed mobile site and/or native application, which preferably supports integration with other mobile services, is a must for true mobile presence. In fact, travel service providers who want to build a relationship with their customers need to consider a downloadable native application, but in order to be found through the mobile channel and make contact with potential new customers, a mobile website should be available. Moreover, we have made a first attempt with cluster analysis to identify user categories of mobile services in a travel and tourism context. The following four categories were identified: info-seekers, checkers, bookers and all-rounders. For example “all-rounders”, represented primarily by individuals who use their pocket device for almost any of the investigated mobile travel services, constituted primarily of 23 to 50 year old males with high travel frequency and great online experience. The results also indicate that travel service providers will increasingly become multi-channel providers. To manage multiple online channels, closely integrated and hybrid online platforms for different devices, supporting all steps in a traveler process should be considered. It could be useful for travel service providers to focus more on developing browser-based mobile services (HTML5-solutions) than native applications that work only with specific operating systems and for specific devices. Based on an action research study and utilizing a holistic business model framework called STOF we found that HTML5 as an emerging platform, at least for now, has some limitations regarding the development of the user experience and monetizing the application. In fact, a native application store (e.g. Google Play) may be a key mediator in the adoption of mobile travel and tourism services both from a traveler and a service provider perspective. Moreover, it must be remembered that many device and mobile operating system developers want service providers to specifically create services for their platforms and see native applications as a strategic advantage to sell more devices of a certain kind. The mobile telecom industry has moved into a battle of ecosystems where device makers, developers of operating systems and service developers are to some extent forced to choose their development platforms.

This research is an analysis of the value and content of local service offerings that enable longer periods of living at home for elderly people. Mobile health care and new distribution services have provided an interesting solution in this context. The research aim to shed light on the research question, ‘How do we bundle services based on different customer needs?’ A research process consisting of three main phases was applied for this purpose. During this process, elderly customers were segmented, the importance of services was rated and service offerings were defined. Value creation and service offering provides theoretical framework for the research. The target group is South Karelia’s 60 to 90-year old individuals and the data has been acquired via a postal questionnaire. Research has been conducted as exploratory research utilizing the methods of quantitative and social network analysis. The main results of the report are identified customer segments and service packages that fits to the segments’ needs. The results indicate the needs of customers and the results are additionally analysed from the producer’s point of view. In addition to the empirical results, the used theory framework has been developed further in order for the service-related theories to be seen from the customer’s point of view and not just from the producer’s point of view.
