This paper compiles available information on osteological and other anatomical specimens of at least 51 species of aquatic mammals (34 extant, one recently extinct and 16 fossil) collected in Mexico between 1868 and 1990 and housed in 29 scientific institutions (18 in the USA, nine in Mexico, one in the Netherlands, and one in England). These collections contain a total of 1427 specimens representing 10 families of odontocetes (Squalodontidaet , Rhabdosteidaet , Pontoporiidae, Albireonidaet , Monodontidae, Phocoenidae, Delphinidae, Ziphiidae, Kogiidae, and Physeteridae), three of mysticetes (Cetotheridaet , Eschrichtiidae, and Balaenopteridae), three of carnivores (Otariidae, Phocidae, and Mustelidae) and one of sirenians (Trichechidae). Of the aquatic mammals recorded from Mexico, seven species are not represented by specimens (Stenella frontalis, Lagenodelphis hosei, Feresa attenuata, Hyperoodon sp., Eubalaena glacialis, Balaenoptera borealis, and Enhydra lutris). We investigate the carrier-wave Rabi flopping effects in an asymmetric semiparabolic semiconductor quantum well (QW) with few-cycle pulse. It is found that higher spectral components of few-cycle ultrashort pulses in the semiparabolic QW depend crucially on the carrier-envelope phase (CEP) of the few-cycle ultrashort pulses: continuum and distinct peaks can be achieved by controlling the CEP. Our results demonstrate that by adjusting the CEP of few-cycle ultrashort pulses, the intersubband dynamics in the asymmetric semiparabolic QW can be controlled in an ultrashort timescale with moderate laser intensity. Seasonal changes and flooding have an extraordinarily great influence on the drift of organisms. The free water space plays the main part in the provision of food for some fish (Salmo trutta - trout): drift and content of the stomach are balanced here (Simuliidae): whereas others (Thymallus vulgaris) only selectively chose certain animals living at the bottom (molluscs). The total drift, drift of organisms and drift of organic material and minerals, plays a main role in the rate of production in streams. Besides the biology of the organisms living on the river bed, also the geological and hydrographical situation of the area plays a very important role for the composition of the drift. During the years 1964-1966 three streams in the characteristical geological formations flysch, gneiss and chalk of lower Austria were studied in regard to their drift. The Tulln (above St. Christopen), the Krems (above Senftenberg) and the Schwarza (above Hirschwang) seemed to be ideal for this comparative study because they are easy to reach. After summarising the hydrography and chemistry of examined rivers, the author examines the relationship between water level and total drift and the stratification of the total drift before analysing the drift of living organisms. Also considered are seasonal changes of drift of organisms and drift of exuviae.

The frequency upconversion properties of Er3+/Yb3+-codoped heavy metal oxide lead-germanium-bismuth oxide glasses under 975 mn excitation are investigated. Intense green and red emission bands centered at 536, 556 and 672 run, corresponding to the H-2(1/2) --> I-4(15/2), S-4(3/2) --> I-4(15/2) and F-4(9/2) -->I-4(15/2) transitions of Er3+, respectively, were simultaneously observed at room temperature. The influences of PbO on upconversion intensity for the green (536 and 556 nm) and red (672 nm) emissions were compared and discussed. The optimized rare earth doping ratio of Er3+ and Yb3+, is 1:5 for these glasses, which results in the stronger upconversion fluorescence intensities. The dependence of intensities of upconversion emission on excitation power and possible upconversion mechanisms were evaluated and analyzed. The structure of glass has been investigated by means of infrared (IR) spectral analysis. The results indicate that the Er3+/Yb3+-codoped heavy metal oxide lead-germanium-bismuth oxide glasses may be a potential materials for developing upconversion fiber optic devices. These minutes report on colloquium on the methodology of radiation measurement under water. The meeting was held on 3-5 January 1957, at the Biological Station, Lunz, Austria. The participants of the colloquium discussed various methodologies of radiation measurements, basic methods such as Secchi Disc and underwater photometer as well as specialist equipment like the absolute radiation apparatus.

Using track detectors we have measured sputtering yields induced by MeV light ions incident on a uranium containing glass, UO2 and UF4. No deviation from the behavior predicted by the Sigmund theory was detected in the glass or the UO2. The same was true for UF4 bombarded with 4He at 1 MeV and with 16O and 20Ne at 100 keV. In contrast to this, 4.75 MeV 19F(+2) sputters uranium from UF4 with a yield of 5.6 ± 1.0, which is about 3 orders of magnitude larger than expected from the Sigmund theory. The energy dependence of the yield indicates that it is generated by electronic rather than nuclear stopping processes. The yield depends on the charge state of the incident fluorine but not on the target temperature. We have also measured the energy spectrum of the uranium sputtered from the UF4. Ion explosions, thermal spikes, chemical rearrangement and induced desorption are considered as possible explanations for the anomalous yields.
